November is a great time to reflect on everything to be thankful for, including beautiful sunny skies and living in a community full of caring friends and neighbors. Joyful conversations have been filling the Clubhouse as yearround residents reunite with seasonal travelers. With the population at Lake Ashton increasing residents should be mindful of the changes in traffic at Lake Ashton. Many residents are out and about enjoying the cooler temps and lower humidity and should be able to do so in a safe environment. The time change on November 6 will bring darkness earlier than past months. Be sure to be prepared and wear reflective clothing or bring a flashlight along if walking at dusk or later. In this edition of the LA Times, residents will see why Lake Ashton stands out. Residents will have many opportunities to celebrate the upcoming holidays and give back to the communities surrounding Lake Ashton. Soon Lake Ashton will sparkle with exterior lights and holiday decorations to get everyone in the spirit of the holidays. This is truly the most wonderful time of year … enjoy it! On October 17, the LA(LW)CDD Board of Supervisors met and approved of several landscaping projects to include Phase 1 of the refurbishment of Lake Ashton Blvd, the cleaning up of areas bordering the golf course near the entrance. In addition, the median in the West parking lot is getting a new look that will include the removal of rock and installation of planted ground cover. Past meeting minutes, full agenda packets, annual budgets, and an upcoming meeting schedule can all be found on lakeashtoncdd.com. The Request for Proposal for Restaurant Services deadline is November 10. Proposals will be reviewed at the Board of Supervisors Meeting on November 28. Staff is working hard to establish cost savings measures at the Clubhouse that will show immediate and long term benefits for residents. A detailed report of all the savings thus far and future areas that are being explored can be found on lakeashtoncdd.com under "Other District Documents". Congratulations to the Reelected and Elected LA(LW)CDD Board Members All three seats that were up for election on the LACDD Board of Supervisors ran unopposed so they will not be listed on the ballot for the November 8 election. Congratulations to Mike Costello and Debby Landgrebe for being reelected for another 4 year term and to Brenda Van Sickle who will join the Board. Thank you to Bob Plummer for all his hard work and dedication to the residents of Lake Wales over the past 4 years. Nothing is perfect, but Lake Ashton checks off many of the boxes. Two golf courses, two restaurants, two clubhouses, and a pro shop all offer scores of amenities and opportunities to live the good life. All are set within the beauty that Central Florida offers. Staff sees residents who care enough to volunteer at various events as well as outside entities. Also, leaders of activities give of their time to ensure activities are well presented. The Boards are made up of leaders who handle the monetary, structural, and ethical aspects of life at Lake Ashton. When a resident shares a thank you or other positive comment to staff, Board members or other residents, that’s what makes Lake Ashton stand out above other communities. Weber Environmental was awarded the new landscaping contract for LA II CDD. The lift stations and other areas of landscaping projects were also discussed. Warren Construction received approval for their bid for the new roof on the HFC. The bridge by the driving range and Hogan Lane received damage during the recent hurricane and is closed at the time of this writing. There were downed trees, fences, stop signs, roof tiles lifted, as well as two areas of cart path lifted from overturned oak trees also needing attention following Ian. Photos were taken and submitted for insurance purposes. The Joint Boards of Directors met on October 17th and directed both Community Directors to schedule only through January of 2023 at the designated time in December, as the next meeting will be held on January 20th. when the Joint Amenities Policy will hopefully be approved for implementation. Copies of the proposed Joint Amenities Policies are available at both Lake Ashton I CDD and Lake Ashton II CDD websites. On Monday, November 7th, the HOA will be transferred to the LA II CDD residents, thus closing another chapter in the creation of Lake Ashton as one owned and run by its residents. The next LA II CDD Board meeting was rescheduled for Tuesday, November 29th, when the new Board members will be installed. 10
NATIONAL ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE MONTH In 1983, President Reagan dedicated the month of November as National Alzheimer's Disease Month. Don't forget to support Team Sam and the Walk to End Alzheimer's by attending the Hats on for Alzheimer's. You can also give a monetary donation to the Walk to End Alzheimer’s donation box, located in the Activities Office the entire month. Each person who donates any amount will receive a purple memory marker to be displayed in the Ballroom during the Hats on for Alzheimer's event. You can write the name of someone who is currently suffering, someone who has passed on, or whatever you choose on the memory marker. The markers can be picked up at the Activities Desk. GIVING TUESDAY There is so much to be thankful for and so many blessings to count! In the spirit of Giving Tuesday, help give back to the community by donating to the Lake Wales Care Center. A donation truck will be in the Clubhouse West Parking Lot November 29 from 9 am to noon. If you would like to donate any large items or large pieces of furniture, please set up a pick-up date with the Care Center by calling 863-676-6678 so they may come to your home and collect the items. THANKFUL BOARD The Clubhouse Lobby will have a Thankful Board on display during the month of November where residents can write on a fall leaf what they are thankful for and display for all to see. For the last few years, the Toys for Tots box has been in the HFC, which will once again be the location for this opportunity for giving beginning mid-November. Early this month the Caring Tree will be in the Clubhouse Ballroom loaded with give tags. These tags are suggestions for gifts that will be given to deserving families in partnership with the Lake Wales Care Center. The gifts must be new and unwrapped. We will collect the gifts and deliver them to the Care Center's distribution center. Parents will select a gift for their family and volunteers will help them with wrapping. Lake Ashton has been a strong supporter of this very worthwhile activity for over 14 years and we are happy to continue this endeavor. Remember the items on the tags are suggestions, so if you see something else that you think a child or teen will appreciate, go ahead and purchase it. Watch for an email blast notification once the tree is up. The last day to bring gifts is December 16. ELECTION DAY NOVEMBER 8 The General Election will be held on Tuesday, November 8 and all Florida registered voters will vote in the Clubhouse Ballroom, from 7 am – 7 pm. Please note there will be no movie showings on this day. In addition to voting for Governor, judicial candidates and various amendments, Lake Ashton residents who live in Winter Haven will vote to fill one seat up for election on the LAIICDD Board of Supervisors. FRIENDLY REMINDER Residents are entitled to equal opportunity enjoyment of the amenities here at Lake Ashton. Differing opinions and beliefs should not turn into fights and arguments among neighbors. Diversity should be embraced and neighbors should be treated with respect whether you agree with their thoughts, beliefs, and opinions, or not. If someone says something that you feel is derogatory please contact staff or security immediately so the situation can be addressed appropriately to avoid an uncomfortable or controversial situation among neighbors. IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY AT THE CLUBHOUSE No one plans on an emergency occurring while enjoying themselves at Lake Ashton, but should one happen, there are various emergency assistance items located throughout the Clubhouse that can help. The first step should always be to call 911 — remember, every second counts. There is an outdoor emergency phone near the East entrance gate of the Clubhouse, next to the 14 large pool rules sign. This emergency phone can be used to contact 911 responders. The phone has a single push button, and an attendant will answer the call within 30 seconds to dispatch emergency responders. All dispatchers are CPR certified to assist with emergencies over the phone until help arrives. The emergency phone allows for automatic identification of the Lake Ashton Clubhouse address. There is also an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and first aid kit located next to the restrooms across from the Restaurant in the Clubhouse as well as on the roving patrol cart. If you need help locating these lifesaving items, please ask a Clubhouse staff member. AT T E N T I O N C L U B H O U S E GROUP FACILITATORS On December 1 group facilitators will receive an email with an electronic form to complete in order to renew recurring reservations at the Clubhouse for 2023. LITTER CLEANUP A Lake Ashton quarterly litter clean-up event is scheduled for Thompson Nursery Road from Hwy. 27 to County Road 653 on November 17th at 9:00 a.m. Please meet at the Clubhouse ballroom to pick up safety vests, trash bags, gloves and trash grabbers. LA LOOKS Native Flowers of Central Florida By Lynn Davis Scarlet Sage also goes by the names of Tropical Sage and Blood Sage. This Native Flower is considered a short-lived perennial. However, it often selfseeds. It can grow to 18-36 inches in height. It’s best to cut back the plant once the flowers are spent. This will encourage a more showy display. The blooming period for this perennial is from Summer through Fall in Central Florida. Scarlet Sage does best in full sun or afternoon shade. It likes moist and well-drained soils. Why plant scarlet sage in your yard? The tubular red flower attracts hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees. It is a low-maintenance and provides a low-cost advantage. Though it’s nonedible, it’s sometimes used for medicinal purposes. For more information visit Florida Native Plant Society. LAKE ASHTON WETLANDS AND CONSERVATION AREAS There are numerous wetlands in Lake Ashton that serve important purposes for our community. Wetlands provide a variety of functions, including flood storage, water quality enhancement, and a habitat for threatened and endangered species. Wetlands in Lake Ashton serve as filters for the 16 storm water retention ponds. Then, this water travels to Lake Ashton. Once the water reaches the lake, it will pass via the outfall structure, which is situated on the lake's southwest shore (pictured). The water will then move on to Peace Creek before arriving at the Peace River. Extreme rainfall can cause Peace River to overflow and flood. This may result in higher than usual lake and pond water levels, which will be felt by the residents. To make sure that our wetlands are properly managed, Lake Ashton CDD personnel constantly collaborates with our aquatic vendor. Wildlife Corner Photo & Article By Barbara Ann Comer The Tricolored Heron is a delicate heron superficially resembling the Great Blue but much smaller and dainty. It is about the same size as a Snowy Egret. If seen from the back it looks mostly blue and tan, but the front of the neck and the belly are white. It was formerly called the Louisiana Heron, but the name was changed to match a description of this blue, white and tan bird. The immature bird is striking with its chestnut hindneck and wing coverts. Tricoloreds can be found at any body of water in Lake Ashton fishing quietly at the water's edge. Their usual method is to stand still and wait for prey to unsuspectingly come within reach, however sometimes they stir the bottom sediments with a foot and dash around in pursuit of fish. They are solitary in their foraging for fish, insects, tadpoles, frogs, lizards and spiders. The ones in Florida are mainly non-migratory. LA ( LW) HOA CORNER By Nancy Baker & Debbie Holmes Members of our Homeowners association are bound by agreements known as HOA Covenants. As such, before you buy a home in a Deed restricted community it is very important that you familiarize yourself with the covenants and guidelines that you must follow. This will prevent any conflict with the Covenant enforcement group. The purpose of HOA Covenants? HOA’S serve a specific function - to govern and regulate the community with the goal of protecting or improving property values. One-way HOA’s do this is through creating and enforcing covenants/ guidelines. Examples of restrictive covenants: 17 Property Maintenance: The HOA will require you to maintain your lawn and landscaping as well as apply a fresh coat of paint to the exterior of your home as needed, along with other compliance guidelines. Exterior appearance: HOA’s commonly place limitations on the appearance of your home’s exterior. One of many items includes what color paint you can use, what you can hang on the exterior walls, or roofing shingle colors. Property Alterations and Additions: Many associations place restrictions on what you can change or add to the exterior of your property, any question or doubt contact your ARC committee. The HOA and the ARC serve to help all homeowners and the goal is to simplify the ARC process. To reach the HOA Directors as a group, email directors@lakeashtonhoa.org. SAFETY NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH By Fay Wood, NW Chief Holiday Shopping Tips (Courtesy of Law Enforcement) You can play a key role in preventing crime during the very busy shopping season! • Shop with family or friends. There is safety in numbers! • If shopping while dark, park in a well-lit area. Avoid poorly lighted sections of parking lots. • Lock your packages in the trunk and consider taking a quick trip home to unload periodically. • Keep vehicle doors locked and windows closed. • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Pay for purchases with check, debit or credit card. • Try to avoid ATMs if at all possible. • Don’t try to carry too many packages to your vehicle. If needed, make multiple trips to not be overburdened leaving the opportunity of being caught off guard and vulnerable. • Be aware of surroundings. If you see something suspicious, call 9-1-1 immediately! • Shopping with grandchildren? Take their picture using your phone just before leaving the house so you have the most updated photo including clothing description in case you get separated. Enjoy your shopping, but be smart, be aware and be safe! CITIZENS ASSISTED PATROL (CAP) By Mike Weissberg Citizens Assisted Patrol (CAP) is always looking for more volunteers to patrol the streets. Come help be the eyes, ears, and presence for the Sheriff’s department. Patrols are once a week for two hours. Applications are available in the Clubhouse and HFC. CHILI COOK-OFF By David Harrison The LA Purple Stars will have a chili cook-off as a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society January 20, 2023 from 4 to 6 pm in the Clubhouse Ballroom. This event was held last year and was a great success. There will be twenty different chilis, cornbread, water and a baked goods table. There will be separate sign up sheets at the Clubhouse Activities Desk for the chili cookers and baked goods which should be individually wrapped for the dessert table. Tasting tickets can also be purchased at the Clubhouse — 12 Tickets for a $10 donation, limited to 200 strips of 12. Each ticket allows you to taste one chili, so you should buy 24 tickets to taste all of them. Corn bread, water and dessert table are cash sales, $1/item. Don't miss this chance to warm up with many varieties of chili. There will be judges for the "best" chili and prizes will be awarded for first and second place. Questions? GOLF LALGA By Lydia Fichtman The LALGA welcomes the Snowbirds back to Lake Ashton. The courses are full of excitement with our returning friends and neighbors. The event calendar is plenty full starting with the LALGA Pink Ribbon Breast Cancer Golf Tournament on November 8. Please support this cause by playing and sponsoring the event. You may also purchase raffle tickets for the over 150 raffle prizes. In addition, there will be a silent auction for everything from golf cart batteries to private golf courses to boat cruises. Purchasing pink ribbons, socks, shoelaces, water bottles and memory bouquets for $5 each will also help the cause. The league thanks all involved in advance for your continued support. The opening day luncheon is set for the following week, November 15. In addition to opening day, please note the following important 2022-2023 dates: December 13 – Holiday Luncheon; January 16-17 Solheim Cup; February 13-14 MemberMember; March 28-29 LALGA-LAMGA; and April 11 – Closing Day Luncheon. The Martinis, Mulligans and Munchies Tournament will be rescheduled for the spring. Unfortunately, Hurricane Ian made it impossible to host the event this year. Spotlight on Renée Hicks: Renée was raised on a wheat farm near South Haven, Michigan. She attended a one-room school house from kindergarten through seventh grade. Renée attended Ferris State College in Big Rapids, Michigan where she met her first husband. They married in November of 1969 and, as he was in the service, they moved to San Antonio and then to Okinawa. They have two children who currently live in Michigan. After their divorce in 1991, Renée continued raising the children as a single mom for ten years. In late 1999 Renée met her now husband of 22 years, Tom, and they were married in October of 2000 and lived on a mountain near Front Royal, Virginia. Tom and Renée worked at the State Department and U.S. Department of Agriculture, respectively, in Washington, D.C. until they retired. Seven years ago Tom and Renée decided they had had enough of the cold weather and snow and moved into her mom’s former home in Lake Region Village, near Haines City. After Hurricane Irma and the continuing threat of hurricanes, they decided to move into a more stable environment and chose Lake Ashton, building their new home, and moving here in August of 2021. Renée initially joined the Niners. She played a Mixers event with Dawn Neigh and Dawn suggested that she play with the LALGA. She has thoroughly enjoyed playing with both groups but loves the competitiveness of the LALGA. Renée and Tom have been playing golf consistently since 2003 and she and Tom have golfed all over the world including Ireland, Jamaica, and Mexico. She has played several times at The TPC Sawgrass. Renée and Tom enjoy traveling, reading, billiards and computers and she likes walking, biking, and cooking. Welcome Renée to the LALGA!
LA NINERS By Marti Schmidt Here’s hoping all of you survived Hurricane Ian with minimal impact. To date, the East course continues to struggle with water accumulation and limited use of all 18-holes (1-4 are still closed and 5-8 still have cart path water issues). Opening Day was pushed back to October 18 and our winter starting time returned to 9:30 am. Full update in the next issue! Just a few reminders as we swing into our winter season: please wear your name tags as we have a LOT of new members. Arrive early/timely (20 minutes before league start time) to find your partners and hear the morning announcements. Always be on the lookout for wet areas on both courses – it might be a while for them to completely dry out. CLUBS BOLLA By Linda Warden Blankets of Love at Lake Ashton has had a busy summer getting blankets and ponchos ready for delivery to the local Polk County Schools for for fall. A BIG thank you to the delivery team this year Chris Crane, Kate Delles, Barb Aull, Diane Taylor, Lynne Judd, Beth Wagner and Alice Hearn. The elementary schools have received 240 blankets and 90 ponchos. The group has also delivered 425 blankets to several Polk County Agencies that serve children and teens in crisis. Before the Christmas season BOLLA will deliver another 330 blankets to other Polk County Agencies and of course we always give blankets for the Lake Wales Care Center Christmas Tree here at Lake Ashton. If you have a little time on Monday afternoon come to the Clubhouse Craft Room at 1 pm to tie knots and prepare blankets. No sewing required! LA GARDEN CLUB By Lynn Davis Baffled at what happened to a once thriving plant? Attended a garden show or seminar and would like to share? Join the LA Ashton Garden Club on November 9 at 10 am in the Pavilion. After a presentation it's not unusual for members to begin discussions on many plant issues. Last month Sil Wells and Pam Klawinski demonstrated how to create a flower arrangement placed on a frame. The use of double sided velcro made it interchangeable, depending on seasons. In addition members discussed future meetings, including the one in November. Pumpkin and succulent fans should plan on attending for a chance to participate in a prize drawing. Sil Wells will demonstrate how to create a reusable Fall Themed succulent display. It'll be available for the drawing after the meeting. Come and share your expertise, garden problems, solutions or just socialize. LA DEMOCRATIC CLUB By Shelley Miller The Lake Ashton Democratic Club is holding their next monthly meeting November 3 via Zoom and inperson at the HFC. The November speaker is Steve Whitaker from Victory Ridge Academy, a public charter school serving special needs children with communication deficits, emotional/behavioral challenges, and physical disabilities. Membership is $10 per person per year, or three years for $25. The money is used for pickleball events, balls, windsocks, and various court equipment, etc. To join the club, simply stop by the LA Clubhouse (not HFC) and fill out the membership form and bring a check made out to LAPA. If you haven’t been by the pickleball courts lately, you need to stop by and see the beautiful newly resurfaced courts! A new net was also installed on Court 3. The club is very thankful the LAIICDD agreed to improve this very popular community amenity. His history is spun through the eyes of one family, with roots to the native Seminoles to development ties of the Keys bridge, railroads, and even Bok Tower.
Mr. Connors, born in Chicago, Illinois, has published more than 1,000 human-interest stories, features and commentaries. He is a former magazine managing editor, journalist, newspaper editorial writer and former Florida County Commissioner. He and his wife Susan reside in Lake Wales. LA ROCKERS By Connie Strassberg Hard to believe that the holiday season is already here. November is the time to think about pumpkins and turkeys, family and friends, and what we feel grateful for and thankful about. The group’s rock painting revolves around themes related to the upcoming holidays and their colors. Rocks are hidden around Lake Ashton to fulfill the mission: “one message at just the right moment can change someone’s entire day, outlook, and life.” LA Rockers continues to meet in the HFC Community Center on alternate Wednesdays from 2 to 4 pm. Various members will continue to share their skills as we paint and schmooze with our Rocker friends. Newcomers are always welcome and you will be lent the supplies you will need for your first meeting. SINGLES CLUB By Maureen Ziegler LA Singles is a social group that plans activities for single residents. The group meets monthly on the first Sunday of the month at 2 pm in the Clubhouse Ballroom. In October, the group discussed several outings and get togethers. Plans were discussed for dinners and lunches during October, Lunch at the Cherry Pocket Steak and Seafood and dinner at Tanners. The Single Mingle held on the third Thursday of the month will return to the Pavilion. The Group also decided to purchase Christmas gifts for 12 Senior Orphans. If you would like to take part in activities with other singles, attend the meeting on November 6. LA TRAVELERS By Carolyn Bishop Welcome home to all seasonal travelers! Stories from Maine to California and Mexico to Alaska are being shared by many members during the Social on Tuesdays from 3:30 to 5 pm in the Clubhouse Ballroom. The LA Travelers Annual Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, November 8, and will take place in the Restaurant at 2:30 pm. It is essential for members to attend this once a year meeting where officers will be elected and other valuable information will be shared. Tickets for the Holiday Dinner Party December 4 will also go on sale at this meeting. Tickets are $30 for members and $40 for their guests. LA SWIM CLUB By Sandy White Despite swimmers out of water, due to heater fuel issues in October, the LA Swim Cl ub membe r s , whether they are fitness or competitive swimmers, have found ways to keep in shape. Different ones have been s po t t ed a t t he outdoor pool, both fitness centers, walking, and riding bikes. This extra activity has been especially important for those aiming for the Golden Age Games in Sanford on November 6 and the Florida Senior Games in Temple Terrace December 3 & 4. To compete in the Florida Senior Games, one must place in the top five in a regional meet. It's exciting to announce that The LA Swim Club is proud to be a Platinum sponsor of the LA Pink Ribbon Golf Tournament in support of breast cancer research. IN MEMORIAM Frank Duffy, a longtime resident, recently passed away. His wife, Geri Duffy, donated a bench and the golf group Frank played with helped with the dedication on the driving range (pictured below). The bench (pictured above) is placed on the range for all to see, enjoy, and remember Frank. Frank was an excellent golfer, a former Illinois State Amateur Champion, and a fun guy to be with. He is sorely missed, but we take comfort in knowing he is in a better place. All are encouraged to get and stay fit. Did you know that even at 55 and over your muscles can get stronger? All are invited to join in the LA Swim Club workouts: Mondays at 6 pm, Wednesdays at 1:45 pm, and Saturdays at 10 am in the HFC Indoor Pool. There is no membership fee. The only prerequisite is the ability to swim at least 1 length of the pool of one or more of the standard strokes ( i .e. f ront crawl /f reestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, or butterfly). The LAVA Auxiliary is a group of your friends and neighbors who support the military through fund raising as well as simple actions like sending holiday cards to those serving abroad, donating clothing and other items to veteran nursing homes as well as the annual Girl Scout Cookie drive for the military. CAMERA CLUB By Larry Hillock The October meeting kicked off the 2022 – 2023 season. A lot of good suggestions were made as to potential club activities. GIFT WRAPPING & HOLIDAY BOWS CLASS If you’ve ever looked upon perfectly or artistically wrapped gifts with envy, now you can learn how to do it yourself! For only $5, you too can learn handson how to add some flair to your gift wrapping on December 7 at 10 am in the Clubhouse Ballroom. You can even learn how to make those gorgeous holiday bows that adorn gifts, wreaths, and more! Your bows and wrapped gifts will be the envy of all this Holiday Season!
