Central Native Plants of Florida By Lynn Davis Planting Native Flowers has many benefits. Native Plants require the use of less water, fertilizing, and use of pesticides. All of these are money savers, besides the plants being tolerant of Central Florida conditions. Meet the liatris elegans, also known as the dense gray-flower. It belongs to the aster and daisy family. It thrives best in well drained sandy soil and full sun. The liatris is an excellent companion to mixed pollinating gardens. It attracts both bees and hummingbirds. Its tall height of four feet requires it to be staked or placed amongst other tall varieties of natives such as salvia, goldenrod or even Mexican petunias. You should always group plants by their needs such as; soil, sunlight and watering. The Liatris Elegans will go dormant in winter. Though it’s a short-lived perennial, it’s easily grown from seeds. Go to Florida Wildflower Cooperative for more information on obtaining seeds or visit UF/IFAS extension in Bartow.
