When we talk too much and listen too little, we communicate to others that we think our ideas are much more important than theirs. Put a mental stopwatch on your conversation and keep track of how much you talk and how much you listen. When people talk with you do they feel their viewpoints and ideas have value? This week I listened to a woman who told me she loved the Tiger Swallowtail butterfly, another woman who was happy she completed a special project this week, then a man who told me a little bit of his story and how he was determined to better himself and he did. Today be someone who focuses completely on what another person is saying and while engaging with their ideas in a thoughtful, comprehensive way. .-Alex Fuertes, Maintenance Supervisor

LACDD NEWS By Christine Wells, LA (LW) CDD Community Director DE DI C AT I O N At the August Board of Supervisors meeting Supervisors voted unanimously to dedicate the Fitness Center to longtime resident and community advocate, Jack Davenport. A plaque will soon be installed inside the Fitness Center for all to remember one of Jack's favorite places at Lake Ashton. Whenever you use the recumbent stepper think of Jack. That was HIS machine as many fitness goers refer to it. We miss his smiling face in the Fitness Center already! Believe it or not, the first day of Fall is September 22. Even though Lake Ashton residents will not experience the traditional cooler temperatures and leaves changing colors, this does mark a time when friends traveling and visiting family and friends in other parts of the country return home. Welcome your friends and neighbors back to the community by coming out to a Sunday Funday event at Charm City with drink specials, going to an event at the Clubhouse or HFC, or maybe play a round of golf and enjoy a lunch at the Eagle's Nest afterwards. Whatever you choose to do, Lake Ashton is full of opportunities for socializing with friends and neighbors to nurture current relationships and create new friendships. Residents are enjoying the Summer Locals Concert Series and are already asking what we are going to do next year. Well...next year will feature some tribute bands and some other surprises! Staff is gearing up for Entertainment Series renewals that will start on October 1. Please be patient with staff as we work to accomplish this task while issuing credentials. It will definitely be a balancing act. Don't forget to purchase your NYE tickets for the party at the Clubhouse featuring 99 in the Shade. Dance the year away while making memories at the photo booths (which are always a hit) and eating some great finger foods. The party starts at 8 pm and Charm City will be doing dinner before the party so don't miss out. At the August 19 Board of Supervisors meeting Supervisors met and approved to move forward with a few projects. A quote was approved to make repairs to the pipe and pavement near 4081 Dunmore Drive, in addition to two other pavement repairs in this area. Residents will be informed via email blast of when this work will take place. Additionally Supervisors approved a quote to install seamless gutters at the Clubhouse and approved staff to work with the painting vendor chosen at the July meeting to paint the Clubhouse an alternative color. These two projects will be coordinated so the old gutters are removed prior to painting and the new gutters are installed after the Clubhouse is painted. A wrap up report was sent via email blast on August 23 with a summary of actions taken at this meeting. Any resident that did not receive this wrap up report can request a copy by sending an email to cwells@lakeashtoncdd.com. The next Board of Supervisors meeting is Monday, September 23 at 9 am in the Clubhouse Ballroom. Please visit lakeashtoncdd.com for agenda packets, meeting minutes and other District documents, or to sign up for blast emails. Floridians, however, can easily be affected by what is referred to as a “season within the season,” or peak hurricane season which normally occurs around the middle of September. There is also another Florida’s sales tax holiday for hurricane supplies, until September 6. The Dukes, a popular band from the Orlando area, will be shaking it up with 50s and 60s music on September 13 at the HFC. Not into dancing, well how about a new fitness routine? Be sure to plan on being at the Meet and Greet for Clinton, a personal trainer and certified exercise guru, who is affiliated with Just Move, a new and innovative health club in Winter Haven. Save the date: September 27 at 6:00 pm at the HFC. The overall renovation project of the HFC’s indoor pool could not have been accomplished without the assistance of Lake Ashton volunteers Richard Cronin, Charles Mutz and Shelba Powell, as well as Richard Palone, a maintenance employee at the HFC. Thank you to Carolyn Bishop, Peter Corriveau, Tom Roche and Jeri Trakes for reinstalling the volleyball net and to Sandy White for putting up the flags. We would also like to acknowledge Lynn Davis and Kathi Eustice for maintaining the live plants seen in the pool area. Kathi also took care of the plants during the pool renovation and oversees their overall care. We sincerely appreciate the time and effort of each person involved. A special thanks also to Lake Ashton residents for your patience during the pools closure. The RFID registration program begins this month with a start date of September 10, continuing through the remainder of the year or until all LA residents have their automobile RFID decals. Residents are encouraged to watch for emails listing their street addresses which identifies a specific day they are to report to either the Clubhouse or HFC to receive their automobile(s) RFID decal. Make-up days will also be scheduled to accommodate LA residents that have appointments or are out of state and unable to register on their original scheduled date. The CDDII monthly meeting will move from Friday to Thursday, beginning in the month of September. Please note residents are given two opportunities to speak during the CDD meeting, at the beginning, or should you wish to discuss something not on the agenda please fill out a “Request to Speak” form enabling you to speak at the end of the meeting. The next CDDII HOA meeting will take place on September 25, and residents may wish to note ARC requests are to be made online at arctracker.com/lakeashton2.

LACDD staff works closely with our aquatics contractor to ensure all treatments are being completed. During the summer months algae are fueled from the warm waters, sunny days, and large amounts of rain. Rain allows for “runoff” to seep into the ponds which provide food for unwanted plants, like algae. The aquatics technician is allowed to treat the ponds with approved chemicals and the frequency is determined by Southwest Florida Water Management District. This frequency is every 2 weeks. My pond is full will there be flooding if we have a hurricane? Each pond Lake Ashton CDD owns is designed to prevent flooding. Residents may notice a concrete structure in their pond. This man-made concrete structure is called an outfall structure. This is the discharge point for stormwater that prevents flooding and overflowing. Central Native Plants of Florida By Lynn Davis The Jamaica Caper also known by Quadrella Cynophallophora is an excellent privacy hedge. It is found along coastal areas in Florida, but can also be planted in a container in our region. It has light green glossy oval-shaped leaves. The flowers can be either white or pink. It’s a long lasting perennial. The bush needs little maintenance. It grows in full sun, but tolerates partial sun. It is hurricane wind resistance and survives in sandy soil. However, pruning is necessary since it can grow as tall as 18ft. The Jamaica Caper is also a host plant for the white butterfly larvae. It’s flowers open in the evening emitting a lovely fragrance. You can find this plant at Native Nurseries in Florida or grow from seed. Are algae blooms harmful? Algae are a natural component of the aquatic food chain and are not typically harmful to people. When will my pond begin to look better? The Fall and Winter months help substantially in reducing algae blooms. Cooler weather and less rain make pond conditions less desirable for algae to thrive. Email Matt Fisher at mfisher @lakeashtoncdd.com with any questions or concerns. REMINDER TO A LL RESID ENTS: Under no circumstance should residents conduct work of any kind on CDD property. This includes ponds, common areas, or conservation/wetland areas. If there are any concerns regarding pond erosion or other areas in need of maintenance, please contact LA (LW) CDD Community Director Christine Wells (cwells@lakeashtoncdd.com) or LA (WH) CDD Community Director Karen Van Kirk (kvankirk@lakeashton2cdd.com).

SAFETY NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH By Fay Wood, NW Chief What To Watch For When Suspecting a Crime (Courtesy of Law Enforcement) In the blink of an eye and sometimes what a witness or victim sees and remembers can be crucial in helping law enforcement solve the crime. When you call 9-1-1, you will be asked various questions. If you saw someone commit a crime, do you think you could accurately describe what they looked like or the vehicle they were driving? Important Description Information: Gender, ethnicity, approximate age, height, weight, build, Hair style and color, eye color, facial hair, jewelry, tattoos, glasses or anything else that would assist in identifying the person. Type and colors of clothing - any hat, shirt, jacket, pants, shorts, dress, belt, and shoes? Describing a Vehicle: License Plate, bumper stickers or damage, colors, year (or year range), or people in vehicle. Jotting this information down ASAP (in your phone or on paper) will help refresh your memory as needed to assist law enforcement and others trying to help in situations. CITIZENS ASSISTED PATROL By Mike Weissberg School is back in session. When schools started August 12, Lake Ashton CAP manned signs to slow down traffic in school zones. In the morning traffic starts at 7 am and goes to 8:30 am, and in the afternoon runs 2 to 3 pm. Pictured left to right: Pierre Duquette, Doug Gieger. Joe Formby. Mary Morosky, Kat Stone. Please encourage vendors doing work at your home to follow the practices below to ensure the roads of Lake Ashton are as safe as possible. WHAT IS IT GOING TO TAKE TO SLOW DOWN? By Ken Rickey We would like to thank all our friends and neighbors for the cards, texts, emails, visits, and phone calls. We treasure those responses. Our precious little dog was killed Sunday morning, July 14, by a driver going too fast in Lake Ashton. The driver came around a curve on Ashton Club Drive and ran over Mila. She stopped and said she was sorry. She said she did not see us. I was walking in the gutter; Mila was walking a little in front of me. As I started to pull her out of the way the car was still turning toward the edge of the road where I was standing. Mila got caught under the wheel of the car. I had to dive onto the lawn to keep from getting hit. This all took about two seconds. I thought at first Mila was OK, but her yelps of pain told me she was not. As I am writing this two weeks later, the deep ache in our hearts remains. Yes, she "was just a dog," but we loved her dearly and she returned that love unconditionally. Pedestrians are supposed to have the right-of-way on the road. It really does not matter even if the pedestrian is in the middle of the road. There is no reason to go so fast as to cause an accident. If you hit someone because you did not see them, what does that tell you? What if Mila had been our grandchild? (What if she had been yours?) Most of us are retired; what is the hurry? We will always remember Mila; she will always have a special place in our hearts. She was a gift to us from God. What is it going to take to slow down? All vehicles, including golf carts, must obey all stop signs and the 20 mph speed limit throughout LA. A person operating a golf cart on public roads or streets who is under 18 years must possess a valid learner’s permit or driver’s license. Based on a stranger than fiction true story, WICKED LITTLE LETTERS fol lows two neighbors: deeply conservative local Edith Swan (Olivia Colman) and rowdy Irish migrant Rose Gooding (Jessie Buckley). When Edith and fellow residents begin to receive wicked letters full of unintentionally hilarious profanities, foul-mouthed Rose is charged with the crime. The anonymous letters prompt a national uproar, and a trial ensues. However, as the town's women -- led by Police Officer Gladys Moss (Anjana Vasan) -- begin to investigate the crime themselves, they suspect that something is amiss, and Rose may not be the culprit after all. SEPTEMBER 24 - 26 (NO 11 AM MOVIE SEPTEMBER 26) 11 AM, 3 PM, 7 PM HIS THREE DAUGHTERS 2024 | R | 1H 41MIN (Language | Drug Use) From writerdirector Azazel Jacobs comes this bittersweet and often funny story of an elderly patriarch and the three grown daughters who come to be with him in his final days. Katie (Carrie Coon) is a controlling Brooklyn mother dealing with a wayward teenage daughter; free-spirited Christina (Elizabeth Olsen) is a different kind of mom, separated from her offspring for the first time; and Rachel (Natasha Lyonne) is a sportsbetting stoner who has never left her father's apartment -- much to the chagrin of her halfsisters, who share a different mother and worldview. Continuing his astute exploration of family dynamics in close-knit spaces, Jacobs follows the siblings over the course of three volatile days, as death looms, grievances erupt, and love seeps through the cracks of a fractured home. 22

LA ROCKERS By Annie Lutz As the summer begins to wind down, we are looking forward to our snowbird members returning over the next few months. The group has been busy creating rocks at our summer free paint sessions, and we’re so happy to see your posts showing your finds. Our mission is to spread kindness and bring a smile to our community. One message at just the right moment can change someone’s entire day, outlook, and life. LA Rockers meet in the HFC Community Room from 1 to 3 pm on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month. The 1st Wednesday meeting is for current members to learn new skills and techniques. We will be resuming our normal schedule in September, so there will be a new lesson on September 4 for current members. The 3rd Wednesday is a “Free Paint and Newcomers Session”. Newcomers are welcome to come and give the group a try! Newcomers will be lent the supplies they need for their first session so you must contact MJ Richards (mjmrichards517@gmail.com) at least five days before your first meeting so that supplies can be provided. If you are lucky enough to find a rock, please post a photo of your rock on Talk of Lake Ashton’s (TOLA) Facebook page. It means a lot for us to see where our rocks go.

We fought the rain and people on vacation but it was a great experience. It ended with a rain-shortened shootout on July 29, followed by sandwiches and drinks at the HFC. Congratulations to Kevin Boral and Christy Negrin being crowned the winner of the league. We are looking into doing more of these kinds of events in the next few months so keep a lookout. On another note, our fundraising committee of Mark McDuff and Larry Fabian has been very busy. We had a dance and raffle in July and sold over 80 t-shirts. We are hoping to get some estimates soon for the cost to add two more pickleball courts. The cost to join the association is only $12 a year. If you would like to join, contact Lisa Savala at lisasavala513@gmail.com. LA Swim Club is back in the swim of things after a big break while the indoor pool had a facelift. Some swimmers took the opportunity to build strength in their swim muscles at the fitness centers, while others found other pools in which to practice. LA Swimmers are getting back in shape, and some, who were motivated by watching the Olympics, are aiming to participate as a team in some Senior Games Swim Meets. The meets are divided by gender and age groups, and medals are awarded for the first three places in each event. There is even a state championship and a national Championship. Our club has had swimmers at both. Our club has pool workouts three times a week at the indoor pool at the HFC, and coaching available twice a week. If you can swim two lengths of the pool and are interested in fitness, come try us out on Mondays at 1 pm, Wednesdays at 1 pm, and Saturdays at 10 am. GOLF LAMGA By David Kubissa This month’s installment features an instructional tip from Ian Peterson, Lake Ashton’s head golf professional. Even if you’re not slicing, this is a good reinforcement of proper setup and grip techniques to control your ball striking. Coming this month: The twoday President’s Cup-themed event will be on Sept. 11 and 12, with breakfast on Day 1 and lunch on Day 2. Signup sheets will be going up on the LAMGA bulletin board. Look for the top finishers in the October article along with results from the August Olympics-style competition that had to be delayed to later that month and past the deadline for this month’s edition. IAN’S TIP: Curing a slice Slicing the golf ball is normally caused by an open clubface at impact combined with an out-to-in swing path. Factors like improper grip, stance and alignment, and swing mechanics contribute to the slice. Here are some ways stop slicing: Grip: Ensure a neutral to strong grip. For right-handed golfers, this means seeing two to three knuckles on your left hand when you grip the club. The Vs formed by your thumbs and forefingers on both hands should point toward your right shoulder (see photo). Stance and alignment: Align your feet, hips, and shoulders parallel to your target line to influence a proper swing path through the ball. Proper swing path: Focus on creating a slightly inside out swing path. Imagine a clock face where the golf ball is sitting at 6 o’clock. Swing through the ball toward 1 o’clock to promote an in-to-out path (see in-to-out path in photo). Clubface control: Create a square clubface at impact. Do this by rotating your right hand and forearm over your left hand and forearm as the club swings through impact. This would be the natural swinging motion of your arms. For more help, come see us in the golf shop to schedule a lesson. Red Hoagland Challenge standings: Through July, the Red Hoagland Hyundai Challenge leaderboard shows: 1. Doug Hines, $143; 2. Alan Gasner, $128.20; 3. Mike Krigelski, $119.35; 4) Rick Simonetta, $117.50. Sponsor salute: LAMGA thanks the following businesses and individuals whose support is vital to the league’s programs. Turner Furniture & Mattress; Cypress Liquor & Wine; Dennis Brock Window Cleaning; Crossed Industries; and Ann & Todd McCarthy. LA NINERS By Sandy Hockenberry LALGA By Beverly Hines A brief survey was sent to members in July with a deadline of August 19 to return completed forms. Highlights of the survey results should be available to share in the October LA Times. As seniors, we are at a greater risk of dehydration than other age groups. Dehydration on the golf course can happen quickly, especially in the hot humid weather. Excessive sweating can accelerate dehydration, so don’t wait until the end of your round to replace fluids. Instead, drink a little water or water enhanced with electrolytes throughout your round to help avoid dehydration. Most experts agree that water, electrolytes and carbohydrates in the correct combination are essential for hydration. A recent Golf Digest article suggests “consume 4 to 8 ounces of fluid with electrolytes every 15 – 20 minutes”. Being adequately hydrated could help you golf game too, muscles function much better when you are fully hydrated. September games will include: September 3: Convert One Hole to Par (individual game) September 10: Pink Ball Shamble Two Best Nets (team game) September 17: Individual Low Gross/Low Net (individual game) September 24: Modified Alternate Shot game) Applications for the 2024 – 2025 season are available at the Pro Shop. $30.00 dues and registration application are due by October 1st. September is a 30-day-long goodbye to summer, to the season that is leaving everybody both happy and weary of the warm and humid weather.
