With the first day of Fall on September 23 let's hope cooler temperatures are on the horizon. Residents are encouraged to be safe during this time of record high temperatures in the area. Take advantage of the many indoor activities and amenities available and when enjoying outdoor activities please stay hydrated and wear sunscreen to stay safe. The Clubhouse facility staff has been busy this summer! The Shuffleboard Court has received a face lift with new lighting and seamless gutters. The Pool and Spa were opened on August 11 after an extensive refurbishment project (more details on page 12). Now they are working on completing a large indoor amenity refurbishment project. The Media Center, Card Room, Bowling Alley and Club Office are all receiving new flooring. The Media Center and Card Room are switching locations and receiving new paint, furnishings and decor in addition to new flooring. Staff is excited for residents to see the changes. Stay tuned to email blasts announcing the opening of the rooms that are being refurbished. Thank you to our amazing Facility Maintenance Team (Matt, Alex, and Joe) for all of their hard work on these projects. We are lucky to have them as part of our team. The Board of Supervisors met on August 21 to formally adopt the fiscal year 2024 budget in addition to the following: • The budget was approved with an Operations and Maintenance (O&M) assessment increase of $100. The O&M fee for Lake Wales residents will be $2,369 for this coming year and will be included in the non-ad valorem tax section of your property tax bill. • Supervisors also approved an extensive upgrade to the current security services at Lake Ashton. New entrance gate and amenity access systems and the credentials to go with it in addition to an upgraded camera monitoring system were approved. Educational documents and presentations are forthcoming. • A repair to stormwater curbing on Ventana was approved. • A quote was approved to install an additional new grease trap and replacement of the current grease trap for the Restaurant per City of Lake Wales requirements. Staff was able to save approximately $40,000 on this project by utilizing a local vendor. • Soon residents will see new plantings at the Thompson Nursery Road entrance and in front of the Clubhouse. The Garden Club has been instrumental in assisting with these projects. Staff and Supervisors would like to thank them for their efforts. • Contracts for landscape maintenance, aquatic management, and security services were approved for extension. 6

Host a block party, invite neighbors over for a BBQ, help a neighbor with a project, or go for a walk around your neighborhood. Be the good neighbor. Because, good neighbors make great neighborhoods. Originally, National Good Neighbor Day was created in the early 1970s by Becky Mattson of Lakeside, Montana. In 1978. United States President Jimmy Carter issued Proclamation 4601: “As our Nation struggles to build friendship among the peoples of this world, we are mindful that the noblest human concern is concern for others. Understanding, love and respect build cohesive families and communities. The same bonds cement our Nation and the nations of the world. For most of us, this sense of community is nurtured and expressed in our neighborhoods where we give each other an opportunity to share and feel part of a larger family…I call upon the people of the United States and interested groups and organizations to observe such day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.” In 2003, National Good Neighbor Day was changed from the fourth Sunday in September to September 28. RESERVING FACILITIES Amenity Facilities are available on a “first come, first served basis”, and subject to applicable fees or rates as set by the appropriate District. Requests to reserve facilities should be submitted through the Staff at the appropriate Amenity Facility. With the exception of designated Open Play (as defined in Section X – Amenity Policies – General Usage), reservations may be available for up to two (2) hour increments for all facilities listed in this policy, with the exception of the Clubhouse Ballroom and HFC 8 Community Center. These can be reserved for periods up to four (4) hours. Longer time increments may be approved by the Amenity Manager. Amenities that have not been reserved are available for use on a “first come, first served” basis. There are no personal standing weekly reservations allowed for the Amenity Facilities listed in the reservation policies. Lake Ashton activities taking place within the Amenity Facilities should be open to all Lake Ashton residents and not be labeled as “private”. If the room is not reserved by a club, group or organization, tables may be individually reserved, with the understanding that the Amenity Manager may move or cancel reservations, if required, up to 48 hours prior to the reservation time. Clubs, Groups, and Organizations may make “standing” reservations. These will be reviewed semi-annually by the Amenity Manager. (Refer to section IX on what constitutes a club.) If a standing reservation made by a registered Club, Group, or Organization is cancelled or unused more than three (3) times in a six (6)-month period then the reservation may be revoked by the Amenity Manager. This does not apply to a Club, Group, or Organization going on a planned hiatus previously arranged with Staff. Reservations for commercial or profit-making purposes will be charged a fee in accordance with LA CDD and LAII CDD Chapter III: Rules for Amenities Rates, (respectively). The Amenity Manager can reschedule any reservation if requested by the District. The Clubhouse or HFC must be notified if a scheduled reservation cannot be kept so the slot may be re-assigned. Reservations will be held for fifteen (15) minutes past the scheduled start time, after which the Amenity Manager may re-assign the reservation. L.A. LOOKS FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT RETENTION PONDS DURING SUMMER MONTHS Why is the algae in my pond not being treated? Lake Ashton CDD staff works closely with our aquatics contractor to ensure all treatments are being completed. During the summer months algae are fueled from the warm waters, sunny days, and large amounts of rain. Rain allows for “runoff” to seep into the ponds which provide food for unwanted plants, like algae. The aquatics technician is allowed to treat the ponds with approved chemicals and the frequency is determined by Southwest Florida Water Management District. This frequency is every 2 weeks. My pond is full will there be flooding if we have a hurricane? Each pond Lake Ashton CDD owns is designed to prevent flooding. Residents may notice a concrete structure in their pond. This man-made concrete structure is called an outfall structure. This is the discharge point for stormwater that prevents flooding and overflowing. Are algae blooms harmful? Algae are a natural component of the aquatic food chain and are not typically harmful to people. When will my pond begin to look better? The Fall and Winter months help substantially in reducing algae blooms. Cooler weather and less rain make pond conditions less desirable for algae to thrive. Central Native Plants of Florida By Lynn Davis Blue Porterweed is a low-growing sprawling wildflower. It reaches 1 to 3 feet tall and spreads approximately 2 to 3 feet. It is a fast grower (grows like a weed), thus the name! It works well as a groundcover, but also can be used in containers. The plant prefers full sun and yet it can handle some shade. Well drained sandy soil and clay are best. It will perform in poor soil too. Pruning it in Spring will help with its growth and promote a bushy plant. Why plant Blue Porterweed in your yard? This plant is drought tolerant! It is a wonderful addition for a butterfly garden. You’ll enjoy watching for hummingbirds, butterflies and other pollinators. Besides being an easy care, the plant is edible to humans. Most people use it like you would a bay leaf in sauces and stews. Some describe the taste much like a mushroom. Once you get over the name, this beauty will win you over. Make sure to check out this plant at the side of the Pavilion in the Garden Club’s Native Plant area. OUTDOOR POOL & SPA REFURBISHMENT PROJECT The Pool and Spa reopened at 7 am on August 11. Thank you for your patience during this refurbishment project and we are happy to see residents enjoying this newly refurbished area. Below are several items included in the refurbishment project: • Resurfacing of the Pool and Spa • Replacement of all tile in the Pool and Spa • Replacement of all non-LED lights in the Pool with LED lights • Adding an additional handrail on each entrance to the Pool • Replacement of the coping stones on the outside border of the Pool and Spa • Replacement of all handrail cooling pads • Adding potted palms and tropical plants 12 Wildlife Corner Photo & Article By Barbara Ann Comer The Pileated Woodpecker is the largest woodpecker at Lake Ashton. Despite being almost as large as a Crow, they can go unnoticed excavating dead trees and fallen logs in search of carpenter ants. They also enjoy termites, cockroaches, wild nuts and berries. The unique rectangular holes and the nest holes they excavate provide shelter for many other species including swifts, owls, ducks and bats. The Pileated's large red crest is unmistakable and sported by both males and females (less extensively), who appear much alike except for the red cheek stripe on the male. Residents with shade trees in their yards or behind their houses have a better chance of observing these year-round residents. However, they draw attention to themselves when swooping out in the open with undulating flight sounding a loud jungle-bird like call. Just remember, the Pileated is the one that looks like Woody Woodpecker. • Installation of permanent umbrella bases and additional umbrellas • Painting of all pool furniture • Installation of additional tables and chairs • Replacement of Pool and Spa rule signs • Pressure washing the pool deck and fencing • Cleaning of column lights and repairing caps along the perimeter fence • Replacement of the Restaurant Patio awning PLEASE REMEMBER TO CLOSE UMBRELLAS AT THE POOL & PET PLAY PARKS ! It costs the District approximately $70 per umbrella to replace.
Understanding Fixed Income: For Today and the Future Fixed income is something many Americans don’t understand, according to the 2019 survey, “Fixed Income, Not Fixed Thinking,” by BNY Mellon Investment Management, one of the largest asset managers in the world. The study revealed that the majority of Americans surveyed have limited understanding of fixed income investments, regardless of age, income, education level, and other demographics. The lack of understanding ranged from bonds, different fixed income solutions including fixed-income insurance products, comprehending how fixed-income plays into retirement planning, and understanding its risk in comparison to other asset classes. The same study revealed that Americans think fixed income is important solely in the immediate run-up to retirement, or during the decumulation phase when investors start to draw from their retirement nest egg. However, fixed-income solutions can play a part in anyone’s portfolio at any age. One such fixed-income solution, fixed-indexed annuities, offer protection of principal, growth based on the performance of the index it follows, and provides fixed payments for the insured’s life during the decumulation phase. Interested is credited when the index value increases, but the interest rate is guaranteed never to be less than zero, even if the market goes down. All annuities are insurance products and not traded on public markets. Annuities are guaranteed by the claims paying ability of the insurance company issuing them. A secondary 2019 study by WealthManagement.com Research, “How Advisors are Using Fixed-Income Annuities,” reports that two-thirds of advisors surveyed are very familiar with these products and have incorporated them into client portfolios to obtain these key objectives: • Principal protection • Tax-deferred growth • Retirement income planning • Avoid Social Security income offset • Current income • Estate/Legacy planning Before purchasing a fixed-indexed annuity, it is important to understand all fees associated with the annuity, if your money is available right away, and the surrender fees, if any. Did you know scams are on the rise and scammers are getting more and more sophisticated in their tactics? Join us as NW presents a series on: SENIOR SCAMS: WHAT, WHEN, AND HOW! What are Senior Scams? Senior scams are fraudulent schemes that target only seniors using the internet, phone and even US Mail. Senior scams can take many forms, but all share the same goal of defrauding us of our money. Consumer Affairs reports, more than 3.5 million seniors in the United States lose more than $3 billion to scammers a year. Next month, in our continuing series on Senior Scams, we will explore the newest scams targeting seniors and provide ways to help you remain safe against them. The following practices will help to alleviate dangerous situations on the road. Please encourage vendors doing work at your home to follow the practices below to ensure the roads of Lake Ashton are as safe as possible. The speed limit throughout Lake Ashton is 20 mph and all golf carts, vehicles, and bicycles should make a complete stop just before the white stop bar whether before or after the 14 CAP By Mike Weissberg Since all residents are part of Neighborhood Watch you are watching things around you. Citizens Assisted Patrol (CAP) does this by patrolling our streets. Our job is to look for things that do not belong in our community. Our presence with our lights flashing while patrolling our streets is our deterrent to help keep our streets safe. CAP is always looking for more volunteers to patrol our streets. Our job is to be the eyes, ears and presence for the Sheriff’s Department. Patrols are once a week for two hours. Applications are available in the Clubhouse and HFC. 4. Dispatch will gather more information as first responders are en route. Stay on the line until first responders arrive to help dispatch with any directions and other details. At at recent Monday Coffee Public Education Officer Joshua Odom gave a presentation on calling 911. Here are the key points: • When should I call 9-1-1? When you see smoke or fire When someone’s life and/or property is in immediate danger. When a crime is being committed. When a rescue or emergency medical assistance is needed. When you are not sure, call and let trained personnel decide the appropriate response. • What happens after I have called 9-1-1? 1. Citizen calls 9-1-1 2. Dispatch receives call and requests information and location of emergency. 3. Appropriate first responders are dispatched to the location of the emergency. 5. First responders arrive on scene and begin to assess/respond to emergency. 6. Follow instructions by the dispatcher when to hang up. • I called 9-1-1 and got disconnected, what should I do? If you have called 9-1-1 and while providing dispatch information you get disconnected, wait a minute to let the dispatch attempt to call you back. Do not call immediately call 911 again - this will place you at the end of the queue and may connect you with a different dispatcher. If after a minute, you have not been called back by dispatch then again dial 9-1-1 and let the dispatcher know that you were disconnected previously. If you are unable to reach 9-1-1 dispatch after calling back, find another phone to call 9-1-1. • I called 9-1-1 by mistake. What should I do? Stay on the line and state that the call was a mistake. Answer any questions from the dispatcher before terminating the call. If you disconnect the call or do not speak to the dispatcher, they will assume the worst and send first responders to your location Helping responders find you! • After you have called 9-1-1 and first responders have been dispatched to your location, our next step is ensuring that they can find you. Even with the advanced GPS technology that our apparatuses are equipped with, having your address displayed prominently and visibly from the street is imperative to a timely response. • To ensure that your address can be seen from the street ensure that any bushes, tree limbs, or other vegetation that may have covered your house numbers are properly pruned or trimmed. • Follow the Lake Ashton ARC requirements for house and mailbox numbers. These requirements are consistent with Polk County Fire Rescue guidelines. 16

50 SHADES OF PINK COMEDY NIGHT FALL FESTIVAL 5K By David Fix The Fall Fest 5K this year will be held on October 28 beginning at 8 am with the start and finish at the Clubhouse. The beneficiary of this year's 5K will be Lake Ashton Hands 4 Hope, a group of volunteer Lake Ashton residents that has pooled together their resources to assist local families with clothing, food and basic necessities for their day to day needs. Additionally, Lake Ashton Hands 4 Hope worked with local schools last year to help identify families in need of assistance at the holidays. A party was held in the HFC to provide a meal and gifts to those who may have been otherwise overwhelmed, overlooked and vulnerable to poverty. These residents have formed a more official group and will receive the money raised from the 5K. HAUNTING ON THE LAKE II By Terri McDuff LAPAC is very excited about our upcoming fundraiser event, Haunting II On the Lake haunted house in the Lake Ashton Clubhouse Ballroom on October 28! Tickets will go on sale Monday, October 2 at the Clubhouse Activities Office. Tickets are $15 per adult and $12 per child under 12, check only, payable to LAPAC. The event will be limited to 35 individuals per group per time slot. There will be 10 half-hour time slots available through the Haunting House, from 4 to 8:30pm. Do not wait to purchase your tickets as this event has a limit of 35 people in a group per time slot and with a total of 350 people for the evening event. Your heart will race with excitement and fear! You may even let out a scream or two! But … expect the unexpected! There will be plenty of tricks and a lot of treats! MIND&BODY Know Thy Health By Lynda Hadley Good health is more than what we do; it’s also how we think. We are more powerful than we believe. And there is a connection between what we think and what we feel. Do we start each day feeling the negative residuals of what we experienced the day before? Or do we wake up with a clean slate? Do we hold on to grudges, misdeeds, or bad experiences? Or do we forgive and forget? There is a direct connection between how we process stressful situations and our hormones. Cortisol is the stress hormone that can wreak havoc on our health and cause unwanted weight gain. Cortisol also causes digestive problems, depression, inflammation, muscle tension/pain, and sleep issues. Chronic stress can also lead to heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke. Cortisol regulates our body’s fight-or-flight response to stress, which is designed to facilitate a defense or escape from a perceived threat (both physical and mental). This natural survival instinct is a good thing, until we find ourselves easily triggered by negative interactions with others, which can lead to chronic stress. The next time your blood pressure rises, ask yourself if the stress is worth the damage that your body has to absorb, or can we exercise grace and kindness to someone who may be having a bad day? The grace we extend to others is a reflection of our humanity. But if that isn’t enough encouragement to smile when faced with negative energy, consider the toll stress has on your physical and mental wellbeing. Guarding our health is a priority! WATERCOLOR WORKSHOPS Artist Freddie Combs returns to Lake Ashton for the 2024 season. She will present three day-long watercolor workshops in the new year. We had a potluck for members and their families over Memorial Day weekend and a pickleball mixer and hotdog social for America’s birthday. As the summer ends we start welcoming back our snowbird members and look forward to our next planed events. Our Newbie Clinic will resume in October and will be the first and second Monday of each month. There will be spots for 10 players on a first sign up bases. You MUST be able to attend BOTH sessions. THE LA PURPLE STARS The Purple Stars are residents of Lake Ashton who have had cancer or know of family or friends who have had cancer. Our goal is to raise funds which we donate 100% to the American Cancer Society. LA SWIM CLUB By Sandy White Last month, we shared the story of swimmer Sharon Swanson and her participation in the 2023 National Senior Games. In the entire 2023 National Games, there were 600 participants from Florida, and they won the medal count by earning 576 medals! Did you know that swimming is the best all-around exercise? One of the main benefits is that it uses quite a few arm, leg, stomach, and lower back muscles, while being easy on the joints. That is one of the reasons why some LA residents participate in some or all of our LA Swim Club activities. Others participate for general fitness; yet others are aiming for the Senior Games age group swim competition. Information can be found online at floridaseniorgames.com/sports. Some members participate in our 100-mile swim challenge, by virtually swimming to different areas of the state without leaving our pool. In addition to the fitness/health benefits, our members have raised money for Breast Cancer awareness, the pool lane markings, backstroke safety flags, the flowers around the pool deck, the clocks in the pool area, and some training equipment. They also plan to help at Lake Ashton’s Halloween haunted house. If you want to improve your fitness or if you want to become an adult competitor, come swim with our fun groups Mondays from 6 to 7 pm, Wednesdays from 1 to 2 pm, and Saturdays from 10 to 11 am. If you cannot attend our workout sessions, you are welcome to follow the printed workouts which are located in boxes in the hallway – one box contains the most recent workouts and the other contains recent past workouts. The group meets monthly on the first Sunday of the month at 2 pm in the Clubhouse Ballroom. In August, over 30 people attended the meeting. Karen Nelson read a thank you letter from the director of Senior Orphans. The group is looking forward to continuing this tradition for Christmas. The Single’s Mingle will be held on September 21 in the Pavilion from 4 to 6 pm. Volunteers are needed to help set up and clean up. If you would like to take part in activities with other singles, attend the meeting on September 3. LAVA AUXILIARY By Chris Graves The LAVA Auxiliary meets the third Wednesday of the month at the Clubhouse near the stage. The next meeting will be September 20 at 6:30 pm. The LAVA Auxiliary is a group of LA Residents who support and honor the military through fundraisers, such as our Craft Fair (see below), as well as sending holiday cards to active military and other items as needed. Come check us out! The Craft Fair on Saturday, October 21 is fast approaching and we are seeking baked goods to be sold at the Craft Fair. Time sure flies when we're having a good time and now summer is almost done. We will continue to meet in the HFC Community Center on alternate Wednesdays from 2 to 4 pm. Various members will continue to share their skills and we are doing a lot of "paint what you enjoy painting”. The point is not to paint a master piece, but to have a good time. Newcomers are always welcome and we will lend you the supplies you will need for your first meeting. A lot of people say that they want to come but can't paint or draw. We proved that isn't necessary in one of our classes in August when we dropped different colored paint on rocks and created a pattern by blowing through a straw. After the rock dried, we wrote words on our unique backgrounds, and voila, pieces of art that your friends in Lake Ashton love to find. To clarify the rule and the Lake Ashton options, take note of Ian’s guidance in the following narrative: Remember your ball is out of bounds only when all of the ball lies outside the boundary edge of the golf course. When that happens, here are your choices: Option 1 – Stroke and Distance: Replay the shot from the original spot for a One-Stroke Penalty. Option 2 – Stroke and Distance Local Rule: Determine where your ball went out of bounds and drop your ball on the edge of the fairway just behind an equal distance from the hole for a Two-Stroke Penalty.
