Not only do I get to do what I love every day, while surrounded by talented people, I also get to do it while raising my beautiful daughters by my side.” -Jess “I will admit it, I’m a bead hoarder.” - Jess

Over the last 12 years, my bead stash has grown into something I would have never dreamed of. I started out designing jewelry while living in Chicago. My roommate at the time left for work one day with me at the sewing machine and returned later that night to find me with tiny little seed beads and wire scattered about our mosaic tiled coffee table. Those itsy bitsy beads were all stuck in the cracks of the tile, sofa cushions and bouncing just about everywhere. Of course this was my first experience with beading, so I didn’t have the proper supplies, like a handy bead mat, bead stoppers, and for that matter, even the correct beading wire. Times sure have changed from staying up until 2am making jewelry just for fun. My first time at the Bead&Button Show in Milwaukee was all it took to know this is what I wanted to do for a living! After browsing and shopping aisle, after aisle with my mom, I couldn’t stop thinking about beads and new ways to use them. At that time I decided to make a move from fast-paced city living, to a quiet little tourist town and beads and jewelry designing became my career. For years I was a co-owner of a bead store on Main St. where I was able to work with my mom and be surrounded by beads daily. This is where I met Wendy and Jeanne, my kindred spirits. We were brought together through our passion for jewelry design in a place offering natural beauty, history, and inspiration – the small, eclectic and art-inspiring town of Galena, Illinois. Not that long after we met, through our combined efforts, Vintaj was born. Art beads are a main part of my inspiration. I love their handmade & organic quality. -Jess Nine years later, Vintaj – now reaching worldwide markets – is growing rapidly and employs several friends and family members. As a co-owner and the Education Director for Vintaj, I stay very busy. Our operations, offices and the Vintaj studio are now in a large facility where we film all my favorite mixed media jewelry tips and techniques. We also have a bricks and mortar shop, which is full of handcrafted jewelry and tons of inspiration. My designs are inspired by nature and the beauty of our changing seasons evoking a memory, thought or feeling. In this book, I guide you through this process sharing my personal design style and favorite techniques. Art beads are a main part of my inspiration. I love their handmade & organic quality. Creating & mixing art beads with a variety of metals & techniques is my favorite process in jewelry designing. The medium of the art bead determines the technique & tools I will incorporate into the piece. Birds, flowers, leaves, colors, texture, shapes and messages tell a story when brought together with the right combination of beads, metals & other materials. Some mediums, techniques & tools I love together are; polymer clay + filigree wrapping + fiber = rustic look, ceramic + clustering + linking = delicate look, acrylic flowers & glass + wire wrapping = organic feel, just to name a few. I absolutely love creating artistic focals & jewelry components as well; altering blanks & bezels, embossing, etching, stamping, letter imprinting, texturing, filigree & wire wrapping, patina effects, melt art, shaping & forming metal and more! With Vintaj jewelry tools & dies it makes it easy to achieve that vintage, rustic & worn mixed media jewelry look that I’m going for.

Jess’s Studio The Perfect Design Space All artists and jewelry designers can agree that your space is creative chaos that only you can understand. I tell my husband, yes, I know where everything is, and yes, I do need all of it, and yes, a lot needs to be out so I can see it. My studio is a lofted space in our home. It has been evolving over the years. Now that I have compartmentalized stations, and plenty of storage it makes for the perfect design and work space. Dedicated Space I have a corner dedicated for metal embossing. I have a worn metal tray full of altered blanks and my Vintaj BIGkick machine, DecoEmboss & DecoEtch Dies are always out. For much needed extra storage, by husband installed 6 feet of base cabinets with drawers to hold my tools, directly below my work bench where I stamp, hammer, rivet and texture metal. In my middle drawer I keep my Vintaj patinas, non-stick craft sheets, plenty of metal reliefing blocks, a Heat it Craft Tool and alcohol inks. I keep all my melt art supplies together, the Ranger melting pot, project craft sheet, UTEE, a variety of embossing powders, ultra-fine steel wool, and some supplies. 3

Jess’s Studio My daughter Livi already loves necklaces. She has her own space in my studio where she plays. We have done a lot of child proofing, to keep her curious hands at bay. We like to take breaks to see what mommy made. Storage This is a great storage solution! My husband screwed galvanized steel up on the wall. We glued heavy duty magnets to the bottoms of clear acrylic tins and jars to color coordinate and store “some” of my Czech glass and fire polished beads. The tiny glass jars on the wood shelving hold; metal beads, spacers, vintage pearls and found objects. I need more jars! And, wood boxes come in handy to store just about everything. 4

Art Beads Wood & Lucite Ceramic Metal My love for collecting, hoarding & designing with Art Beads The one thing you could say that started my career in jewelry is a love for beads, all beads! Big beads, small beads, matte beads, shiny beads, natural beads, metal beads, and especially handcrafted art beads; clay, ceramic, Polymer Clay porcelain, glass, enamel… I’m not ashamed to say that I am a bead hoarder. My design process is organic and starts with the beads then the entire piece grows around it. Sometimes a bead can sit in my stash for two, four, maybe even six years or more before I find just the right way to use it! The perfect complement to Vintaj metals The entire design team at Vintaj can attest to my passion for jewelry making. Vintaj embellishments have ornate details and rich colors that complement the most creative art beads. The time and energy to create art beads is matched in the process of creating Vintaj Natural Brass, Artisan Copper and Artisan Pewter. Like art beads, each and every Vintaj piece undergoes a meticulous, hand finishing process. We’re proud of the unique and artistic nature of the stages we apply and the time it takes to bring you naturally beautiful elements to pair with your beads of choice. Lampwork Glass 5

Jess’s Wire Techniques messy wrapped loop coiled loop 9

simple loop - round nose pliers coiled loop 1 2 1 2 Cut the straight end approximately 1/4 inch above the bead. Use the round nose pliers to grip the straight end of the eye pin, pulling it toward you to form a 45° angle. Continue by turning the eye pin away from you until you’ve completed one full loop. Stack pieces onto a 1 inch head pin. While holding the stacked pieces tightly together, use round nose plier to grip the straight end of head pin, pulling it toward you to form a 45° angle. Turn the head pin away from you with plier to start coiling the wire (keeping the angle). Continue turning the wire until you’ve completed 2 full revolutions of a coiled loop, achieving plenty of tension on the bead. simple loop - 1-step looper While holding 1 beads securely against the loop, string straight end of 1.5” eye pin through the side of 1-step looper; below the metal peg, above the cutter and through the hole in the back end of the tool. Push eye pin until the bead rests on stopper. 2 3 Squeeze handles firmly to cut the straight end of eye pin. Remove cut wire and gently bend the end of the bead back slightly to straighten loop. Release handles and remove bead link from metal peg. 10

jump ring wrapped briolette 1 1 2 3 When opening jump rings, use two pair of chain nose pliers, pulling towards & away from you. Use pliers to tightly close the jump ring, lining up the ends until you see a smooth & secure connection without a gap or opening. 1 2 String a 3 inch piece of 20 gauge natural brass wire a ¼ way through crystal briolette. Cross wire above bead, bending the long end of the wire back so that it is sticking straight up. wrapped loop 3 Grip the wire just above the crystal with chain nose plier while you completely wrap the shorter piece around base of longer wire, approximately 3 times. Use chain nose plier to straighten coils and tuck in end of wire. 4 String straight end of wire through acrylic flower and wisteria bead cap. While holding round nose plier tightly closed against wire, form the wire up over the pliers to start your loop. 11 Pull the wire around to form a simple loop with the tail overlapping. Grip the tail end of wire with chain nose plier. Begin to wrap the wire tightly below the loop to create your first coil. Wrap the tail down the neck of wire tightly until you complete approximately 3 full revolutions. End your last coil on the back side of the loop. Use flush cutter to trim the excess wire close to the bottom coil. Use chain nose plier to straighten your loop if necessary and to tuck in the end of wire tightly below the bottom coil.

1 2 messy wrapped loop 3 4 Form a wrapped loop on one end of a 6 inch piece of 20 gauge natural brass wire. String beads onto straight end of wire. Use round nose pliers to form a wrapped loop with straight end of wire. Loosely wrap the remaining wire back up towards the loop over the previous coils. Continue to loosely wrap the wire back down towards the bead cap to create a messy loop. Use chain nose plier to straighten your loop if necessary and to tuck in the end of the wire. 1 2 bail wrap 3 4 String a 1.5 inch eye pin through the top-drilled hole ¼ inch away from loop of eye pin. Use chain nose plier to gently bend both ends of the wire up above the hole. Grip the loop of eye pin with plier. Wrap the straight end of eye pin 3 times up the neck of the wire. End your last coil on the back side of the leaf and use flush cutter to trim the excess wire close to the top coil. Use chain nose plier to straighten your coils and loop if necessary, and to tuck in the end of wire tightly below the loop. 12

wire fastening 1 2 3 4 Use chain nose plier to weave 24 gauge wire through filigree and back through holes in cameo. Continue to work wire through pieces, gently pulling it for a tight wrap at least 2 times through front and the back. End wire on back side of filigree, twisting the ends to secure. Use flush cutter to trim the excess wire close to the twisted knot. 1 2 filigree wrap 3 Crimp down tail end of wire with chain nose pliers. To hide wire, cover back by wrapping with a larger filigree. 4 Stack beads & bead caps on a 2 inch head pin. String end through punched hole in filigree. Turn the wire until you’ve completed 3 full revolutions of a coiled loop, achieving plenty of tension on the filigree. 13 Line up petals of the second filigree between the wide section of the base filigree. Use chain nose plier to start bending over the 4 petals. Work from opposite sides to create a symmetrical wrap. Once filigree is symmetrical and all petals are folded towards the front side of pendant, crimp down filigree with chain nose plier. Continue to secure and crimp down filigree on all sides to complete your focal.
