LAKE ASHTON FRIENDS OF MEALS ON WHEELS By Marcia Santino This month we shine a spotlight on Meals on Wheels recipient, Hermine “Hermie” Buckholtz. Hermie (pictured with Susan Eldridge) was born in Vienna, Austria in 1923. A self-proclaimed “war bride”, she met her future husband, MSG “Buck” Buckholtz in Würzburg, Germany in 1957. They were married in 1958 and moved to a home near Lake Cannon in Winter Haven in 1960 where Hermie still resides. She has been a widow for 29 years. When asked about her secret to longevity she said “No vitamins; just good food… especially rye bread with butter.” Hermie has been receiving meals from MOWPolk five days a week for over 10 years. “You couldn’t ask for better service. The volunteers are devoted, so courteous, very friendly and dependable,” she said. Hermie is 30 mobility throughout Polk County that depends on Meals on Wheels for nutritiously-balanced meals each week. Meal services are based on need, not age or income. For more information on meal services or to become a volunteer, please call: 863-299-1616. Please consider joining Lake Ashton Friends of Meals on Meals (“LA FOMOW”) to help promote this very deserving non-profit organization. For more information, email lafomow@gmail.com. Meetings are held in the Clubhouse Cinema on the second Monday of the month at 10 am. The club is open to Lake Ashton residents who enjoy photography. At the October meeting we’ll be discussing topics of interest for monthly meetings, club photo shoots, educational opportunities and other activities. Be sure to bring along your ideas for the fall season. Members are always encouraged to bring along a few photos to share on a USB drive. I’m looking forward to seeing current as well as potential new members. GARDEN CLUB By Lyn Davis The Lake Ashton Garden Club met this past September. Mary Jane DiLorenzo from the Lakeland African Violets Society was the guest speaker. She brought in over twenty different types of violets. Members and guests learned there is much more than your typical lavender blue violet. The club’s next meeting is October 9 at 10 am in the Pavilion. You do not need to be a member to attend. Attendees may bring to the meeting dried flowers. The club will also provide dried flowers plus frames, candles or bookmarks for display creations. Dried flowers will have a Fall theme. Sil Wells spoke briefly at the September meeting about how to dry flowers. Please bring your imagination to the next meeting.
