LACDD NEWS By Christine Wells, Interim LACDD Community Director (cwells@lakeashtoncdd.com) November welcomes back many of our seasonal residents and brings renewed energy and excitement to Lake Ashton. It is a wonderful time to reconnect with neighbors, welcome familiar faces, and make new friends. Whether you have been part of Lake Ashton for years or are experiencing your first season here, we encourage you to take advantage of the many opportunities our community has to offer. The Clubhouse and resident clubs provide a variety of activities and events, and the Activities Office is a great resource for learning about upcoming programs. We are especially grateful for our dedicated volunteers, club leaders, and staff members whose time, talents, and efforts contribute so much to making Lake Ashton a wonderful place to call home. With more residents and guests enjoying the community, safety and courtesy become especially important. Please remember to obey the posted 20 mph speed limit and all stop signs, remain attentive to pedestrians, bicycles, and golf carts, and exercise additional caution as daylight hours become shorter. Residents who enjoy evening walks are encouraged to wear reflective clothing or carry a light to improve visibility. We also ask everyone to be mindful of others when using our shared amenities and facilities. A little patience, consideration, and cooperation go a long way toward ensuring a safe and enjoyable environment for everyone. November is also a season of gratitude and an opportunity to reflect on what makes our community special. Beyond our beautiful surroundings and wonderful amenities, it is the people of Lake Ashton who truly make the difference. From neighbors helping neighbors to volunteers generously giving their time, these everyday acts of kindness create the welcoming atmosphere we all appreciate. As we approach Thanksgiving, we encourage everyone to find small ways to give back, support local charitable efforts, and show appreciation to the staff and volunteers who work throughout the year to serve our community. Even a simple smile or kind word can make someone's day a little brighter. We also encourage residents to stay engaged and informed about District matters by attending Board of Supervisors meetings and visiting lakeashtoncdd.com for important updates, meeting information, and community announcements. Your participation and interest help support the continued success of Lake Ashton. On behalf of the Lake Ashton CDD Board of Supervisors and District staff, we extend a warm welcome home to our seasonal residents and express our sincere appreciation to everyone who contributes to making Lake Ashton such a special community. We wish you and your families a safe, healthy, and very Happy Thanksgiving! 6

We may not experience autumn with its falling leaves of red, yellow, and gold, but we look forward to (in anticipation) cooler temperatures, as we continue welcoming back our resident snowbirds. Some residents may observe All Saints Day, Diwali, or other religious and cultural holidays, while others will celebrate a traditional Thanksgiving. We also honor our military veterans on Veterans Day, paying tribute for their sacrifices and contributions to our nation. November is also the month where Americans can exercise their right to vote. The Clubhouse and the HFC, in past years, have alternated hosting a Community Potluck; however now they are only hosting a Friendsgiving Potluck. This year the HFC is hosting the 'Friendsgiving' potluck, reminiscent of years' past. We will be providing the turkey, dressing, gravy, mashed potatoes, hot rolls and cranberry sauce. You may purchase your tickets for this event at the HFC with the deadline for purchasing tickets on November 9. The United States Marine Corp celebrates its birthday in November and there are also other notable events such as national Alzheimer’s and Diabetes awareness month. Cyber Monday and Black Friday also take place just in time for bargain hunters looking for that perfect holiday gift. November is indeed a month filled with activities and events galore, including Lake Ashton’s annual USO dance hosted by LAVA, on November 6, beginning at 6 pm. Be sure to mark the date of Thursday, November 19 at 9 am for the LA II CDD Board of Supervisors meeting. An email will also be provided with information on how residents can attend via ZOOM. Just as a reminder, you may get an RFID Decal and Golf Cart Sticker Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 am and 4 pm at the HFC, and remember, all Lake Ashton residents are required to register their golf carts. Prior to the HFC ending this year with a celebratory New Years’ Eve dance, it will host its’ Holiday dance dubbed “Rocking Around the Christmas Tree “on December 18, featuring the Tony Knight band and the Bacon Wake Food Truck. If you have not attended a fitness class at the HFC in the past month or so, you are in for a surprise with new classes and new instructors. Come on down and check out what is happening at the HFC. 8

When health, safety, or welfare is threatened, the Amenity Manager may immediately restrict or suspend privileges without waiting for repeated offenses. We appreciate everyone's cooperation in treating staff and volunteers with respect. HAVE VISITORS? November is a traditional time for residents to host family and friends. Remember, when you see a visiting grandchild, they are guests of your neighbors so please extend every courtesy possible. Residents: please be tolerant of extra activity at the pool and other amenities. Those hosting family should remind them to be considerate of residents in this 55 and older community. It is helpful if a resident accompanies their guests at any of the amenities, but is not required. All guests can be registered at either Activities Desk during business hours. Residents can call security (number on page 3) to register their guests after hours. Back Pain That Hasn't Improved — Even After Injections, Therapy, or Surgery A non-surgical option for damaged spinal discs, offered by a retired Navy surgeon. Consultations by web meeting — no travel. Gerald Mastaw, MD Retired Lieutenant Commander, United States Navy Wartime Surgeon | Lead Discseel® Provider and Trainer “I served as a wartime surgeon before I practiced here in Florida. I know what years of physical demand do to a spine, and I know how frustrating it is to be told that major surgery is the only option left. It isn’t always.” WHAT THE DISCSEEL® PROCEDURE IS The Discseel® Procedure is a minimally invasive, outpatient treatment for damaged spinal discs. It uses fibrin — a biologic — injected into tears in the disc wall. There is no cutting, no fusion hardware, and no laser. The procedure takes approximately 40 minutes and is performed with X-ray guidance under mild sedation. It begins with an annulogram™, an imaging step that identifies tears standard MRI can miss. CONDITIONS IT MAY BE CONSIDERED FOR • Degenerative disc disease • Annular tears • Bulging or herniated discs • Sciatica and radiating leg pain • Chronic low back or neck pain • Pain persisting after prior spine surgery, fusion, or laminectomy Not every patient is a candidate. A consultation and imaging review determine whether the procedure is appropriate for your condition. FOR VETERANS Covered through VA Community Care. The Discseel® Procedure is covered for eligible veterans through the VA Community Care Network, administered by Optum. We walk you through the referral process with the VA from start to finish. You don’t need to know the terminology or navigate it alone — call us first and our team will handle it with you, step by step. Your consultation is by web meeting. NOT A VETERAN? Discseel® is not covered by Medicare or most commercial insurance. We’ll review your imaging, tell you honestly whether you’re a candidate, and give you clear pricing before you commit to anything. No obligation. HOW IT WORKS 1. Consultation by web meeting. We review your imaging and history with you from home. No driving, no waiting room. You’ll know whether you’re a candidate before you travel anywhere. 2. The procedure. Performed as an outpatient procedure at a surgical center in the Tampa metro area — a single visit, approximately 40 minutes. RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT By Marianne Zak Meet Larry and Vickie Carman of Limerick Drive, a dynamic duo with a lifetime of adventur e and service behind them. They met when Vickie asked for a ride on the back of Larry’s motorcycle, and they’ve been riding together ever since! Married for 26 years, they have three children and nine grandchildren, ages 2 to 17. Originally from Ohio, they became Lake Ashton snowbirds in 2021 and full-time residents in 2025. Vickie began her career at age 16 as a Police Explorer Scout, working with law enforcement until she turned 21. She assisted with traffic stops, accidents and community events, and worked undercover in narcotics, purchasing drugs for police lab analysis to help get dealers off the streets, including those selling to children as young as 8. After earning an associate degree in law enforcement in 1978, Vickie spent 10 years in store security and 21 years as a bail bondswoman with her father’s Thomas E. Short Company. In 1986, she graduated from the police academy and became a dispatcher before moving into patrol and rising through the ranks to Sergeant, Lieutenant and Chief of Police in Miami City, Ohio. She served as chief for 15 years and retired in 2004 as the department’s only woman officer. She also taught basic police academics at Edison State Community College for 10 years. Vickie remembers a community-focused career filled with bike rodeos, helmet giveaways, infant car seat installations and traffic patrol. Fortunately, she only had to draw her gun twice. Larry joined the Army after graduating high school in 1982, training in air defense and missile systems. In 1991, he was activated during Operation Desert Storm, serving in Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Kuwait. During six years stationed in Germany, he suffered hearing loss from a terrorist bombing at a PX in Frankfurt that injured 34 people. He later served at 14 Fort Stewart, Georgia, and spent seven years as an Army recruiter in Dayton, Ohio, before retiring. “I really loved the Army. That was the foundation for me to get started in life. It guided me in the right direction,” he said. After the Army, Larry attended fire and paramedic school and spent 20 years with Ohio’s Clearcreek Fire District, eventually becoming Lieutenant and Fire Marshal. He also taught basic life support and advanced cardiac life support at Edison State Community College for 10 years. “I loved to serve, twenty years Army and twenty years fire service. I miss it,” he said. Their adventures continued after they sold their Ohio home in 2017 and moved into an RV at WrightPatterson Air Force Base’s campground in Dayton. For 10 years, they managed the 54-site campground, overseeing lawn care, boat rentals and organized activities. Downsizing from a 5,000square-foot house to a 500-square-foot motor home took some adjustment, Vickie recalled! After four years as snowbirds, they retired and settled full-time in Lake Ashton. Their travels have taken them to 45 states and much of the world. Most recently, they spent three months traveling to Alaska, where they were lucky enough to see both Mount Rainier and Mount McKinley without cloud cover. They even spotted more wildlife in Canada than in Alaska! Their two boxers, Oakley and Halo, are constant travel companions. At home, Larry and Vickie enjoy spending time with their grandchildren, visiting Disney as annual passholders, golfing, playing pickleball and Bingo, and relaxing in their swimming pool. From military service and public safety to firefighting and community service, Larry and Vickie have dedicated their lives to helping others. They’re another wonderful reason Lake Ashton is “Simply the Best.”

L.A. LOOKS Wildlife Corner Photo & Article By Barbara Ann Comer The Boat-tailed Grackle is a common year-round resident of Lake Ashton that cannot be missed! This large, gregarious blackbird is loud! The male (right) is an iridescent blue-black with a long, keel-shaped tail. The female (top left) leads most observers to believe they are seeing a completely different species. She is tawny-brown with slightly darker wings and tail and is smaller than the male. Their vocalizations sound like noisy, nonsensical chatter. Usually found near the water or at bird feeders their flamboyant demeanor calls attention to themselves. An interesting fact is that the ones south of Gainesville have dark eyes while those farther north have yellow eyes. The male Boattailed Grackles strut around boldly on long legs with their tails cocked up. Males (often in small groups) point their bills straight up into the air attempting to attract the ladies. Bird Watching with Barbara Monday November 23 at 8 am Please meet at 8 am at the Clubhouse West Parking Lot in your golf cart for an 8:10 am departure. We plan to tour the east course via golf carts in search of birds. “Cart-pooling” is encouraged. Please bring binoculars, water, hats and sunglasses. Be prepared and wear sunscreen or clothing that will protect you from the sun. We plan to bird for about 1 to 2 hours maximum. 16 LA (LW) HOA CORNER By Charles Roland A spirit of “THANKS” and “GIVING” is in the air as we welcome back familiar faces, reconnect with friends we’ve made along the way, and greet new residents. The co-sponsored Good Neighbors Day offered some much-needed camaraderie. The HOA Board extends a special thank-you to everyone who participates and shares feedback to help keep our community beautiful, friendly and compliant. There are several opportunities to get involved with the HOA Board, committees and subcommittees, helping provide continuity and improve communication throughout our beautiful community. As mentioned, two Board members’ terms are set to expire in 2027, and we are looking for a nominating committee. Your vote and your voice count, and community participation is essential to keeping our association strong. We are also working on the 2027 budget and continually reviewing guidelines and new technologies that homeowners may find useful, while remaining mindful of the natural beauty of our homes. The guidelines are posted on the HOA website at https://stambaugh.cincwebaxis.com/account/ loginmodernthemes as soon as they are available. New homeowners will receive a copy in their welcome packet at the Clubhouse. Any exterior changes to your home will likely require an Architectural Review Committee (ARC) request through the ARC Tracker. If you need assistance with the ARC Tracker software, our dedicated ARC Committee members are ready to help. Please also check your email regularly, as additional information or questions may be sent regarding your request. A reminder that a suggestion box is located next to the bulletin board near the bowling alley for residents who prefer to share their thoughts in writing. To receive email notifications from the Lake Ashton HOA, residents must submit a completed email authorization form to the management company, Stambaugh. For assistance, call 863-324-5100. Finally, please remember to say “thank you” to the dedicated volunteers who give their time and energy to our association. Their efforts help make Lake Ashton the wonderful community we all enjoy.

The HOA has five flyer slots at the top of the flyer board at the Health and Fitness Center (HFC). These currently contain Email Contact Authorization forms and various informational flyers about the HOA and the Architectural Review Committee (ARC). We will soon add flyers about compliance. You can pick up a copy from our flyer slots, fill out the requested information, and either mail it back to Stambaugh or place it in the white HOA mailbox at the HFC. Without your authorization, privacy laws prevent us from contacting you by email. The Lake Ashton II (WH) HOA website is https:// stambaugh.cincwebaxis.com. The Architectural Review Committee (ARC) meets on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at 1 pm at the HFC. Please check with the front desk for the meeting location. To contact the ARC, follow the instructions in ARC Tracker at https:// www.arctracker.com/la. ADOPT-A-ROAD CLEANUP By Linda Sandel A Lake Ashton quarterly litter clean-up event is scheduled for Thompson Nursery Road on Thursday, November 12. Meet in the Clubhouse Ballroom beginning at 8:30 am to pick up trash bags, gloves, safety vests and trash grabbers. Volunteers receive a free t-shirt and Bok Tower ticket each calendar year. Please sign-up with Linda Sandel at 863-368-0699 or Sandelly7@gmail.com. Thank you for helping to keep our community beautiful! SAFEGUARD STORM DRAINS Please do not place yard debris and clippings on top or near stormwater inlets (as shown here). This could get into the stormwater system causing damage or clogging the system which could lead to localized flooding. The District, made up of Lake Ashton residents, are responsible for the maintenance of the stormwater system within Lake Ashton so damages come out of the budget which is largely funded by resident assessments. Let’s all work together to extend the life of our infrastructure. SAFETY NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH (NW) CORNER By Fay Wood, NW Chief Know the Current Scams As the holidays approach, the Lake Ashton Neighborhood Watch team reminds residents to stay alert to scams and fraud targeting older adults. Knowing the warning signs and asking the right questions can help protect you, your finances and your neighbors. Romance Scams: Fraudsters build online relationships before asking for money for medical emergencies, travel or other expenses. Consider: Have you ever met this person in person? Do their claims of being a celebrity or working overseas seem suspicious? Are you feeling pressured to send money? Try an image search to see if their photo appears elsewhere online. Tech Support and Phantom Hacker Scams: Scammers pose as technical support or law enforcement, claiming your device or accounts have been hacked. Consider: Did a pop-up warn you of a problem and offer help? Was access to your device or account requested? Have you consulted someone you trust before responding? Never move money to a socalled “safer” account, and verify any law enforcement officer’s identity independently. Grandparent Scams: Callers impersonate grandchildren in urgent trouble and may insist you keep the situation secret. Consider: Are you being pressured to act immediately? Have you verified the child's location with family? Is there a family safe word, or can you ask questions only your grandchild would know? Phishing Scams: Fake emails and texts may imitate banks or other legitimate businesses. Consider: Are you being asked to click a link or provide passwords or account information? Does the sender’s email domain match the company? Never use links in suspicious messages; contact the company using a verified phone number or website. Lottery and Government Grant Scams: Scammers claim you’ve won a prize but demand fees to collect it. Consider: Did you enter a contest? Is payment required to receive your prize? Are they rushing you to respond? Legitimate prizes do not require upfront payments to claim winnings. Government Impersonation: Fraudsters threaten arrest or legal action over supposed unpaid taxes or fines. Consider: Did you independently look up the agency’s number and call directly? Are they demanding payment through gift cards, wire transfers or cryptocurrency? These are major warning signs. Remember to take a step back, verify identities, protect personal information, keep devices updated and hang up or log off if something feels wrong. If you see something, say something! Stickers listing local police and Sheriff’s Office telephone numbers are available at the Health & Fitness Center and Clubhouse desks. 20

STORM SEASON REMINDER Hurricane season runs through November 30, and residents are encouraged to stay prepared and alert. Please review your emergency plans, check supplies, and ensure you’re signed up for local alerts. LAKE ASHTON CERT By Ernie Harben Want to learn valuable emergency skills while helping your neighbors? Lake Ashton CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) is looking for residents who want to get involved and make a difference in our community.CERT volunteers receive training to support their neighbors during emergencies and disasters, while also building practical skills in preparedness, response and basic life safety. It’s an opportunity to meet fellow residents, contribute to a stronger, safer Lake Ashton, and be part of a team that is ready to help when needed. No special experience is required—just a willingness to learn and lend a hand. For more information or to get involved, contact ghbishop@gmail.com. PEDESTRIAN SAFETY With the return to standard time, the sun sets earlier, meaning walkers, runners, bicyclists and golf cart drivers may encounter low-visibility conditions in the evening. Everyone can help keep Lake Ashton safe by staying alert and following traffic rules. All vehicles, including golf carts and bicycles, must obey stop signs and the 20 mph speed limit throughout Lake Ashton. Drivers should watch for pedestrians and bicyclists at all times. Following posted speed limits and traffic signs can help prevent accidents and save lives. Be Safe & Be Seen: Make Yourself Visible to Drivers! • Wear bright or light-colored clothing and reflective materials. • Carry a flashlight when visibility is poor. • Cross streets in well-lit areas. • Stand clear of buses, hedges, parked cars and other obstacles before crossing. • Walk facing traffic so you can see oncoming vehicles. Bicyclists should ride with traffic and follow the same direction-of-travel laws as other vehicles. !"#$%#$& '()*#+(, -.()(/ ! #$%&'$()&*+ ,-)$.&/. ! #$%&'$()&*+ 0()$.&/. ! 1/22$.3&*+ ,-)$.&/. ! 1/22$.3&*+ 0()$.&/. !"## %&'()*'#& %%%0",'(-./"&,-/&.01"2 0($*() 2"345) !"#$%&'( )'&*'(+",'(-./"&,-/&.01"2 34567 9:;#5<=: 21 67,%#$ 2"345) !"#$%&'( >?@./&+",'(-./"&,-/&.01"2 39<=7 =4A#99:< Veteran Owned & Operated Family Owned

LA BLACK HERITAGE CLUB By Pamela June November is significant for U.S. Historic Firsts and the Power of the Vote. 1938: Crystal Bird Fauset of Pennsylvania became the first Black woman elected to a U.S. state legislature, breaking racial and gender barriers. 32 1989: L. Douglas Wilder of Virginia became the first Black American elected governor of a U.S. state. 1992: Carol Moseley Braun of Illinois became the first Black woman elected to the U.S. Senate. 2008: Barack Obama became the first Black American elected President of the United States. These achievements came despite racial discrimination practices to deny political participation. Many marched, protested, were beaten, imprisoned, and even died to secure the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Voting is a cornerstone of democracy. The opportunity to choose who represents us and who makes decisions affecting our communities and country. Election Day is November 3. The first recurring games began in 1975 in Sanford, Florida.” Today, several Senior Games events are held throughout Florida each year, including one in Polk County each March.
