WHAT IS IT GOING TO TAKE TO SLOW DOWN? By Ken Rickey We would like to thank all our friends and neighbors for the cards, texts, emails, visits, and phone calls. We treasure those responses. Our precious little dog was killed Sunday morning, July 14, by a driver going too fast in Lake Ashton. The driver came around a curve on Ashton Club Drive and ran over Mila. She stopped and said she was sorry. She said she did not see us. I was walking in the gutter; Mila was walking a little in front of me. As I started to pull her out of the way the car was still turning toward the edge of the road where I was standing. Mila got caught under the wheel of the car. I had to dive onto the lawn to keep from getting hit. This all took about two seconds. I thought at first Mila was OK, but her yelps of pain told me she was not. As I am writing this two weeks later, the deep ache in our hearts remains. Yes, she "was just a dog," but we loved her dearly and she returned that love unconditionally. Pedestrians are supposed to have the right-of-way on the road. It really does not matter even if the pedestrian is in the middle of the road. There is no reason to go so fast as to cause an accident. If you hit someone because you did not see them, what does that tell you? What if Mila had been our grandchild? (What if she had been yours?) Most of us are retired; what is the hurry? We will always remember Mila; she will always have a special place in our hearts. She was a gift to us from God. What is it going to take to slow down? All vehicles, including golf carts, must obey all stop signs and the 20 mph speed limit throughout LA. A person operating a golf cart on public roads or streets who is under 18 years must possess a valid learner’s permit or driver’s license.
