RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT By Marianne Zak Lake Ashton commemorates April as "Autism Acceptance Month" which was retitled in April of 2011. It was formerly called "Autism Awareness Month" which began in 1970. According to the CDC's ADD Network, 1 in 31 born in 2014 are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. The symptoms vary widely among individuals. It occurs in all races, ethnic and socioeconomic groups. It is three times more common in boys than girls. This month read the "Resident Spotlight" which features a resident who is on the autism spectrum. Meet Garrett Minster, a resident living on Hogan Lane, formerly from Missouri and Kansas. Garrett was home schooled throughout his childhood up through high school. He completed his Associate’s Degree in Graphic Design at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas. He then enrolled in Fort Hays State University in Kansas. After moving to Lake Ashton, he completed his degree at Fort Hays online. Garrett earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Web Design in July of 2025.
