LACDD NEWS By Christine Wells, LA (LW) CDD Community Director (cwells@lakeashtoncdd.com) Believe it or not, the first day of Fall is September 22. Even though we won’t experience the traditional cooler temperatures and leaves changing colors, this does mark a time when friends traveling and visiting family and friends in other parts of the country return home. Welcome your friends and neighbors back by coming out to Monday Coffee, going to Music Bingo at Charm City, an event at the Clubhouse or HFC, or maybe play a round of golf and enjoy a lunch at the Eagle's Nest afterwards. Whatever you choose, Lake Ashton is full of opportunities for socializing with friends and neighbors to nurture current relationships and create new friendships. The Board of Supervisors met on August 18. The Board approved a quote for $4,356 to repair erosion near the bridge on hole 12 (East Course). The Engineer is working on quotes for additional repairs on the East Golf Course. The Board approved of the renewal agreement with Yellowstone Landscaping (at the same rate as 2025). Supervisors voted to bid out the current agreements for Applied Aquatic and Securitas. Supervisors discussed the updated Joint Amenity Policies and made changes that will be included and redistributed for Supervisors and Residents to review before approval. Residents are encouraged to review the policies and submit any suggested changes to Supervisors or Staff for consideration. Supervisors reviewed 3 proposals for pressure washing and sealing the East Golf Course bridges. The Board voted to approve the quote submitted by C&C Outdoor, Inc. for $13,500. Bridge board replacement was tabled to explore alternative options. The staff at the Clubhouse and HFC are always working to ensure residents enjoy the best years of their life...their retirement years. Currently LACDD staff is working on painting and replacing street signs throughout the Lake Wales portion of Lake Ashton. Facility staff work hard in the summer to ensure Lake Ashton remains as beautiful as the first time you saw it, which can be challenging with rain, bugs, and heat. But, staff does not let that hold them back. Pictured are Angel cleaning signs and AJ painting signs. Photo by Matt Fisher, Operations Manager, who manages the facility maintenance team and also ensures contract compliance with our aquatic and landscaping vendors. RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT By Marianne Zak Al Goldstein of Heath Land Lane has lived in Lake Ashton for twelve years. It is the longest he has ever lived in one location. Born in Broward County, he is a proud seventh generation Floridian on his maternal side and a proud Southerner. Al became an enigma at fourteen when he ventured into Cuba on a ferry, bi-monthly, to earn spending money by picking up a package for a gentleman from his neighborhood who covered all of Al's expenses. His deliveries preceded Amazon! Al joined the Naval Air Reserve at sixteen and served one weekend a month in Jacksonville, Florida. After graduation from high school, he sacrificed two baseball scholarships to become active-duty in the United States Marine Corp. He went to Parris Island Boot Camp and served thirteen years with three deployments to Vietnam on active duty. Uncle Sam recruited Al to "come out of uniform" and serve esoterically for our government. This was how Al became an expert on "lingerie" as a "Lingerie Sales Manager" and a "registered corsetiere". His service took him to sixty-eight countries where he purchased materials and machinery from 1974 through 1989 and did his work. In 1995 Uncle Sam called Al back to work. Al and his understanding wife, Shirley, raised their blended family of four children in Georgia. His work also took them to reside in Panama, Central South America. In 2014 Al and Shirley settled in Lake Ashton. They had both converted to Christianity. When Shirley, Als' beloved wife of thirty-four years died in 2023, she had a celebration of life at High Point Church. Al's son, Mitch, has recently moved in with Al and enjoys his father's company. Al was a City Commissioner in Lake Wales, President of the LA Republican Club, Vice Chair of the Republican Executive Committee for six years and a delegate at the Republican Convention in 2016. He was invited to attend President Trump's 13 Inauguration on January 20, 2025 where he sat five rows behind the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He met Brigadier General Roger C. Smith and spoke to another Marine, Vice President JD Vance. To honor his late wife, Shirley, "who supported me for the years in and out of uniform and of course for the Marine Corps", Al is hosting a Birthday Celebration on November 10, 2025 to celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the United States Marines Corps here at Charm City. Al Goldstein may be an enigma, but he is a loyal patriot and Marine through and through. WE REMEMBER ... The Media Center was dedicated in memory of Murray Zacharia in October 2019, upon his passing in September 2019. Murray created the Blue Man Group who still play on a weekly basis from the blue tees. With the help of Linda and Murray's son Seth, Murray is celebrated during an Annual Memorial Golf Tournament in his honor. Since the dedication of the Media Center in Murray's honor, a picture of Murray's hole-in-one at Lake Ashton, a picture is of his family; Linda Zacharia (wife), Shellie (daughter), Marcie (daughter), and Seth (son) and a 3rd picture of Murray on a cruise with Lake Ashton friends have been added. Murray was the epitome of a dedicated steward of the Lake Ashton Community. He was on every board and committee that would have him and truly helped mold Lake Ashton into the amazing community that it is. There wasn't a time that he could be found in the Clubhouse without a newspaper, book, or notebook in his hand. He was at every meeting that was held at Lake Ashton, even when he wasn't on one of the boards. He was one of few people that loved a good meeting. He was an information man with a wealth of knowledge that he was willing to share with anyone and his heart was dedicated to Lake Ashton. He is missed everyday by those that had the pleasure of knowing him. When you are in the Clubhouse Media Center next take a second to remember a resident that was dedicated to Lake Ashton being "Simply the Best.”

L.A. LOOKS Wildlife Corner Photo & Article By Barbara Ann Comer The Black-necked Stilt is a large, flashy shorebird that graces Lake Ashton with its presence in Spring and early Summer when they arrive to nest. The shallow nest is usually along the shore. Stilts favor the retention ponds on the West Course. This gregarious black and white shorebird has bubblegum pink legs and flies with them fully extended and will make much noise if the nest or young are too closely approached. The male and female are nearly identical, but the female is actually a very dark brown on the back. It's a real treat to see them gather the young under their breasts. This is one shorebird that not only will perform a broken-wing act to lure predators away, but can also put on an unequaled broken-leg act. Using the golf cart as a blind is one of the best ways to observe them without disturbing them. ROAD CONSTRUCTION NOTICE Pavement work on Turnberry Lane will start on October 1. There will be minimal impact to most residents October 1 — 3, with the road open from each end but not to thru traffic. Starting the week of October 6, no vehicles can be parked on the road. Tuesday, October 7 through Friday, October 10, residents should expect minimal to no access to the roadway, barring emergencies. Late Friday, October 10, the road is scheduled to be complete and open to traffic. This schedule is subject to weather conditions, unforeseen circumstances, and 14 Why is the algae in my pond not being treated? LACDD staff works closely with our aquatics contractor to ensure all treatments are being completed. During the summer months algae are fueled from the warm waters, sunny days, and large amounts of rain. Rain allows for “runoff” to seep into the ponds which provide food for unwanted plants, like algae. The aquatics technician is allowed to treat the ponds with approved chemicals and the frequency is determined by Southwest Florida Water Management District. This frequency is every 2 weeks. My pond is full — will there be flooding if we have a hurricane? Each pond Lake Ashton CDD owns is designed to prevent flooding. Residents may notice a concrete structure in their pond. This man-made concrete structure is called an outfall structure. This is the discharge point for stormwater that prevents flooding and overflowing. Are algae blooms harmful? Algae are a natural component of the aquatic food chain and are not typically harmful to people. When will my pond begin to look better? The Fall and Winter months help substantially in reducing algae blooms. Cooler weather and less rain make pond conditions less desirable for algae to thrive. Email Matt Fisher at mfisher@lakeashtoncdd.com with any questions or concerns. resident cooperation in keeping the road clear. Schedule changes will be communicated via electronic media. Please ensure you are signed up to receive email blasts (see page 11 for instructions). Residents who will be impacted will receive a letter in the mail in the coming weeks with more information. In Florida, to be considered age-restricted, a 55+ community must comply with the Housing for Older Persons Act (HOPA). To maintain HOPA status, the community must conduct age verification every two years. Every home in Lake Ashton West has received a copy of the Age Verification form from our management company, Stambaugh. Many have returned theirs, but not enough for us to maintain 18 our status. If you need another form you can pick one up from our flyer slots at the HFC. Please help us maintain our 55+ designation. Fill out the form according to the directions and return it to Stambaugh as quickly as possible. You can mail the form or put it into the White HOA mailbox at the HFC. SAFETY NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH (NW) CORNER By Fay Wood, NW Chief Lake Ashton residents, like many across the country, have been victims of financial scams and fraud. Losses among Americans over 60 rose 11% last year, with criminals stealing more than $3.4 billion, according to the FBI’s Elder Fraud Report. Here are some of the most common scams in 2025 and how to protect yourself. Employment Scams Job scams are on the rise, from fake ads on major sites to phony recruiter emails. Often, victims are told they’ve been hired and asked to provide Social Security numbers, bank account details, or even upfront payments for training. Some scammers send bogus checks as “signing bonuses,” then request refunds for supposed overpayments. These checks eventually bounce, leaving victims out of pocket. Stay safe: • Even reputable job boards can host fake postings. • Verify recruiters by checking the company’s website and staff directory. • Be suspicious of high-paying “work-fromhome” jobs. • Real employers won’t require payment for training or ask for personal financial details early in the process. Cryptocurrency Scams With Bitcoin surpassing $100,000 in late 2024, crypto scams are booming. In 2023, Americans over 60 reported 17,000 complaints and $1.6 billion in losses. Scammers often use social media, dating apps, and messaging platforms to befriend victims, then push fraudulent “investment opportunities.” Fake profit dashboards lure victims 20 into investing more, but when they try to withdraw funds, the money vanishes. Another growing fraud involves celebrity impostor endorsements of crypto products. To combat this, the FTC introduced a 2024 rule banning fake testimonials and enabling penalties against violators. Stay safe: • Be wary of unsolicited investment advice, especially from strangers online. • Verify endorsements through official sources. • Remember: legitimate investments don’t guarantee “huge profits with no risk.” Tech Support Scams Older adults are five times more likely than younger people to lose money to tech support fraud, costing Americans over $175 million in 2023. These scams often begin with pop-ups claiming your computer is infected. Victims who click links or call numbers may grant remote access to criminals, who then steal data, install malware, or sell fake “warranty” services. Stay safe: • Legitimate tech companies won’t call, email, or use pop-ups to report computer problems. • Never click pop-up links or grant remote access unless you initiated the request. • Restart your computer to remove a pop-up, and run a security scan if you’ve granted access. Card-Declined Scams The BBB has seen a surge in scams where shoppers receive “card declined” messages during online purchases. Victims often retry multiple times, unaware charges are actually going through — sometimes for larger amounts. Many incidents stem from fraudulent websites or phishing links. Example: In 2024, AAA members received fake offers for a “free emergency kit” if they paid shipping. After entering card details, victims faced multiple fraudulent charges. (continued)

(continued from p. 20) Stay safe: • Always use a credit card instead of a debit card, which has weaker fraud protection. • Research unfamiliar retailers and scrutinize website URLs for small differences. • Ignore unsolicited offers, even if they appear to come from trusted organizations. Reporting Scams If you’ve been targeted, file a police report and notify fraud hotlines. The AARP Fraud Watch Network Helpline (877-908-3360) offers support and guidance from trained specialists. free A Note from the Chief Scammers continually evolve their tactics, but awareness and caution are your best defenses. Protect personal information, question unsolicited offers, and verify before you trust. With vigilance, we can reduce the risk of becoming the next victim. As a long time Consumer Advocate and your Neighborhood Watch Chief, I recommend your reviewing these points and if you have any concerns please contact the Lake Wales Police Department, Winter Haven Police Department or the Polk County Sheriffs Office (see page 3 for contact information). Stay safe and enjoy the summer! — Chief Fay Wood, Neighborhood Watch ROAD SAFETY Please keep in mind the streets in Lake Ashton are very narrow and there are many forms of traffic which heightens the danger during busy times. The following practices will help to alleviate dangerous situations on the road. Please encourage vendors doing work at your home to follow the practices below to ensure the roads of Lake Ashton are as safe as possible. • Do not park a vehicle directly parallel to another vehicle • Do not park on a curve • Park as close to the curb as possible 21 Remember, the speed limit throughout Lake Ashton is 20 mph and all golf carts, vehicles, and bicycles should make a complete stop just before the white stop bar whether before or after the posted stop sign. Anyone operating a golf cart on public roads or streets who is under 18 years of age must possess a valid learner’s permit or driver’s license. Lake Wales and Winter Haven police can issue tickets for violations. Adults should not place young children on their laps between them and the steering wheel as this creates a hazardous condition for the children in the case of a panic stop or accidents. PEAK STORM SEASON Residents should be prepared for stormy weather through November 30 when hurricane season ends. A detailed list of storm tips can be found on lakeashtoncdd.com. Pay attention to the lightning detection devices throughout the community and seek shelter when the sirens sound. photo: Dennis Krupinski

EVENTS Wow, what a week! Residents had a great time at Camp Lake Ashton this year. Activities ranged from playing corn hole and ping pong to learning how to plant an eco-system in a jar and it all was made possible by our sponsors; AdventHealth, Performance Golf Carts, Iceberg Home Services, Spring Lake Rehab Center, and Freedom Health: Medicare. A very special thanks goes out to all of our Volunteer Camp Counsellors for helping make this week possible by either teaching activities or helping with set-up and clean-up of the activities. This year’s camp award winners are: Happiest Camper: Marianne Zak Camp Jitterbug: Pam McGuire, Ed Commons, Phil Hines Crafty Camper: Jill Groves Camp Cut-Up: Jeffro Wagner Campers of the Week: Blaze & Kerry Giebler September 28 The strength of our community is built on the simple ways we support each other every day. True community begins with connection — a wave, a smile, or a friendly chat that helps turn strangers into neighbors. Extending an invitation to share in activities, whether it’s a walk, a cup of coffee, or a neighborhood gathering, brings people together. We grow closer through celebration of milestones, holidays, and successes that remind us we’re part of something bigger than ourselves. With awareness, we watch out for one another, keeping an eye on each other’s homes and well-being. And by offering our availability, we show that when help is needed, a neighbor can always be counted on. Together, these simple acts create neighborhoods that are not only safe and welcoming, but also truly connected. FALL FESTIVAL This year’s festivities will be held November 1 from 2 pm to 5 pm in the west parking lot and will help raise money for Alzheimer’s Awareness in partnership with Team Sam, LA resident Judy Puntuerri’s team. Don’t forget to bring your cash to dunk volunteers for the cause! Enjoy giant versions of classic games, a pumpkin carving contest, yard games, and a putting green put on by the Pro Shop. Bring your lawn chairs and enjoy the beer bucket specials from Charm City and tunes provided by resident DJ George Pollock. Stay tuned for the list of dunkees and more information to come! No green thumb necessary. LA BLACK HERITAGE CLUB By Charles Roland On September 22, 1862, the Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation was announced. That announcement of “Freedom” allows us to live together now. Today we can regard one another in Lake Ashton with respect, kindness and seeking understanding. Our neighbors come from different locations and backgrounds, and all have demonstrated a love for our Country and its people. We all appreciate our neighborhood and want the best for it as well. One thing for certain is that the legacy we leave behind is important to all of us. To that end, if we toss out labels and stereotypes and simply talk to one another, we will find we have similarities. We can do ourselves well by recognizing that a “Party” or “color” does not make the person. How we treat each other shows what we truly value. If we see you, you will be greeted with a smile. We hope we get one in return. MAGIC YEARS CLUB By Lynne Judd Are you a Disney lover? Then the Magic Years Club is the place for you! LAVA AUXILIARY By Chris Graves We hope everyone had a wonderful summer. The next meeting of the LAVA Auxiliary will be on Wednesday, September 17 at 6:30 p.m. in the Clubhouse Ballroom near the stage. We will be reviewing “behind the scenes” of what makes the Annual Craft Fair successful … YOU! SAVE THE DATE: The Craft Fair is scheduled for Saturday, October 25. This year’s Craft Fair will benefit K9 Partners for Patriots The words "K9 Partners for Patriots" clearly identifies the organization and its mission. The service dog placing its paw on the veteran signifies the partnership between the veterans and their service dogs. Please see below on information on how you can help us raise money for this Veteran Charity. BAKERS NEEDED FOR THE CRAFT FAIR: Thanks to our generous Lake Ashton Residents we sold more than $1000 in baked goods at last year’s Craft Fair. Again, we are asking residents to consider donating baked goods to be sold at this year’s Craft Fair. For those bakers that might be calorie conscious, there are no calories when you give away your yummy baked goods.! LAKE ASHTON FRIENDS OF MEALS ON WHEELS By Marcia Santino The end of the year is fast approaching and it is not too early to begin planning 2025 income tax strategies. A charitable contribution to a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization such as Meals on Wheels of Polk County is an effective way to reduce your tax burden and improve the lives of others in our community. Something to consider is a Qualified Charitable Distribution (“QCD”), also known as an IRA Charitable Rollover. A QCD is a tax-advantaged way for anyone over 70½ to donate to charity directly from a Traditional IRA (your own or inherited), inactive Simplified Employee Pension (SEP) plan or inactive Savings Incentive Match Plan for Employees (SIMPLE). QDCs are made directly to the eligible charity from the provider (custodian) and never pass through the individual (donor). As a result, the QCD amount is excluded from the donor's taxable income, which can be particularly advantageous for those who don't itemize deductions. An additional bonus of a QCD is it may also satisfy all or part of an individual’s Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) for the year. Meals on Wheels of Polk County receives no government funds. It depends on the generosity of the community for existence. In 2024 it delivered over 122,500 nutritious meals, fellowship and wellness checks to more than 1,250 individuals. A charitable contribution to MOWPolk ensures your dollars will benefit the homebound of Polk County and would be gratefully accepted and greatly appreciated. If you are in need of services, interested in volunteering or would like to make a monetary charitable donation to MOWPolk, please call: 863-299-1616. To become a member of the LAFOMOW Club please email lafomow@gmail.com. Next Second Chance Donation Day is September 18. Note: This is not financial advice. If you are considering a charitable donation, a CPA or financial advisor can help you minimize your tax liability and maximize the value and impact of your gift by choosing the right strategy or combination of strategies for your situation. 30

GOLF LAMGA By David Kubissa This is the second of two conversations with the Lake Ashton golf pros who support LAMGA throughout the year. Matt Auen was the head professional at Lake Ashton from 2018 to 2023 when he retired. Since then, he has worked parttime in the Pro Shop while continuing to give lessons, help with tournaments and work with LAMGA. Where did you play your first round of golf, how old were you and with whom did you play? Maple Dale Country Club in Dover, Delaware, with my Dad. I was 6 years old. What motivated you to become a PGA professional, and what do you like most about the job? Working at a country club growing up and observing my mentor and teacher, Rick McCall. I had a successful high school career and truly love the game. I love the environment, varied responsibilities, and the daily personal interactions. Teaching and coaching and seeing someone improve is very rewarding. I also enjoy not being tied to a desk and spending part of the workday outside. Where did you work before coming to the Lake Ashton Golf Club? Country Club of Virginia in Richmond, Imperial Lakes in Lakeland, The Vinoy Golf Club in St. Pete, and the Bayou Club in Largo. I also was director of golf and general manager at Laurel Oak in Sarasota for 16 years. When you get a chance to practice, what are your favorite drills? I enjoy on-course practice the most where you can repeat shots and see and reinforce improvement. As for drills, I like swing progressions – ¼ swing to ½ swing to ¾ swings to full swings. Most people find their ¾ swings the most solid and consistent. On the putting green, I like using two balls to play from hole to hole with every hole being a Par 2. Keep track of the score vs. par and repeat several times to improve the score. 40 Red Hoagland Challenge: Leaderboard through July 31: 1. Steve Kettells, $143; 2. Mike Krigelski, $137.75; 3. Denis Mulhearn, $132.75; 4. Jim Salb, $132.40. LA NINERS By Sandy Hockenberry Congratulations to Niners Vice President, Brenda Bowden for an Eagle on 9 East on July 28, 2025. Way to go Brenda, the Niners are proud of you! The Niners would like to give a warm welcome and thank you to the new Pro Shop General Manager, Kevin Baker. Kevin is doing a terrific job and initiating, much needed changes to benefit the course and membership. Kevin was even kind enough to bring cold, wet towels to the Niners, out onto the course on an extremely hot and humid July day. It provided some much needed relief and was very much appreciated. With the recent heat and humidity, the Niners have adjusted the games on a week-by-week basis, depending on conditions. Proposed games scheduled for September are: September 2: 1-2-3 Shamble – each team member hits a tee-shot, best ball is selected and everyone plays from there on Par-3; Par-4, the first two best balls are selected and played from there; and Par-5, the first three best balls are selected and played from there. (team game) September 9: Pink Ball Shamble 2 Best Nets – regular Shamble with two best nets recorded. Each team member will alternate using one pink ball on each hole. If the pink ball is lost during play, the team is not eligible to win the round. The team who still has their pink ball and the lowest score at the end of the round, wins. (team game) September 16: Individual Low Gross/Low Net – Playing your own ball, the lowest gross and lowest net in your flight wins. (individual game) September 23: Modified Alternate Shot – 2 person team, best drive is selected. Whose ever drive is selected, the other person plays the next shot, shots are alternated until the ball is holed. (team game) September 30: 2 Person Scramble – A + D players play a regular scramble and B + C players play a regular scramble. (team game) The Niners new league season starts October 7th. Anyone wishing to join a fun, laidback group of women for a relaxing 9 holes of golf Tuesday mornings, please stop by the Pro Shop and fill out an application. LALGA By Beverly Hines Whew, has it been hot! A big thank you to Kevin Baker, General Manager, and Matt Aeun, Golf Pro, for delivering scented cooling towels to members on the course for our play day on July 29 as it was extremely hot that day. They continued to make the scented cooling towels and ice available to all players during the hot August days. We are blessed to have such a caring team of professionals in our Pro Shop. Looking forward to cooler temperatures and some afternoon showers this month. November 1 is the beginning of our LALGA year. In preparation for the year, the Board will be discussing the annual budget at the September board meeting and will finalize the budget at the October meeting. Board meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month at 9am in the Clubhouse Craft Room. Members are welcome to attend board meetings. Some fun games are scheduled for each Tuesday in the month of September. Games are posted on the LALGA bulletin board in the Pro Shop. Sign up to play on the bulletin board or online by logging in and going to https://lakeashtonliving.com/community/ golf/lalga-golf-registration. SAVE THE DATE: LAMGA – LALGA Shirts and Skirts Tournament, October 28 and 29. Day 1: 2 net Shamble; Day 2: Scramble with lunch to follow. Pairings will be picked by Pro Shop. $25 includes prizes and lunch (Chili dogs with all the fixings). Watch for the sign-up sheet in the Pro Shop. The Red Hoagland Challenge recognizes the top four prize money winners during the year June 1-May 31. Standings at the end of July were: 1st place – Joanne McKinley, 2nd place – Pam Pagel, 3rd place – Bev Hines, and 4th place – Shearly Simpson.
