LAMGA By David Kubissa Jan. 8 was the start of the LAMGA season, but abnormally cold weather turned the day into a tale of Frozen Foursomes. Only 16 players had signed up, but by the 9 a.m. shotgun start, the count had dropped to 13 hardy golfers. The temperature hovered around 41 degrees. How cold was it? So cold that Ed Commons wrapped himself in a festive red blanket while posing for a photo with the rest of his foursome. When the day’s round ended, the team of Steve Morgan, Mark Kennedy, Steve Kettells and Dana Donnelly stood atop the leaderboard with a score of 130 in a game requiring two best nets on each hole. Bob Zelazny was closest to the pin on No. 17 East. Though Jan. 8 was the official start of the LAMGA season, the celebration was reserved for the Jan. 29 Season Opener game and luncheon where LAMGA members received a golf towel with an embroidered Lake Ashton Golf logo. The game was again two nets, with hopes of far warmer temperatures. If you’re new to Lake Ashton and interested in joining the league and its weekly Wednesday games, you can find enrollment forms on the LAMGA bulletin board in the pro shop. There’s also an abundance of information about the LAMGA board, bylaws and schedule of games on the LAMGA web page at LakeAshtonLiving.com. Four games are on tap in February. For a full list of the lineup in February and March, check the LAMGA bulletin board or web page on Lake Ashton Living. Pictured above, clockwise: John Milsom, Charles Roland, Ed Commons and Richard Boesel start the chilly round on No. 1 East. Steve Kettells, Dana Donnelly, Steve Morgan and Mark Kennedy finish No. 18 East. Bob Zelazny, Tom Murphy and Jim Williams make the turn on 18 before heading to No. 1 East. Don Abbott and Paul Fichtman get ready to take on No. 7 East.
