Instead of telling your story like you’re still in it, tell how you got through it and grew from it. Your testimony is a public recounting of your experience that can transform another’s life. I serve with Youth for Christ at the juvenile detention center on the weekends (ages 15 years and under). When a child opens up to me I make it a point to flip the script! Help them turn their situation from destructive to productive, point out the opportunity to break those chains and start fresh. There is always a next chapter in life, another season. My hope for us is that we love on others, choose joy, seek peace, be patient, show kindness, repay wrongs with good, remain faithful, be gentle with others, and have self-control. These are the ingredients to a happy ending. - Alex Fuertes, Maintenance Supervisor CLUBHOUSE AND HFC OFFICE HOURS DURING RFID/AMENITY ACCESS DISTRIBUTION

SECURITY TRANSITION UPDATE Distribution is taking place at the Clubhouse (Lake Wales Residents) and the Health and Fitness Center (Winter Haven Residents). Take a look at the insert for the schedule for more information on scheduling. A big thank you to all of the volunteers assisting staff with distribution at both locations. This process would not be as smooth without your help! Residents are reminded that each household receives up to two (2) RFID tags and Amenity Access Cards per household but not more than one (1) per resident. Additional RFID tags and Amenity Access Cards can be purchased for $10 each once residency is verified. There have been several questions about how RVs will be handled. RV owners are encouraged to work with staff to coordinate RFID tag distribution with when you are going on your next trip. RV owners that live in Lake Wales will go to the Clubhouse. RV owners that live in Winter Haven will go to the Health and Fitness Center (HFC). The week of October 29-31 is dedicated to credential distribution for RV owners that live in Lake Wales. If this time is not convenient for you please contact staff to set up alternative accommodations. The gate clicker system will be in place through the end of the year to allow all residents an opportunity to come in and register for their RFID tags. We are here to make this transition as seamless as possible for all residents so please let us know how we can help. Thank you to the many residents that have helped make this a positive transition so far. We appreciate the smiling faces and jokes along the way. It helps to have a positive attitude when tackling change and this is a change for Supervisors, staff, and residents. Contact Christine at cwells@lakeashtoncdd.com for Lake Wales residents and Karen VanKirk at maintenance@lakeashtoncdd.com for Winter Haven residents with any questions. WELCOME TO LA! New residents of Lake Ashton can sign up at either Activities Desk or online for New Resident Orientation November 1 in the HFC Community Center at 2 pm. New residents can also stop by the 8 Clubhouse or HFC during operating hours to receive a welcome packet, sign up for community-wide emails, and more. HOW TO SAVE A L I FE Clubhouse Staff went through CPR/AED training in July and all are now certified for 2 years. There is an AED located in the main hallway of the Clubhouse, near the restrooms, and also on the roving golf cart. Over 20 residents attended the CCC/AED class offered by Polk County Fire Rescue in September. If you missed this one, don't worry — residents will have another opportunity to attend a class in February 2025. GENERAL ELECTION NOVEMBER 5 The General Election will be held on Tuesday, November 5 and all Polk County registered voters who live in Lake Ashton will vote in the Clubhouse Ballroom from 7 am – 7 pm. Please note there will be no movie showings on this day. In addition to the presidential candidates and various amendments, Lake Ashton residents living in Lake Wales will be voting to fill one seat for election on the LACDD Board of Supervisors. Lake Ashton residents living in Winter Haven will be voting to fill one seat up for election on the LAIICDD Board of Supervisors. The voter registration deadline is October 7 and the deadline to request an absentee ballot is October 24. To find out who the candidates are that are running for election, visit the Polk County Supervisor of Elections website at polkelections.com. Any questions regarding the General Election should be directed to the Polk County Supervisor of Elections at 863.534.5888.

JOINT AMENI TY POL ICY HIGHLIGHT Each month an excerpt from the adopted Joint Amenities Policy will be featured in the LA Times. The full policy can be found online at lakeashtoncdd.com or lakeashton2cdd.com un der "Additional District Documents”. Please reach out to Christine Wells, LA (LW) CDD Community Director (cwells@lakeashtoncdd.com) or Karen Van Kirk, LA II (WH) CDD Community Director (maintenance@lakeashton2cdd.com) with any questions. VII. RESERVING FACILITIES Amenity Facilities are available on a “first come, first served basis”, and subject to applicable fees or rates as set by the appropriate District. Requests to reserve facilities should be submitted through the Staff at the appropriate Amenity Facility. With the exception of designated Open Play (as defined in Section X – Amenity Policies – General Usage), reservations may be available for up to two (2) hour increments for all facilities listed in this policy, with the exception of the Clubhouse Ballroom and HFC Community Center. These can be reserved for periods up to four (4) hours. Longer time increments may be approved by the Amenity Manager. Amenities that have not been reserved are available for use on a “first come, first served” basis. There are no personal standing weekly reservations allowed for the Amenity Facilities listed in the reservation policies. Lake Ashton activities taking place within the Amenity Facilities should be open to all Lake Ashton residents and not be labeled as “private”. If the room is not reserved by a club, group or organization, tables may be individual ly reserved, wi th the understanding that the Amenity Manager may move or cancel reservations, if required, up to 48 hours prior to the reservation time. Clubs, Groups, and Organizations may make “standing” reservations. These will be reviewed semi-annually by the Amenity Manager. (Refer to section IX on what constitutes a club.) If a standing reservation made by a registered Club, Group, or Organization is cancelled or unused more than three (3) times in a six (6)month period then the reservation may be revoked by the Amenity Manager. This does not apply to a Club, Group, or Organization going on a planned hiatus previously arranged with Staff. Reservations for commercial or profitmaking purposes will be charged a fee in accordance with LA CDD and LAII CDD Chapter III: Rules for Amenities Rates, (respectively). The Amenity Manager can reschedule any reservation if requested by the District. The Clubhouse or HFC must be notified if a scheduled reservation cannot be kept so the slot may be re-assigned. Reservations will be held for fifteen (15) minutes past the scheduled start time, after which the Amenity Manager may re-assign the reservation. 10

LACDD NEWS By Christine Wells, LA (LW) CDD Community Director Welcome back to all residents returning from summer vacation! It is great to see everyone eager to take part in entertainment shows, fitness classes, club meetings, movies, games, and more. Be on the lookout for the insert in this issue announcing the 2025 Entertainment Series. There are excellent shows and events planned for the remainder of this year and the beginning of next year! October is breast cancer awareness month. Please look for the events and activities in this edition of the LA Times meant to support and honor fighters, survivors, and caregivers. This is a time to be educated, encourage awareness about testing and early detection, and celebrate survivors! With the increase in returning residents, extra caution is needed on the roads. As always, because Lake Ashton has narrow roads shared by pedestrians, golf carts, vehicles, landscaping vehicles, delivery trucks, and bicycles, it is extremely important to observe the posted 20 MPH speed limit and always obey all stop signs when traveling by bike, golf cart or vehicle. Also, be sure to wear reflective clothing when walking or biking during hours when light is limited and always walk facing traffic. On September 23 Supervisors met to discuss board matters. Supervisors heard the status of current projects, options available to advertise the Restaurant being open to the public with signage at the main entrance and more. A wrap up report was sent via email on September 26. Three quotes were presented to Supervisors to install permanent roofline lighting at the Clubhouse and Guard House. This will replace the current system that was only installed during the holidays. Residents will begin to see a savings of $3500 per year around year 5 with this lighting system. These new lights will enhance the safety and security of the buildings and will serve the community throughout the year versus just one month during the holidays. Discussion regarding safety on the roads within Lake Ashton was also discussed with an emphasis on street parking. Residents can help by encouraging vendors to park close to the curb and avoid parking on curves and always park with the flow of traffic. Security will continue to inform vendors of proper parking practices and will also work with LWPD to have them enforce when needed. Residents should call Security (phone numbers are on page 3) to report any potential parking issues. Residents are encouraged to reach out to Supervisors for more information regarding the topics that are being discussed or topics that YOU want to have addressed. Transparency is very important to Supervisors and Staff. We want you to be involved and know all the details we know. Supervisors spend countless hours prepping for meetings and there is no way all the information that is known can be disseminated during the meeting. We invite you to call or stop by to learn more and ask any questions you have. I promise you an answer will be given. Supervisors and Staff are always open to share and show residents how your money is being spent and what we are doing to save money every step along the way. The first step starts with you asking a question. We look forward to seeing more residents involved in the community and attending meetings. The October LACDD Board of Supervisors meeting and Joint CDD meetings were canceled. The next meeting will be November 18 at 9 am in the Clubhouse Ballroom. The Health & Fitness Center continues its tradition of bringing awareness to breast cancer throughout the month of October. To begin with, we encourage LA residents who attend exercise classes in the month of October to wear pink clothing to all exercise classes, and a chance to win a gift certificate. The HFC’s annual breast cancer awareness walk is also taking place on October 4, beginning at 9 am, with a short walk route and a longer walk route. The HFC will award medals to the first three finishers in each category. There is also a pancake and sausage breakfast for participants of the walk. Residents who wish to make donations, can drop off (checks only) made payable to Breast Cancer Foundation of Central Florida throughout the month. The HFC also features a Wall of Honor where names of those persons affected by breast cancer can be displayed behind the HFC’s activity desk throughout the month. LA residents simply need to let HFC personnel know of name(s) of those persons they would like to honor. Lake Ashton’s Pink Ladies are also sponsoring the “Let’s Party in Pink” dance at the HFC on October 13, benefiting breast cancer through the Breast Cancer Foundation of Central Florida. October normally ushers in cooler temperatures, early snowbird arrivals, and the beginning of the holiday season. The HFC’s Halloween dance will take place on October 18, with music by the Free Whiskey Band. Costumes are optional but we all know what fun it is to guess who is behind that mask, and there will be prizes awarded for the three best costumes worn. All-in-all, October will be a busy month, with the Women’s Bible Study Group beginning on October 2, a Spanish language learning class every Tuesday, and a Personal-Self-Protection class, slated for Tuesday, October 8, by LA resident Rachel Kane, who is a retired USA Judo Coach and taught Judo and Kenpo martial arts for 30+ years; however, Ms. Kane is not currently a certified instructor. Zumba Gold is back with Monica on Wednesdays, and every Friday has Clinton’s Boot Camp offering a fun way to exercise and keep fit. Be sure to mark your calendar for the LAIICDD meeting, taking place October 17, beginning at 8:00 am. The RFID implementation is continuing throughout October, with residents notified by email as to what date they are to report to receive their RFID decal. If you have not registered on-line you may pick up your registration form at the HFC or Clubhouse and are to bring the completed registration form with you. Emails have been sent out identifying which street addresses are being scheduled as well as for a make-up date. November’s HFC highlights include a Thanksgiving potluck, like in years’ past, with turkey and all the trimmings. Be on the lookout for details via email. Christmas is not far behind, with HFC’s Holiday party scheduled for December 6th. 14

L.A. LOOKS Central LA (LW) HOA CORNER By Dee Mayne, Compliance Director For this month's article we would like to address some things you can do to help keep the curb appeal in our community as well as offer some helpful things you can do to stay compliant. The Lake Wales HOA will be checking homeowners’ properties in October for signs that are visible from streets and cart paths. The only signs allowed in the CC&Rs are home security signs. Please ensure any flags you are flying are allowed and are flown appropriately as required by both State and Federal statutes and our governing documents. As snowbirds start their way back, this is a good time to check for weeds (they love summer here!) and refresh mulch beds as needed. Please remember to bring trash and recycle bins in after they have been emptied. If you do leave them outdoors they must be screened and not visible. Last but not least, are you planning some renovations or updates? Please remember, an ARC request is required for many things you may want to do on the exterior of your property. Not sure when an ARC request is needed? Please visit the ARC Tracker at arctracker.com/la or our website at lakeashtonhoa.com for copies of the guidelines. It can grow to 3-4 feet in height and 2-3 feet in width. The grass grows in clumps and its flower stalks bring a beautiful pink or purple airy look to any landscape. The stalks begin turning pink or purple as early as August and lasting until December. It gives Florida its own Fall color. The grass can be cut back in December, but waiting until Spring brings a winter interest. It’s best though to divide the grass every 2 to 3years if you have limited space. Muhly grass is often planted near fences or in borders for better show. Here’s a super easy plant to grow. Once established, it is drought tolerant, takes heat, and is forgiving to poor soils. This plant is just about maintenance free. Though it likes sun, it tolerates shade too. There is another variety called “White Cloud” if pink isn’t for you. Take a ride around LA Pavilion for a closer look. The Lake Ashton Garden Club planted some about two years ago. You’ll be able to tell if this plant is right for you. SAFETY COMMUNITY SAFETY AND THE BENEFITS OF NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH (NW) PROGRAMS By Fay Wood, NW Chief In today's ever-changing world, fostering a sense of security within our neighborhoods has become paramount. Amidst the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it is easy to overlook the importance of knowing and trusting our neighbors. However, establishing a Neighborhood Watch program can bring about a myriad of benefits that not only enhance safety but also cultivate a stronger sense of community spirit. What is a Neighborhood Watch Program? At its core, a Neighborhood Watch program is a collaborative effort among all residents to observe and report suspicious activities in their community. These programs typically organize important yearly meetings with law enforcement and others to address safety and other important concerns. Neighborhood Watch programs empower residents to actively participate in safeguarding their surroundings and supporting those groups who also support total community efforts. Through key meetings and gatherings, residents have the opportunity to get to know one another better, building trust and fostering a sense of solidarity. This heightened sense of community not only deters criminal activity but also creates a support network where neighbors can rely on each other in times of need. Heightened Awareness and Vigilance By actively participating in a Neighborhood Watch program, residents become more attuned to their surroundings. They learn to recognize suspicious behavior, unfamiliar vehicles, or unusual activities, enabling them to promptly report any potential threats to local authorities. This heightened awareness serves as a powerful deterrent to criminals, as they are less likely to target neighborhoods where vigilant residents are actively monitoring their surroundings. Rapid Response to Emergencies In the event of an emergency, a well-established total community Neighborhood Watch program can significantly expedite the response time and teamwork of law enforcement agencies and local support groups. Crime Prevention and Reduction Research has consistently shown that Neighborhood Watch programs contribute to crime prevention and reduction. When ALL residents, community leadership teams, and ongoing support vendors participate the deterrent effect of the community NW becomes that much stronger and can become even more fun! This total community commitment not only leads to a safer community but also fosters a greater sense of pride and satisfaction among residents, knowing that they are making a tangible difference in their own backyard, along with the community! Many thanks to our CDDs, HOAs, Management Teams, CAP, CERT, Security Officers, along with a special thanks to those within the Lake Ashton Community (Lake Wales and Winter Haven) our Neighborhood Watch Deputies, Block Captains and the Senior Program Advisors. Those combined efforts have produced a total community program that is recognized throughout law enforcement on all levels. This year’s dance and golf tournament are being sponsored by Lake Ashton Golf Management, and all funds raised will be donated to the Breast Cancer Foundation of Central Florida. The mission of this organization is to ease financial worries of local, Central Florida breast cancer patients and their families. While a patient is in active treatment the foundation’s financial assistance program helps patients with non-medical financial expenses such as rent, mortgage payments, utility bills, car repairs, car payments, gas for treatment travel, and/or daycare costs. In addition, there is a children’s fund that provides financial compensation for each child in the household upon initial application approval and during the holidays. The dance will be held on Sunday evening, October 13 from 7 to 10 pm at the HFC. An LA resident, George, will DJ. BYOB and food! Decorate your tables! GET YOUR PINK ON! Tablecloths will be provided. Tickets go on sale at the HFC beginning September 1. You may reserve a table for $10. Advance ticket purchases are $10 per person and $15 at the door the night of the dance. 100% of all tickets will go to the foundation! November 9 is the Pink Ribbon Golf Tournament. In 2022, Lake Ashton donated just over $47,000 to the Watson Clinic Foundation through sponsors, donations, silent auctions and registrations. Lake Ashton would like to meet or exceed that goal this year. All Lake Ashton registered golfers may sign up at the Pro Shop beginning September 15. You may sign up as a foursome, a pair or individually. Beginning October 6, guests of Lake Ashton golf members may register if there is space available. The Member fee is $45 and the Member Guest fee is $75 which includes a round of golf, lunch and a donation to BCFCF. Sponsorships are available from $50 to $1,000. JUST AROUND THE CORNER - TOYS FOR TOTS By Fred Halde As I’ve wandered through a few stores lately, I’ve seen Halloween decorations, costumes and candy on full display. If I had done a deeper dive I wonder if I also would have seen Thanksgiving and Christmas themed items on the shelves as well. All this is to say that the holiday season is around the corner and that also means the “Toys for Tots” box will soon be on your doorstep. Well, not really on YOUR doorstep, but set up in the Health and Fitness Center. For a number of years Lake Ashton has responded with overwhelming generosity to this community outreach, which seeks to put a toy or two in the hands of children during the holidays. It is my hope this next “giving” season will see the same kind of response of love and caring. COMMUNITY SOCIAL POTLUCKS The best way to meet new friends is over a good meal! Join friends and neighbors at the monthly potlucks held at the Clubhouse and HFC. Bring a dish to share! Sign up online or at either Activities Office. LA PURPLE ST A RS AN N U AL CHILI COOK-OFF By David Harrison The LA Purple Stars will once again have their Chili Cook-off on January 24, 2025 to raise money for The American Cancer Society. This event has been a favorite among residents because we invite twenty to make chili for tasting. We also sell corn bread, water, and baked goods. Next year we will also have draft beer from Charm City, so bring a few extra bucks. We'll start selling tasting tickets in November. More information to come next month.

LAKE ASHTON FRIENDS OF MEALS ON WHEELS By Marcia Santino This month we shine a spotlight on Meals on Wheels recipient, Hermine “Hermie” Buckholtz. Hermie (pictured with Susan Eldridge) was born in Vienna, Austria in 1923. A self-proclaimed “war bride”, she met her future husband, MSG “Buck” Buckholtz in Würzburg, Germany in 1957. They were married in 1958 and moved to a home near Lake Cannon in Winter Haven in 1960 where Hermie still resides. She has been a widow for 29 years. When asked about her secret to longevity she said “No vitamins; just good food… especially rye bread with butter.” Hermie has been receiving meals from MOWPolk five days a week for over 10 years. “You couldn’t ask for better service. The volunteers are devoted, so courteous, very friendly and dependable,” she said. LA PICKLEBALL By John Savala swimmers represent it at local, regional, state, and national senior swim meets. Come try it. For more information, contact sandyw1994@aol.com. Finally the calendar has turned to autumn. Unfortunately, the weather doesn’t know it yet. Consequently, we’ll have to deal with the warm temperatures a little while longer, kind of like we do every year. The LAIICDD approved repurposing one of the two tennis courts on the west as pickleball courts. Response, as expected, has been positive from the members of the pickleball club. Uncertainness remains, however, around exactly when the conversion will take place. Many differing ideas are floating around as to how the courts will be designated for play. Perhaps certain courts will be reserved for players of specific skill levels to keep the play fun for everyone, but that remains to be seen. Clinics for players that are new to pickleball will start up again this month. They will be held the first two Mondays of each month and are limited to 10 attendees. To sign up, contact Dennis Santino at coachdennis@myyahoo.com. The annual membership meeting will be held in November where members will be able to hear from their elected officers, discuss matters pertaining to pickleball play here in Lake Ashton and have the opportunity to nominate and vote for their officers for the next year. LAPA members, please keep your dues current, invite your fellow players who are not members to join our club and participate in the fundraising efforts that are underway to facilitate the addition of the new pickleball courts. LA SWIM CLUB By Sandy White Do you like being physically fit, or do you wish to become fit? Do you like swimming (the best all-around exercise)? If yes, come swim with the LA Swim Club and enjoy the suggested or self-directed workouts. LASC reserves the HFC indoor pool on Mondays and Wednesdays 1 to 2 pm and Saturdays 10 to 11 am. Working out with others keeps one motivated and is safer than swimming alone. Plus, it's fun meeting new people with similar fitness goals. We even have a volunteer swim instructor and experienced coach. There is also an opportunity to participate in senior swim meets, which is another good motivator to get and stay in shape. Lake Ashton has had a number of SENIOR SOFTBALL By Bob Zelazny Winter Haven Senior Softball Club offers men and women over the age of 55 the opportunity to play organized slow pitch softball. Games are played on Tuesday and Friday mornings at the Diamondplex on 6th Street across from Polk State College. The league is organized into two divisions: 55-68 years, and 69 and older. The oldest player is 86 years young. Rules have been put in place to ensure player safety and provide for a fair level of competition. Runners are available if you have bad knees. While we play year round, actual league play runs from January to March. During that time, players will be assigned to a team that will compete for the season title. Cost is just $50 which includes two uniforms, a hat, three social events with a family barbecue at the end of the season, and a year’s worth of fun and exercise. You can come out and play one game for free. If you are interested, contact Bob Zelazny at 863-325-8098 for more information. FRIENDLY BOCCE GROUP By Stephanie Iszak The Friendly Bocce Group would like to invite all Lake Ashton residents to come out on Mondays and Fridays from 10 am to 1 pm to play some fun games of Bocce Ball. Come out and see our “new” courts. No experience is required. Our group also has the Bocce courts reserved for the 1st and 3rd Fridays for the 2024 season from 4 to 6 pm for our tailgate parties. Bring your drinks and an appetizer to share. This is a great opportunity to socialize and play some games. 34 All information for the LA Friendly Bocce Group will be disseminated via "Talk of Lake Ashton" (TOLA) on Facebook, Lake Ashton Friendly Bocce on Facebook, emails, email blasts, and in our LA Times. Any questions please contact Stephanie Iszak at 609-980-9505 or at siszak@comcast.net or Tammy Shields at 863-632-2024 or at tammy.shields1221@gmail.com. Looking forward to having many new Friendly Bocce players.

Our latest class featured three paint pouring techniques and everyone enjoyed getting a little messy. These rocks are perfect for adding messages to spread kindness and bring a smile to our community. LA Rockers meet in the HFC Community Room from 1 to 3 pm on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month. The 1st Wednesday meeting is for current members to learn new skills and techniques. We resumed our normal schedule, so there will be a new lesson on October 2 for current members. The 3rd Wednesday is a “Free Paint and Newcomers Session”. Newcomers are welcome to come and give the group a try! Newcomers will be lent the supplies they need for their first session so you must contact MJ Richards (mjmrichards517@gmail.com) at least five days before their first meeting so that supplies can be provided. If you are lucky enough to find a rock, please post a photo of your rock on Talk of Lake Ashton’s (TOLA) Facebook page. It means a lot for us to see where our rocks go. ATTN. HOGAN LOOPERS! LAMGA By David Kubissa This month’s LAMGA report keys in on highlights from the summer and upcoming events in the fall. Here is the lineup. Olympics competition: In mid-August, after deadline for this article, LAMGA hosted a game honoring the Paris Olympics. Organized by board secretary Jim Shillito and tournament chairman Tim Wayt, the game pitted neighborhood teams against one another. (See photo of winners.) It concluded with a lunch. President’s Cup competition: In mid-September, the league hosted a two-day team event – Red team vs. Blue team – in advance of the President’s Cup that took place in Montreal later in the month. In a tightly contested match, Red edged Blue, 16 ½ points to 15 ½ points. Day 1 included a pre-round breakfast and Day 2 a post-tourney lunch. Sponsor Appreciation Day: The annual sponsor recognition will be held at a luncheon following the Oct. 9 game. Sponsors have been sent invitations to join that day’s round of golf. Members are encouraged to turn out for the lunch. Be on the lookout for a signup sheet on the LAMGA bulletin board. LALGA / LAMGA Tournament: This two-day event on Oct. 29 and 30 will involve four-player teams made up of players from each league. The cost per player is $25, and it includes a lunch on the second day. The format will be a shamble one day and a scramble on the other. The LAMGA board urges its members to represent our league by participating in this exciting event. Red Hoagland Challenge standings: As of the end of August, the leaders are: 1. Doug Hines, $155; 2. Mike Krigelski, $140.20; 3. Alan Gasner, $139.20; 4. Steve Kettells, $128.50. Sponsor salute: Thanks to the following businesses and organizations that contributed to the LAMGA program this year: Art’s Golf Cars, Bargain Carts, Brewer Sales and Service, Performance Golf Carts since 2021, Lake Ashton Golf Management, and Lake Ashton Ladies Golf Association. Pictured: The Gold Medal-winning team in the August Olympics competition game represented the Ashton Club / Berwick neighborhood. The team net was an average of 65.6.
