LA PICKLEBALL By John Savala swimmers represent it at local, regional, state, and national senior swim meets. Come try it. For more information, contact sandyw1994@aol.com. Finally the calendar has turned to autumn. Unfortunately, the weather doesn’t know it yet. Consequently, we’ll have to deal with the warm temperatures a little while longer, kind of like we do every year. The LAIICDD approved repurposing one of the two tennis courts on the west as pickleball courts. Response, as expected, has been positive from the members of the pickleball club. Uncertainness remains, however, around exactly when the conversion will take place. Many differing ideas are floating around as to how the courts will be designated for play. Perhaps certain courts will be reserved for players of specific skill levels to keep the play fun for everyone, but that remains to be seen. Clinics for players that are new to pickleball will start up again this month. They will be held the first two Mondays of each month and are limited to 10 attendees. To sign up, contact Dennis Santino at coachdennis@myyahoo.com. The annual membership meeting will be held in November where members will be able to hear from their elected officers, discuss matters pertaining to pickleball play here in Lake Ashton and have the opportunity to nominate and vote for their officers for the next year. LAPA members, please keep your dues current, invite your fellow players who are not members to join our club and participate in the fundraising efforts that are underway to facilitate the addition of the new pickleball courts. LA SWIM CLUB By Sandy White Do you like being physically fit, or do you wish to become fit? Do you like swimming (the best all-around exercise)? If yes, come swim with the LA Swim Club and enjoy the suggested or self-directed workouts. LASC reserves the HFC indoor pool on Mondays and Wednesdays 1 to 2 pm and Saturdays 10 to 11 am. Working out with others keeps one motivated and is safer than swimming alone. Plus, it's fun meeting new people with similar fitness goals. We even have a volunteer swim instructor and experienced coach. There is also an opportunity to participate in senior swim meets, which is another good motivator to get and stay in shape. Lake Ashton has had a number of SENIOR SOFTBALL By Bob Zelazny Winter Haven Senior Softball Club offers men and women over the age of 55 the opportunity to play organized slow pitch softball. Games are played on Tuesday and Friday mornings at the Diamondplex on 6th Street across from Polk State College. The league is organized into two divisions: 55-68 years, and 69 and older. The oldest player is 86 years young. Rules have been put in place to ensure player safety and provide for a fair level of competition. Runners are available if you have bad knees. While we play year round, actual league play runs from January to March. During that time, players will be assigned to a team that will compete for the season title. Cost is just $50 which includes two uniforms, a hat, three social events with a family barbecue at the end of the season, and a year’s worth of fun and exercise. You can come out and play one game for free. If you are interested, contact Bob Zelazny at 863-325-8098 for more information.
