About Vintaj Natural Brass Co. Vintaj Natural Brass Co. is a dream fulfilled of three women-sisters Wendy Mullane and Jeanne Holland, along with their close friend, Jess Italia Lincoln. Born with kindred spirits the three were brought together through their passion for jewelry design in a place offering natural beauty, history and inspiration-the small eclectic and art inspiring town of Galena IL. The spark ignited when Wendy and Jeanne were teaching jewelry design to a women’s group in their church in the spring of 2001. Playfully and artfully manipulating a filigree bead, Jeanne opened it and wrapped it around a glass stone. Wendy and Jeanne immediately realized the unlimited potential of what they now term “creative settings” and began to design together full time as Vintaj Design Studios. Not only did this venture give the opportunity for an income and creative outlet, but also it allowed time for the things they considered most important: raising their children and serving in the community. Wanting to share this opportunity with others like themselves, they began to explore the notion of offering their jewelry components to the beading industry. Impressed with Jess’s unique sense of design, creativity, talent and fervor, Wendy and Jeanne invited her to join them. Immediately applying her talents, Jess began implementing a campaign to reach beaders all over the world. (Sharing their unique products and innovative techniques by exhibiting in bead shows and being featured in books, magazines and key publications) Jess completed the circle, and through their combined efforts, Vintaj Natural Brass Co. was born. Vintaj natural brass, arte metal and artisan copper are not antique plated. They are nickel and lead-free compliant. Natural brass is solid brass consisting of 85% copper and 15% zinc. Arte metal is a ferrite (iron) based metal. Artisan copper is solid copper. Hand Embellished Each and every Vintaj embellishment undergoes a meticulous, hand embellishing process. Due to the careful, hand process used on each Vintaj piece, every embellishment has its own unique color and luster. Technique Patinas “Fluttering Wings” by: Jeanne Holland Vintaj Patinas bring old beauty to any piece. They are opaque inks specially formulated to adhere to metal and create beautiful and durable patina effects. Layer on thick for a bold color or apply in thin coats to allow the metal to shine through. 3.
1 2 3 Shake bottle well. Dispense a small amount of verdigris, jade, marine and cobalt patina onto a non-stick craft sheet. 4 Use a paint brush to apply a thin coat of verdigris patina to the surface of the dragonfly. 5 Use a paint brush to apply a thin coat of jade patina to the edges of the wings. Blot with a paper towel. 6 Materials List • 51x63mm Dragonfly Verdigris, Jade, Marine and Cobalt Vintaj Patinas • Paper Towel Necessary Tools • Non-Stick Craft Sheet Use a paint brush to apply a thin coat of marine patina to the center of the wings. Blot with a paper towel. 7 Use a paint brush to apply a thin coat of cobalt patina to the body of the dragonfly. 8 Blot with a paper towel. • Paint Brush • Reliefing Block • Heat tool 9 Helpful Tips Relief your project before the patina has completely cured. The longer it cures, the tougher the finish to relief. Use a paint brush to touch up the wings with verdigris patina. Blot with a paper towel. Use the dark gray side of a Reliefing Block to remove patina from the raised areas of the dragonfly. To add durability to the patina finish, heat the entire piece with a heat tool. Allow to completely cool before handling. 4.
Technique Image Transfer Altered Blanks “Memories of You” by: Jeanne Holland Photo transfers can range from personal photos for keepsake pieces to graphic scenes, words and dates. Just remember to reverse your image for words, letters and numbers when printing out. 5.
1 2 3 Trace the outline of a blank onto a black and white laser photo copy or high quality Epson Photo 1400 ink jet print. 4 Use a flat tip paint brush to apply an even layer of gold acrylic paint to the surface of the altered blank. 5 While paint is still wet, place the painted side of the blank inside the traced outline. Materials List • 50x32mm Victorian Silhouette Altered Blank 6 • Laser Photocopy (Reversed) • Gold Adirondack Metallics Paint Dabber • ICE Resin Necessary Tools Use a popsicle stick to smooth over the back of paper, removing any air bubbles. Allow paint to dry for a couple of hours. 7 Once completely dry, spray water from a Mini Mister over the paper backing. Be sure the entire surface is saturated. 8 Gently rub your finger over the wet paper. Start in the center of the blank, carefully removing it from the image. 9 • Pencil • Paint Brush • Popsicle Stick • Mini Mister • Non-Stick Craft Sheet • Metal Awl Helpful Tips Re-wet and repeat as necessary. Once the surface has dried it will slightly whiten again, leaving a cloudy finish. Mix equal parts of ICE Resin according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Place blank on a non-stick craft sheet. Use a popsicle stick to apply resin to the blank, covering the entire surface. Allow to cure overnight. While mostly cured, use a metal awl to remove excess resin from the blank hole. Image transfers can also be sealed using UTEE and Melting pot.*See steps 4&5 on pg. 28. 6.
Technique DecoEtch with the Sizzix BIGkick “Inscribed Keys” by: Rose Noble The Vintaj DecoEtch dies by Sizzix create a thin etched line in Vintaj natural brass, artisan copper and arte metal blanks. Varying lengths of etched blanks add dimension to this piece. 7.
Materials List • 52x17mm Feathered Wing Altered Blank 1 • Onyx Vintaj Patina • Paper Towel Necessary Tools • Botanical Flourish DecoEtch Die • Vintaj BIGkick Machine by Sizzix Once you have determined the design area, place the blank face down on the DecoEtch die. 2 3 4 • Paint Brush • Reliefing Block Helpful Tips Place the die between the clear plates on top of the solo shim and platform. Crank it through one time. Use a paint brush to apply onyx patina to the blank. Use a paper towel to remove the excess patina while it is still wet. To highlight the raised areas of the blank, use the white side of a Reliefing Block. Polish with the light gray side. Relief the reverse side of the etched blank for a double sided design. Create dozens of different designs from one die by placing the blank on different areas of the die. 8.
Technique Distressed Arte Metal “Treasured Sea” by: Jess Italia Lincoln Hammer to flatten and add character to pendants and charms. Create beautifully rustic, distressed jewelry components! 9.
Materials List 1 • 44.5x32.5mm Harvest Maiden • Renaissance Wax • Paper Towel Necessary Tools • Steel Bench Block • Rubber Dampening Block Place an arte metal hollow back pendant on a Steel Bench Block and Rubber Dampening Block. Use the flat end of Ball Pein Hammer to flatten the pendant. 2 3 4 • 8oz Ball Pein Hammer • Reliefing Block Helpful Tips Don’t be dainty. Hammer both sides several times with a good solid blow each time. Turn pendant over to the back side and continue to hammer and smooth out any curves or creases. To highlight the raised areas of the pendant, use the white side of a Reliefing Block. Polish with the light gray side. Use a paper towel to apply a small amount of Renaissance Wax to protect from oxidation. 10.
Technique DecoEmboss with the Sizzix BIGkick “Upon Wings” by: Jess Italia Lincoln The Vintaj DecoEmboss dies by Sizzix create a raised area in Vintaj natural brass, artisan copper and arte metal blanks. The beautiful contrast of the simply reliefed design stands out and adds dimension to any piece. 11.

Technique Alcohol Inks on Arte Metal “WaterLily Cuff” by: Jeanne Holland Alcohol inks add a semi translucent color with a luminous quality to the arte metal. The copper, rust and ginger inks blend well with the rich black of the arte metal and create a beautiful contrast against the reliefed silver areas. 13.
1 Use the 8.5mm barrel of Filigree Shaping Pliers to form a curved cuff from the Rectangle Blank Connector. 2 3 4 Materials List • 45x20mm Rectangle Blank Connector • 38mm Waterlily • Copper Adirondack Metallic Mixatives • Paper Towel • Ginger & Hazelnut Adirondack Alcohol Ink • Vintaj Glaze Necessary Tools Apply Copper Metallic Mixatives to various areas of an arte metal waterlily. 5 While mixative is still wet, use a paper towel to lightly dab mixative and create a mottled finish. 6 Apply a few drops of ginger and hazelnut alcohol inks to the other areas of the waterlily. 7 • Filigree Shaping Pliers • Reliefing Block • Paint Brush Helpful Tips When using multiple inks, group complementary colors that will blend well together. Use a paper towel to dab and blend the ink and quicken drying time. Use the dark gray side of Reliefing Block to remove ink from the raised areas. Buff and polish with the other sides. Use a paint brush to apply Vintaj Glaze to the entire surface and seal in the inks. 14.
Technique Layered Riveting “Bee Garden” by: Jeanne Holland 1/2” long nail head rivets are perfect for stacking multiple layers of charms for a delightful collage. 15.
1 2 3 Materials List • 20x18mm Queen Bee Connector • 29mm Arte Metal Blank Square (2) • 1/2” Nail Head Rivets (4) Use a Metal Awl to enlarge the holes of a bee connector in order to fit the diameter of the nail head rivets. 4 Lay the bee connector over two embossed arte metal blanks. Use a Sharpie to mark where you would like the holes. 5 Use 1.5mm Hole Punch Pliers to create holes over the marked areas. 6 • 20x14mm Embossed Keyhole • 18x14mm Woodland Leaf • 30mm Violet Sprig • 13x12mm Copper Teensie Nouveau Leaf • 18x3mm Copper Prairie Leaf • 29x14mm Floret • 7.5mm Pinwheel Washers (3) Necessary Tools Insert ½” nail head rivets through the back side of the blanks. Stack fastenables and charms onto the rivets. 7 Continue layering another fastenable, bee connector and washers on the rivets using the bee connector to join the two blanks. 8 While using a metal awl to hold the stacked pieces down tightly, trim the rivet to approximately 1/16”using Flush Cutters. 9 • Metal Awl • Extra Fine Point Sharpie Marker • 1.5mm Hole Punch Pliers • Steel Bench Block • Rubber Dampening Block • Flush Cutter • 4oz Ball Pein Hammer Helpful Tips While holding the stacked pieces down, use the round end of a Ball Pein Hammer to mushroom out the trimmed rivet. Strike the rivet with the flat side of the hammer until flat. Repeat with remaining rivets to secure all of your pieces. Use 1.5mm Hole Punch Pliers to add a hole to each corner of the top blank in order to add jump rings. Use a Steel Bench Block stacked on top of a Rubber Dampening Block for your riveting surface. 16.
Dapping a bezel creates a deeper cavity for holding polymer clay, resin or UTEE. Technique Dapped Bezel with Polymer Clay “Earth, Sea & Sky” by: Jeanne Holland 17.
1 2 3 Materials List Place a rosemal bezel over a medium size opening on a Wooden Dapping Block. 4 Place a Wood Punch over the center of the bezel and strike with the flat end of a Ball Pein Hammer to dap. 5 Kneed clay to soften. Press the clay into the cavity of the bezel. Form the clay along the edges. 6 • 42mm Rosemal Bezel • 28.5x9mm Copper Open Leaf • 2” Head Pin • Anglesite Parado Jewelry Clay • Jet & Citrus Adirondack Paint Dabbers • Paper Towel • Renaissance Wax • Liquid Fusion Glue Necessary Tools • Wooden Dapping Block & Punch Use a copper leaf to imprint patterns along the edges of the clay. 7 Lightly press 3mm Metal Letter Stamps into the clay to spell out your message. 8 Use a head pin to create additional texture. Bake clay pendant according to the manufacturer’s instructions. 9 • 8oz Ball Pein Hammer • 3mm Letter Set • Conventional Oven • Paint Brush Helpful Tips Use a paint brush to apply jet and citrus paint. Remove excess paint with a paper towel. Use a paper towel to apply a small amount of Renaissance Wax to seal in the paint. The clay will slightly shrink during baking. Tap bezel against table to pop out clay and use dab of clear glue to secure. You can also use hollow back pendants & charms to create beautiful clay collages. Try adding color with alcohol inks for a vibrant look! 18.
Technique Decorative Filigree “Summer’s Garden” by: Jeanne Holland Adding a layer of filigree gives weight and substance to any piece and added beauty of detail. 19.
1 2 3 Use 1.5mm Hole Punch Pliers to add a hole opposite the pre-drilled hole in an etched copper large circle blank. 4 Center the blank on the inside of the filigree. Use Chain Nose Pliers to turn in the petals of the filigree. 5 Continue to crimp the folded petals tightly against the blank until they are symmetrical and secure. 6 Materials List • 33.5mm Copper Large Circle Blank • 42mm Passion Flower Petal Filigree • 19x16mm Filigree Leaf Charm • 17x16.5mm Copper Watchful Bird • 7.25mm Jump Ring Necessary Tools Use a Metal Awl to enlarge the hole at the top of a filigree leaf charm to fit a 7.25mm jump ring. 7 Use the ring to attach a copper bird charm. Use the tip of Rosary Pliers to curve the wing on the bird charm. 8 Use Chain Nose Pliers to feed the curved bird wing through an opening near the bottom center of the filigree leaf charm. 9 • 1.5mm Hole Punch Pliers • Chain Nose Pliers • Metal Awl • Rosary Pliers Helpful Tips Continue by crimping down the wing from the front of the bird to secure. Use Chain Nose Pliers to wrap the opposite wing around the edge of the leaf. Continue by bending and crimping from the back side of the leaf to secure. Get creative and wrap filigree around stones, found objects and pendants. For a unique look form filigree in an asymmetrical fashion. 20.
Technique Hammered Artisan Copper “Ivy Forest” by: Jeanne Holland 21.
Applying Onyx patina to hammered artisan copper creates contrast and appeal. Multiple layers and types of hammering create a one of a kind piece with handmade quality. Materials List • 33.5mm Copper Large Circle Blank 1 2 • Onyx Vintaj Patina • Paper Towel Necessary Tools • Steel Bench Block • Rubber Dampening Block Use the round end of a 4oz Ball Pein Hammer to create texture and dimples on the surface of the blank. 3 4 Continue to add texture with the round end of the hammer. The harder you strike the larger and deeper the dimples. 5 • 4oz Ball Pein Hammer • Paint Brush • Reliefing Block Helpful Tips Use the rim of the hammer to create a few strikes and dashes over your textured blank. Use a paint brush to apply onyx patina to the blank. Use a paper towel to remove the excess patina while it is still wet. Use the dark gray side of a Reliefing Block to highlight the raised areas of the blank. Buff and polish with the other sides. Use a Steel Bench Block stacked on top of a Rubber Dampening Block for your hammering surface. Hammer against concrete, stones, etc. to create a variety of textures. 22.
Technique Melt Art Open Back Bezel “Memoir” by: Jeanne Holland While clear UTEE is not as hard or durable as jewelry grade resins, you can create a finished piece in the matter of minutes without waiting overnight for curing. 23.
1 2 Trace the diameter of a framed scrollwork pendant on old newsprint. Use scissors to cut slightly inside the circle. 3 4 Turn the Melting Pot to UTEE setting. Pour a teaspoon amount of UTEE onto the craft sheet. Allow to melt. Materials List • 35mm Framed Scrollwork 5 • Old Newsprint • Clear UTEE (Ultra Thick Embossing Enamel) Necessary Tools Use Chain Nose Pliers to place the newsprint circle over melted UTEE. Allow UTEE to soak through the paper. 6 Use Chain Nose Pliers to place the framed scrollwork over the newsprint paper and melted UTEE. 7 Pour 1 teaspoon of UTEE in the center of the framed scrollwork to coat the top of the pendant. 8 • Pencil • Scissors • Melting Pot • Non-stick Craft Sheet • Teaspoon • Chain Nose Pliers • Metal Awl Helpful Tips Allow the UTEE to melt completely. Use Chain Nose Pliers and Metal Awl to carefully slide the pendant off of the craft sheet onto the Melting Pot surface. Turn off the Melting Pot and allow to completely cool. Use the Metal Awl to remove any excess UTEE from the loop. Once cooled you can remove any excess UTEE that is left on the edges with scissors and smooth the edges by sanding with the dark gray side of a Reliefing Block. 24.
Technique Hammered Arte Metal Findings “Trumpet Vine” by: Jess Italia Lincoln Simple hammering creates a flattened decorative look on the ends of head pins and turns basic jump rings into functional distressed jewelry components & focals. 25.
1 2 Use the flat end of a Ball Pein Hammer to flatten a 15mm arte metal jump ring. 3 4 Use two pair of Chain Nose Pliers to straighten out and re-close the jump ring. 5 Materials List • 15mm Arte Metal Jump Ring • 1.5 inch Arte Metal Head Pins (3) • 12.5mm Copper Acorn Bead Cap • Lucite Flower Necessary Tools • Steel Bench Block • Rubber Dampening Block Use the round end of Ball Pein Hammer to flatten ¼ inch of the end of an arte metal head pin. 6 String three flattened head pins through a copper acorn bead cap and lucite flower. 7 Use Chain Nose Pliers to bend each flattened end away from each other creating a fanned look. 8 • 4oz Ball Pein Hammer • Chain Nose Pliers (2) • Rosary Pliers Helpful Tips Use a Steel Bench Block stacked on top of a Rubber Dampening Block for your hammering surface. Use the Rosary Pliers side cutter to trim the straight end of the center head pin to approximately a ¼ inch above the bead. While holding pieces tightly together, use the Rosary Pliers to form a simple loop on the center wire. Continue to use Rosary Pliers to create curls with the remaining two wires on each side of loop. 26.
Technique Melt Art Decorivets “Summerfly Cuff” by: Jess Italia Lincoln Decorivets have multiple prongs or points on each end of the piece and can be easily attached to a variety of materials. Whether they are fastened through leather or bent around filigree, the result is stunning. 27.
1 2 3 Materials List • 40x30mm Marcasite Butterfly Decorivet Use Chain Nose Pliers to gently bend the prongs of the butterfly decorivet flat. 4 Apply pearl paint dabbers then, lettuce and raisin alcohol ink to create an opaque iridescent base. 5 Once dry to the touch, remove the ink from the raised areas using the dark gray side of a Reliefing Block. 6 • 40x23mm Copper Rectangular Bracelet Blank • Pearl Adirondack Paint Dabber • Raisin & Lettuce Adirondack Alcohol Ink • Clear UTEE (Ultra Thick Embossing Enamel) • Suede cuff Necessary Tools Set Melting Pot to UTEE. Place the decorivet on a piece of non-stick craft sheet. Cover with 1 tsp of UTEE. Allow to melt. 7 Use Chain Nose Pliers to carefully lift butterfly out of the Melting Pot. Set aside on a piece of non-stick craft sheet. 8 Allow to cool completely. To create a matte finish, lightly buff the surface with Ultra Fine Steel Wool, using a circular motion. 9 • Chain Nose Pliers • Reliefing Block • Melting Pot • Non-stick Craft Sheet • Teaspoon • Ultra Fine Steel Wool • Rosary Pliers Helpful Tips Use Rosary Pliers to gently bend the prongs on the decorivet back to their original position. Layer the butterfly over a copper bracelet blank and punch the rivet points through the suede cuff. Use Chain Nose Pliers to bend the prongs inward on the back side of the material to secure your decorivet. Be careful with the Decorivet prongs, bending them back and forth too many times can cause them to break off. 28.
Technique Journal Pendant “Find Your Dream” by: Betsy Kaage Each journal page incorporates a new technique to tell the story. Rivet, letter imprint and stitch to pages to add dimension. 29.
1 2 3 Materials List Use a 3mm Letter Set and flat end of the 8oz Ball Pein Hammer to imprint your word. Apply onyx patina to color the letters. 4 Measure ¼ inch above the pre-drilled hole and mark with a Sharpie. Mark four holes per side of blank ¼ inch apart. 5 Use 1.5mm Hole Punch Pliers to create holes over your markings. You will end up with a total of eight holes. 6 • 23.5mm Copper Small Square Blank • 29mm Journal Page (4) • 24 gauge Copper Wire • Onyx Vintaj Patina • Paper Towel Necessary Tools • Steel Bench Block • Rubber Dampening Block • 3mm Letter Set • 8oz Ball Pein Hammer Use the Sharpie to mark holes on an embossed journal page through the holes on the copper square. Punch holes. 7 Bend 6 inches of wire in half and string through two holes on the back right side of blanks. Lace wire through holes. 8 Pull wire tight with each weave. Continue to string the wire creating a criss cross pattern. 9 Helpful Tips Continue to create a criss cross pattern. Your wire ends should end up on the back side. Twist ends together. Use Flush Cutters to trim the twisted wire section to approximately ¼ inch. Use Chain Nose Pliers to flatten the wire down tightly against the back of the blank and tuck in the ends of the wire.. Technique Altered Blank Canvas Bezel “Daisy Chain” by: Jess Italia Lincoln An Altered Blank Canvas can be rendered into a beautiful handmade bezel. Collage with text and riveted layers of charms and embellishments for a fun dimensional design. 31.
1 2 3 Measure a 1 ½” square starting at a corner of the canvas. Draw a smaller square ¼” inside the edges of the 1 ½” square. 4 Use Metal Shears to cut out the 1 ½” square. Cut four ¼” slits opposite each other at the corners to create tabs. 5 Along the edge of a Steel Block, use the flat end of the 8oz Ball Pein Hammer to bend the canvas on the line, creating a ¼ inch fold. 6 Materials List • 3”x3” Altered Blank Canvas Necessary Tools • Pencil • Ruler • Metal Shears • Steel Bench Block • Rubber Dampening Block • 8oz Ball Pein Hammer Repeat step 3 for other side. Use Chain Nose Pliers to bend and fold in the tabs at the ¼” lines Fold in all four tabs evenly. 7 Use Chain Nose Pliers to fold in the middle section of the remaining flat tabs. Pull tab tightly and crimp down with pliers. 8 On top of a steel block, use the flat end of the 8oz Ball Pein Hammer to completely flatten the edges of the bezel. 9 • Chain Nose Pliers • Metal File • Reliefing Block Helpful Tips Use Metal Shears to trim off any overlapping metal along the edges where the folds didn’t meet up. Use a Metal File in the same direction to smooth any rough edges from using the Metal Shears. Use the dark gray side of a Reliefing Block to finish smoothing out the edges of the bezel. Embed a fastenable in Resin or UTEE to create the hanger for your Bezel. Tape corners before filling to keep resin or Clear UTEE from seeping out. 32.
