ASHES-TO-GO By Heidi White On Ash Wednesday, March 5 between 10 am and 11 am, the Very Reverend Deke Miller from Holy Cross Episcopal Church in Winter Haven will distribute Ashes-To-Go. All are welcome! Simply drive or walk through the portecochère outside the main door of the Clubhouse to receive ashes on your forehead and a blessing. Ash Wednesday is “[t]he first of the forty days of Lent, named for the custom of placing blessed ashes on the foreheads of worshipers at Ash Wednesday services. The ashes are a sign of penitence and a reminder of mortality, and may be imposed with the sign of the cross.” Ash Wednesday is always 46 days before Easter, which is determined as the Sunday following the first full moon that happens on or after the March equinox (which is always March 21). Lent is 40 days long, not including Sundays. This year, Easter is April 20. For those who are able, you are welcome to come to Ash Wednesday services at 12 pm or 6:30 pm at Holy Cross, 201 Kipling Ln., Winter Haven. TRASH TO TREASURE By Diane Dillon Blankets of Love at Lake Ashton (BOLLA) will hold its popular Trash to Treasure sale in the Clubhouse Ballroom on March 14 and 15. The event will be open to residents only on Friday, March 14 from 4 pm to 8 pm and open to the public Saturday, March 15 from 8 am to 2 pm. Residents are welcome to shop on Saturday as well. Collection of gently used items, donated by generous Lake Ashton residents, will take place in the Clubhouse Ballroom March 11 — 14. Details regarding collection times will be announced shortly. Residents who are moving or may wish to donate small furniture items before that time may contact Amity Kokochak at 813-719-5579, or Gloria Fitzsimmons at 863-207-2552 to make special arrangements. BOLLA will only be able to accept large furniture at a date closer to the event. Trash to Treasure, held every two years, is the major fundraiser for BOLLA. 100% of the proceeds go directly towards materials and supplies to make blankets for children in crisis in Polk County. In the meantime, BOLLA members have been busy making and delivering blankets. Over 300 blankets were delivered to grateful recipients in the last few weeks: the majority to homeless teens. The members of BOLLA wish to thank everyone at Lake Ashton for their previous support and generosity towards Trash to Treasure. BOLLA is a 501c recognized charity. Receipts are available for large donations. ST.
