LACDD NEWS By Christine Wells, LA (LW) CDD Community Director (cwells@lakeashtoncdd.com) Welcome back to those that were traveling over the summer. Fall is in full swing in Lake Ashton with pumpkins and brightly colored leaves displayed throughout the Clubhouse and activity calendars bulging with fun! Please complete a form if you notice something in need of repair and submit feedback concerning your experiences at the Clubhouse. Staff is here for you...to make your events go off without a hitch, to help advertise and promote your group activities, and to ensure you live your best retirement life. With the return of summer travelers traffic counts will begin to increase in Lake Ashton. With that being said please be sure to take your time when maneuvering throughout the community. Be sure to wear reflective clothing when walking or biking during hours when light is limited and always walk facing traffic. Please see pages 18-19 for more information on how to keep our streets and residents safe. Please remember storm season runs until November 30. All residents should be prepared for severe weather. Helpful storm preparation resources can be found at either Activities Desk. On September 15 Supervisors met to attend to board matters. They approved an aquatic plant agreement with Applied Aquatic to maintain the ponds in the Lake Wales portion of Lake Ashton. Solitude was chosen to maintain the wetlands and conservation areas. A quote was approved to do some minor striping work on the East parking lot to add an additional handicap spot. A wrap up report was sent out with additional actions taken at the meeting. RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT By Marianne Zak Marsha Bishop of Pebble Beach Blvd. hails from Maine and New Brunswick, Canada. Marsha and her husband David moved to Lake Ashton in 2019 and declared, "no more snow"! Having raised three children, Christopher, Benjamin and Emily, the Bishops will celebrate forty years of marriage next June. Since October is "Breast Cancer Awareness Month", she is commemorating the 10th and 12th anniversaries of her two sisters' recovery from breast cancer! She said, "there is hope with medicine so your life can be longer". Believing in hope helped Marsha October 25, 2023. While on a transatlantic cruise, her daughter Emily was frantically trying to reach her parents with horrific news. When they finally connected, Emily blurted out, "Mom, Benjamin has been shot but he is alive". Having one more day before docking in Lisbon, Marcia relied on CNN for the latest developments. Not only was her son shot five times, it was the largest mass murder in Maine's history. Arriving stateside, friends drove them to the hospital, where Benjamin was intubated. Marsha discovered that a mentally deranged man had shot and killed seven people in a bowling alley. Then he drove to a recreation center where Benjamin was participating in a corn hole tournament. There the shooter killed eleven and injured thirteen others within 78 seconds. Marsha's son lost complete use of his arm and hand but is back to work while still recovering. 14 Marsha and David are looking forward to Benjamin's wedding on October 25th, the second anniversary of the shootings. Marsha said, "they are going to take the worst day of their life and make it the best day of their life"! After her son's wedding, although hesitant to go into large crowds and being very aware of her surroundings, Marsha and David are going on a European cruise. Marsha, a woman of faith, enjoys Lake Ashton dances, travel, movies, cards and Stella, their golden doodle. Marsha's spirit radiates hope and forgiveness! MOAA CHAPTER LUNCHEON By Cal Posner If you reside in Lake Ashton and have ever served your country as a commissioned officer or warrant officer in any branch of our armed services, NOAA or the Commissioned Officer Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service you and your spouse are invited to lunch at the Eagles Nest October 24 at 11:30 am. This event is sponsored by the Imperial Polk County Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA). Many LA residents are already national MOAA members and they are also invited. Guests can dine on menu items or the famous Sandra & Jackie Sandwich Board. MOAA is a 360,000 member organization that is the primary advocate for currently serving, veteran and retired officers. Its mission is to serve all ranks to maintain and enhance their earned benefits. Local chapters support ROTC/JROTC activities, national holidays, and local military-related charities and projects like Flight to Honor. They also provide information to local and state lawmakers about military related topics. There is also a social side to its chapters with monthly lunches or dinners and celebrations of patriotic holidays like Veterans Day and Memorial Day. To secure your seat at the Luncheon please RSVP to calposner@aol.com or Tip Franklin, lotus7t@yahoo.com, before October 20.
L.A. LOOKS Wildlife Corner Photo & Article By Barbara Ann Comer The great egret is the largest white egret in Florida. These usually solitary birds can be found at any body of water hunting for fish, the mainstay of their diet. Lake Ashton residents may be surprised to have a living lawn ornament as Great Egrets also hunt in landscaped yards for lizards and other delicacies. They are dwarfed in size only by the ubiquitous Great Blue Heron. These large white members of the heron family have a heavy yellow bill and black legs and feet. Breeding adults sport long lacy plumes on the back and vivid lime-green lores (the skin between the eye and the bill). These lovely plumes nearly led to the Great Egret's demise as they were fashionable on women's hats in the late 1800s. Once the birds were protected, they made a good comeback and became the symbol of the National Audubon Society. REMINDER TO ALL RESIDENTS Residents should be mindful of their property boundaries and not conduct work of any kind outside of those property boundaries. This includes, but is not limited to, installation of landscaping, drains, and pipes in addition to maintenance work on pond banks, common areas, or conservation/ wetland areas. Contact LA (LW) CDD Community Director Christine Wells (cwells@lakeashtoncdd.com) or LA II (WH) CDD Community Director Karen Van Kirk (kvankirk@lakeashton2cdd.com) to report any concerns regarding pond erosion, areas in need of maintenance, or a possible encroachment. 16 ADOPT-A -ROAD CLEANUP By Linda Sandel A Lake Ashton quarterly litter clean-up event is scheduled for October 23 to pick up trash along Thompson Nursery Road. Meet in the Clubhouse Ballroom at 8:30 am to pick up trash bags, gloves, safety vests and trash grabbers. Volunteers receive a free t-shirt and Bok Tower ticket each calendar year. Sign-up at https://lakeashtonliving.com/ adopt-a-road-cleanup or RSVP to Linda Sandel at 863-368-0699 or Sandelly7@gmail.com. Thank you for helping to keep our community beautiful! LA ( LW) HOA CORNER Welcome, returning snowbirds! If you haven’t yet signed up for an account with Stambaugh, please do so at your earliest convenience. The HOA member portal is lakeashtonhoa.org where you can register for your account. ARC members are available the third Wednesday of the month (October 15) in the Clubhouse Card Room at 3:30 pm. If you have questions for ARC or need assistance with requests, several committee members will be available to help. This is becoming a popular event! In October, Compliance will focus on driveways and mailboxes (including posts). Weeds and stains in driveways can become worse during the summer months with the moisture from the “rainy” season and the heat. A local resident does repairs on mailboxes - she can be found at (616) 648-9890 and has very reviews. The Board of Directors is still in need of a volunteer for an open Director position. SAFETY NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH (NW) CORNER By Fay Wood, NW Chief This month’s article is going to discuss traffic safety and concerns your Neighborhood Watch Team has. Unfortunately, there was a recent accident involving a golf cart which resulted in property damage and injury to the driver. This was not reported to the appropriate law enforcement agencies as required by Florida statutes with vehicle accidents involving injuries. In this case a police officer or Sheriff’s deputy would have responded to make sure all aspects were taken care. In instances such as this, when in doubt call 911 for the appropriate response. Golf carts are considered motor vehicles under Florida statures. The same restrictions and requirements go along with operating them. Another area of concern regards the complete, yes complete, stopping at a stop sign. As was previously noted, that means golf carts and bicycles as well. When you come to a stop sign, stop at the designated while line, check all directions and then proceed. The Lake Ashton speed limit is twenty miles per hour, and we strongly recommend you adhere to it! Since most of us in Lake Ashton are retired, there is no valid excuse for speeding which not only puts you but your neighbors at risk as well. We have asked our two police agencies for increased emphasis on this, so if you are caught, it is your own fault. As our streets are narrower than many city streets, proper parking is essential for effective traffic flow and safety. Residents should only park in the direction of traffic flow. We have had numerous complaints regarding this issue, and we ask all of you to remind your landscaping contractors of this fact or risk being cited by law enforcement. Lastly, please do not drink and drive! As we said before, golf carts are also subject to this law and if caught or God forbid being involved in an accident the same sanctions pertain as cars. The penalties for Driving While Impaired are quite severe and criminal in nature and could have life changing effects. These are just of few of the concerns we have gotten and in future articles we will highlight other traffic safety topics. As always, on behalf of your Neighborhood Watch Team, we wish you a safe October! PARKING & ROAD SAFETY Residents are reminded that the speed limit throughout all of Lake Ashton is 20 mph and all golf carts, vehicles, and bicycles (including electric bicycles) should make a complete stop just before the white stop bar whether before or after the posted stop sign. It only takes a moment to follow the traffic controls that are in place that could potentially prevent a serious accident. The Lake Wales and Winter Haven Police Department patrol in Lake Ashton on a regular basis. Please take a little extra time to ensure you (continued) 18

maneuver throughout the community as safely as possible to avoid a ticket and more importantly, an accident. The following excerpt was taken from Florida State Statute 316.1945 Stopping, standing, or parking prohibited in specified places. For the full statue, scan this QR code. Residents who attend exercise classes in the month of October are encouraged to wear pink clothing for a chance to win a gift certificate. PINK RIBBON DANCE & GOLF TOURNAMENT By Lydia Fichtman This year’s golf tournament is November 6 and 8, sponsored by Lake Ashton Golf Management. All funds raised will be donated to the Breast Cancer Foundation of Central Florida. The mission of this 501(c)(3) is to ease financial worries of local Central Florida breast cancer patients and their families. While a patient is in active treatment the foundation’s financial assistance program helps patients with non-medical financial expenses such as rent, mortgage payments, utility bills, car repairs, car payments, gas for treatment travel, and/or daycare costs. In addition, there is a children’s fund that provides financial compensation for each child in the household upon initial application approval and during the holidays. The pictured golfer is located in the Clubhouse. Attached to a golf ball is a QR Code. If you would like to make a donation, register a non-golf club member for the tournament, or become a Sponsor, scan the QR Code above or on the golfer statue. Think about making a donation for a loved one. Each of us knows someone who has had this disease. A special kick-off party will be held at 4 pm on November 6 at the Eagles Nest and on the West 18th Hole. There will be a putting contest and a closest to the string contest for a small fee. Prizes will be available for both, and munchies. November 8 is the Pink Ribbon Golf Tournament. In 2024, Lake Ashton donated just over $59,000 to the Foundation through sponsors, donations, silent auctions and registrations. Lake Ashton would like to meet or exceed that goal this year. Sign up at the Pro Shop as a foursome, a pair or an individual. The Member fee is $45 and the Non-Member fee is $75 which includes a continental breakfast, a round of golf, lunch (again provided by Glory Days) and a donation to BCFCF. Registration closes on November 1. Sponsorships are available from $50$1000. Interested sponsors can download a form from the Lake Ashton Living website. Remember my #1 rule: HAVE FUN!” LA SWIM CLUB By Sandy White Can you imagine a bunch of men and women, 50 years and older, getting together for a swim meet? Well, the National Senior Games program has been doing that since 1970. There are local, regional, statewide, and national competitions. Our 6-year-old LA Swim Club has had swimmers at all those levels. Most club members got involved in LASC for fitness, but some heard about the fun swim meets and used the competition as motivation to keep up their fitness activity. The swim meets our club has enjoyed most are in Sanford, FL (which will be held November 2) and Polk Co. (which will be held March 7-8, 2026 at the Rowdy Gaines pool in Winter Haven). Several swimmers had never competed and were nervous to try, but they found these events to be very enjoyable. Anyone who can swim two or more lengths is welcome to attend any of our reserved pool times Mondays and Wednesdays from 1 to 2 pm and Saturdays 10 to 11 am. Some do their own workouts and others follow the club's written workouts. Coach Sandy White offers tips that match your goals (i.e., fitness, technique, efficiency, speed, endurance). For more information, email sandyw1994@aol.com or come see us at the pool. FRIENDLY BOCCE GROUP By Stephanie Iszak All Lake Ashton residents are invited to come out on Mondays and Fridays from 10 am to 1 pm to play some fun games of Bocce Ball. No experience is required. LA SINGLES CLUB By Carol Corley Lake Ashton’s Singles Club had a very interesting September meeting, learning about all the potential activities in which we could participate, like the Christmas Dinner Dance at the Clubhouse, and LA Getaways, a travel club which promises interesting trips to near and far places. (continued from p. 32) Dinosaur World, Ringling Museum, Lakeland Air Museum, and many more. The club meets the first Sunday of every month at 2 pm at the Clubhouse Ballroom, followed by cards for those interested. On weeks when there is no meeting, the group gets together at 2 pm. for cards, same location. Also, the third Thursday of every month at the Pavilion at 4 pm, we gather to visit and have a drink and share snacks. The club again is starting to think of adopting for Christmas a few senior orphans (elderly residents in Polk County who have an extremely low income and no family to help). LAKE ASHTON FRIENDS OF MEALS ON WHEELS By Marcia Santino It is Fundraising Season, the time of year when worthy nonprofit organizations like Meals on Wheels of Polk County are appealing to the public for donations in support of their Service to the Community. Aligned with this initiative, Lake Ashton Friends of Meals on Wheels is once again sponsoring a month-long gift card/gift basket raffle fundraiser with proceeds benefitting MOWPolk. This year we are excited to announce Sheriff Grady Judd will be helping us kick off our campaign on Monday, October 13 in the Clubhouse Ballroom, 11-2 PM. Please see our advertisement in the Events section for complete details. Also tucked in this publication is a 2-sided flyer providing the entire list of generous raffle donors and the 52+ items being offered this year, including a “$10 Golden Ticket” item custom designed, handcrafted and donated by LA’s own George Powell. This Heirloom Quality Wooden Rocking Horse will be on display along with all other basket items during the kickoff event. Our Grand Finale to close the monthlong fundraiser will once again be a World Kindness Day Dance on Thursday, November 13 at the Clubhouse Ballroom from 7-10 pm featuring the music of 99 in the Shade. Tickets are on sale now, please see our advertisement in the Events section 34 for complete details. You will also be able to purchase tickets to the dance at the kickoff. If you are in need of services, interested in volunteering or would like to make a monetary charitable donation to MOWPolk, please call: 863-299-1616. LAVA AUXILIARY By Chris Graves The next LAVA Meeting will be October 15 at 6:30 pm in the Cinema. This is an exciting and important meeting. We will be finalizing the details for the upcoming Craft Fair on Saturday, October 25 from 9 am to 2 pm. It is SOLD OUT! Consider this is a call for volunteers to help throughout the day. CALL FOR BAKERS: Bakers! Bakers! Best way to have no calories when baking cookies, cakes and pies is to DONATE THEM to the Craft Fair! Last year the Baked Goods raised $1000 and our goal is to match that number. With your help we can do it! See you at the Craft Fair! God Bless America!
LA COMMUNITY GARDEN By Lynn Davis and Karen McLemore The Lake Ashton Community Garden is thriving, and this season’s harvest is a true testament to the hard work of our members. Sweet potato leaves are ready for picking, while vibrant turmeric, glossy eggplant, hearty luffa (yes, the kind that becomes a natural sponge!), and the uniquely tangy Thai Roselle are all flourishing in the garden beds. Visitors will notice a new touch of organization too—each bed and plant is now clearly labeled, making it easier than ever to learn about what’s growing. Looking ahead, our gardeners are already preparing for Florida’s fall planting season, with members sharing ideas at the September meeting on what to grow next. And don’t miss a special highlight: Josh from Cody Cove will be joining us for a special presentation tentatively on a Friday in October (date to be determined). With growth, learning, and community at its heart, the garden is a place to celebrate every season. GARDEN CLUB By Pam Klawinski “Gene, The Barefoot Gardener” shared his knowledge with the Lake Ashton Garden Club last month on getting our gardens ready for Autumn. We had a wonderful Q&A session with him. Gene brought some free daffodil bulbs, plumeria seeds and seedlings to share with us along with several plants that were distributed for a small donation. The October meeting will be held Wednesday, October 8 in the Pavilion at 10 am. This month’s meeting will feature a presentation on planting herbs and edible plants. Please join us to gather some information and also to share your tips. Membership not required and no green thumb necessary. 35 LA DEMOCRATIC CLUB By Howard Mayne The Lake Ashton Democratic Club will hold their next monthly meeting Thursday October 2, in the HFC Community Center at 6:30 pm with social time at 6:00 pm. Here is how the agenda is shaping up month by month: October: The LAMGA Red Hoagland Cup event will be Oct. 15 and 16 – a Wednesday and Thursday – with lunch on the second day. Cost is $20 per player to defray costs, including prizes. On Oct. 28 and 29, the joint LAMGA / LALGA event, known as Shirts and Skirts, will take place. The cost of $25 per player covers lunch on the second day and prize payouts. November: Annual board elections take place with three of the six board seats at stake. Nomination forms will go out in early November. December: The annual LAMGA meeting and lunch will be December 3 after that day’s weekly LAMGA game. All LAMGA members in good standing are invited. UPD A TES FROM THE PRO SHOP In addition, the Eagles Nest team is working on refreshing both our menu and drink selections. Residents can look forward to creative new offerings, weekly Nest Platters, and rotating hot sandwich specials designed to keep things fresh and flavorful. By Kevin Baker, General Manager Thank you to everyone who joined us for the recent Town Hall meetings at the Eagles Nest. Over 120 residents attended the two sessions, and we truly appreciate the thoughtful dialogue and valuable feedback you provided. Your voices matter, and we’re excited to share some of the updates inspired by your input. One of the most common requests was to host more evening events, and we’re thrilled to announce that a new activity calendar will be released this October. These programs will bring more opportunities for neighbors to gather, connect, and enjoy the vibrant community spirit that makes Lake Ashton so special. A special thank-you goes out to everyone supporting the NFL Sunday Ticket experience at the Nest. It’s been wonderful to see so many fans come together each week to cheer on their teams in a fun and welcoming environment. As we approach the busier season, we kindly remind residents to make reservations in advance whenever possible. This helps our staff prepare and ensures that your visit is as enjoyable as it can be. Most importantly, we want the Eagles Nest to reflect the tastes and preferences of our Lake Ashton community. Please continue sharing your ideas and suggestions with us—we’re always eager to hear how we can better serve you. We look forward to seeing you soon at the Eagles Nest for great food, good company, and memorable experiences. !"#$%#$& '()*#+(, -.()(/ ! #$%&'$()&*+ ,-)$.&/. ! #$%&'$()&*+ 0()$.&/. ! 1/22$.3&*+ ,-)$.&/. ! 1/22$.3&*+ 0()$.&/. !"## %&'()*'#& %%%0",'(-./"&,-/&.01"2 0($*() 2"345) !"#$%&'( )'&*'(+",'(-./"&,-/&.01"2 34567 9:;#5<=: 67,%#$ 2"345) !"#$%&'( >?@./&+",'(-./"&,-/&.01"2 39<=7 =4A#99:< Veteran Owned & Operated Family Owned
