LACDD NEWS By Christine Wells, LA (LW) CDD Community Director (cwells@lakeashtoncdd.com) Busy season at Lake Ashton has officially begun. Seasonal residents are getting settled into their winter homes and calendars are filling up quickly with all the entertainment and activities available during this time of year. In this edition of the LA Times residents will find activities including shows featuring world-renowned entertainers, golf and sporting events, and a multitude of dinners and club events. There is truly something for everyone. January was a great month with a magic show, the Texas Tenors, and celebrating the King's 90th birthday. Feedback surveys have gone out for all of these activities. Please complete the surveys in your email whether you went to the activity or not. If you did not go please let us know why. The Lake Ashton Activities Advisory Group meets on a monthly basis to review the results of these feedback surveys. This information is used to determine future activity planning. On January 21, Lake Ashton Community Development District (LACDD) Supervisors met to attend to Board matters. Supervisors approved a color coating project for the Clubhouse Tennis Courts. The project will include patching of cracks, painting, and lining the Tennis Courts. This maintenance process helps extend the life of the courts. The Board also heard from the District Engineer and District Attorney as well as staff. A wrap up report with more details of the meeting was sent out in an email blast. If you did not receive this, please contact Christine Wells. Residents should also go to lakeashtoncdd.com to view agenda packets, minutes from meetings and more information. During this busy time of year staff is working hard to ensure the level of customer service residents are accustomed to is not affected by the increase in workload. Please be patient if you encounter lines at the Activities Office or Clubhouse Office. Staff works hard to give each resident a personalized experience and sometimes that takes a little time. Residents can visit the Clubhouse or HFC to receive clerical services, including faxing, scanning, copying, and notary services. Residents can also register their guests at both locations during posted office hours. Staff and volunteers appreciate all the words of encouragement and smiling faces during the distribution of RFID tags and Amenity Access Cards. It truly took a village and what a mighty village we have here! Even with four pickleball courts now available there are often residents waiting to get their turn at this ever-growing and popular sport. Other activities included our Friday night dance with J & the Two Tones, and the annual Health & Fitness Expo that is always a big hit. A big thank you to the vendors and residents who attended, as well as the HFC staff and volunteers who added to its overall success. The holidays are over, and quite a few of our residents are already getting a ‘jump’ on their future by starting out the year with better health and fitness habits. Keep it fun and exciting by varying your routine. While we are speaking of better health, the medical community reminds us that flu season is here, and to minimize germs from spreading, there are a few simple things we can all do, like washing our hands regularly and avoid touching your face; especially your eyes and nose. Getting plenty of rest, eating healthier foods, and exercising two to three times a week can be helpful as well. There are also several hand sanitizing stations located throughout the building for your use. For additional information and a more comprehensive list of help aids during this flu season you may also wish to visit https://www.cdc.gov/flu/prevention/actions-prevent-flu.html. A special note: When using the fitness center please use the disinfectant spray before and after utilizing the exercise equipment. February 7th might be a little early for Valentine’s Day, but Blind Ambition, an acoustic classic rock band, is sure to provide lively entertainment at the HFC. Stop by the activities desk to reserve your table. Residents can also pay at the door for this BYOB event. Want to know more about the activities at the Health & Fitness Center, why not stop by and check out the wall kiosk near the activities desk? Flyers provide information on individual activities, sponsored by the HFC or your fellow residents. There is also a box for Pickleball events and membership dues, and plenty of sign-up sheets for a variety of activities. You can also find the current calendar of events in the glass front case adjacent to the kiosk along with other information that may be of interest to you, and don’t forget to watch for ongoing emails. Other conveniences include a box for Winter Haven’s HOA, and a mail pickup box to the left of the front entrance door, with mail being picked up Monday through Saturday normally between 10:30 am and 12:30 pm. I look forward to 2025 and invite you to stop by to say hello, or if you have a question or concern, please let me know.

Being a good neighbor is an important aspect of the Lake Ashton lifestyle. Please keep the following policy reminders in mind. Contact Christine Wells, LACDD Community Director, or Karen Van Kirk, LAIICDD Community Director, with any questions. DOGS AT THE AMENITIES Per the Joint Amenity Facilities Policy, dogs and all other pets (with the exception of service dogs) are not permitted at the Amenity Facilities. This includes the Restaurant Patio and other outdoor amenities. If you are planning on coming to the Amenities for any reason please keep this policy in mind. If a service dog is in the Amenities without a vest on, Security or Staff will assume it is a pet and will inform you of this policy. Please be patient as they are simply following protocol. The Joint Amenity Facilities Policy also states that patrons are responsible for picking up after all pets and disposing of any waste in a designated pet waste receptacle or an outdoor dumpster as a courtesy to residents. Please keep this in mind when walking your dog around the Clubhouse and HFC amenities. Doggy bags and a throw-away station are located on the pathway on the West side of the Clubhouse Tennis Courts and at all Pet Play Parks. ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES AT THE CLUBHOUSE Charm City at Lake Ashton holds the liquor license to serve and sell alcoholic beverages at the Clubhouse, which means no outside alcoholic beverages can be brought into the Clubhouse and surrounding outdoor amenities. If restaurant staff, Clubhouse staff, or Security Officers notice any outside alcoholic beverages being brought in, they will ask the offenders to take it out of the building. Further violations of this policy will result in being asked to leave the facility or event, up to and including suspension of amenity facilities privileges. This is very important as this is deemed a violation of the liquor license that is in place and could potentially jeopardize the current license at the Clubhouse. LOST AND FOUND If you have lost anything at the Clubhouse or surrounding area, stop by the Clubhouse Office during posted office hours to check Clubhouse Lost and Found to see if it has been turned in. Lost and Found items will frequently be displayed at Monday Coffee and may be donated to local charities if not claimed. RESIDENT PHOTOS AND ARTWORK ON DI SPLAY AT THE CLUBHOUSE Be sure to stop by the Clubhouse Hallway near the Card Room to view the artwork on display for the month. In the month of January the photography winners of the 2024 Fine Arts and Photography Show were on display. In February be sure to stop by and see the winners of the Fine Arts portion of the show. See page 30 for more information on the 2025 show. SEASONAL QUI LTS ON DISPLAY AT THE CLUBHOUSE Lake Ashton is full of many talented Residents and we try to put that talent on display whenever possible. In the Clubhouse main hallway near the Card Room the Creative Quilters display a handmade quilt made by putting together squares made by the individual members of the group. This quilt is changed out seasonally and is displayed on a quilt rack made by the Lake Ashton Woodworkers Group. Stop by and admire the quilt that is on display. Please do not touch the quilt.

HOMELESS GRADUAT ING SENIORS By Doris Reisinger Please note Dr. Julio Caba will be speaking at Monday Coffee on March 3. This is a presentation not to be missed as he was once homeless himself, and talks about what motivated him to rise above it. He has contact with these students and tries to coach them to a greater life. The program is still in need of gift cards in small amounts 5, 10 or 15 dollars from fast food restaurants, Walmart, etc. Other items include personal hygiene items, new twin sheet sets, pocket size first aid kit, pocket size sewing kit, small pocket flashlights and most importantly, financial donations. These can be dropped off at either Activities Desk. We will have about 140 homeless students this year. If you would like to contribute funds for a duffel bag with contents it costs approximately $145. Any questions, contact Doris at 217-652-6636. GIVING HEARTS DAY February 13 is Giving Hearts Day. Giving is something that brings you joy, satisfaction, and fulfillment like nothing else can. Giving Hearts Day is an opportunity to donate to charity organizations and those in need. It is a great way to show compassion and help those that need our help. There are many Lake Ashton charities you can support on this day. The best gifts to give are those from the heart! RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS DAY One can never go wrong with kindness, and there can never be too much of it. The idea behind National Random Acts of Kindness Day on February 17 is to cultivate feelings of kindness and brighten up someone’s day. Every small act of kindness is significant. It may seem like it doesn’t accomplish much but, just like the domino effect, one act of kindness can lead to more positive outcomes. Pay for the person behind you in the drive through, hold the door for a stranger, don’t hold back from uplifting others with compliments and compassion on this day. HEARTFELT HUGS A group of LA Residents donate their time, talent and treasure by crocheting or knitting baby blankets and baby hats for Winter Haven Women’s Hospital and for the needy. This is such a worthy cause and so greatly appreciated. Blankets are made on our own time (no meetings!!) and dropped off for delivery. It is a fun way to spend your evenings, watching tv, creating a baby blanket to donate and it is so rewarding. If you are interested in this project, contact MJ Richards at mjmrichards517@gmail.com for more information. No battle in your life will last forever! Neither will every blessing last forever. If you are in a blessing right now enjoy it because there will always be another battle. I spoke with a resident this week about his wife and another condition that came out of the blue. They have been through a lot but push through together like a team as if they are fighting together. The first thing that comes to mind is an old saying “Embrace the Struggle”. This morning I saw him again and like always he was positive and upbeat. He actually asked me how I was and how my family was. Talk about a perfect example of how Iron sharpens Iron. While I was trying to encourage him, he was trying to encourage me! My hope is that when another battle comes your way you push through and endure it because there will always be another blessing. -Alex Fuertes, Maintenance Supervisor

L.A. LOOKS Wildlife Corner by Barbara Ann Comer The gopher tortoise is one of the only two tortoises native to the United States (the other is the Texas Tortoise). How does a tortoise differ from a turtle? A tortoise is merely a turtle that lives on land. They should never be placed in water. They are found in Florida in the scrub habitat where it's typically sandy. Their favorite foods include Prickly Pear Cactus and Gopher Apple. They burrow and provide housing for over 70 other kinds of animals like burrowing owls, raccoons, opossums, snakes and rats. It's hard not to notice when one is renovating its home because the dirt flies out the front door with gusto. These burrows are typically 10 - 35 feet long. Gopher Tortoises are occasionally seen at Lake Ashton since it borders some of their habitat on the Lake Wales Ridge. It's always a special treat to find one, however, it is illegal to handle them without a special permit. LA (LW) HOA NEWS The annual HOA Member Meeting is Sunday, February 23, 2025 at 2 pm in the Ballroom. Your Board looks forward to seeing you there. The board has hired Ami Massey to assist the Board with the day-to-day operations of the HOA. Please welcome her. Now that snowbirds are back in their Lake Ashton homes, this is a good time for all homeowners to look at the outside of their home to see if dreaded mildew has paid a visit to the paint on your house and perhaps the gutters and downspouts. Usually, this can be taken care of by power washing the surfaces. This is also a good time to evaluate the paint to see if there is significant fading. You do not need HOA permission for power washing but if you plan to have your home repainted, remember to file an ARC request. Driveway weeds that also sprang up may be sprayed or even power washed for removal. Lastly, many landscape beds may need to be freshened up with mulch and weeds sprayed or pulled. It was planted as a forage grass for cattle and livestock, but it quickly became out of control, spreading into waterways. Torpedograss is a type of invasive grass that grows quickly and widely in bodies of water. If not treated immediately, this grass can obstruct water flow and limit recreational use of lakes and ponds. Torpedograss can be difficult to eradicate. In order to keep Lake Ashton's waterways free of this invasive grass, Lake Ashton staff and our aquatics vendor conduct on-site tours of each pond and ensure there is a treatment plan in place. Central Native Plants of Florida By Lynn Davis Planting Native Flowers has many benefits. Native Plants require the use of less water, fertilizing, and use of pesticides. All of these are money savers, besides the plants being tolerant of Central Florida conditions. Meet the liatris elegans, also known as the dense gray-flower. It belongs to the aster and daisy family. It thrives best in well drained sandy soil and full sun. The liatris is an excellent companion to mixed pollinating gardens. It attracts both bees and hummingbirds. Its tall height of four feet requires it to be staked or placed amongst other tall varieties of natives such as salvia, goldenrod or even Mexican petunias. You should always group plants by their needs such as; soil, sunlight and watering. The Liatris Elegans will go dormant in winter. Though it’s a short-lived perennial, it’s easily grown from seeds. Go to Florida Wildflower Cooperative for more information on obtaining seeds or visit UF/IFAS extension in Bartow. REMINDER TO A LL RESID ENTS: Under no circumstance should residents conduct work of any kind on CDD property. This includes ponds, common areas, or conservation/wetland areas. If there are any concerns regarding pond erosion or other areas in need of maintenance, please contact LA (LW) CDD Community Director Christine Wells (cwells@lakeashtoncdd.com) or LA II (WH) CDD Community Director Karen Van Kirk (kvankirk@lakeashton2cdd.com). SAFETY NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH (NW) CORNER By Fay Wood, NW Chief On Monday, February 3 at 9 am, the Lake Ashton Neighborhood Watch “Meet the Police Chiefs Forum” will take place at Monday Coffee in the Clubhouse Ballroom. Special guests include the Lake Wales and Winter Haven Police Chiefs discussing what is happening in their cities. All public safety groups (Citizens Assisted Patrol, Community Emergency Response Team) and CDD and HOA leadership are encouraged to attend in showing community support for all law enforcement. We all try to adhere to traffic laws but unfortunately, for whatever reason we may deviate from them and meet a Law Enforcement Officer or Deputy. Here are some tips to consider if you are pulled over: Pull your car to the RIGHT shoulder off the roadway (unless directed otherwise over by the officer) 1. Turn your music off. Put your car in park. Put your driver or passenger window down, whichever side the officer is approaching. 2. Keep your hands on the steering wheel until the officer makes contact. 3. At night, put on your dome light so the officer can clearly see you. 4. Stay in your car unless directed otherwise by the officer and have your driver’s license, registration and proof of insurance ready. Know what it looks like and where it is in your car. Print out your proof of insurance as your cell phone battery may be depleted, or you may not have cell reception. 5. Be respectful and courteous. They are doing their job keeping us all safe. Do not say "I wasn't paying attention" or "I didn't know how fast I was going." You are driving a 3,000 lb.+ vehicle that can injure others or worse and you need to pay attention. This is not a valid excuse. Do not say you are speeding because you are late as lack of prior planning on your part is not a valid excuse. Do not say you did not know what the speed limit is, ignorance of the law is not an excuse to violate it. 6. Please do not argue as you are not going to win that argument, at least not on the side of the road. Go to court if you think you have a valid argument. Our law enforcement personnel put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe! So, whenever you meet one, just say thanks for their service to our community As always, your Neighborhood Watch Team wishes you health and happiness! ROAD SAFETY REMINDER Residents are reminded that our roads are extremely narrow and require us, as residents, to exercise extreme caution when driving, walking, or riding a bike. We must also exercise common sense when parking on the street. Please do not impede the flow of traffic by parking your vehicles directly (or nearly) across the street from another vehicle. While golf carts and vehicles might be able to get through, emergency vehicles cannot. This could make the difference between a resident getting the medical attention they require or not. AVOIDABLE PET PARK HAZARDS By John Lanaken, LA Unleashed The toys we bring to the parks can be extremely hazardous to our pets. Many items can be swallowed and only extracted with surgery (soft squishy balls are the worst). These toys can block the digestive track and can be fatal to the pet or its owner's wallet. Large dogs covet the squishy, scented balls and can swallow balls over 2 inches. Tennis balls left at the parks can be run over by the mowers and the pieces ingested. Suggestions: • Bring only medium to large balls that are hard (difficult to compress). • Take home anything you bring to the park. Let the next owner bring their own toy. • Pick up and discard any balls you find that are potentially hazardous. Many of you know Baxter, the chocolate lab. We are please to say he is in recovery.

CITIZENS ASSISTED PATROL By David Muller The Citizens' Assisted Patrol (CAP) organization is making major changes but will not have any issues concerning what it offers. Lake Ashton Mike Weissberg, the CAP coordinator, has retired effective January 31. Mike has been outstanding in his organization of CAP and the conduit from the Sheriff's Office to Lake Ashton to keep procedures and communication on a smooth path. He made sure the CAP had all the supplies from the Sheriff's Department and facilitated the accuracy and timely reports so the CAP members would receive credit for their volunteerism. With no hesitation I know I can say, we all wish you well, Mike and THANK YOU. We welcome Dave Bishop to the coordinator post. He has been working with Mike for a smooth transition. Dave is a CERT member and past HOA director for the Winter Haven HOA. George Fetcho will still manage maintenance and training and David Muller will continue maintenance of the monthly CAP schedule charts for the members. Lake Ashton residents will still see the patrol vehicles, knowing the Sheriff's Dept. is looking out for them through its volunteers. We are always looking for volunteers. Please step up for two hours a week and become a member. You will receive training and uniform (hat, shirt and ID) at no charge. Join us! For more information contact Dave Bishop at dbishop1867@gmail.com. GOLF CART SAFETY REMINDER The law requires that a person operating a golf cart on public roads or streets who is under 18 years of age must possess a valid learner’s permit or driver’s license. Please note, Lake Wales PD and Winter Haven PD can issue a ticket for violations of this law. Adults should not place young children on their laps between them and the steering wheel as this creates a hazardous condition for the children in the case of a panic stop or accidents. Also note that the community has a posted speed limit of 20 mph and this also applies to golf carts. Please observe safety guidelines and all traffic laws when operating golf carts!

ASHES-TO-GO By Heidi White On Ash Wednesday, March 5 between 10 am and 11 am, the Very Reverend Deke Miller from Holy Cross Episcopal Church in Winter Haven will distribute Ashes-To-Go. All are welcome! Simply drive or walk through the portecochère outside the main door of the Clubhouse to receive ashes on your forehead and a blessing. Ash Wednesday is “[t]he first of the forty days of Lent, named for the custom of placing blessed ashes on the foreheads of worshipers at Ash Wednesday services. The ashes are a sign of penitence and a reminder of mortality, and may be imposed with the sign of the cross.” Ash Wednesday is always 46 days before Easter, which is determined as the Sunday following the first full moon that happens on or after the March equinox (which is always March 21). Lent is 40 days long, not including Sundays. This year, Easter is April 20. For those who are able, you are welcome to come to Ash Wednesday services at 12 pm or 6:30 pm at Holy Cross, 201 Kipling Ln., Winter Haven. LAKE ASHTON’S FINE ARTS & PHOTOGRAPHY SHOW By Lyn Rogers The 17th Annual Lake Ashton Fine Arts & Photography Show will be on display in the Clubhouse Ballroom on Saturday, March 8 from 1 to 4 pm. In the meantime, BOLLA members have been busy making and delivering blankets. Over 300 blankets were delivered to grateful recipients in the last few weeks: the majority to homeless teens. CLUBS LA BLACK HERITAGE CLUB By Pamela June We celebrate Black History Month to honor the significant contributions and achievements of African Americans, and to recognize and reflect on the sacrifices, struggles and triumphs of African Americans in American History. African American history has historically and intentionally been denied, buried and subjugated. Primarily in the South, there was a concerted effort to suppress Black History, particularly the history of slavery, Jim Crow laws, and reconstruction. School curriculum either mentioned nothing or distorted the facts. This month is an opportunity to educate others, to recognize the rich heritage and vast diversity of African American culture and to celebrate the contributions of African Americans across the vast spectrums of American society. It recognizes that African American History is American History. Black History month serves to uplift African American history and to ensure our stories and legacies are not erased and not forgotten. #BlackHistory365 CAMERA CLUB By Larry Hillock The February Camera Club meeting has been canceled. The next meeting will be held on Monday, March 10 at 10:30 in the Clubhouse Cinema. Members are encouraged to suggest future outings and possible guest speakers. All residents are welcome to attend. GARDEN CLUB By Pam Klawinski Due to the cooler weather the January meeting was cancelled. The next meeting will be Wednesday, February 12 at 10 am in the Pavilion. Topics: • “DON’T toss those holiday poinsettias and Christmas cactus away just yet!” Garden Club Team Members will demonstrate the simple way to continue to enjoy these plants throughout the year and get them ready for the next holiday season. • Clever ways to start seeds. Save the date of April 9 from 9 am to 12:30 pm in the Pavilion for our 4th Annual Garden Club Plant Sale. This is the Club’s main fundraiser. The club welcomes anyone interested in learning, maintaining or just acquiring knowledge to attend any meeting. No green thumb necessary. LA DEMOCRATIC CLUB By Paul Ritz The Lake Ashton Democratic Club will hold their monthly meeting February 6 in the HFC Community Room at 5:30 pm. This meeting is the Winter Social. LA ROCKERS By Annie Lutz LA Rockers is a group who paint rocks and hide them throughout the community to share kindness and place welcome rocks at the homes of our new neighbors. Our mission is “One message at just the right moment can change someone’s entire day, outlook, life”. We hope you have been lucky enough to find one of our rocks! Come see some of our rocks exhibited at the Club Expo at the Clubhouse on February 5 from 10 to 12. You can find out more information about us!

If you have found rocks, stop by and share your story with us. We meet on the first and third Wednesdays of the month at the HFC. The first Wednesday is usually a teaching class for our current members. The third Wednesday is what we call free paint, and we invite new folks to give us a try. If you are interested in pursuing the possibility of becoming a Rocker let MJ know at least 5 days before the free paint by emailing mjmrichards517@gmail.com. Everything you need for that day will be provided. We appreciate all our neighbors who find rocks and share them on Talk of Lake Ashton Facebook page for others to smile and for us to know our rocks were found. GENEALOGY CLUB By Jane Imparl Come meet your neighbors and friends and learn how to find those elusive ancestors. We meet on Wednesday, February 12 at 2 pm in the HFC Craft Room. Bring your questions and ancestors stories to share. Hope to see you then. Any questions? Call Jane at 815-545-6655. LAKE ASHTON FRIENDS OF MEALS ON WHEELS By Marcia Santino This month we shine a spotlight on Meals on Wheels volunteers, Jill and Randall Groves. Married for 28 years, Jill and Randall moved from Fremont, Ohio to Lake Ashton in 2021. They have been Meals on Wheels delivery volunteers since last June, delivering meals as “floaters” for any open route in the Winter Haven area. They have delivered to most of the 20 Winter Haven routes spending no more than 3 hours total to and from home. When asked what they would say to someone considering becoming a volunteer, Jill said: “It is very rewarding to help these sweet and grateful homebound people with a small investment of our time.” Randall added: “There is no obligation to give it a try. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.” Meals on Wheels Polk receives no state or federal funding. It sustains through community-based charity and volunteers. Volunteer opportunities include: kitchen preparation / packaging, clean-up, meal delivery and thrift store clerks. Please consider joining Lake Ashton Friends of Meals on Meals (“LA FOMOW”) to help promote this essential non-profit organization in our community. To become a member or for more information please email lafomow@gmail.com. Reminder: Next “Third Thursday Second Chance Donation” drive is February 20. By Lynn Davis / Karen McLemore Exciting things are sprouting with the Lake Ashton Community Garden Club as we prepare for vegetable gardening! While separate from the Garden Club, our mission is to create a sustainable community garden that brings neighbors together. Members and potential members attended our first meeting on January 22nd, where we shared updates and plans for what’s ahead. Future meetings will be held every third Wednesday from 1:30 – 3:00 p.m. in the HFC Craft Room. Thanks to the incredible support of CDD2, Clubhouse and HFC staff, and generous community donations, we’re turning our vision into reality! Proceeds from the successful poinsettia sale are already helping us expand with more raised beds. Stay connected with us on Facebook or reach out via email at LACommunityGarden2024@ gmail.com for updates and to get involved. Together, let’s cultivate something beautiful!

LA PICKLEBALL By Mark McDuff The Lake Ashton Pickleball Association, LAPA, is comprised of residents who enjoy pickleball, from Beginners to Advanced. LAPA is a great way to connect with other players while making pickleball more fun. Here are a few things LAPA does: • Supply balls to all courts • Coordinate Training Clinics, Mixer Tournaments, and Social Events • Represent the members to the CDD • Purchase essential items that go beyond the CDD’s responsibility • Manage league teams that compete with neighboring communities Membership forms and a submission box are located at the HFC or the activity desk at the Clubhouse. The cost is $12 for January through December. If you sign up after January the fee is prorated by $1 per month. For example $9 if your membership starts in April. Join us for another year of pickleball fun! FRIENDLY BOCCE GROUP By Stephanie Iszak We would like to invite all Lake Ashton residents to come out on Mondays and Fridays from 10 am to 1 pm to play some fun games of Bocce Ball. No experience is required. Anyone who is playing would be more than happy to teach you and go over the Lake Ashton Bocce Ball rules and regulations. Our 2025 “Newbie Clinic” was a great success. The cold weather did not hinder everyone from coming out. Our Friendly Bocce Tailgate parties for 2025 will be held through April from 4 to 6 pm on the first and third Fridays of the month. Bring your non-alcoholic drinks and an appetizer to share. (Drinks may be purchased at Charm City). This is a great opportunity to socialize and play some games. The Friendly Bocce Tournament will be held in March. More details to follow. Questions? Contact Stephanie Iszak (609-980-9505, siszak@comcast.net) or Tammy Shields (863-632-2024, tammy.shields1221@gmail.com). We are looking forward to having many new Friendly Bocce players! LAVA AUXILIARY By Chris Graves MAGIC YEARS CLUB By Lynne Judd MARK YOUR CALENDARS – Wednesday, February 19 at 6 pm (special time), stop by the Clubhouse near the stage to support the Girl Scouts’ “Cookies for the Military”. This is certainly a “Sweet Deal” because you can not only purchase cookies for yourself and friends, but also make a donation (optional) towards the purchase of Girl Scout Cookies for active military. Non-members are welcome to stay for our meeting at 6:30 p.m. At the January meeting we presented a check for $5,000 to the Chairman (Captain Robert Buehn Retired USN) of Operation New Uniform (ONU), the veteran charity for the 2024 Craft Fair. ONU helps train retired military and their spouses for civilian jobs. The next Craft Fair is October 25. The Vendor application packet can be picked up at the Clubhouse. We have limited number of spaces available. God Bless America! Disney lovers continue to share knowledge, experiences and each other's company at the Magic Years Club meetings on the second Monday of each month at 7 pm in the HFC Craft Room. We usually do a little trivia quiz for fun and anyone can bring questions. Any Lake Ashton member is welcome to join. There is also a Lake Ashton Disney Lovers Facebook page that anyone can share info to once you are a member, and where you might just learn about upcoming events or new information related to WDW. Twenty two members of our group met at Columbia Restaurant in Celebration for a delicious dinner in December (and got to see it snow in the Town Center) and a group of nine met for lunch at Blaze Pizza in Disney Springs in January. Come join us at our next meeting on February 10 at 7 pm in the HFC Craft Room!

LAMGA By David Kubissa Jan. 8 was the start of the LAMGA season, but abnormally cold weather turned the day into a tale of Frozen Foursomes. Only 16 players had signed up, but by the 9 a.m. shotgun start, the count had dropped to 13 hardy golfers. The temperature hovered around 41 degrees. How cold was it? So cold that Ed Commons wrapped himself in a festive red blanket while posing for a photo with the rest of his foursome. When the day’s round ended, the team of Steve Morgan, Mark Kennedy, Steve Kettells and Dana Donnelly stood atop the leaderboard with a score of 130 in a game requiring two best nets on each hole. Bob Zelazny was closest to the pin on No. 17 East. Though Jan. 8 was the official start of the LAMGA season, the celebration was reserved for the Jan. 29 Season Opener game and luncheon where LAMGA members received a golf towel with an embroidered Lake Ashton Golf logo. The game was again two nets, with hopes of far warmer temperatures. If you’re new to Lake Ashton and interested in joining the league and its weekly Wednesday games, you can find enrollment forms on the LAMGA bulletin board in the pro shop. There’s also an abundance of information about the LAMGA board, bylaws and schedule of games on the LAMGA web page at LakeAshtonLiving.com. Four games are on tap in February. For a full list of the lineup in February and March, check the LAMGA bulletin board or web page on Lake Ashton Living. Pictured above, clockwise: John Milsom, Charles Roland, Ed Commons and Richard Boesel start the chilly round on No. 1 East. Steve Kettells, Dana Donnelly, Steve Morgan and Mark Kennedy finish No. 18 East. Bob Zelazny, Tom Murphy and Jim Williams make the turn on 18 before heading to No. 1 East. Don Abbott and Paul Fichtman get ready to take on No. 7 East. LALGA By Beverly Hines February is known as the month of love because it includes Valentine's Day, a day to express love and affection. For LALGA, it is the Month of Love & Friendship & Golf. If you are not already a member, we encourage you to join in the fun & fellowship. The LALGA We-Care-for-Kids Committee is holding one more charity drive this season. From 1/27 to 2/4/2025 they collect travel-size deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, hand lotion, lip balm and feminine hygiene products. They deliver them to the local High School Nurses who provide the toiletries to the students who need them. Please continue the generosity demonstrated in our recent Food & Toy Drives to help these students ease the burdens of their current situations by bringing some travel size toiletries to the Pro Shop January 27 - February 4, 2025. It’s a great way to begin the new year! Thanks much, We-Carefor-Kids Committee Games for February: Feb 4 – Individual Play; Feb 10 – 11 – Member-Member Tournament with the theme “Hearts and Carts” with lunch after play on second day (NO online registration, sign-up and pay by check in Pro Shop); Feb 18 – Team Play; Feb 25 – “Beat” the Pro – Pick Your Own Partner Play. Check the bulletin board in the Pro Shop for more information and to sign up or, when available, register online at the LALGA Golf Registration at the LA Living website. Blue Team Wins Lake Ashton’s Solheim Tournament - The annual Solheim Tournament at Lake Ashton concluded with an impressive victory for the Blue Team! This year’s competition brought out exceptional talent and teamwork as players battled it out over two days of intense golf. In a closely fought contest, the Blue Team displayed remarkable consistency and strategic play, edging out the Red Team for a well-earned triumph. Despite the Red Team’s determined efforts and strong individual performances, they couldn’t match the Blue Team’s cohesion and resilience on the greens. The spirit of camaraderie and friendly competition among players made the tournament a resounding success. A special thanks goes to the organizers and participants who ensured everything ran smoothly. We look forward to another exciting Solheim Tournament at Lake Ashton next year. Mur Bouman, Committee Chair Mark your calendars and plan to play in the March 11th West vs East Partner Match Play with lunch after play. Partners from the East will play against Partners from the West. Who will win? East or West. Red Hoagland Challenge update: 1st place- Joanne McKinley $148.35; 2nd place – Liz Leigh $123.25; 3rd place – Sandra Lancaster $122.75; and 4th place – Bonnie Simonette $116.25. The Challenge is ongoing until the end of May. Pictured left: Rita Lee, who got her third Hole in One on December 13, 2024, less than 6 weeks since her second Hole in One!
