If you have found rocks, stop by and share your story with us. We meet on the first and third Wednesdays of the month at the HFC. The first Wednesday is usually a teaching class for our current members. The third Wednesday is what we call free paint, and we invite new folks to give us a try. If you are interested in pursuing the possibility of becoming a Rocker let MJ know at least 5 days before the free paint by emailing mjmrichards517@gmail.com. Everything you need for that day will be provided. We appreciate all our neighbors who find rocks and share them on Talk of Lake Ashton Facebook page for others to smile and for us to know our rocks were found. GENEALOGY CLUB By Jane Imparl Come meet your neighbors and friends and learn how to find those elusive ancestors. We meet on Wednesday, February 12 at 2 pm in the HFC Craft Room. Bring your questions and ancestors stories to share. Hope to see you then. Any questions? Call Jane at 815-545-6655. LAKE ASHTON FRIENDS OF MEALS ON WHEELS By Marcia Santino This month we shine a spotlight on Meals on Wheels volunteers, Jill and Randall Groves. Married for 28 years, Jill and Randall moved from Fremont, Ohio to Lake Ashton in 2021. They have been Meals on Wheels delivery volunteers since last June, delivering meals as “floaters” for any open route in the Winter Haven area. They have delivered to most of the 20 Winter Haven routes spending no more than 3 hours total to and from home. When asked what they would say to someone considering becoming a volunteer, Jill said: “It is very rewarding to help these sweet and grateful homebound people with a small investment of our time.” Randall added: “There is no obligation to give it a try. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.” Meals on Wheels Polk receives no state or federal funding. It sustains through community-based charity and volunteers. Volunteer opportunities include: kitchen preparation / packaging, clean-up, meal delivery and thrift store clerks. Please consider joining Lake Ashton Friends of Meals on Meals (“LA FOMOW”) to help promote this essential non-profit organization in our community. To become a member or for more information please email lafomow@gmail.com. Reminder: Next “Third Thursday Second Chance Donation” drive is February 20. By Lynn Davis / Karen McLemore Exciting things are sprouting with the Lake Ashton Community Garden Club as we prepare for vegetable gardening! While separate from the Garden Club, our mission is to create a sustainable community garden that brings neighbors together. Members and potential members attended our first meeting on January 22nd, where we shared updates and plans for what’s ahead. Future meetings will be held every third Wednesday from 1:30 – 3:00 p.m. in the HFC Craft Room. Thanks to the incredible support of CDD2, Clubhouse and HFC staff, and generous community donations, we’re turning our vision into reality! Proceeds from the successful poinsettia sale are already helping us expand with more raised beds. Stay connected with us on Facebook or reach out via email at LACommunityGarden2024@ gmail.com for updates and to get involved. Together, let’s cultivate something beautiful!
