Under no circumstance should vehicles park in the circular drive. It is for golf cart parking only. When parking in the circular drive please fight the urge to angle in and park with both tires touching the curb. The Basketball Court near the west parking by the Shuffleboard Courts is used as overflow parking for golf carts during special events. Signage will be placed at the entrance to the parking lot.

For those remaining in Lake Ashton throughout the summer, Staff is working hard to create a fun summertime activities schedule including the third Annual Summer Music Series featuring local bands playing at the Clubhouse and HFC from May to August. Check out the schedule on page XX. Also, a HUGE Fourth of July celebration is the works. Stay tuned for more information! Lake Ashton residents are truly amazing, not only because of their immense amount of talent, but their willingness to help those in need. A budget workshop and regular board meeting was held on March 16. During this time of year Supervisors and Staff are actively working on the preliminary 2027 budget. Residents are encouraged to attend both LACDD and LAIICDD meetings to be part of the budgeting process and let your opinions be heard. During this time, many residents choose to go on vacation or return to their homes in the North. This transition is a familiar pattern, as the community shifts from the high activity of the winter season to a more relaxed summer period. While some residents may pause their regular activities during this time, the HFC will continue to offer a full schedule of events and programs throughout the summer. There will be no reduction in activities; residents who remain can look forward to ongoing opportunities for engagement and recreation. Please mark your calendar for the upcoming Lake Ashton II Community Development District Meeting. This important meeting is scheduled for April 16 at 9 am in the HFC Community Center. Attending the meeting provides an opportunity for community members to stay informed about district matters, participate in discussions, and connect with neighbors. Your involvement helps support the continued growth and well-being of Lake Ashton. Lake Ashton residents are invited to spend an enjoyable evening featuring live music performed by the Good Stuff Band, scheduled for April 10 from 6 to 9 pm. To complement the evening popular food trucks “Perez Gut” and “Something Different” will be on site from 3:30 to 6:30 PM. Both offer a variety of food including Philly cheesesteak sandwiches, burgers, and hot dogs with special toppings. Bring your friends and neighbors. You do not want to miss this lively night of entertainment and great food. Be on the lookout for announcements about “Lake Ashton’s 250th USA Anniversary Celebration”, communitywide event taking place at both the Clubhouse and the HFC. Some of the activities that will make up this historic celebration include a gala golf cart parade, food trucks featuring a variety of menu items, and a lively dance. Not only will an official proclamation take place in front of Lake Ashton’s Memorial, but there will be activities leading up to the 4th of July including an All American Summer Night at the Clubhouse outdoor pool. Stay tuned to media in May for details. There is so much more to come! Lake Ashton 2 CDD would like to extend our heartfelt best wishes to all residents who will soon be returning to their other homes. We wish you safe travels and a wonderful time until you return. Your presence in our community is genuinely appreciated, and we look forward to welcoming you back when you return for the next season. 10

RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT By Marianne Zak Lake Ashton commemorates April as "Autism Acceptance Month" which was retitled in April of 2011. It was formerly called "Autism Awareness Month" which began in 1970. According to the CDC's ADD Network, 1 in 31 born in 2014 are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. The symptoms vary widely among individuals. It occurs in all races, ethnic and socioeconomic groups. It is three times more common in boys than girls. This month read the "Resident Spotlight" which features a resident who is on the autism spectrum. Meet Garrett Minster, a resident living on Hogan Lane, formerly from Missouri and Kansas. Garrett was home schooled throughout his childhood up through high school. He completed his Associate’s Degree in Graphic Design at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas. He then enrolled in Fort Hays State University in Kansas. After moving to Lake Ashton, he completed his degree at Fort Hays online. Garrett earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Web Design in July of 2025. At both JCCC and Fort Hays, Garrett graduated with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. 10 Y TEKO WARRANTY * x staed L s Q y 14 C M L s 0 G E 8 Y Y LITHIUM BATTERY 0 c , F t C y: 86339531 $2200*

Garrett has a wide range of computer skills. He can create websites, is proficient in coding in HTML and CSS, and manipulating graphics and images using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. He has served as a website designer and web master for multiple local businesses. As a hobby, Garrett restores and upgrades old computers. He recently took obsolete computers and upgraded them with new operating systems (e.g. Microsoft Windows, Linux) for several residents of Lake Ashton. Garrett is a lifelong Disney fan with a large collection of Disney memorabilia. He will be generously displaying his Disney toy collection in the Lake Ashton Clubhouse Card Room, from Friday, April 24 through Sunday, April 26. Stop by between the hours of 10:30 am and 1:30 pm, and then 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm, to view his collection. Garrett has many Disney toys that are no longer available and are highly collectible. His favorite part of the entire collection is Main Street USA. The display will include a motorized miniature monorail, cast member exclusive merchandise, pressed pennies from Disneyland, Walt Disney World, and even original bricks from Walt Disney’s first cartoon studio dating back to 1922! The display will be free to all Lake Ashton residents and their guests. Garrett intends to donate his collection to a museum somewhere in Central Florida. He said, "I was blessed with all these toys as a kid and I'd rather keep it in a group for people to see, rather than sell it all and separate it to different people". He enjoys going to local events, visiting Florida amusement parks and playing Nintendo games. He is a member of Bok Tower Gardens and enjoys “the beauty of it all”. His autism has never deterred him from being the amazing man he is. In fact, he is another reason why Lake Ashton is "Simply the Best". 15

SPREADING KINDNESS In a 55+ retirement community, life often slows down just enough for residents to rediscover something deeply meaningful: connection. With more time to enjoy the present, people have the opportunity to build a culture rooted in kindness, compassion, and mutual support. This stage of life can be one of the richest when kindness is intentionally woven into everyday living. Often, the smallest gestures make the biggest difference. A warm smile during a morning walk, a friendly wave, or simply asking a neighbor how they’re doing can brighten someone’s entire day and create a strong sense of belonging. Inclusion is one of the most powerful ways to spread kindness. Welcoming new residents to dinners, card games, or fitness classes helps ease transitions and build lasting friendships, ensuring no one feels like an outsider in a place meant to feel like home. Volunteering within the community also strengthens connections. Delivering meals, checking on neighbors, or offering companionship to those who are ill or grieving brings comfort and gives residents a sense of purpose and fulfillment. Kindness also means practicing patience, respect, and self-compassion as residents navigate the changes that come with aging. Ultimately, a culture of kindness is built through everyday actions. By choosing empathy, generosity, and understanding, residents help create a community where everyone feels valued and truly thrives together. HOMELESS GRADUATING SENIORS By Doris Reisinger We are winding down on donations for 2026. April 10 will be the last collection day. Feel free to call me to pick up domestic items rather than dropping them at either the Clubhouse or HFC. Financial donations can be dropped at either location as well. If you need any information about donations there are sheets at the Clubhouse Media Center and at the HFC activities rack. Some examples are restaurant gift cards in $5, $10 or $15 denominations. $130 provides everything including the rolling duffel bag to give to students. Please make checks out to Polk County Public Schools with Homeless HS Seniors in memo. Any questions feel free to contact Doris at 217-652-6636. SHOE DRIVE ONGOING By Carolyn Neuberger We still need your help! We are still collecting gently worn men’s, women’s & children’s shoes, sneakers, golf shoes, Crocs etc. The shoes collected from this fundraiser becomes an economic lifeline for microentrepreneurs in developing nations. There are collection boxes in the Clubhouse, the HFC and at the Pro Shop next to the lost and found. Please go through your shoes and support our cause. We will be collecting your donations until July 10. Thank you for your support. Contact Carolyn Neuberger at 516-317-0120 with any questions. 16

L.A. LOOKS Wildlife Corner Photo & Article By Barbara Ann Comer The Green Heron is a secretive and sassy heron with a lot of personality. Although their plumage actually consists of a variety of colors, these small herons are mainly a dark greenish on the back and crown with a chestnut colored neck. This rather common heron has short yellow legs that become quite orange in the males during breeding season. The young birds are heavily streaked. Green Herons can be quite vocal at times making loud chicken-like clucks and a loud "kyow" as they fly away. This usually solitary heron often perches on branches in the water leaning out as far as possible to snatch a small minnow as it unsuspectingly swims by. The neck that appears short most of the time can extend farther than the viewer expects. They frequently raise their crowns sporting a "bad hair day" look. LA (LW) HOA CORNER By Deanne Mayne The Lake Wales Architectural Review Committee (ARC) fully understands the recent freeze has damaged many plants and trees in the Lake Ashton community. Sourcing new plants and trees may be difficult, given a widespread impact on the entire state. The current Lake Wales Architectural Rules and Guidelines state: 16.2 Landscaping Beds A landscaping project that adds a new bed or changes the size of an existing bed requires ARC approval and a landscape plan. The landscape plan shall be to scale or show the distance to lot boundaries. The plan must show the existing features as well as the proposed additions and must accompany the ARC request. All work shall be within the owner’s lot boundaries. Replacing or adding plants with other plants of like size to an existing bed does not require ARC approval. No invasive plants (such as honeysuckle, bamboo, or mimosa) are permitted. New or existing plantings shall not impede the line of sight at street intersections. The addition of trees / shrubs for new or existing beds requires ARC approval. New or replacement trees must be planted at a minimum of five (5) feet from the Living Unit and five (5) feet from the property line. If a homeowner is unsure of what replacement foliage will be used by a landscaper, it would be in the homeowner’s best interest to place an ARC request stating the change. Homeowners should understand the Lake Wales Homeowner’s Association and the ARC, have our community’s best interest in mind. Note: If you do not plan on replacing a dead tree, you are still required to submit an ARC request. Removal of trees requires complete (below ground) stump removal. If you are a “Snowbird” or planning an extended vacation, please ensure you have a remediation plan if you need to replace a plant or tree via an ARC request before you leave Lake Ashton. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in this rare situation the community has undergone. UMBRELLA REMINDER Please put umbrellas down after use when visiting the Pool, Bocce Courts, or Pet Play Parks. Leaving them up can potentially cause them to become damaged by wind or rain. Replacement umbrellas cost the District approximately $70 each. 18

LAII (WH) HOA/ARC CORNER By Connie Strassberg A resident may appeal an LAII ARC denial to the LAII HOA Board of Directors within 30 days. Residents should first review the Denial Letter sent by the ARC, which explains the reasons for the denial and cites the specific rules or covenants supporting the decision. If a resident believes the ARC failed to follow proper procedures, acted arbitrarily, or violated Florida Statute 720 or the governing documents, a written appeal (email or letter) should be sent to the HOA President. The appeal should include supporting evidence and a request to be placed on the next HOA meeting agenda so the resident can present their case publicly to the Board. This allows the Board to review the evidence and governing documents and make a fair and informed decision. The HOA has five flyer slots at the top of the flyer board at the Health and Fitness Center (HFC), which contain Email Contact Authorization forms and informational flyers about the HOA and ARC. To receive email notifications from the LAII HOA, residents must submit a completed Email Authorization Form to the management company, Stambaugh (863) 324-5100. Forms can be picked up from the flyer slots, completed, and either mailed to Stambaugh or placed in the white HOA mailbox at the HFC. Without authorization, privacy laws prevent email communication. The LAII HOA website (https://stambaugh.cincwebaxis.com) provides access to announcements, posted documents, the directory, calendar, and online dues payment. First-time users should click REGISTER in the upper-right corner to create an account. The LAII HOA Board of Directors meets April 2 at 1 pm at the HFC and the ARC meets April 13 and 27 at 1 pm (check the front desk for the meeting location). Agendas are emailed to registered residents, posted in flyer slots, and shared on the Facebook group LAII HOA/ARC INFO. Winter Haven residents may join by submitting a request with their name and LAII address. 19 WATERING RESTRICTIONS The Southwest Florida Water Management District has implemented Phase III water shortage restrictions affecting Polk County, including Lake Wales and Winter Haven. Lawn and landscape watering is limited to once per week based on address numbers: 0–1 Monday, 2–3 Tuesday, 4–5 Wednesday, 6–7 Thursday, and 8–9 Friday (including common areas). Unless local governments have stricter rules, watering is allowed 12:01–4 a.m. or 8 p.m.–11:59 p.m. Residents may still handwater plants or use micro-irrigation for flower beds, shrubs, and other plant material (not lawns) on any day, but only before 8 a.m. or after 6 p.m. These measures help conserve water during dry conditions and are in effect starting April 3, 2026, and expire July 1, 2026. REMINDER TO A LL RESID ENTS: Under no circumstances should residents conduct work of any kind on CDD property. This includes ponds, common areas, or conservation/wetland areas. If there are any concerns regarding pond erosion or other areas in need of maintenance, including pavement areas or stormwater curbing, please contact LA (LW) CDD Community Director Christine Wells (cwells@lakeashtoncdd.com) for areas in Lake Wales or LA (WH) CDD Community Director Karen Van Kirk (kvankirk@lakeashton2cdd.com) for areas in Winter Haven. Staff and the district engineer may be seen behind your home reviewing any potential encroachments onto CDD property. Please ensure anything you install, including plantings, is installed within your property boundaries. Residents found to have encroachments onto CDD property will be notified, and the Board of Supervisors will determine next actions, up to and including removing the encroachment at the homeowner’s expense and restoring the area to its original condition.

SAFETY NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH (NW) CORNER By Fay Wood, NW Chief Courtesy of Law Enforcement PHISHING GETS SMARTER: HOW AI IS CHANGING ONLINE SCAMS Ever received an email that looked real but was actually a scam? That’s phishing—a trick cybercriminals use to steal your personal information. Now, with artificial intelligence (AI), these scams are becoming even more convincing. AI is changing the face of phishing, making it harder to detect and more dangerous than ever. Understanding how these scams work and how to protect yourself is essential in today’s digital landscape. HOW AI IS MAKING PHISHING HARDER TO DETECT PERSONALIZED ATTACKS: AI can analyze social media and other online information to compile personal details and create customized phishing messages. By gathering bits of personal information, AI can craft emails and messages that appear tailored specifically to you, making them much harder to recognize as fake. Better Writing AI-generated emails often contain fewer spelling and grammar mistakes, making malicious messages appear more legitimate and professional. Voice and Video Tricks AI can copy someone’s voice or create realistic fake videos that look like someone you know. For example, you might receive a call from a friend asking for money, but it could actually be an impersonator using AI technology. 20 More Targeted and Adaptive Attacks AI doesn’t just create convincing messages—it transforms how cybercriminals approach scams. AIpowered systems can: • Analyze phishing results in real time • Rapidly fine-tune attack strategies • Create highly personalized messages for specific targets • Learn and improve from each attempt This adaptive approach makes AI-driven phishing increasingly difficult for individuals and security systems to detect. As attacks evolve, they become more sophisticated and tailored to exploit specific vulnerabilities, creating a new era of smarter, more responsive phishing scams. HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF Watch for Signs of AI-Generated Content AI-generated messages may include: • Unusual phrasing or tone shifts • Abrupt changes in writing style • Out-of-place vocabulary • Inconsistent personal details Practical Steps to Enhance Your Security • Enable multi-factor authentication on all accounts • Use a password manager to create and store strong, unique passwords • Be cautious when clicking links or downloading attachments, even from familiar sources • Verify requests for sensitive information through a separate, trusted channel STAY SAFE ONLINE By staying alert and following good online safety habits, you can help protect yourself against these tricky scams. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Trust your instincts and always double-check before sharing personal information online. Stay safe out there—and don’t let the phishers catch you!

ALL IGATOR ALERT Alligator courtship typically begins in early April, with mating occurring between May and June. Residents may notice male gators lifting their tails high and slapping the water with their jaws to create vibrations throughout the water during mating season. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) reminds residents to be cautious when having fun in and around water. The FWC recommends keeping pets away from the water. FWC's Nuisance Alligator Hotline: 866.FWC.GATOR (392-4286). They will give you a reference number that will need to be provided to staff at the Clubhouse if the alligator is in a body of water in Lake Wales or to staff at the HFC if in a body of water in Winter Haven. Alligators and crocodiles are an important part of Florida's heritage and play a valuable role in the ecosystems where they live. Remember, it is illegal to feed or harass alligators. • Always give these reptiles a respectful distance — at least 10 feet — and always leave them alone. • Alligators are nocturnal (more active at night). After dark, avoid fresh and brackish bodies of water, though alligators sometimes lurk in salt water. Unprovoked bites will often occur at the edge of the water. • Never feed alligators; it encourages them to lose their natural fear of people. • Small animals, like pets, and small children are generally more at risk than large adults. • Female alligators protect their nests by hissing and opening their mouths; this does not mean they are preparing to attack. • Alligators under four feet in length are not considered a threat to humans. MEDIA CENTER COMPUTER REMINDER Please remember that the computers in the Media Center are public computers, and residents should use caution when accessing personal or sensitive information. Because these computers are shared by many residents and guests each day, any information left open on the screen or printer can be viewed by others. Taking a few extra moments to log out and clear your information helps protect your identity and keeps the Media Center safe for everyone. These are not personal home computers, so extra care should be taken when using email, banking, or other private accounts. Helpful safety tips: • Log out of email, banking, and social media accounts • Close all browser tabs and windows before leaving • Avoid accessing sensitive financial information when possible • Never save passwords or allow the computer to remember logins • Collect printed documents immediately • Be aware of others who may see your screen PEDESTRIAN SAFETY REMINDERS With the recent Daylight Saving Time change, walkers, runners, bicyclists, and golf carts may be traveling in low-light conditions in early mornings, making visibility especially important. Drivers, please keep an eye out for pedestrians and bicyclists at all times. When walking or bicycling, especially in the early morning or at night, remember to “Be Safe and Be Seen: Make Yourself Visible to Drivers.” • Wear bright or light-colored clothing and reflective materials • Carry a flashlight • Cross in well-lit areas • Stand clear of buses, hedges, parked cars, or other obstacles before crossing • Walkers should walk facing traffic so they can see oncoming vehicles, but bicyclists should ride with traffic, as they are considered vehicles and must follow the same direction-of-travel laws All vehicles, including golf carts and bicycles, must obey all stop signs and the 20 mph speed limit throughout Lake Ashton. A person operating a golf cart on public roads or streets who is under 18 years must possess a valid learner’s permit or driver’s license. 22

LA BLACK HERITAGE CLUB HOSTS INSPIRING BLACK HISTORY MONTH PRESENTATION By Pamela June The Lake Ashton Bl ack Heritage Club welcomed residents to a casual yet deeply meaningful Black History Month presentation on February 20 that blended education, lively discussion, and heartfelt tribute. The evening highl ighted the enduring legacy of civil rights leaders and honored the countless contributions, forged in the face of adversity, that Black Americans have made to the nation’s cultural, scientific, political, and social landscape. Through storytelling, reflection, and community dialogue, attendees explored the idea that Black history is American history and that understanding this history enriches our entire community. 27

A HEARTFELT THANK YOU FROM LAPAC By Terri McDuff Lake Ashton Performing Arts Corp. (LAPAC) wishes to thank the Lake Ashton community for joining us in the 250th-year celebration of America and for attending our showcase, The Great American Journey. Your pride, energy, and applause lifted our cast and crew and made this production truly unforgettable. We are also grateful to our sponsors whose support made this show possible: RyanTheriot.com (Videographer & Photographer); Small World Tours; Sherwin-Williams; Fay Wood and Ed Maxwell; The Tessier Law Firm; Dan Murphey; and the Lake Ashton Women’s Bible Study Group. And now, as the curtains close and the stage lights dim, we’re reminded of what Mark Twain might’ve said: "every good tale knows when to tip its hat, step offstage, and promise a return. May the road rise to meet you, may the stars light your way, and if history is kind, may it remember us not for where we stood, but for how far we dared to go." Until next time. LA WALKS FOR A CURE By Pamela June Lake Ashton residents, family and friends gathered on March 10 for a Walk for a Cure, taking time to honor loved ones lost to cancer while standing in solidarity with those still fighting. The event blended elements of the American Cancer Society Relay for Life emphasizing support for cancer research. Several participants were cancer survivors themselves. At dusk the group lit luminaria bags as a quiet tribute to loved ones lost to cancer. The evening was a shared moment of compassion and remembrance, a reminder of the lives touched by a disease that has claimed far too many, and a collective expression of hope for a cure. Your generosity helps Girl Scouts make a meaningful impact in the lives of service members. LAKE ASHTON FRIENDS OF MEALS ON WHEELS By Marcia Santino This month we recognize and offer a special thank you to LA resident and friend of Meals on Wheels, Kristy McKibben. Each year Kristy and her team, in cooperation with Babe's Shoes and Apparel (Lakeland), organize a Springtime Luncheon and Fashion Show for the ladies of Lake Ashton. Net proceeds are donated to a deserving charity and this year Meals on Wheels of Polk County was selected as the recipient! This is another fine example of the wonderful, generous community we live in. Thanks to everyone striving to contribute in ways that make Lake Ashton and our greater communities of Winter Haven and Lake Wales so exceptional! Next Third Thursday Donation Drive is April 16. Pictured above L to R: New Volunteer Coordinator Trisha Price, MOW Executive Director Susan Eldridge, and Kristy McKibben On February 18, 2026, Girl Scout Troop 78110 attended the Lake Ashton Veterans Association (LAVA) meeting, where they presented certificates of appreciation to both LAVA and the Lake Ashton Veterans Association Auxiliary (LAVAA) for their support and sponsorship of the 2025 Gift of Caring cookie program. This program provides Girl Scouts with the opportunity to support the military community by sending cookies to service members serving overseas. Following the certificate presentations, LAVA, LAVAA, and individual members from both organizations generously donated $1,308 to Troop 78110 for 2026. LA COMMUNITY GARDEN By Brenda Lee The Lake Ashton Community Garden made it through the recent cold front with some damage to our crops — and many lessons for the future. All part of the wonderful world of gardening! They say a gardener’s heart is always full of hope, like the tiny mustard seed, and that certainly describes us. We have introduced Growing Garden Circles, small working groups that allow members to share their individual skills through planting, welcoming new gardeners, and developing creative ways to support the garden through fundraising. We are excited to expand these opportunities and involve more members in the continued growth of our garden community. We also held our second soapmaking class in March and plan to continue offering this fun activity for the entire Lake Ashton community. New guest speakers are also planned as the program continues to grow. The next meeting will be held April 14 at 1:30 pm. in the HFC Craft Room. Anyone interested in gardening is warmly welcome to attend. LA GETAWAYS By Judy Goldetsky Come travel with us! The March and April trips are sold out, so sign up soon for future trips. Upcoming trips for 2026/27 include local and regional bus tours, trips to national parks, Italy, a lovely trip to France, and a 2026/27 New Year's Eve Princess cruise - also open to family and friends. Bus trips are no longer facilitated by the LACDD but this registered club. MAGIC YEARS CLUB By Lynne Judd The Magic Years Club is open to all who love Disney! We meet the second Monday of every month at 7 pm in the HFC Craft Room. The next meeting is on April 13. In March we enjoyed sharing experiences at Disney, including times that we have been pixiedusted (received a surprise special treat from a cast member or another guest), how lightning lane works and possible ways to reduce the cost of it, and apps that might help to find that elusive dining reservation at WDW. We also had a pop quiz on food consumption at WDW (did you know that approximately 9.5 million hamburgers are consumed there each year?) and our monthly trivia quiz, with some questions contributed by members. Our members are looking forward to a viewing of The Emperor's New Groove in the Clubhouse Cinema on Saturday, April 18 at 6:30 pm, and to having lunch at Chef Art Smith's Homecoming Restaurant in Disney Springs on April 27. Come join us for the April meeting. You'll have fun! LA CERAMIC CHICS By Shari Gleber With ceramics, you don’t have to be an “artist” to create beautiful pieces. Kate will share recent Polk County School Board accomplishments, and where she believes future emphasis should be made. Visitors are welcome. Gathering/socializing in the Clubhouse Ballroom begins at 3:30 pm, and the meeting starts at 4. ONE COMMUNITY CLUB By Michael Lee The second of several town hall type community meetings was held on March 10 that was well attended by neighbors interested in hearing about the possible savings that can be realized after a merger. The One Community Team presented a range of estimated savings in the top ten expense areas for the current CDDS. At the request of our neighbors 32 that are still currently working, the next town hall type community meeting is 6 pm on Tuesday, April 14 at the HFC Community Room. Come and learn more about the process, feasibility and potential impact of merging the CDDs and truly creating One Community. The One Community Team can be contacted at OneCommunityOneCDD@gmail.com. One Community Club is a Lake Ashton registered club and not endorsed by LACDD OR LAIICDD. GENEALOGY CLUB By Jane Imparl We will be meeting Wednesday, April 8 at 2 pm in the HFC Craft Room. Come and meet your neighbors who are interested in researching their family trees. For the last few months, we have been taking a deep dive into the free genealogy research website, Family Search. In addition, we have also looked at how AI can make our research easier and more effective. We have been delving into how we can make our research “prompts” better so that we can be more productive. Come join this fine group. Any questions, call Jane at 815-545-6655. LA BLACK HERITAGE CLUB By Charles Roland On April 15, 1947, Jackie Robinson stepped onto Ebbets Field and shattered Major League Baseball’s color barrier, forever changing the landscape of American sports and civil rights. His courage under relentless pressure showed the nation that excellence can be a force for systemic change. Robinson’s legacy reminds us that progress often begins with one person willing to stand firm in the face of injustice. We also pay tribute to Rev. Jesse Jackson, whose words fortified generations during the long march toward equality. When the struggle felt heavy, he urged us to “Keep hope alive.” His powerful affirmation—“I am somebody”—continues to uplift those who have been marginalized or overlooked, insisting that dignity is not negotiable. Their messages still resonate today. Robinson’s quiet strength and Jackson’s unwavering hope challenge us to not only believe in a more humane and inclusive country, but to speak up, stand tall and help build it.

LAMGA By David Kubissa The annual LAMGA Member-Guest Tournament has an enduring thread of family ties running through the event since it began in 2006. This year’s tourney – celebrating its 20th anniversary -- was no exception. By my count, 20 of the 60 teams were composed of players with family connections to one another. Father and son, grandfather and grandson, brothers, and brothers-in-law, to name a few. They came together to reunite over three days of golf from March 5-7. Many of the teams displayed their family pride with matching shirts, and frequently a different design for each day. The final scoreboard showed that the family teams weren’t just about appearances. They brought game: 13 of them finished among the top three in their flights (see the full list of winners on the LAMGA page at lakeashtonliving.com.) Of course, none of this would have been possible without dedicated sponsorship from all corners of the Polk County community. The 71 sponsors who put up money to help celebrate the 20th anniversary tournament included a wide range of businesses and professional services. The LAMGA board is grateful for this support and encourages the Lake Ashton community to consider these sponsors when seeking their products or services. A tribute to those sponsors will appear each month in this article through December, starting with today’s list of major sponsors. The full list can be found on the LAMGA page at lakeashtonliving.com. Major sponsors salute: Ryan Bates / Bates Capital; Chris Bruser, Mutual of Omaha; Amerity Financial / Burris Warner; J.R. Golf Carts; Red Hoagland Hyundai; Snowbird Heating & Cooling; Enriquez Lawn & Landscaping; Weikert Ford; Mahalak Auto Group; Art’s Golf Carts. Pictured: Tournament players line up 100 yards from No. 18 West for a shootout at closest to the pin. MESSAGE FROM THE PRO SHOP By Kevin Baker, General Manager The Golf Team would like to thank all 73 participants who competed in the 2026 Lake Ashton Club Championship, the final and most prestigious championship event of the season. The Men’s and Ladies divisions both showcased outstanding competition and sportsmanship throughout the two-day tournament. Day one presented challenging windy conditions that kept the leaderboard tight and exciting, including a three-way tie for first place in the Men’s Division heading into the final round. On day two, players rose to the occasion with impressive performances, highlighted by Robert Whittington’s outstanding final-round score of 73 to secure the Men’s Club Championship title. In the Ladies Division, Lisa Kennedy delivered a strong opening round that positioned her well for the final day. She followed it up with another solid performance to capture the Ladies Club Championship and complete an excellent tournament weekend. They both are pictured below. Events like the Club Championship reflect the strong spirit of competition and camaraderie that make Lake Ashton Golf Club such a special place to play. Thank you again to everyone who participated, supported the event, and helped make the championship a success. We look forward to seeing you at many more exciting tournaments and club events in the months ahead!
