The play was first staged at the Jorsanko Thakurbari in 1927. At the end of 1931, Tagore brought the stage production to Calcutta, where B. N. Sircar, an Indian film producer and the founder of New Theatres Calcutta, invited Tagore to transform the play into a film. Tagore agreed, and the 1932 film, Natir Puja, is now recognised as the only film in which Rabindranath Tagore is credited as the director. Sadly the film was destroyed in a fire at the New Theatres studio.
