Davis delivers a unique and intense perspective in his debut novel, Arcturus. Set against the backdrop of the first Gulf War, the story initially unfolds as a raw war narrative before venturing into the bizarre and ultimately the terrifying. With Arcturus, Davis establishes himself as a compelling new voice in war fiction. Originally from Pittsburgh, Davis served in the United States Army where he not only jumped out of perfectly good aircraft with the 82nd Airborne, but was also one of the Army’s top snipers. A father of three, Davis now lives in Lake Ashton with his wife Lynn, and little dog Lulu where he slings words and oil paint full-time. HAVE VISITORS? November is a traditional time for residents to host family and friends. Remember, when you see a visiting grandchild, they are guests of your neighbors so please extend every courtesy possible. Residents: please be tolerant of extra activity at the pool and other amenities. Those hosting family should remind them to be considerate of residents in this 55 and older community. It is helpful if a resident accompanies their guests at any of the amenities, but is not required. Anyone using amenities at the Clubhouse or HFC should have a Lake Ashton Resident Amenity Access Card or Facilities Guest Pass. All guests can be registered at either Activities Desk during business hours. Residents can call security (number on page 3) to register their guests after hours. Renters must have a copy of their fully executed rental agreement. Visit the Clubhouse Office to get your resident amenity access card (which also serves as your Resident Photo ID Card) made during the published hours for distribution or by appointment. Bring a driver's license with your Lake Ashton address on it, or the warranty deed for your home. QUI LTS OF VALOR By Carolyn Bluhm Quilters in Lake Ashton have come together to create beautiful Quilts of Valor that will be presented to 15 local veterans during the LAVA meeting on January 21, 2026 at 6:30 pm. Nominations are now being accepted from the Lake Ashton community for this special event. The first 15 veterans nominated will receive a quilt during the ceremony, and additional presentations will be scheduled in the future to honor more veterans. A Quilt of Valor® (QOV) is a handmade quilt created by volunteer quilters across the United States and presented to service members or veterans as a heartfelt “thank you” for their service and sacrifice. The QOV program was founded in 2003 by Catherine Roberts, who envisioned quilts as comforting expressions of gratitude. Since then, nearly 450,000 Quilts of Valor have been awarded nationwide. The Quilts of Valor Foundation and its dedicated volunteers seek to recognize those who have served, offering warmth, appreciation, and the affirmation of a caring community. If a nominated veteran cannot attend due to health issues, special arrangements can be made for a personal presentation. Special thanks to LAVA, Creative Quilters, and the LAVA Auxiliary for their support. Contact: Carolyn Bluhm – 719-510-1088, CHBluhm@outlook.com. RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT By Marianne Zak Rocky Miller moved to Lake Ashton with his wife, Jeanette, in 2014, drawn by the community and their shared love of golf. Married for 54 years, the high school sweethearts built a lifetime of memories together. After Jeanette’s courageous battle with pancreatic cancer ended in 2022, Rocky and their daughter, Lindsay of Marietta, Georgia, continue to honor her through those cherished memories. At just eighteen, Rocky enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served thirteen months in combat south of the DMZ during the 1968 TET Offensive. After returning home safely, he and Jeanette married and settled in Marietta, where he trained Marine Reserves at Dobbins Air Force Base. Rocky enjoyed a 34-year career with Echlin Automotive in Branford, Connecticut, retiring at 58 as Senior Vice President of Sales for the “Underhood Group.” The couple discovered Lake Ashton through Jeanette’s business, More Space Place, and knew it was the perfect place to settle down. A six-year volunteer for the Florida State Golf Association, Rocky has captained the Central Florida Rating Team for four years. His team of eight has rated 14 more than 100 Central Florida courses, spending hours on-site to ensure fair competition for golfers of all skill levels. An avid woodworker, Rocky jokes about losing two fingertips to his craft. He recently helped install new flooring at the Ridge Art Gallery and engraved 22 charcuterie boards for the Sons of the American Legion tournament. Using a wood-burning laser, he creates custom pieces such as cutting boards, plaques, and ammo boxes. Rocky now volunteers with fellow resident and publisher Terrie Purdum at the Ridge Art Association. Last December, they decorated a red, white, and blue Christmas tree for charity. For the upcoming Marine Corps 250th Anniversary celebration at Lake Ashton on November 10, Rocky donating an engraved ammo box with the official Marine Corps emblem — a fitting tribute from a proud veteran. SPOTLIGHT: A GOLDEN COUPLE By Gail Guenther Ted and Vivian Harmon will be celebrating 50 years of marriage this December 2025 with a party of family and friends at the Clubhouse. Ted and Vivian first lived in Greenfield, Indiana where they raised two children and have three grandchildren. Their other big love was vintage cars. After moving to Lake Ashton in 2017 they became very active with cards, Ted with corn hole, and decorating for Christmas. Vivian is also busy with pickleball, trivia, dancing at the club events, shopping, and traveling with friends. Vivian’s love of animals is very clear as she is a popular dog and cat sitter. When you see this active, fun loving couple, please wish them a Happy 50th anniversary!

L.A. LOOKS Wildlife Corner Photo & Article By Barbara Ann Comer The great blue heron is the largest heron in North America. Since it occurs in all the lower 48 states as well as southeastern Alaska most new residents can readily identify them. Despite its size, it is quite graceful on the wing and always a treat to see in takeoff or landing. Found at any body of water in Lake Ashton year round, they have even nested here. Nests are usually high in a tree and in colonies. The usual three to five eggs give way to young birds resembling gawky teenagers. Notorious for playing with their food before finally sending it down the hatch, they eat mainly fish, but also enjoy dining on frogs, turtles, snakes, rodents and even birds. On a hot Florida day they can be seen cooling themselves with the undersides of their wings facing upwards producing an odd looking pose. WETLANDS AND CONSERVATION AREAS OF LAKE ASHTON Many of Lake Ashton's wetlands and conservation areas are important to our community in a number of ways. They serve many functions like protect against flooding, improve water quality, and provide a home for threatened and protected species. Wetlands in Lake Ashton clean the storm water that is referred to as “runoff”. After that, this water goes to Lake Ashton. When the water gets to the lake, it will go through the outfall structure, which is on 16 the southwest shore of the lake. After that, the water will go to Peace Creek and then to the Peace River. The Peace River can overflow and flood when it rains a lot. This could cause lakes and ponds to have higher than normal water levels, which will be felt by the residents in Lake Ashton. Our aquatics vendor and Lake Ashton CDD staff work together all the time to make sure that our wetlands are being managed properly. Email Matt Fisher at mfisher@lakeashtoncdd.com with any questions or concerns. Residents are reminded that they should not do any unauthorized maintenance in these areas. LA II (WH) HOA NEWS By Connie Strasberg I am glad to announce the newly reorganized HOA Board of Directors that was chosen at the Special HOA Meeting held on September 25. Due to the resignations of two directors, it was necessary to reorganize the board for the remainder of the current term. The new Board of Directors currently has three members, which is quorum. This board will serve until the Annual Meeting that is scheduled for November 18. • President: Connie Strassberg, TreasurerLA2HOA@gmail.com • VP/ARC Liaison: Mike Brennan VPARCLA2HOA@gmail.com • Secretary/Treasurer: Ray Rudy VPTreasurerLA2HOA@gmail.com At the Annual Meeting, Directors are elected for two year terms. On odd years three Directors are up for election while on even years two Directors are up for election. Right after the election, the entire board meets privately to select which of the Directors will take which board positions for the upcoming year. Even though someone is elected as a Director for a two year term, that Director may serve in different capacities each of those years. On November 18, 2025, the community will need to elect three Directors to two-year terms and one Director to a one-year term to fill the remainder of the term of one of those who resigned. After the election, the board will organize itself for the coming year.

LA (LW) HOA CORNER By Deanne Mayne Greetings from the LW HOA! If you haven’t yet signed up for an account with Stambaugh please do so at your earliest convenience. The HOA member portal is lakeashtonhoa.org where you can register for your account. If you have not yet signed up, you may be missing notices that the HOA sends out as reminders or pertinent information residents need to know. Please note that the October meeting was moved to November 11 at 4:30 pm in the Clubhouse Craft Room. ARC members are available the third Wednesday of the month (November 19th) in the clubhouse card room at 3:30. If you have questions for ARC or need assistance with requests, several committee members will be available to help. This is becoming a popular event! Related to ARC: ANY changes to the outside of your home need ARC approval. Do not assume you can “ask for forgiveness” if the home modification does not adhere to the ARC guidelines. This can be a very costly mistake. In November, Compliance will focus on landscape beds and paint. Darker paint colors are more susceptible to fading and may need painting more often than lighter colors. Compliance is also looking at yard art. Yard art items are limited to five in the Front Yard, five in the Rear Yard, and five in each Side Yard. Many front yards have more than what is allowed. Also, keep in mind the size restrictions for yard art. Statues and figurines are considered yard art and shall be no more than four feet in height. Yard art must be no larger than twenty inches in a horizontal diameter at the widest point as displayed. Yard art taller than twelve inches must be at least seven feet from the street curb. The Board of Directors welcomed Charles Roland as a new board member at the September meeting. The Board is still in need of a volunteer for one more open Director position. Please consider helping the HOA keep Lake Ashton the wonderful community that we call home. LA HOA Board Members • John Donahue, President and ARC Director president@lakeashtonhoa.org 17 • Dee Mayne, Secretary & Compliance Director sec2@lakeashtonhoa.org • Glen Hart, Director vp2@lakeashtonhoa.org • Charles Roland, Board Member • ARC: ARC@lakeashtonHOA.org • Compliance: compliance@lakeashtonHOA.org SAFEGUARD STORM DRAINS Please do not place yard debris and clippings on top or near stormwater inlets (as shown here). This could get into the stormwater system causing damage or clogging the system which could lead to localized flooding. The District, made up of Lake Ashton residents, are responsible for the maintenance of the stormwater system within Lake Ashton so damages come out of the budget which is largely funded by resident assessments. Let’s all work together to extend the life of our infrastructure.

SAFETY NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH (NW) CORNER By Fay Wood, NW Chief Holiday Crime Prevention: Part Two The holiday season is fast approaching, and while it’s a time for joy and celebration, it’s also when criminals are most active. This is part two of our holiday crime prevention series, focusing on safety at home, in parking lots, and online. Get to Know Your Neighbors If you haven’t already, the holidays are the perfect time to connect with your neighbors—those next door, across the street, and even behind your home. Communities where neighbors look out for one another are safer and more aware of suspicious activity. A simple introduction could make a big difference. When shopping before sunrise or after dark, park in well-lit areas and keep your keys in hand. Stay alert and scan your surroundings before getting in or out of your car. Check the inside of your vehicle before entering, and if you notice signs of a break-in, call law enforcement immediately. Stay Alert While Shopping Crowded stores are prime hunting grounds for thieves and pickpockets. Keep your hands free by avoiding too many packages, and never leave belongings unattended. Avoid wearing expensive jewelry or carrying large amounts of cash. Beware of “con artists” who may try to distract you. Record your credit card numbers in a secure place at home in case they are lost or stolen. Shop with Friends—There’s Safety in Numbers Plan shopping trips with friends or relatives whenever possible. Groups are less likely to be targeted, and you can help keep an eye out for each other. If shopping with children, keep them close and teach them what to do if separated. Instruct them to find a store clerk or security guard and ensure they know their full name and a contact number. PARKING & ROAD SAFETY From the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration: Pedestrian Safety 8 Driving Safety Tips • Look out for pedestrians everywhere, at all times. • Use extra caution when driving in hard-to-see conditions, such as nighttime or bad weather. • Slow down and be prepared to stop when turning or otherwise entering a crosswalk. • Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and stop well back from the crosswalk to give other vehicles an opportunity to see the crossing pedestrians. • Never pass vehicles stopped at a crosswalk. There may be people crossing where you can’t see. • Never drive under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. • Follow the speed limit, especially around people on the street, in school zones and in neighborhoods where children are present. • Be extra cautious when backing up and look for pedestrians. 20

8 Walking Safety Tips • Follow the rules of the road and obey signs and signals. • Walk on sidewalks whenever they are available. • If there is no sidewalk, walk facing traffic and as far from traffic as possible. • Cross streets at crosswalks or intersections. Look for cars in all directions, including those turning left or right. • If a crosswalk or intersection is not available, locate a well-lit area where you have the best view of traffic. Wait for a gap in traffic that allows enough time to cross safely; continue watching for traffic as you cross. • Watch for cars entering or exiting driveways, or backing up in parking lots. • Avoid alcohol and drugs when walking; they impair your abilities and your judgment. • Embrace walking as a healthy form of transportation — get up, get out and get moving. All vehicles, including golf carts, must obey all stop signs and the 20 mph speed limit throughout Lake Ashton. A person operating a golf cart on public roads or streets who is under 18 years must possess a valid learner’s permit or driver’s license. STORM SEASON REMINDER Hurricane season runs through November 30, and residents are encouraged to stay prepared and alert. Even late in the season, tropical storms and hurricanes can form with little notice. Please review your emergency plans, check supplies, and ensure you’re signed up for local alerts. Staying informed and ready helps keep our community safe through the end of hurricane season. God Bless America, and especially our military and veterans! HEARTFELT HUGS By MJ Richards Heartfelt Hugs is a group here different from most groups or clubs in Lake Ashton. We never meet as a group. Instead, we crochet or knit baby blankets and hats at home and at our leisure for needy babies. We also donate newborn blankets for mothers who lose their babies either at birth or too early in the pregnancy, so they have something to take home with them after they have held their babies. In the past three years of our existence, we have donated over 400 blankets! Many of us love to create items but have no one to give them to as gifts. All you have to do is make some blankets, hats or even lap blankets and shawls for the elderly and drop them off at my house. My husband and I deliver them! If you are interested in this relaxing and very rewarding activity, please email mjmrichards517@gmail.com. The Magic Years Club, which is open to all Disney lovers and those who want to learn a little more about Disney, had its meeting October 13. After catching up on what everyone did this summer and talking about some of the upcoming new rides/events at WDW, our members participated in a challenging Disney trivia quiz to earn a prize. The team of Jeffrey and Michele Meuser were the overall winners with 33 out of 36 points! Luckily there were enough prizes for every team to win one. Would you have known the answer to the question: What was Dory's iconic phrase in the movie Finding Nemo? (Answer: “Just keep swimmin’.") It was nice to welcome some new members, and I would be remiss if I didn't thank Debbie and Pat Rapp for hosting September's meeting. The meeting helps plan activities for the coming month and future. For example, the club planned a field trip to National Encounters Training Facility on Thompson Nursery Rd. This facility trains birds of prey for shows like Disney and around the country. Sometimes we can see the birds flying over Lake Ashton in training. That was an October activity. A future activity will be Jacaranda Hotel in Avon Park, where members will go together for a nice afterChristmas buffet in January. And members get together for Theatre Winter Haven productions, as well as trips to places like Bok Tower. Members can offer choices that appeal to therm. In addition to planning fun activities, members adopt senior orphans in Polk County, and provide Christmas gifts in December and July. The “orphans” don’t know who made the donations, and they have been asked by social workers to pick their top three gift wishes. Usually they pick things like a shower chair or even food for their pets. All singles in Lake Ashton are welcome to come to our meetings, and also to play Five Crown cards every Sunday at 2 p.m., same place. Also, the fourth Thursday of every month at 4 pm, members get together at the Pavilion to share snacks and a drink. Give the club a try, if you are interested.

GOLF LA NINERS By Sandy Hockenberry Baker showed some magic and donated a free lunch at the Eagles Nest to Claudia Loesel. New member Barbara Moul was welcomed by board members Cecily Harmon, Treasurer, and Sharron Murphy, President. The LA Niners celebrated their opening day with a footballthemed tailgate party, but the weather did not cooperate with the golf game, resulting in some soggy players and most teams not finishing the round. However, the rain did not dampen anyone’s spirit and everyone still enjoyed a fun tailgate party. Anthony Bowden and Dana Ferrande were terrific grill masters, grilling hot dogs and burgers for the Niners. Kevin Personalized care in the comfort of home. LAMGA By David Kubissa The highlight of October was the Red Hoagland Cup, named after the Hyundai dealership that has been a loyal LAMGA sponsor. This special event was fashioned after the Ryder Cup with two teams – Red vs. Blue -- facing off over a two-day tournament on Oct. 15 and 16. Teams consisted of 10 twosomes playing against one another on both courses. Day 1 consisted of two matches on the East Course: Best Ball and Modified Alternate Shot. Day 2, on the West Course, featured nine-hole singles matches involving all 40 players in the field. When it was over, the Red team came out on top, 33 to 27. Congratulations to the winning team: Tim Wayt, Dave Dersham, Bob Plummer, Gary Pagel, Dan Baun, Rolly Geyer, Tom Murphy, David Kubissa, David Langel, Rick Steury, Doug Hines, Bob Dupuis, Mike Stadfeld, Mike Krigelski, Russ Hopp, Rick Simonetta, Richard Sutherland, Jim Simpson, Matt Kosek and Tom Williams. All players competing in this first Red Hoagland Cup received a commemorative hat. Board election: Three board seats are up for election this year. LAMGA members interested in running for these seats must file a self-nomination form by Nov. 15. The election is scheduled to take place the third week in November. All three incumbents have said they would run for re-election, and if there are no other candidates, the election will not be necessary. LAMGA members will be kept updated by email. Red Hoagland Challenge: The standings as of Sept. 30 are: 1. Steve Kettells, $188.15; 2. Mike Krigelski, $171.50; 3. Stephen Predoehl, $168.90; 4. Ed Commons, $167.90 Sponsor salute: Thanks to the following businesses, individuals and groups for supporting LAMGA: Brad Kirwan Real Estate; Mike Krigelski, A+ Realty; Lake Ashton Realty, Terri Mattocks; Lake Ashton Realty, Lori Raath; Realty Inspection Solution; Ann & Todd McCarthy; William & Pat Littlefield; Sam & Trudy Guardian; Tom DiLaura’s Friday Group Right: Pat O’Neil tees off on No. 1 West as Russ Hopp and Norm Stebbins await their turn to hit. The West Course was the scene on Day 2 of 40 nine-hole singles matches, each worth one point. Far Right: Players on each team received a commemorative hat with the LAMGA insignia on the front and the Red Hoagland Cup logo on the side. Below: The scoreboard tells the story. After Day 1, the Blue team held a one-point lead, but on Day 2, the Red team dominated singles play, piling up a seven-point advantage that led to its victory.
