Thank you for all the years of dedicated service to the Lake Ashton Community. You will be missed! Loneliness is everywhere - many people feel cut off and alienated from others. Being in a crowd just makes people more aware of their isolation. We all need friends who will stick close, listen, care, and offer help when it is neededin good times and bad. It is better to have one such friend then dozens of superficial acquaintances. One who has unreliable friends soon come to ruin, be a friend who sticks closer than a brother or sister. Instead of wishing you could find a true friend, seek to become one. There are people who need your friendship, take on the challenge of being a true friend! .-Alex Fuertes, Maintenance Supervisor

REPORTING INCIDENTS AT THE PET PLAY PARKS Lake Ashton is fortunate to have three beautiful Pet Play Parks where pets and owners can socialize with others. Although incidents do not occur very often it is important to report them as soon as possible to staff for resolution. The Joint Amenity Facilities Policies states, "In the event the pet harms, bites or fights another pet or an owner, the pet will be banned from visiting the parks while other pets are present for a period of thirty (30) days. If a second incident of harm, biting, or fighting occurs within a six (6) month period, the pet will be banned from the pet park for one (1) year." It is important that all incidents are documented to help prevent potential injuries to other pets and/or

owners. If the incident occurs at the Pebble Beach or Winged Foot Pet Play Parks please contact Karen Van Kirk at maintenance@lakeashton2cdd.com. If the incident occurs at the Clubhouse Pet Play Park please contact Christine Wells at cwells@lakeashtoncdd.com. SECURITY TRANSITION UPDATE Clubhouse and HFC staff are gearing up to start distribution of RFID tags and Amenity Access Cards on September 10. Residents will come to the Clubhouse (Lake Wales residents) or HFC (Winter Haven residents) to receive their RFID tags for registered vehicles. All residents will come to the Clubhouse to have their picture taken and receive their Clubhouse Amenity Access Card. To distribute the workload, staff will be calling residents in by street, with make up days at various times throughout the process. RVs will be handled towards the end of distribution with a week dedicated to having RV owners come in to receive RFID tags. It is important for all residents to know that this process is going to take time to complete. In the meantime both systems will be working simultaneously to allow ample time for residents to be registered without losing access to entering the community via the “residents only” entrances. At this time residents should ensure they are signed up to receive email blasts. Residents should visit either Activities Office if they need help signing up. Copies of email blasts will be printed out and available for pickup at the Media Center and both Activities Offices for those that do not have email. Please contact Christine Wells or Karen Van Kirk with any questions (contact info on page 3). THE VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE By Lynda Hadley LA HANDS 4 HOPE SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE By Debby Landgrebe Four years ago it was brought to our attention by Carolyn Bishop that Wahneta Elementary School in Polk County needed assistance. The group of friends on Pinehurst Loop got together to donate time, love and a successful school supply drive. In these four years, the Pinehurst Loop friends have collected over 750 backpacks filled with much needed school supplies. This is how LA Hands 4 Hope was created. As we grow and branch out, we have decided to adopt Inwood Elementary for our 2024 school supply drive. Inwood Elementary is located in Winter Haven and is one of the neediest schools in Polk County. Over 74% of the students live in economically disadvantaged households. We are so fortunate to live in Lake Ashton and to be able to share with others. Please join us as we load more backpacks with much needed school supplies for the children and educators in need. LA Hands 4 Hope will be collecting donations of school supplies at the following locations until the morning of August 4. See blast emails for a detailed list of needs. Please drop donations off at: • Debby Landgrebe: 4331 Gullane Dr., Lake Wales • Val Yenor: 5304 Nicholas Dr., Winter Haven • Charlie Stotler: 257 Pinehurst Loop, Winter Haven Please tag all donations for Inwood Elementary School. Thank you for helping us help others! BLOODMOBILE AUGUST 19 A total of 8 units of blood were collected in June. Each blood donation can save up to three lives so that means 24 patients benefited from blood donations courtesy of blood donors at Lake Ashton. So far, Lake Ashton donations have impacted 102 lives with the 34 units of blood collected in 2024. Next blood drive: August 19 from 8:30 am to 2 pm in the Clubhouse West Parking Lot. For me, volunteering is more than working for free. It’s a way to meet the people in our community, contribute to the overall feeling of happiness we all feel living here, and to help our neighbors find answers and process administrative tasks that keep us safe and engaged. But I didn’t realize the fun and challenges that would make my life here much more rewarding. I have met some amazing people here and have learned so much about the inner workings of Lake Ashton. I feel more connected to my community and have gained a deep sense of belonging and satisfaction. Every week I come to volunteer at the Clubhouse I look forward to whatever challenges may come, and how I am able to resolve them. Having developed a great relationship with staff, I know if there are any issues I can’t solve; they are always there to help. Through this weekly commitment, I have also gained a better understanding of myself, and how we all want to feel that the person answering the phone or assisting us at the window, wants to be there and is there to help with a smile. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Christine Wells at cwells@lakeashtoncdd.com. Thank you to Larry and Joanne Hillock for their many years of service and dedication to the Lake Wales Care Center Caring Tree initiative at Lake Ashton. They have made hundreds of trips over the years bringing thousands of gifts donated by residents to the Care Center to assist families in providing Christmas gifts to their children. The 2023 season was their last season leading this endeavor and they will be missed tremendously. Please contact Christine Wells at cwells@lakeashtoncdd.com if you are interested in helping with the Caring Tree this upcoming season.

LACDD NEWS By Christine Wells, LA (LW) CDD Community Director And just like that, we are more than halfway through 2024. It’s been a hot one but Lake Ashton has many options for residents to enjoy summer comfortably. With a beautiful pool, indoor fitness options, shade throughout the outdoor amenities, and many other indoor activities, it is easy to enjoy LA summer without getting bogged down by the heat. Volunteers and Staff have worked hard the past few months to plan out activities for the rest of this year and even into next year to ensure resident's calendars stay full. Thank you to the Lake Ashton Activities Advisory Group (LAAAG) for their help with this enormous task! Clubhouse and HFC staff are gearing up to start distribution of credentials for the new access systems that were installed. Stay tuned to electronic media for more information on when and where you will be picking up your credentials. It is important that you bring all information requested in an effort to facilitate a seamless distribution. Please refer to page 7 for more information. This is a great time to ensure you are receiving emails from both CDDs. If you need help with this, please contact staff at the HFC or Clubhouse Activities Office. If you are traveling or unable to make it during the date and time that is set for you don't worry, there will be plenty of time for everyone to get their credentials before the system is officially switched over. Any questions can be directed to Christine Wells at cwells@lakeashtoncdd.com or Karen Van Kirk at maintenance@lakeashton2cdd.com. On July 15, Lake Ashton CDD Board of Supervisors met to adopt the Fiscal Year 2025 budget, set the operations and maintenance assessment, and attend to Board matters. The 2025 budget has been set and will soon be posted on lakseashtoncdd.com. The yearly assessment for Lake Wales residents was set at $2,569 and will be included on the tax bill that is sent out at the end of this year. The reciprocal agreement with the new owners of the Marina was approved. A quote was approved to paint the Clubhouse, Pool columns, Pavilion, Shuffleboard area, and Guard House. A wrap-up report of all actions was sent via email on July 19. The agenda packet with all related information can also be found on lakeashtoncdd.com. Their belief that Sirius, the brightest star in the sky, rose and set with the sun helping define the seasons. Sirius is also known as the ‘dog’ star. No doubt someone coined the phrase dog days of summer along with visions of dogs panting and lying about to beat the heat. Perhaps the crux of this message is about what seems to be a never-ending summer and our canine friends, both of which LA residents are mindful of. There are three designated dog parks in Lake Ashton. The Pebble Beach and Winged Foot Dog Parks, and the Clubhouse Pet Play Park are areas where you can safely de-leash your dog, allow them the freedom to run and play, have a designated area to relieve themselves, and in general help protect their paws from possible injury due to walking on the hot pavement. It is equally important for the many dog owners who live in Lake Ashton to have an area where they can monitor their pets’ activities and minimize their own heat exposure when walking in the hot sun. Having these amenities is a win-win for all, including non-dog owners who prefer that your pet does not use their yard for an outdoor potty. Speaking of heat exhaustion, it would behoove us to not only know the symptoms, but also the remedies. Finding a shaded area to rest and cool down, plus hydrating with water is the recommended first step in countering heat exhaustion for both humans and pets. Ice water is not recommended for dogs, although a few ice cubes can be given to your dog for a sneaky way of getting in more water. They can take their time licking and crunching on them as though it was a treat. Note: Consult your physician or veterinarian if you or your dog are experiencing heat exhaustion. Even though we can’t control the hot weather, we can still enjoy getting out-of-doors. The ideal time to walk your dog is early morning when the pavement hasn’t had time to heat up. As for Lake Ashton’s human residents, there are plenty of indoor activities at both the HFC and Clubhouse to keep you busy during the ‘dog days’ of summer. We were hoping that the RFID program implementation would have begun in late July or the beginning of August; however, due to circumstances beyond our control, it appears the date has been pushed back to September 10. We appreciate your patience. You will of course be notified by email and other means of communication as to when individual residents will be asked to register and receive their RFID decal. Please note: Lake Ashton II CDD will have a candidates forum on Tuesday, October 1, from 1 to 3 pm. A special thank you to Lake Ashton’s residents for your patience during HFC’s closure of its indoor pool due to necessary renovations and repairs.

During the hot summer months, contractors are in a hurry to beat the heat and mow homes that border ponds with less caution. When grass clippings are added to a pond, the nitrogen levels rise, increasing the likelihood of algae blooming. Please remind lawn care contractors to mow with the chute closed or in a direction that does not blow clippings into the pond. Wildlife Corner Photos & Article By Barbara Ann Comer Lake Ashton has a few species of doves. These comforting cooing birds often dwell close to humans. The more widespread Mourning Dove was probably familiar to most residents before they moved to Lake Ashton. Its mournful sound is often mistaken for an owl though the tone of voice is quite different. Mourning Doves have a long pointed tailed with white tips on the outer tail feathers. When they take off in flight their wings produce a fluttering whistle. Although similar in length, White-winged Doves are heavierbodied and as the name suggests they have white wing patches which are best observed in flight. These can be seen in perched birds depending on how they hold their wings, but will appear as a thin white line. Their shorter, rounded tail also has white tips. The call of this dove is often rendered as “Who-cooks-for-you.” The best way to tell them apart is to check the shape of the tail, look at the wings for the presence or absence of a white patch or listen to them vocalize. EDITOR’S NOTE: This is the last Wildlife Corner submission by Barbara Ann Comer. We thank you for the four years of informative Wildlife Corner articles and beautiful photographs, and for all you do for the Lake Ashton community. Residents are more informed about the wonderful and abundant wildlife in Lake Ashton because of you.

SAFETY NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH By Fay Wood, NW Chief Neighborhood Watch is a group of people living in the same area who want to make their neighborhoods safer by working together and in conjunction with law enforcement to reduce crime and improve their quality of life. NW groups have regular meetings to plan how they will accomplish their specific goals and leaders with assigned responsibilities. NW is homeland security at the most local level. It is an opportunity to volunteer and work towards further increasing the safety and security of our homes and our community. NW empowers citizens and communities to become more active in emergency preparedness, along with other community leaders like CAP, CERT, security, and volunteer Sheriff and Police Patrols to help fight against any crime or community disasters. A NW group may be organized by an existing neighborhood association, but one of the key elements is its relationship with local law enforcement and other critical first responders. Activities conducted by neighborhood watch groups across the country are as diverse and varied as their volunteers and the neighborhoods they represent. Some groups mobilize to patrol neighborhoods, others distribute crime prevention information, while business assessments or home security surveys are conducted by others. As law enforcement officers learn the needs of their various neighborhood watch groups and the dynamics of their volunteers, they can tailor activities and responses to meet the ever-changing needs of their citizens. NW is one of the oldest and best-known crime prevention concepts in North America. In the late 1960s, an increase in crime heightened the need for a crime prevention initiative focused on residential areas and involving local citizens. The National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA) responded, creating the National Neighborhood Watch (NNW) program in 1972, to assist citizens and law enforcement. In the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, strengthening and securing communities has become more critical than ever. NW programs have responded to the challenge, expanding beyond their traditional crime prevention role to help neighborhoods focus on disaster preparedness, emergency response, and terrorism awareness in support of other community volunteer groups. After the National Sheriffs’ Association kicked off the National Neighborhood Watch program, it was left to local law enforcement agencies to support local groups. Depending on the needs of the local communities, as well as the desire and teamwork of the sheriff or police chief, watch groups were started with different names and logos. However, the concept of crime prevention through citizen involvement remained constant. In the most effective and successful communities NW programs include ALL RESIDENTS AND OTHER STAKEHOLDERS and led by seasoned and proven leaders as others are groomed to lead. In Lake Ashton’s largely populated two city (Winter Haven and Lake Wales) community we currently have a Chief, Deputies over several areas and Block Captains for specific streets. A NW’s effectiveness depends heavily on its volunteer leaders and its relationships with All Law Enforcement, community vendors and other influential City, State, National and other Advisors. It’s up to the community volunteers to fill out the program needs following our growth and build out in both cities. If we want Lake Ashton’s NW and other key programs (CAP, CERT, etc.) to continue its stellar reputation, RESIDENTS need to step up and volunteer to fill various coverage areas. There was an insert in the July LA Times issue listing Deputies and current leadership (clubhouses have more, along with labels with key safety phone numbers) of those that made Lake Ashton’s total, all-inclusive NW program the success it is. Now it’s time to have Block Captains to fill in all areas. If you want to stand out to the community and county you live in and truly believe in Safety and Law Enforcement keeping our great Community the serious crime deterrent group it is in the state please call your listed neighborhood Deputy, Advisors/ Community leaders or the Chief for more information and/or to sign up. IMPORTANT DRIVER SAFETY REMINDERS The speed limit throughout all of Lake Ashton is 20 mph and all golf carts, vehicles, and bicycles (including electric bicycles) should make a complete stop just before the white stop bar whether before or after the posted stop sign. It only takes a moment to follow the traffic controls in place to potentially prevent a serious accident. Drivers, please keep an eye out for pedestrians at all times. Recently there was an incident in Lake Ashton involving a dog being walked by a resident getting hit by a vehicle reportedly going over the 20 mph speed limit. The dog succumbed to her injuries. Please remember to take your time when traveling through the community. Obeying posted speed limit and traffic signs can help avert a potential tragedy. PEDESTRIAN SAFETY When walking or bicycling, especially at night or in the early morning, remember to "Be Safe and Be Seen: Make Yourself Visible to Drivers.” • Wear bright/light colored clothing and reflective materials • Carry a flashlight • Cross in well-lit areas • Stand clear of buses, hedges, parked cars or other obstacles before crossing • Always walk facing traffic STORM SEASON Storm season runs through November 30. All residents who will be spending the summer months in Florida should prepare for severe weather. A detailed list of storm tips can be found at lakeashtoncdd.com or in the Media Center. The second tax holiday for disaster preparedness items runs August 24 through September 6. LIGHTNING SAFETY Lake Ashton has a lightning detection system to alert golfers to get off the course, and notify all residents to go indoors when the potential for a lightning strike is in the area. When the system senses a lightning danger, a high-pitched siren sounds and strobe lights turn on and stay on until the danger passes. These strobe lights are at various locations including on top of the Clubhouse, the backside of the HFC and the boat dock on Lake Ashton. A low-pitched horn will sound all clear and the strobe lights will turn off when lightning has passed. Lightning strikes may occur far away from a visible storm. Get out of pools, do not stand under trees, and get indoors when the siren sounds. Remember — golf carts are not safe from lightning. GOLF CART SAFETY The law requires that a person operating a golf cart on public roads or streets who is under 18 years of age must possess a valid learner’s permit or driver’s license. Lake Wales PD and Winter Haven PD can issue a ticket for violations of this law. Adults should not place young children on their laps between them and the steering wheel as this creates a hazardous condition for the children in the case of a panic stop or accidents. DRIVE SAFELY ! Polk County Schools start back August 12. Please use caution when traveling CR 653 during school opening and closing times. Remember, there may be longer than normal wait times in these areas during drop off and pick up times. At left is a reminder of how Florida traffic laws apply to stopping when a bus is displaying a stop signal. EVENTS A NOTE FROM CDD STAFF We all are feeling the effects of the current economy and CDD Staff is working hard on residents’ behalf to bring affordable classes and entertainment to the community that won’t break the bank. It is getting increasingly difficult to find bands under $1,000 these days. When Staff plans for the larger monthly events, the budget is started by accounting for 100 people purchasing tickets. That number is decided upon to make things easier to divvy up the cost of the event to finalize the ticket price. There are different monetary factors that are part of each single ticket price. If there is an event that includes dinner, the price needs to be determined per person. If linen tablecloths are used, the price of laundering each cloth ($8), comes into play. Then the price of the entertainment needs to be factored in and décor needs to be decided upon, potentially adding to the cost as well. Usually, Staff tries repurpose décor from other events to keep this cost low. All of these factors are calculated to help decide on the final ticket price. We appreciate your understanding. ASL saved the day for me because I opted to get a cochlear implant, and after surgery, I was deaf in both ears and would not hear again for eight weeks waiting to heal before the Cochlear Implant was Activated. Thanks for sharing your finds for all to enjoy. We purchase rocks and paint supplies, and then use our time to write messages and create the rocks to spread the kindness and to bring a smile to all of you. Our purpose is to cultivate connections within our community and lift others up through a simple act of kindness. One message at just the right moment can changes someone’s entire day, outlook, life. Our group meets on the first and third Wednesdays of each month at the HFC from 1 to 3 pm. For the summer, we have suspended teaching classes and orientations for new members, but will resume in the fall. Meanwhile, we are busily painting together in what we call “freepaint”, where we get together for the camaraderie and to learn from each other. If you are interested in joining our group, check out the September article in the LA Times for more details! If you are lucky enough to find a rock, please post a photo of your rock on Talk of Lake Ashton’s (TOLA) Facebook page. It means a lot for us to see where our rocks go. SINGLES CLUB By Carol Corley Some older Polk County residents are having an extra Christmas this year — Christmas in July, thanks to the Lake Ashton Singles’ Club. Members donated money or purchased items on a wish list for older Polk County residents who have no family and who are financially unable to buy for themselves. Many of the Christmas in July gifts were simple things that they have a hard time buying for themselves — like dog food, pajamas, shower rail. Lake Ashton residents who are alone are most welcome to join our fun group. We have a short meeting the first Sunday of every month at 2 p.m. and the Clubhouse, followed by cards, and we meet every other Sunday, same place same time, for cards. That usually lasts until about 4 p.m., after which most of us go out for dinner together. Come check us out. Pictured: Some of the Lake Ashton Singles Club members who participated in Christmas in July for needy Polk County seniors.

LA BLACK HERITAGE CLUB By Charles Roland When a person dies, the mark left on the world represents that individual's legacy. While a person's legacy can involve money, the concept of legacy is much larger than the value of an estate. It is about the richness of one’s life, including what that person accomplished and the impact he or she had on people and places. Ultimately, the story of a person's life reflects the individual's legacy. If you've ever wondered what people will remember about you after you are gone, that means you have spent some time thinking about your legacy. The same is true if you've spent time wondering if the world will be at least a bit better because of what you did throughout the course of your life. Ask yourself, “Did I touch a life in a special way today?” and “Did I make a difference in the world today?” The Black Heritage Club meets on the second Monday of each month at 4 pm in the Clubhouse Card Room. Thank you to all who attended the first ever Lake Ashton Juneteenth Celebration!

LA PICKLEBALL By Mark McDuff LAKE ASHTON FRIENDS OF MEALS ON WHEELS By Marcia Santino The Lake Ashton Pickleball Association, LAPA, is enjoying a busy summer. On July 2 LAPA sponsored a dance at the HFC. The event was attended by more than 100 people dancing the night away. On July 5, LAPA sponsored a fun day that included a pickleball mixer tournament and a hot dog cookout. The women winning the tournament’s championship game were Deb Knecht and Dianne Holman. The Men winning the tournament’s other championship game were Rick McKibben and Larry Fabian. Additionally, LAPA ran a couples league through June and July. Expect more leagues in the future. On September 14 LAPA will be sponsoring a Fun Day Potluck at the Clubhouse. To get involved, come to the Pickleball courts anytime between 8am and 11am and join the “open play” pickleball games. FRIENDLY BOCCE GROUP By Stephanie Iszak The Friendly Bocce Group would like to invite all Lake Ashton residents to come out on Mondays and Fridays from 10 am to 1 pm to play some fun games of Bocce Ball. Come out and see our “new” courts. No experience is required. Bring your drinks and an appetizer to share. This is a great opportunity to socialize and play some games. All information for the LA Friendly Bocce Group will be disseminated via "Talk of Lake Ashton" (TOLA) on Facebook, Lake Ashton Friendly Bocce on Facebook, emails, email blasts, and in our LA Times. Contact Stephanie (609-980-9505, siszak@comcast.net) or Tammy 863-632-2024, tammy.shields1221@gmail.com) with any questions. Looking forward to having many new Friendly Bocce players. As highlighted in earlier articles, Meals on Wheels of Polk County (MOWPolk) is a non-profit organization with no state or federal funding. It is sustained through community-based charity, volunteers and proceeds from its thrift store sales. A sincere THANK YOU to everyone that has supported MOW through our “Third Thursday Second Chance Donations” initiative that began in April. MOWPolk is always in need of volunteers, particularly delivery drivers, the lifeblood of the organization. On any given week MOWPolk must hire paid drivers for six or more of their routes. The summer months are particularly difficult because many of the volunteers go north for a few months and others take vacations. A BIG SALUTE to those who answered our TOLA call to help fill some routes during these critical months and to everyone volunteering in some way to support this much needed service to the wonderful community we call home. If you are civic-minded and have a few hours available each week, please consider volunteering with MOW. In addition to route drivers they need volunteers to prepare, cook or package food, kitchen clean-up and work in the thrift store. To inquire about becoming a volunteer or if you are in need of meal service please call: 863-299-1616. To become a club member or for more information, email lafomow@gmail.com. The next “Third Thursday Second Chance” donation date is August 15. Residents may drop off quality donations* at either the south dressing room in the Clubhouse Ballroom or the the HFC. Donations will be collected at the end of the day and delivered to Meals on Wheels for you. *Acceptable donations include anything of quality in re-sellable condition except large furniture items (such as sofas and recliners) and no mattresses. Best-selling categories include home décor, name brand clothing and accessories, kitchen items and shoes. All donations are greatly appreciated.

The summer exodus has thinned the size of the weekly LAMGA field, but not the opportunities for fun and competitive games. The LAMGA schedule includes a featured monthly event in July, August and September, and it all started with the July 10 Beat the Board game followed by lunch in the Eagle’s Nest. Eleven teams – including one representing the board – teed off on the East Course, and when the round was over, only one had beaten the board. Denis Lussier, Charlie Mutz, Don Connors and Harry Krumie pulled out a one-stroke win over the board team of Rolly Geyer, Larry Wilson, Jim Shillito and Tim Wayt. August has another game and lunch in store with a pickyour-partner event. Check the calendar on the bulletin board and LAMGA web page (LakeAshtonLiving.com) for more details. And then there will be a two-day event on Sept. 11 and 12, structured around the President’s Cup that takes place later that month between U.S. and international teams. This outing includes breakfast on Day 1 and lunch on Day 2. Save the date, and stay tuned for details. (Continued on p. 38)
