LA BLACK HERITAGE CLUB By Pamela June November is significant for U.S. Historic Firsts and the Power of the Vote. 1938: Crystal Bird Fauset of Pennsylvania became the first Black woman elected to a U.S. state legislature, breaking racial and gender barriers. 32 1989: L. Douglas Wilder of Virginia became the first Black American elected governor of a U.S. state. 1992: Carol Moseley Braun of Illinois became the first Black woman elected to the U.S. Senate. 2008: Barack Obama became the first Black American elected President of the United States. These achievements came despite racial discrimination practices to deny political participation. Many marched, protested, were beaten, imprisoned, and even died to secure the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Voting is a cornerstone of democracy. The opportunity to choose who represents us and who makes decisions affecting our communities and country. Election Day is November 3. LABHC honors those who fought for voting rights and encourages everyone to learn about the candidates, understand the issues, and participate in the democratic process.
