Science and Spirituality: are they really poles apart? Dr Madhumati Chatterji MBBS, FAFPHM. Melbourne, Australia Long gone are the days when spirituality was for the hopeless, helpless and Godless. Spirituality in all its forms is gradually getting embraced and embedded in our daily life, from schools, to hospitals to prisons, more as a necessity, to seek a stress-free, violence-free, disease-free, healthy and happy life. Each one of us is, in our ways seeking happiness – through a calm, relaxed and centred state of mind; coping skills to overcome grief, loss and failures; success, achievements and recognition in all endeavours; mental focus, enthusiasm and energy; and finally, a sense of belongingness with family, friends and the whole world. I first experienced Sudarshan Kriya yoga and associated spiritual practices (loosely termed SKY) of the Art of Living Foundation in 2002 on the insistence of my sister, soon after the unexpected demise of my husband. Being the evidence-based medical practitioner that I was, I searched literature (www.artofliving.org). What stood out for me then was its benefit on mental health, especially depression, anxiety and sleep. I decided to give it a try as I was desperately seeking to overcome grief. Meditation workshop) was probably one of the best decisions of my life. It helped me get back to my old self and be in an even better space that I am in today. So, how does SKY work? It works through the breath and brings about a change in the state of the mind and body. The breath is central to connecting the body to higher levels of our existence, such as the intellect, memory, ego and finally the higher SELF. A specific type of breath, called ‘Ujjayi’or glottic breath is central to the techniques and along with abdominal breathing (yogic breath) leads to an instantaneous calming and energising effect. Prana or the subtle life force energy, akin to ‘Chi’ is stimulated results in a sense of elation, centredness and energy. The spiritual explanation is that working at the subtle levels of existence harmonises our very Being with the wider consciousness. No doubt one can reach bliss, even if momentarily. Medical research (www.aolresearch.org) indicates that regular practice of SKY has an impact on the following areas of the human body and mind: 1. Vagus nerve stimulation 2. Development of pre-cancerous states 12. Balanced neurotransmitters to prevent Parkinsons, Alzheimers and Dementia 13. Prevention of metabolic syndrome (Obesity, Heart Disease, Diabetes) 14. Genomic stabilisation As we know stress leads to coronary artery disease, gastrointestinal disorders, musculoskeletal disorders, depression, anxiety, auto-immune diseases and even cancer through the accumulation of free radicals (Figure 1). Studies have shown the reduction of free radicals and elevation of antioxidants and endorphins in the blood following the 55 and 65 minutes of practice of SKY (Figure 2 and 3). Figure 1. Effect on blood lipids 36 Figure 4. Studies of natural killer (NK) cells have shown a significant decline following regular SKY practice (Figure 4). Research on the effects on lipid metabolism is astounding with decreased LDL and total cholesterol with increase in HDL, the good lipid, following regular SKY practice (Figure 5). Figure 5. Sudarshan Kriya (Su=proper, Darshan=vision, Kriya=cleansing action) is a breathing technique developed by Shri Shri Ravi Shankar, the Founder of the Art of Living Foundation based on the principle that every emotion has a corresponding breath; hence if the cause and effect be reversed a person is better able to cope with emotional changes. The Art of Living Foundation, established in 1981, is the largest volunteerbased not-for-profit organisation that has spread to more than 157 countries and has followings in more than 350 million people of all backgrounds, faith, colour or creed across the world. In the US and Canada, the main centres are in Boone, North Carolina and Montreal, respectively. With the COVID-19 pandemic causing such havoc and devastation across the world, it is time that everyone gave SKY a try! THE RAVENS Kaushik Bagchi. Albany, NY Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December. The day before, my daughter pointed out a huge flock of ravens circling our back yard. They congregated for about an hour, but periodically would take flight together, forming a perfect V-pattern. What are they seeking? Are they watching us? What news can they bring? Why are they just in our back yard? I should have taken them seriously. Maybe their presence predicted an impending problem. “Don’t you remember the Hitchcock movie we saw?” probed pre-teen Ella, the only one of my offspring who can tolerate watching a movie made before 1980. “Yes, I remember.” It was my goal to educate my children dispassionately. I forced her to see The Birds so she may realize that nature can be fierce, and that animals can be evil. I frequently poked fun at Ella’s selective compassion for certain animals, such as furry mammals and birds with motley plumage. I tried to tell her that vultures and cockroaches are more important than cats and dogs. She tries her best at least to remain open-minded and fair. “Are ravens bad luck?” she asked innocently. I couldn’t tell her the truth, as I don’t know the real deal with these ugly birds. I just don’t like that they unload their wrath on defenseless cars. As I set off to go to the hospital early this morning, I found their copious droppings cemented onto my Subaru’s windshield. I had a foreboding the day wouldn’t go as planned. By 7:30 A.M., amidst the bustle of the pre-operative care unit, I finally got off the phone with the nursing home supervisor, having voiced my astonishment and displeasure. I never thought a resident at this facility would get more than stale applesauce to go with his morning medication. After finding out what my patient ate, I made sure I wrote down the number of the nursing home and considered putting myself on the waiting list. During my twilight years of decrepitude, I wouldn’t have to depend on my children to wheel me to IHOP every Sunday. “Two eggs, three sausage links, two flapjacks with strawberries. Oh, yes, and coffee and cream.” I saw a speck of a crumb caught in the empty buttonhole of his hospital gown. Trace evidence. He looked at me obliviously and guiltlessly. “Hey Doc, we gonna do it today?” He forgot to UPAHAAR 2021 উপহার ১৪২৮ 8

mention the sponge cake. He must have enjoyed his meal which the aide mistakenly offered him just before the ambulance crew came to take him to Albany Medical Center Hospital. The crackling and intermittently fading voice on the speaker phone continued, “I’m so sorry, Doctor, but our aide forgot that your patient was having surgery today. I don’t know what else to say.” Five hours to fix two complicated fractures. All planned out. Nursing home called three times to confirm the surgery date and time. Custom implants ordered from the orthopedic implant vendor. Mental blueprints drawn and sequence of steps reviewed last night during my hypnagogic state. Nerves and blood vessels to avoid. Would bone grafting be necessary? I hope the patient listens to my instructions. Sleep, you have a long day tomorrow. Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary. But no one told the aide not to give him breakfast on the morning of his surgery. The patient and I had the day off. In the past, I would welcome a day off from work. I used to go to the neighborhood duck pond, sit on a dilapidated wooden bench, and read Pride and Prejudice like a well-rounded present-day Renaissance man. I quickly realized that all the hoopla surrounding a strained romance could have been remedied easily by better modes of transportation and ineloquent and terse text messages. “Yo Darcy, after you proposed to me, I was ROFL!!! CU later, I’m going to Rio with my BFF Wickham. ” There would be no requirement for a long-winded letter of explanation written by a charlatan calligrapher, no dramatic tryst under a weeping willow in the dewy meadow, and no patience needed to listen to an ardent, pathetic soliloquy which normally follows the refrain of sobbing. Just a wet slap to jar the torpid, graceful romance. Bad grammar, misspellings, and arcane acronyms only would help accelerate disillusionment and end all future expectations. There were other times I would depart industrial Worcester and abscond to the nearest casino without my wife’s knowing. Foxwoods or Mohegan Sun, each venue with its unique tawdry decor and even more indistinguishable clientele. The odds were the same. The House always wins, even if you’re a Visiting “Professor” disguised in torn Levi’s and a T-shirt sporting a beer logo but deep inside hoping to card-count your way to financial solvency. But I always paused and didn’t display confidence (or probabilistic prudence) when it came to splitting nines against Blackjack Dealer’s eight. Never do it if the count is unfavorable or Dealer is a Vietnamese woman under the age of 25. And don’t drink the free alcohol. I had a system. But the one question I got wrong on my Math SAT blew my confidence for the rest of my life. The one that got away. I counted wrong. I never could be on the MIT Blackjack Team. I espied a familiar looking 60-something year-old Indian gentleman, probably a bachelor or divorced based his attire: wrinkled khaki trousers with oversized belt, striped dress shirt with a tight rectangular bulge within its shirt pocket, Adidas sneakers with polyester socks, a gold watch on one wrist and a sacred Rakhi thread on the other. No wedding band. He was wandering near an adjacent table, intensely watching several rounds of Blackjack. He spotted me from fifty feet with his minus 12 diopters rifle scope-like spectacles; he cocked his head to the side and asked me from a distance, “Are you from India?” I just remembered he was the guy who asked the exact same question two months ago when he first saw me in Foxwoods, and I then entertained his friendly invitation with a curt head side-tilt. Either it was not emphatic enough to convey an affirmative response at the time or he felt the need to squeeze the entire surface of the melon to ensure its ripeness. Thus, he asked me again. I partially identified with the man’s uncertainty. I similarly was nonplussed when the Air India check-in girl addressed my burning question, “Will the plane leave without me as I’m not checked in?” with the same ambiguous head tilt. I later consulted my oldest and dearest friend who was born in Gujarat and brought up in Queens. He guessed this gentleman probably also is Gujarati based on my precise description of his head tilt. Gesticulations, like deities, often are regional. “Of course I’m from India,” I proudly declared (but only to myself). I was speechless. I never asserted verbally what I was thinking. I assumed he knew what I was meaning based on our common cultural understanding and acceptance of gesticulations. I signaled to him this time with the ever so popular exaggerated yet equally ambiguous head nod and raised eyebrows to exact final affirmation and imbue kinship. Ambivalently, I also had less than conciliatory thoughts - I had hoped my wordless dagger strike the nosy man in the forehead hard enough that he not ask me again about my background and business and let me float peacefully in the abyss of anonymity. I ignored the man for the next hour and continued my efforts at the table. I gradually kept losing more of my initial winnings and thereafter switched to minimum bet. Each shoe dragged on with no exciting deals. While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping. “Doctor Kaushik Bagchi, please call the operator, or come to the courtesy desk. [Static, then a punctuated ‘pop’]. Doctor Kaushik Bagchi…” A monotone, yet incisively peremptory voice that would inveigle the most nailed-down gambler caught my attention immediately. What startled me was not my name being called out in the middle of the casino, but that my name was perfectly pronounced. And who the hell knows I’m a doctor? I’m a real estate guy. What can be worse than being tracked down by an unknown assailant? By someone who actually knows you and has no problem exposing you. Did someone I know get hurt or die? I always hated when I had to raise my hand (half-willingly) on an airplane after the captain asked for a doctor. Once it was for a guy with kidney UPAHAAR 2021 উপহার ১৪২৮ 10

stones. “Give him lots of water!” I barked. Four years of medical school and five more years of residency to learn that brilliant secret. I’m sure I dazzled the flight attendants. I just was glad it wasn’t a pregnant woman in labor. I forgot the table count. I retrieved my nickels and wished my losing compatriots the best of luck, but I feared my predicament may be worse. “Are you really a doctor?” asked the muscle-bound, perennially coppertone, obnoxious Strong Islander with the slick bleach blond hair who stood behind me for the last half-hour repeatedly insisting that he bankroll me every time I split against Dealer’s six. He couldn’t help screaming “MONKEY” every opportunity available. He wasn’t even playing! And he was wearing a Baltimore Ravens jersey! Somehow that clued me in to the possibility the table was getting cold. “Of course he’s a doctor!” proudly chirped the Gujarati. “Doctor Kaushik Bagchi.” Soon again I heard a tapping somewhat louder than before. I approached the desk as quickly as possible to avoid another announcement. “I’m B-A-G-C-H-I,” I asserted pre-emptively. I didn’t want the Courtesy Fairy have me clarify the difficult pronunciation and spelling of my six-letter name, and then ask if it is French. “Oh, yes. Sorry to disturb you, Doctor. Angela has left a phone number to the clinic. Please call her immediately.” On a Thursday afternoon when I’m not supposed to be at work? When I’m up $200? When I have the day off and nobody knows? Almost nobody. My secretary must have had an inkling; she frequently has heard me express my lame fantasy that I should just quit my job and make money at Foxwoods. Does my neophyte orthopedic resident have a disaster waiting for me in the emergency room? I’m not even on call. Maybe one of my patients has a complication? I dialed the clinic directly and asked for my indefatigable attention-to-every-detail tell your boss everything top of her class but loves her Mama’s cookies all-time favorite resident. “Hey, it’s Angela. I’m sorry, but your secretary Sue told me you would be at Foxwoods. I hope you don’t mind, but I repeated X-rays on a guy you casted yesterday, and it still looks good! I just saw him in the clinic. He’s so nice!” If I didn’t clench my teeth, my jaw would have dropped. That’s it? I’ll make sure she gets a medal for conveying the least important FYI of the year. What she told me was more trivial than a plankton funeral. Interrupted me from my mini-fantasy. May I please now retreat to the meaningless abyss? But I’m uncovered and derailed. They all know about my secret hideout. The best-laid plans of mice and men... And my hard-earned paltry earnings are but a reminder of my glass UPAHAAR 2021 উপহার ১৪২৮ 11

ceiling; I’ll never be a genius. I thought I could win big at Atlantic City in 1999 and buy my fiancée a nice ring. Or use my earnings to buy a round trip ticket to India on Aeroflot economy minus class. I had dreams of grandeur at the Showboat, but I lost nearly a grand. I later wanted to visit Vegas. I promised to limit my hubris and run away with chump change. I knew I didn’t have the mettle, or capital, to bet big. Though I often thank the Creator of the Cosmos for not blighting me with calamity, I also peevishly reflect on the multitude of instances when I lost minor battles. But I keep marching. My karma is manageable. Just like my Blackjack. I briskly walked with my head down, but not due to despondency. I was mesmerized by the tessellating pattern of the casino carpet that appeared as a blurry kaleidoscope as I dashed forward. I also was titillated by the faint smell of perfume mixed with tobacco smoke wafting through the perfectly symmetric arena of fool’s paradise. The shiny slot machines beckoned me to return but their eager chiming faded into the background as I headed for the outdoor parking lot. My cadence naturally hastened as the cold air of the real world cruelly greeted me. I fumbled for my keys as I approached my car, but before I got in, I realized I had ignored the sage advice of a messenger. Today was not meant to be. I should have stayed home. I should have gone to the temple to praise the Protector. Or read Emma. I should await another fine morning and start again, and not grumble about the minor daily misfortunes. Plan for tomorrow, and forget today. I noticed a V-shaped white mark on my windshield. Bird droppings. It must have been there before, but I ignored it. My arrogance blinded me to the warning. Nature can be fierce, but we must embrace it. We must navigate cautiously. But sometime in the future when I have a day to escape, I will muster all my remaining courage to venture forth. And I will tell no one. Bellagio, Caesar’s Palace, Monte Carlo. They await the arrival of an insignificant man. But for now, as far as Foxwoods is concerned, quoth the Raven, nevermore. His master’s Jewellery Dr. Kirti Parikh. Vadodara, India Sixty five years old Rustamji Sheth had actually taken retirement from his thirty year old business, but he still occasionally did some trading. Shethji was dealing in antique collectible items. As seen in many Parsi families, he was a bachelor. He had an elder brother who had settled in the USA. His younger sister lived in Bombay. The master had left for Shirdi near Bombay in the morning. He used to go like this, driving his old car himself. He was a devotee of Saibaba of Shirdi. He will return after a full three day’s stay there. His Baroda house was in the care of his trusted servant Raghu. Raghu, his wife Jaya, and daughter Lata lived in the servants’ quarter behind Sheth’s bunglow. His wife cooked for the household and Raghu ran Sheth’s errands. He was a valet, a general duty assistant to his master. Raghu’s daughter Lata went to the Municipal School. Raghu’s father Shamlal had worked all his life at Sheth’s house. Raghu’s grandfather Kanti too was in the service of Rustam Sheth’s father Dorab Sheth. Thus, three generations of Raghu’s family had worked for these Parsi Sheths.. Raghu looked after the house and Rustamji trusted him with the keys of all almirahs. Sheth trusted him like any member of his own family. Rustamji would always buy some gifts for Raghu’s family whenever he went abroad for business. Now Lata had grown up, but when she was a little girl, Sheth would bring toys for her from Bombay. Raghu and his wife had a decent pay. Most of his expenses were borne by the master. However a man’s nature is capricious and his integrity and honesty may change unexpectedly. His master looked upon Raghu as a family member but Raghu had a feeling that though he was working so hard this Parsi Sheth was paying him only 5000 bucks. His wife’s pay was even less, only 3000 bucks. Raghu conveniently forgot that he was provided free meals and a residential quarter. Raghu felt that his master had a huge income of interest on investments and income from an occasional deal of antique items. Raghu was jealous of his master today. He was angry too. He was free whole day as the master had left for Shirdi early in the morning. He got up and went to the master’s bedroom. His wife was in the kitchen. He took the keys of the steel safe from the drawer beside Sheth’s bed. He slowly opened the safe with the key. He looked behind to confirm that there was no one else in the room. He slowly opened the locker in the safe and put his hand in it. He found a cotton purse. He opened the purse and saw that it had the UPAHAAR 2021 উপহার ১৪২৮ 13

ornaments of Sheth’s deceased mother. There were some rings, bangles, necklaces, etc. He roughly estimated the weight of the purse, nearly a pound of gold. He slowly slid the purse into his pocket. He again put his hand deep into the drawer and found a plastic envelope inside. He took the envelope out and opened it eagerly. He saw that the envelope had three or four thick papers neatly folded. The papers appeared to be some important documents because there were signatures and stamps and official seals on them. What could be these documents? They looked like some official deeds. But Raghu who had barely gone up to 4th grade could not read English at all. He kept the envelope out and after closing the safe put the keys back into the drawer. Now he had to ascertain what amount the ornaments could fetch. He had to keep his wife Jaya out of this as she was ‘very loyal’ to the master and would not be able to keep a secret. He was curious to know what those documents were about. Raghu sneaked out of the house without telling anything to anyone. He had to go to the goldsmith’s shop to know the price the ornaments would fetch. On the way to the goldsmith’s shop, he passed by the house of his daughter Lata’s teacher. Raghu knocked at the door and went in. The teacher was surprised on seeing him. “Why here Raghu, so early in the morning?” he asked. I have some papers looking like documents. Please read them for me. They are in English and belong to my master Sheth. He left them inadvertently outside. I have to put them back. The teacher read the pages attentively. Then he said “This is your master Rustamji’s will. It has been written only last week. Sheth has written here that he had now become old and did not know how long he would live. In the event of his death, his house should go to his brother’s son. Raghu would have the two storied smaller house in the native village. He has appointed an advocate as the executor of his will. Sheth has mentioned here that he has inherited some of his mother’s gold jewellery and ornaments weighing about 500 gms. The jewellery shall remain in the advocate’s custody till Raghu’s daughter Lata who is now 15 years, attains the age of 18 or gets married. He will then handover the jewellery to her. This is Grandpa Rustam Sheth’s gift to little Lata. The teacher folded the papers neatly and handed them back to Raghu. Raghu’s hand was trembling as he took the papers. Putting them in the envelope, he quickly came out into the street. The teacher’s house was only five minutes’ walk from his house but today he felt it was several miles. Innumerable thoughts crossed his mind as he trudged back home. He thought “I am such a mean fellow. My master kept the ornaments to give to my daughter as her wedding gift and I stole them. This is not a theft of master’s jewellery. My daughter was going to get them after some time. So, I had in reality stolen my daughter’s ornaments.” UPAHAAR 2021 উপহার ১৪২৮ 14

On getting back home, he quietly placed the papers and the ornaments in the locker of the safe and cried a lot in his room. His master returned on the third day. On arrival he asked Raghu to bring him a cup of hot tea. Raghu brought the master his tea and sat on the floor beside the master’s chair. He cried profusely holding his master’s feet. Sheth was taken aback. He asked Raghu “What is wrong with you? Anything serious? Anybody ill? “Raghu could not utter anything. Then he lowered his head and answered softly “Master, please forgive me. I was going to commit a blunder but was saved just at the eleventh hour. Please bless me so that I can remain in your service till the last days of my life.” UPAHAAR 2021 উপহার ১৪২৮ 15

Amazing Alaska Asish Mukherjee It was 11.15 on a beautiful August night when we stepped out of Anchorage airport and hailed a cab. Our motley group consisted of two preteen children, their young parents Moon and Jit, and me and my wife Su who were older. We enjoy travelling together and had felt that a trip to remote Alaska would be a welcome break to our COVID-ruled daily lives. Aishani, the 10-year-old youngest member of our group blurted out in surprise, “I thought we were going to the Arctic area, this is no different from Michigan!” Truly, we had expected Alaska to be a wilderness where Eskimos live in igloos and wear animal hides to fight the bitter cold. Anchorage seemed no different from any mainstream American City as the taxi sped down a four-lane highway. The air was pristine, and the sky was sprinkled with stars. In the distance we could see silhouettes of rolling mountains that rose above the horizon and seemed to cradle this pretty valley. Soon we were in downtown. The roads were dotted with restaurants, stores and hotels. Familiar names like Marriott, McDonalds, and Dunkin Donuts were all around. We arrived at our destination Anchorage-Hilton and were shocked to see at least 20 persons, mostly airlines staff standing in a long line to check in. There was only one desk open. It was obvious that the evils of staff shortage have not spared this Shangri La. All on a sudden our phones sounded alerts and we were pleasantly surprised to see that the hotel app had activated electronic keys for our rooms. Thanking modern science after all, we took the elevator and hit our beds. As the first rays of the morning sun trickled through the curtains, I ran to the window. The still glassy surface of the bay lay still in the soft light of dawn, fringed by long mountain ranges. We soon finished our breakfast and headed towards the famous coastal trail. “No dear”, I had to admit ignorance. “He was the seventh governor of Alaska. And this trail is named after him” The Tony Knowles Coastal Trail follows the shore from downtown Anchorage to Kincaid Park. Running along coastal marshes, over forested hills, and passing one of the most dramatically altered landscapes of Anchorage – the Earthquake Park., the trail is perfect for biking, walking, and even wildlife viewing. Our starting point was marked with a sign “0 Mile, total length 11 miles, much to the chagrin of my wife Su who best enjoys her vacations, curled up in a hammock. The trail was a vantage point for great views of Mount Susitna, also known as Sleeping Lady. It was a clear, balmy autumn day with temperature in mid 50s, and we could see the snow-covered Denali loom on the horizon. As we trudged along, we started appreciating the benches along the way, but unfortunately, the only bathroom facilities were in the wild. Denali Across the Bay After 6 miles, we reached the site of the worst damage from the 1964 earthquake. This point is known as Earthquake Park. It was already past noon, and we decided to call for a cab to return to our hotel. Dinner that evening was at the famed seafood restaurant – Simon and Seaforts. We had no trouble finding our way on foot, as the downtown area was set in a grid with rational numbering. The service and ambience at the restaurant were exceptional and their Halibut dishes were out of the world! Simon and Seafort For the next day we had booked a global private tour service called “Tours by Locals”. This way we planned to dodge the dreaded virus and enjoy a customized trip. Jason was a very pleasant and energetic driver. He took us in his comfortable Ford Expedition down Seward Highway. This 127-mile-long highway is highly esteemed for its scenic, natural, historical, and recreational values. The first 50 miles stretch southeast from Anchorage skirting the base of the Chugach Mountains and the shore of Turnagain Arm. In about an hour, we reached a rocky promontory called Beluga Point where it's common to sight beluga whales. UPAHAAR 2021 উপহার ১৪২৮ 17

Aishani, our youngest traveler was quick to ask, “Uncle, what is Beluga? Aarit, an avid reader lost no time in scoring over his younger sister. “Beluga refers to a type of whale which are relatively small, often measuring less than 16 feet. Younger whales look blue-gray in color and then turn white by age five or six. Belugas are the only all-white whale”. We were lucky enough to catch tiny glimpses of the white whales, raising their brows momentarily through the glacial silt like shooting stars in a turquoise sky. We drove another half hour and came to the quaint town of Girdwood. The main attraction here is Aleyska resort. Set amidst lush mountains, this area has many hiking trails and summerhouses of rich Alaskans. Mount Alyeska is part of the Chugach mountain range and the Alyeska Resort is the largest ski area in the state. This resort has several transporting systems to take travelers up towards the mountaintop. Of these, only the aerial tram was in operation this season due to COVID related issues. We took the ride and were blessed with a heavenly vista of the wide valley below. Now we had to rush as we had a cruise booked in Portage Lake at noon. Our driver valiantly sped along the winding road while casting disapproving looks at us for not keeping on time. The 144passenger boat MV Ptarmigan was blowing its horn as we ran down the jetty to its ramp. Portage Glacier On the cruise, we came to experience the stark, breathtaking face of a mighty Alaska glacier located within a couple of hours from Anchorage. During the cruise we came within 300 yards from this relic of the Ice Age. The elderly narrator made a brave effort to educate the passengers on the glacier, but we were too engrossed in the immediate visual delight. From Portage, the highway veered sharp south and coursed through the mountains, offering dramatic views of wild Alaska. We reached the precincts of Seward in another 2 hours. Before entering the town, we deviated to a branching road towards Exit Glacier. “Hello”, said Aishani, “will anyone tell me who made up these crazy names? “Hey Aishani, this glacier earned its name when mountaineers first crossing the Harding Icefield “exited” the ice at this Glacier. The 8-day journey took place in the spring of 1968, beginning in Homer and ending in Seward. With 700 square miles of ice, the Harding Icefield is the largest one in United States and one of four in the entire country”. We took a steep 2.2 miles’ hike to a vantage point. Su started screaming that her heart and limbs will be at severe risk, but jovial Jason told her with an encouraging smile that her limbs have grown stronger already with the day’s activities. Moon, always helping others, found her a tree branch she could lean on as a cane. Signs along the trail dating back to 1800s, mark the extent of the glacier at various years. They clearly show the effect of climate change on glacial recession. Seward is a picturesque port city which is also a harbor for cruise ships. It is situated at the head of Resurrection Bay on the Kenai Peninsula which is famous for fjords. The historic downtown district is known for its charming shops and restaurants. We basked in the gentle sun and enjoyed views of the brilliant blue waters. We voted against dining at the overcrowded restaurants from fear of COVID, and started back. The drive to Anchorage was uneventful, and everyone felt tired. The driver appeared upset that we did not have dinner and kept munching on health bars to express his distress. The following morning, we took a flight to Fairbanks in Northern Alaska. On the way, the plane flew over snowclad peaks of Denali mountains. The captain of the aircraft swooped down really close to the peaks of the range and swerved to each by turn, to give passengers a close-up view. The view was stunning, but the proximity was a bit daunting. Aishani was a somewhat scared and snuggled up to his father Jit for assurance. Jit asked Aarit what these mountains were called. Exit Glacier near Seward, AK Aarit as usual, had done his homework.“This range was called Mount McKinley in the past, but the name was changed to Denali by local demand”. “What does Denali mean?’ asked Aishani. “It is derived from the word Deenaalee which in Koyukon language means the “high one”, Aarit had the answer. “Who is Koyukun?’ “The Koyukon are a people of Athabaskans Indians who live north of the mountain. The name was changed by Obama administration unilaterally against the will of Congress in 2015. And by the way, it is the tallest mountain in North America with an elevation of 20,310 feet. The name of the national park was also similarly changed but that was in 1980”. At Fairbanks Airport, we rented a minivan, grabbed an unpretentious lunch at Starbucks and started on our way to Denali Park. Aerial view of Denali Mountains In two hours, we reached our destination. The McKinley Chalet Resort turned out to be an upscale facility with Swiss style chalet type buildings connected by paved roads. Despite its sprawling setup with over 450 rooms, the woody surroundings gave the feel of seclusion and intimacy. We were assigned rooms in a building called Ridgeview. Each room had a private balcony looking out on spruce trees and gurgling brooks. The woody landscape with numerous Willows, Ferns, shrubs, and twittering birds was like a gentle symphony playing on our jaded senses. We had some snacks and headed out for dinner. Across the way, we came into Denali Square which had a collection of stores and eateries, and a central open amphitheater, The only restaurant that was open this season was Karsten’s Public house named after the man who led the first expedition of Denali. It was famous for craft brews and authentic Alaska comfort foods. Outside seating was in the amphitheater with gas fueled firepits and a performer singing John Denver numbers. memorable dinners we have ever had. The fragrant air, the fresh food, the glow of the fireside, and the lilting lyrics of Rocky Mountain High spun unreal charm for a few hours. Next morning, we took the much acclaimed Tundra Wilderness tour. The 6 million acres Denali Park has only a gravel road inside it where private cars are not allowed. Only travelers taking organized tours can experience the sights and sounds. The trip was conducted by a naturalist guide cum driver with full narration. We stopped at several points that afforded good photo opportunities. Unfortunately, the tour was truncated from its scheduled 8.5 hours to only 4.5 hours as a landslide had closed part of the Park Road. We had planned the following day to be pinnacle of our Alaska experience, and it turned out that way indeed. We left very early and drove to the airport in our rented van. We reported to the office of Northern Alaska Tour Company for a fly-drive tour beyond the Arctic Circle. We were checked onto a ten-seater plane and our bags were stuffed into its small hollow wings. A bold blue and white sign proclaimed this toy aircraft to be part of Arctic Airways. The pilot in his stentorian voice cried out a seat to each passenger based on his presumed body weight. Next, he handed out a pair of headphones to protect our ears from the engine noise and to be able to hear his instructions. Denali Park With a beating heart, we took off. The plane remained very steady and soon we could see the mighty Yukon River, and the legendary Alaska Pipeline on the ground. Aishani was surprised. “How can people live by choice in such a desolate area with little communication to mainland, Uncle, and why is it called Stevens?” Before I could open my mouth Aarit answered, “the village is named for its first chief, Skidedlestalk known as Old Steven. The population was 78 at the 2010 census”. In about one and half hours we touched down at Coldfoot, located north of the Arctic Circle in the Brooks Mountain Range. This time Jit took the lead and gave us some information, “Guys we are now roughly 174 miles northwards into the 414-mile Dalton Highway. In 2010 census, Coldfoot had only 10 residents. It is said that the place got its name in 1900, when gold seekers made it this far, got cold feet, and turned around. Today it serves as the northernmost truck stop in United States. It has a rustic inn, a dilapidated café, an airstrip and a gas station”. We enjoyed our preordered lunches of sandwich and soda and bought some souvenirs. The low hills surrounding this lonely spot gave it a forlorn beauty.After we had rested and looked around, we started on the southbound tour back towards Fairbanks in a van. Now we were travelling along Dalton Highway which is one of Alaska’s most remote and challenging roads. Media claims it to be one of the most dangerous roads in the world, but I can assure you it is much better that many I have seen in other countries. Because of the underlying permafrost, the road could

Aishani who did not want to be superseded by his brother’s knowledge, now exclaimed, “hey do you know this road is often called the Haul Road because it’s mostly used by truckers moving cargo between the oil fields of Prudhoe Bay and Fairbanks. It is considered dangerous because of the fast trucks and potholes. And by the way, Prudhoe Bay is at the Arctic Ocean about 240 miles north.” Soon we stopped at the remarkable Trans-Alaska Pipeline. This is an engineering feat. Trans-Alaska Pipeline connects the oil fields of Prudhoe Bay in northern Alaska, with the harbor at Valdez, 800 miles to the south and has a diameter of 48 inches. It is the world's largest privately funded construction project built at a cost of $8 billion. It was built between 1975 and 1977, after the 1973 oil crisis when members of OPEC proclaimed an oil embargo for nations perceived as supporting Israel. We reached the Arctic Circle in ceremonious fashion and received an official Arctic Circle Adventure Certificate. This was at 66 degrees 33 minutes latitude. There was a signpost proclaiming the remarkable location, but it seemed rather mundane in this warm weather. Our next stop was at the shores of the mighty Yukon River, where we had burger and fries. After a brief halt, we drove down to a city called Joy near the Arctic Circle Trading Post. This is a designated spot for scanning the darkened skies for the Aurora. The location is 60 miles north of Fairbanks. Jit was quick to set up his fancy Nikon camera on a tripod outside the log hut where we stopped. The hut had wood burning fireplace and a variety pf warm drinks like coffee and cider. Soon we saw that a dozen other travelers had set up their cameras and were gazing through their lenses at the dark Alaskan sky. Unfortunately, the sky was overcast with clouds and not a single star could be seen. We waited a couple of hours, but no aurora display was visible. at about 1.30 am. The day had been long, and our stomachs were full. The gentle tumbling of the wheels of our primitive vehicle on the gravel laden, pothole infested highway soon put us to sleep. We woke up with a start at about 2 am, with the driver screaming to us to get out of the bus. We thought we were on fire, so we all rushed out. We stood in a grassy clearing in the middle of a desolate landscape. What we saw when we looked up changed our lives forever. We saw flickering green flames playing across the wide skies like tongues of celestial torch lighting the way to heaven’s pearly gates. We felt like puny terrestrial creatures who have suddenly been granted access to the Creator’s universe. Our lives, our strifes, and our ambitions seemed to have reached fulfillment. I wanted to sing, like Tagore “I hear Your music chanting Your name throughout the skies and the stars”. We checked in at a riverside resort in Fairbanks Chena Tribal Village in the early morning and had a good long sleep. We rested that day and took a boat cruise. The stately Discovery III boat had three decks with comfortable indoor seating, and a fourth top deck that was open-air. The large paddlewheel propelled the boat on its journey down the Chena River. The first demo was a bush plane on floats taking off alongside the boat, and banking in a long arc downstream. The next stop was an exuberant sled dog demo at the riverside kennels. Upon reaching the confluence of the Chena and Tanana Rivers, we disembarked for a walking tour of a Chena Indian Village. Native Alaskan guides led groups to see spruce cabins, smokehouses, and crafts created by Athabascans natives. Ancient India, Humanism, and Tagore Pradipta Chatterji Vestal, NY Stories of kings and queens are a universal attraction for young children as they offer feelings of adventures, and excitement that does not happen in daily lives. Such stories also teach the first moral lesson that good always wins over evil. In our childhood, we loved reading such stories, as we only had paper-books, friends, and radio to entertain us. It was long before Internet and other related technologies for learning and entertainment. My favorite stories were the glorified tales of kings and queens, and their wonderful lives. In the books the kings were always conquering lands and expanding their empires. However, there were no detailed mention of the obvious bloodsheds and violence that were involved, as those stories written for young children. A few years later some of these stories appeared in more elaborated manners in the history texts in primary and secondary schools. One may wonder at that time, why was empire -building considered so prestigious back then, didn’t it involve needless bloodsheds and brutality? I had a sigh of relief when I came across king Asoka and discovered that there were exceptions also, and every leader did not prefer cruelty, and there were many kings who promoted welfare, equity, and safety for their people. A child’s mind always remembers its first moral lessons and wants to see righteousness to win over vice at the end of the stories. However, there were kings who even ruled much earlier than king Ashoka who denounced fighting while at the pinnacle of their fame and pursued peace and equity. These kings left their legacy which enriched the future generations. Today’s story is about such an emperor of ancient India whose principles and work left their impressions on the art, culture and literature of India for thousands of years… Our knowledge of ancient India is based on fables and mysteries. The tales of many Indian maharajahs are possibly mythical as their existence cannot be confirmed with archaeological evidence. The historical authenticity of different Indian kings can be verified with some certainty from the regime of a monarch called Bimbisara ( reigned from 545 BCE to 493 BCE approximately), who was the sovereign of the Magadha Empire. Around the time of Bimbisara, the Indian subcontinent was composing of two major political groups, the Mahajanapadas and the Janapadas. Mahajanapadas were the greater kingdoms. Some were republics governed by a panel, while others were monarchies ruled by a dynasty. Back then the focus of Indian civilization was moving from the northwest to the eastern and central zones with four great Mahajanapads on the rise there - Kosala,( corresponds to the modern-day Uttar Pradesh state of India), Avanti (roughly present-day, Madhya Pradesh), Vatsa (some part of present-day Uttar Pradesh ,) and finally Magadha (ancient Magadha Empire roughly corresponds to the present-day state of Bihar, Jharkhand, some parts of West Bengal, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, and the countries of Nepal and Bangladesh). Bimbisar was a powerful king and an able military general, wielding imperial dominance over the Indian subcontinent. However, his kingdom was not strong enough to conquer substantial empires like Koshala and Vaishali. So, he chose a bloodless way out by setting up matrimonial alliances with Koshala and Vaishali. King Bimbisar was a contemporary of Lord Buddha However with time the shrewd and power loving king was attracted towards the principles of Buddhism and took refuge at Buddha’s feet. He preferred Buddhist principles of egalitarianism than empire building. King Bimbisar became an avowed Buddhist and practiced and propagated Buddhism all his life. He is also known for his cultural achievements in the city of Rajagriha, which is modern Rajgir in the state of Bihar, famous in Buddhist writings. Then things changed, Bimbisar’s son Ajatashatru denounced Buddhist principles of nonviolence and was misguided by peers who persuaded Ajatashatru to usurp the throne through a coup. There are varied adaptations of the legends available in Jain and Buddhist documents, about the tragic end of king Bimbisara. Some say when Ajatshatru overtook the throne, he imprisoned his father Bimbisar and finally assassinated him. Others believe, Bimbisar took his own life due to fear of being killed at his son’s hands. It seems after his father’s death Ajatshatru reconsidered and supported Buddhism. Long before we learned all the above from history texts, and Wikipedia, Rabindranath Tagore, the first nonEuropean Nobel Laureate in literature, introduced King Bimbisar and his dedication to Lord Buddha through his unforgettable poems to most of us in our adolescent years. A self-confessed disciple of Gautam Buddha, Tagore was a believer and a worshipper of humankind, and had strong admirations for Buddha and his humanitarian doctrines. The enlightened and humane attributes of Lord Buddha’s ideologies ignited the spiritual visions in Tagore. Tagore considered the principle of egalitarianism found in Buddhist philosophy particularly appealing to his own concept of spirituality in man and acclaimed the immortal qualities of Buddhism through his literary work. Lord Buddha advocated the principles of universal love 2,500 years ago and passed down the message to his disciples. Tagore had similar missions in his heart when he travelled all over the world and declared with all the emphasis his reverence for one of the greatest preachers, Buddha through his writings. composed poetry and dance dramas based on Buddhist stories, and glorified the immortal qualities of Buddhism through his literary creations like, Malini, Chandalika, and Natir Puja. Natir Puja is a story based on the famous poem by Tagore Pujarini(The Worshipper). Both tales focused on Sreemati, who was a dancing girl. In the poem Pujarini, the story relates that Ajatasatru usurped the throne from his father Bimbisar, denounced Buddhism and restricted , on the pain of death, any kind of worship except that of the Vedas, Brahmins, and Kings. The only person to ignore his order was Sreemati, a mere court dancer but an ardent Buddhist at heart. She continued to worship Buddha against the advice of the Queen and other members of the royal household Sreemati was excuted by the royal guards in the early evening when she places her offerings at the Buddhist Stupa near the palace and lights the lamps at the stupa. Tagore's dance drama has played out beautifully to bring out a historical aspect of the Indian culture. The story of Bimbisar and his son Ajatsatru may not have been represented the way history records it, but the tale certainly brings out the tension and the hostility that poison the world at every age. The glory of renunciation illustrated in Tagore’s verses inspired by the ideal of Lord Buddha has no parallel in world literature. Sreemati was merely a court dancer, but her dedication and sacrifice for her devotion to Lord Buddha and his humanitarian principles made her immortal in Tagore’s liIn Natir Puja, Sreemati shows that for faith and truth one should be ready to offer the highest price, one's own life if necessary. In the story of Natir Puja also Sreemati ‘s , position in the society as a court-dancer was low. Even Sreemati considers herself unworthy of even attending the words of Buddha. But her humility reflects one of the core ideals of Buddhism and she is honored by the Buddhist monks as they invite her to perform the rituals of a priestess before the altar of Buddha. Buddhism is a faith that nullifies class and caste system. Srimati accepts the royal order of dancing before the altar, but she succeeds in revealing herself as a devout follower of Buddha and embraces death. UPAHAAR 2021 উপহার ১৪২৮ 28

The play was first staged at the Jorsanko Thakurbari in 1927. At the end of 1931, Tagore brought the stage production to Calcutta, where B. N. Sircar, an Indian film producer and the founder of New Theatres Calcutta, invited Tagore to transform the play into a film. Tagore agreed, and the 1932 film, Natir Puja, is now recognised as the only film in which Rabindranath Tagore is credited as the director. Quest of Ambrosia Aniruddha Bose T hursday, 4th July. American Independence Day! Nandini couldn’t ever forget that hapless day. “Boston” she recalled Arnab’s smiling face “To deliver a ship. Maybe we could take a trip to the Niagara Falls” “How long?” “Not long. A flight to Niagara and back” Nandini was thrilled at the idea of likely break from dreary chores. Except for her painting interest, she hardly had a flue. This was not the first she was out at sea with Arnab. It was fine for a few days. But a longer journey was boring. Aneesh, only seven, was ecstatic. After finishing his errands, Arnab said “Off to Niagara” Niagara fitted their interests – Nandini’s painting and Arnab’s photography. Aneesh jumped in glee “Exciting” Ought to be. So was Nandini and Arnab. She woke early on Thursday morn to finish the last bit of packing with the extras Arnab had dumped the last moment “Don’t forget my camera. Shove it in the side bag” Arnab reminded her. “Leave it to me” she grinned stepping into the shower to release her mind from the domestic chores. A three-hour flight from Boston to Buffalo, losing a couple in jet lag, they reached Buffalo at 2:30 PM. “Get one with GPS” Nandini reminded Arnab as he advanced towards the Hertz Car Rental. “All have one here” Arnab reassured. Aneesh settled at the rear seat was peckish “I’m starving. Can I have some nut-nuggets please?” “Yes…but no soda” Arnab settled on the wheels to check the controls. A twenty-minute drive took them to the hotel beside the highway overlooking a grandee lake. As Nandini gaped at the breath-taking landscape, where the firmament kissed the acreage, she was swept by a strange feeling of frailty. Aneesh was over-excited of the imminent helicopter ride over the falls next day. It was the first for all of them. After weighing in, they boarded the copter. Aneesh nervous, clung to mom while gazing out. Arnab seated beside the pilot beamed as he fitted the zoom “We’re closer to heaven” They were enthralled as the copter circled the falls. Arnab sighed at the lifetime dream, blossom into reality. Spellbound Nandini too was lost in the grandeur of the mist and rainbow frisking over the falls. Nature at its pristine best. “What’s the colour of water? Grey? Blue? Or white?” “Blue” Aneesh promptly replied. Arnab was continuously clicking every frame before catching on the next. He would click each and everything he fancied – beggars, rain-drenched Esplanade, to dewdrops on a leaf. Nature was his forte. Piles were stuffed in boxes waiting for a space in the album. Euphoric in glee, he mused ‘Would she kiss me if I jumped off the copter? Could I soar free like the birds? Would she still love me if I didn’t return?’ “Are you OK?” he was back to the senses at the pilot’s gesture. “Fine” “We’re going down. Riveted Aneesh flooded Nandini with a volley of questions. We’d be out in the evening to see the fireworks” “Want to click a few more while you laze” Arnab had a strange feel of unease. He walked out, leaving them to their afternoon siesta. Nandini hit the bed sheet, hoping to grab an hour’s catnap. Arnab could feel the azure alluring him to the orgasmic blue. She posted in Facebook, the vista of the blue turning dusty grey, merging into the dark. This is the jingle of life. It reveals in dappled awnings, slopping horde of colours on an empty canvas, with its unique verve of veiled dreams in its sheath. The beauty is amid the trusses and verges of life in varied shades, until the demon leers with snooty jape. “Are you a dreamer?” someone remarked. “Why?” “The setting airs your illusory brush” without realising she had tried to bring forth her reality. “Why do you say?” "The colours are wacky” If the order of the spectrum didn’t follow a defined range, which colour could illustrate the soul of her fictional image? Violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange or red? He was in quest of the myth of a vivid spectre. He was taught to applaud the tailored concept. But the realism lay far beyond the myopic visibility, into the aura of fallow canopies. Maybe she had to wait for that piercing awareness, amid the lonely twilight, onto the cuddle of sleepless nights. She strode through the snug rims of the dusty alleys, in quest of her destiny. Credit card Sushovita Mukherjee. Maumee, OH I t was not too long ago. Or I thought that way. But then 30 years have gone by like a fleeting second. I had been recently married and was preparing to live India with my husband for UK to pursue higher studies and training. It was a time of laughter, carefreeness and craziness. I had lived under the wings of a happy and tight knit family where my only responsibility in the house was to wake up in the morning. Ma was worried, how I should mange my affairs abroad with no one to guide me. Baba was sad. I was his companion to the theaters and movies at the Academy and pandal hopping during the Pujas. Thakuma was restless too. “Don’t eat any meat there” she advised. To her, the West was weird, and people ate demons. She reminded Ma to pack a fool jharu and shil nora in my suitcase. She was convinced that no housewife could ace her role without these grand pieces of equipment. Only Boro Jethu, who was erudite and scholarly, was optimistic. Don’t forget to snap a picture of yourself in front of the British parliament and send it to me, he said. An octogenarian at that point of time, he read Chaucer and Shakespeare till the wee hours of the morning much to the chagrin of my Boro Jethima. She would drag me to the corner and whisper “ekei bole ghorer kheye boner mosh tarano”. Ma was worried a lot about my lack of winter clothes and proper attire. She made many trips to the French Tailors on Chowringhee and after reviewing catalogs decided on some dresses and coats. Needless to say, they were full of frills, laces and buttons and I looked like a nineteenth century fashionista. The only contradiction to my Ma’s grooming efforts was my facial expression. I had that helpless look that is so common among women raised in protective Bengali family At last the eventful day arrived. My entire family had turned up at the airport to see me off. Everyone had some advice for us. I could see my Baba’s eyes were moist. He gently whispered in my ears “Come back soon! After all this is your homeland, this is where you belong” Those sentiments fell on deaf ears. I was too anxious to take off. We landed at London’s Heathrow and a taxi ferried us to Ipswich, a small in East Anglia and about an hour’s drive from London. As I entered the store, I was greeted by a mannequin decked up in crispy clothes. The store was humongous! Middle aged ladies were jostling in the aisles looking for their finds. I too searched for some pretty outfits. Finally, I found a couple of stylish dresses and headed to the checkout counter. The cashier smiled at me. I smiled but not making any eye contact, as I had a feeling of guilt that I only had a piece of plastic to offer as payment. Really! Was that meant for me? I rolled my eyes and gulped air. The cashier drew my attention again. “And how do you intend to pay Ma’am, cash or card?” He asked My voice trembled like I had delirium tremens! CA- ca-Ca , I said, my voice barely audible and handed him the card. He put it on a machine and slid a roller over it, and magically my card details got imprinted in a voucher. As he started folding the clothes I was about to jump and dance around and was barely able to hold myself. As I stepped outside the store holding my shopping bag proudly, I threw my fist in the air and shouted, “Mission successful Sue!” Next day, armed with my magic card, I walked to the nearest Co-Op Food store on Foxhall Road. As I entered the store, the automatic doors amused me. It was quite crowded with Sunday shoppers. I negotiated my way through the aisles with a trolley and headed to the produce section. I picked the fresh and colorful vegetables and fruits up one by one. Very soon my cart was half full. Soon I realized all is not well at the next aisle. Two groups of people had collided and at the epicenter of this were two ladies who had ducked under each other to grab a bag of cat food from the top shelf that was on sale. I skirted the melee and rolled my cart to the frozen section to look for ice-creams and peas. I grabbed a bag that looked like peas but was not quite like it. As I gazed at it, unsure whether to put it in my cart, a voice whispered in my ear “These are the petit pois! French for the “little Peas” As I looked over my shoulder, I saw an old smiling lady with glasses dangling on the bridge of her nose. “Try them”, she said. They are just as good. She patted my shoulder and wheeled her cart away. Slowly I made my way towards the cashier. About 4-6 people were in line and ahead of me. I patiently waited, feeling nervous as I did not have enough cash. What if the card did not work? Will they take my groceries back? I wondered. As I loaded my groceries on the moving belt and handed my card to her, she enquired “ is this a Bank card? “No, it is a card from my husband!” I proudly asserted myself. She smiled. As she started putting them in bags, again asked “Are you parked nearby? I could have someone help you with the shopping bags” “No! I came walking” I thought I have aced her question “Are you sure?” she asked. “You have eight full bags, and the hospital flats are more than a mile away.” She reminded me I was not going to let myself down and before she could talk any more, I grabbed the bags and headed out. I decided to take a shortcut through the park opposite the hospital road and then enter the complex from behind. This was going to be a piece of cake. As I crossed the street, I swayed like a loaded truck trying to negotiate a hairpin bend on top of a mountain. As I entered the park, I dropped the eight bags and sat on a bench to catch my breath. Gosh! weren’t they heavy! I thought perhaps it was a mistake to buy so much. I looked at the cars speeding down the road and wished someone would pick me up. There were no telephone booths nearby to call my husband. As I picked myself up again and started walking, I realized, some of the bags were giving way. Very soon, 3-4 plastic bags ripped apart throwing the contents everywhere. I stared at the mayhem transfixed. Tears welled up in my eyes. In that confusion, I spotted a large tree that was hollowed at at its base. Suddenly a thought flashed in my mind. What if I hide some of the groceries there? No body would know. me in Kolkata. Voila! I cried, sounding like Hercule Poroit. I marveled at my own idea. Very soon, some of the grocery items were neatly placed inside the tree. I walked back home. After about a break of 30 minutes, I decided to return to the park to fetch the rest of the items. As I neared the park, I saw an elderly British gentleman with a pipe and a dog staring curiously at the tree. The dog was barking madly and was off leash going round and round in circles around the tree. Little did I realize that the dog had smelled my chicken and sausage stowed in the tree. As I approached the gentleman, he gave me a not-so-happy look. In fact, he looked irritated. He was mumbling “I have been taking walks in the park for 10 years but never have I seen Archie behave so weird” “I have my groceries inside the tree”, I quipped. “A what?” He roared. I thought he was livid. “I need to call the police.” A police car idling near the hospital, and he waived at it. The car turned around and headed in our direction. My knees were shaking and I started wailing loudly. I was more embarrassed by the fact that once my husband came to know of it, he would think I am silly and take away my magic card. I mustered all my strength and explained the situation to the Officer in one breath. The Officer looked amused. He calmed the gentleman, sent him on his way and turned around and picked up my groceries Hop into my car Sue! I shall give you a ride back home. On our way, we chatted. His name was John. I offered him tea and Indian snacks in my flat. He refused to eat anything as he was on duty. Before leaving, he said, “Call us if ever you need help and pointed to the phone.” I reminded him not to mention the incident to my husband. I was sure he would somehow meet him at the hospital. ‘No, I won’t, he promised and left.” A few weeks went by. One fine morning, I found that somebody had left a big parcel at my front door. When I opened the package, I found a sturdy shopping cart with wheels. It had a small card signed by John that read “Christmas Gift.” Hope you like it” As I look back, I am so glad I had experienced all that craziness and I conclude without redemption that it was one of the best life experiences ever. The Evolution of Parenting Dr. Leslie Mathew Our greatest learnings about our children Early on, we were able to recognize that our son and daughter were very different and unique individuals. Besides variations that could be ascribed to gender, each of them had uniquely distinct personalities – both very lovable. Jeff was the quieter, more shy individual during childhood (much like his father’s formative years) while Anne was the more lively, ever cheerful child, most often the spark in the room (probably resembling my wife’s childhood years). We always tried our level best not to compare the strengths or weaknesses of either child, or with other children, realizing that their personalities were God-given, and it was our role to support the development and maturing of their inner selves. It has been a great joy and pleasure to watch their personalities evolve and grow into being wonderful, responsible adults. Our major challenges in their teen years Conformity to our expectations was the goal for most of their pre-teen years, but we realized soon that it could not easily happen on all fronts. We found this especially challenging during their teenage years. One lesson learned was not to shut them down, or be critical of them, whenever differences over tastes, styles, viewpoints and more were aired. Differences would exist, and they could be discussed, sometimes even celebrated, if I was able to let go of my need to impose my views upon the children, and often extending that to my wife too!! We soon learned to keep communication lines open at all times, without causing a distance to develop, even after a heated or passionate discussion which ended in disagreement. However, when it came to core values that we shared and wanted to develop in the children, we laid down clear expectations, something that is a vital ingredient in their growth and development. Setting reasonable boundaries for them in relation to simple matters like study time or play time, interaction with friends and relatives, or more complex behavioral issues were important to us. For example, it was very clear in our home that the children were also expected to be part of the conversation when friends or relatives visited. Unless specifically requested to do so, the children were not expected to stay aloof in their rooms doing their ‘own thing’ during these visits, even when they may have been much happier to do so. If they had to be studying for an exam the next morning, they would still need to meet the visitors before we excused them, after a reasonable interaction. UPAHAAR 2021 উপহার ১৪২৮ 36

Whenever we sensed a departure from core values that we wanted to build into our children’s lives, we did set up clear expectations that served as boundaries within which the children needed to function. In matters of integrity, respect for others, utilizing opportunities, life-long learning or excellence in behavior, we used life examples before us, even as we tried our best to model these core values to the children ourselves. Such boundaries fail to have much effect if the parents themselves do not display true adherence to core values. A growing child easily understands ‘double speak’ when we say something and do another. The next step in how things would play out seemed to be crucial: holding firmly to these expectations, so that the children understood very clearly that we meant what we said. Evolution of parenting style while going from the teen years to adulthood Besides recognizing that each child was different from the parents and each other, we encouraged some discussions about these differences during their teenage years. While we were probably strongly opinionated with our own views early on, we learned to be more accommodating in listening to them, and trying to appreciate their own positions and viewpoints as they grew out of their teenage years. Rather than be the ‘sage on the stage’ lecturing to them at every opportunity, I sensed a greater appreciation from both of them as I changed more to being a ‘coach’ on their playing field. Handling changing equations as they stepped into adulthood There was a natural tendency to keep persisting in reminding the children of things we used to direct them towards during their childhood, such as the kind of clothes they need to wear, their food habits, or how to protect themselves in changing weather seasons and the like. Once I realized that they were not in tune with our ‘music’, I slowly but surely learned that our repetitions were in vain. Instead, I saw that third party credibility worked much better in the late teenage years, when I could redirect their attention to a similar statement or viewpoint from a celebrity of any other person of repute (or standing ) in their eyes. Much as they had learned a lot of things during their childhood, it was time for us as parents to come to the realization that our grown children did not need us in the same manner, as they did earlier. Another interesting situation that evolved was their greater competence in some areas like technology, where I had to rely on their skills to get past my struggles with newer technologies like a laptop, audiovisual equipment like cameras, projectors, and other modern gadgets. This was indeed a reversal of roles, where I happily accepted being the learner! So, while there are still many areas where the parents experience and wisdom do provide value for the grown children,it is a win-win situation and vital to remember that learning is a two-way street in the context of teenage children growing up to adulthood. Once we accept this as a fact of life, it can be a source of great joy and pride to observe at close quarters the flowering abilities of our once little children! to children in their formative years. Instilling in them the notion that marriage is a life-long commitment can be one of the best foundations for a happy and healthy marriage later in life. This first step on what values to look for could be visualized as a primer coat of paint on which would fall some of their initial experiences and encounters of discovery with the opposite sex. Rather than consider the choice of a life partner as a chance happening, based on sudden emotions or fleeting fancies, we gave them the right perspective that this decision could probably be the most important decision in their adult life. Something that would impact them for the rest of their lives, and posterity too! While it is indeed a blessing to have the support and guidance of parents in choosing a life partner, I believe this would ideally be a decision taken by both the boy and the girl personally. It should never be a parental decision that is imposed on the children. After all, parents will pass on at some point, and it is the couple that has to live out their lives together in love and harmony. This approach also precludes the possibility that marriage partners will blame their parents when things get rough in their own marriage relationship, which is often an easy escape mechanism to avoid taking personal responsibility for improving their relationship. In what way does parenting evolve even further when they get married and have kids? While it is a normal matter for most parents to be proud and possessive of their children, it is crucial for parents to understand that they need to step away from the center of their child’s marriage relationship. The ‘leave and cleave’ principle is the greatest model I have learnt of in how to avoid pitfalls in this area. As adult children get married and form a nuclear family, all involved need to understand a major change in the family relationships. While the parents and all other family members continue to be greatly loved and respected as always, the son’s primary focus and responsibility has to be to his wife and the family he now raises. This new focus demands that a son ‘leaves’ his parents to ‘cleave’ to his wife in the new equation before him. This ‘leaving’ needs to be a conscious, rational decision that involves every aspect of his emotional, physical, mental and spiritual life. Equally vital for the wife to follow this guideline for a happy and healthy marriage. To help their children entering into the new marriage relationship, it is of paramount importance that both sets of parents also understand this wonderful ‘leave and cleave’ principle to ensure marriage success. There are far too many marriages that have been rocked by either set of parents being too closely involved in the marriages of their children, due to ignorance or willful neglect of this fundamental need. I would like to point out in particular that mothers and sons need to take special precaution to see that this principle takes effect, with no hard feelings on either side. Doting mothers are more prone to try and keep as connected to their married sons, but there needs to be a conscious effort to ‘release’ the sons to the new partner in his marriage relationship. Trying to supervise or ‘watch over’ the new couple is not a healthy practice, often leading to greater tensions building up, sometimes causing the new marriage relationship to flounder. Preparing to cope with the empty nest phase As grown children start leaving home to build their own families, there is a most natural sense of vacuum that develops in the home. A deeper sense of loneliness, emptiness or distance can create fears, and insecurities can develop. This will be especially true for mothers who have devoted all of their time in raising kids and being the homemaker, while others may not be hit as hard. One good approach for this empty nest phase is to prepare oneself well ahead of this anticipated time by planning to occupy one’s time with things that could not be done before, due the lack of time or focus earlier. Finding a part-time job to revive old skills, volunteering or starting a new hobby are all great ideas. Ideally, this preparation could start as children become more independent during their teenage years, more so in their college years. My wife sacrificed her career prospects for over 5 years, while we transitioned into life in the U.S., so that she was very close to the children during those years of change and adaptation to local culture, customs and people. She took up a part-time job teaching in a college shortly before our son was ready to graduate from college, and our daughter close to finishing high school. Advice to parents of young adults I think it would be reasonable to say that our experiences could have been somewhat different, given circumstances and events. While some principles in parenting can be applied across different contexts, socio-cultural and economic, it would be unfair to others to think that these insights could be generalized to be of application to all and sundry. Based on what worked for us, our advice would be: • Keep communication lines open: differences can be discussed and even celebrated, not causing distance. • Have clear expectations, holding firmly, dealing gently. • Be aware of generational changes – tastes, communication methods etc. • Be available to them. Involved as needed. • Consider them as adults, with differing personalities. Leave room for self-expression and growth. • Offer opinions or advice as needed and not imposed. • Pray and model your behavior through your relationship with your own parents.
