LA PICKLEBALL By Mark McDuff LAKE ASHTON FRIENDS OF MEALS ON WHEELS By Marcia Santino The Lake Ashton Pickleball Association, LAPA, is enjoying a busy summer. On July 2 LAPA sponsored a dance at the HFC. The event was attended by more than 100 people dancing the night away. On July 5, LAPA sponsored a fun day that included a pickleball mixer tournament and a hot dog cookout. The women winning the tournament’s championship game were Deb Knecht and Dianne Holman. The Men winning the tournament’s other championship game were Rick McKibben and Larry Fabian. Additionally, LAPA ran a couples league through June and July. Expect more leagues in the future. On September 14 LAPA will be sponsoring a Fun Day Potluck at the Clubhouse. To get involved, come to the Pickleball courts anytime between 8am and 11am and join the “open play” pickleball games. FRIENDLY BOCCE GROUP By Stephanie Iszak The Friendly Bocce Group would like to invite all Lake Ashton residents to come out on Mondays and Fridays from 10 am to 1 pm to play some fun games of Bocce Ball. Come out and see our “new” courts. No experience is required. Bring your drinks and an appetizer to share. This is a great opportunity to socialize and play some games. All information for the LA Friendly Bocce Group will be disseminated via "Talk of Lake Ashton" (TOLA) on Facebook, Lake Ashton Friendly Bocce on Facebook, emails, email blasts, and in our LA Times. Contact Stephanie (609-980-9505, siszak@comcast.net) or Tammy 863-632-2024, tammy.shields1221@gmail.com) with any questions. Looking forward to having many new Friendly Bocce players. As highlighted in earlier articles, Meals on Wheels of Polk County (MOWPolk) is a non-profit organization with no state or federal funding. It is sustained through community-based charity, volunteers and proceeds from its thrift store sales. A sincere THANK YOU to everyone that has supported MOW through our “Third Thursday Second Chance Donations” initiative that began in April. MOWPolk is always in need of volunteers, particularly delivery drivers, the lifeblood of the organization. On any given week MOWPolk must hire paid drivers for six or more of their routes. The summer months are particularly difficult because many of the volunteers go north for a few months and others take vacations. A BIG SALUTE to those who answered our TOLA call to help fill some routes during these critical months and to everyone volunteering in some way to support this much needed service to the wonderful community we call home. If you are civic-minded and have a few hours available each week, please consider volunteering with MOW. In addition to route drivers they need volunteers to prepare, cook or package food, kitchen clean-up and work in the thrift store. To inquire about becoming a volunteer or if you are in need of meal service please call: 863-299-1616. To become a club member or for more information, email lafomow@gmail.com. The next “Third Thursday Second Chance” donation date is August 15. Residents may drop off quality donations* at either the south dressing room in the Clubhouse Ballroom or the the HFC. Donations will be collected at the end of the day and delivered to Meals on Wheels for you. *Acceptable donations include anything of quality in re-sellable condition except large furniture items (such as sofas and recliners) and no mattresses. Best-selling categories include home décor, name brand clothing and accessories, kitchen items and shoes. All donations are greatly appreciated.
