LA PICKLEBALL By Dennis Santino The Lake Ashton Pickleball Association (LAPA) would like to welcome all our snowbirds back to Lake Ashton! We had a successful and fun summer season, and the fun continues. Our mixed doubles tournament takes place on Monday nights, with the shootout scheduled for November 14. Come out and support your favorite team! Our Halloween games were a big success, with lots of fun and some interesting costumes. The winners were not available at the time of publication, but we look forward to sharing the results! LAPA now has 190 members, and our Board of Directors election is coming up in January. We encourage members to start thinking about nominations for President, Vice President, Treasurer and At-Large positions. Each board before us has continued to improve the playing experience for our members, and we want to keep that momentum going. If you’re interested in running for an open position or would like to nominate someone, please contact Mark McDuff, who can explain the process. Let’s continue growing our membership and making Lake Ashton pickleball an even more fun and rewarding experience! Coaches Corner: Working together makes a team successful. Let’s continue working as a team, members and board alike, to keep improving the pickleball experience for everyone! LA SWIM CLUB By Sandy White Congratulations to LA Swim Club swimmer Steve Armstrong for bringing home two gold medals and two silver medals from the Virginia Senior Games swim championships in September! Over the years, many LASC swimmers have earned medals in Senior Games swim meets, and we hope to see even more swimmers compete in this and future seasons. Senior Games competitions are open to adults ages 50 and older, with competition divided by gender and five-year age groups. 34 A little history of the National Senior Games movement, from nsga.com: “In the mid-1960s, the National Recreation Association…developed a ‘Lifetime Sports’ program, which emphasized getting individuals involved in sports which they could compete in throughout their life span…. [In 1970] Warren W. Blaney, a Los Angeles businessman, staged the first ‘Senior Olympics’ in Los Angeles…. From there, the movement spread from California to other states. The first recurring games began in 1975 in Sanford, Florida.” Today, several Senior Games events are held throughout Florida each year, including one in Polk County each March. LASC will be represented at Sanford’s 51st annual Golden Age Games on November 8 from 9 am to noon at the Sanford Seminole Aquatic Center. Come cheer on our team! LA Swim Club is made up of both fitness and competitive swimmers. Anyone who can swim two lengths of the pool is invited to join us Mondays and Wednesdays from 1 to 2 pm and Saturdays from 10 to 11 am at the HFC Indoor Pool.
