LACDD NEWS Residents are enjoying the many activities and entertainment options offered and are excited to be out and enjoying time with friends and neighbors. Monday Coffee in June brought many smiling residents back for coffee, donuts, and reminiscing with neighbors. In this edition of the LA Times residents will find even more options to get out of the house and enjoy the community. From a Moon Landing celebration with the band Paisley Craze, entertainment on the Ashton Tap & Grill patio, karaoke, health seminars, and trivia, to a Fourth of July golf cart parade, Par 3 golf tournament, pool party, and indoor cookout, there really is something for everyone to enjoy. The Board of Supervisors met June 21 and approved several improvements to the Clubhouse. New amenity signage, the addition of rock to various landscaping beds around the Clubhouse and main entrance, and new chairs for the Game Room were all approved and will be in place as soon as possible. In response to the Focus 2025 survey, a designated smoking area was established by Supervisors (see p. 10) and staff is working on other maintenance and low cost improvements that were highlighted by residents in the survey. Please refer to the email blast sent June 23 for more information regarding the decisions made at the meeting. As always residents are encouraged to attend monthly CDD meetings to obtain first hand information. Ashton Tap & Grill will release a new menu on July 5. Be sure to stop by and try some of the new options. Stay tuned to media for the introduction of new specials starting in July and don't forget brunch on Sundays. Stop by either Activities Desk during operating hours to register any guests. When registering be sure to get a calendar of events so your visitors know what activities are happening during their stay. All vehicles, including golf carts, must obey all stop signs and the 20 mph speed limit throughout Lake Ashton. Drivers, watch for pedestrians at all times. Obeying posted speed limit and traffic signs can help avert a potential tragedy. Staff is enjoying seeing residents again and catching up with residents who hadn’t been in the building in a while. With the summer heat, please don’t hesitate to come into the building for an air-conditioned walking/running trek around the Community Center. Heat exhaustion and even worse, heat stroke, can be avoided by doing so. We have added some new indoor/outdoor games and residents are really enjoying them! We are planning a corn hole tournament to be announced very soon, so get your team ready for some fun! Practice anytime. The Board is getting ready for the final budget approval for FY 2022 in August. Many hours of research and planning are done prior to this meeting and with the residents' best interests in mind. A lightning protection satellite device (the Golf Course has had the base set for years) has been approved and will be located outside the HFC Pool, for golfers, and other residents, but visible inside to swimmers as well. Automatic handicap door openers have been added to the restrooms inside the HFC. The Lake Ashton Connection is a monthly newsletter focusing on the activities and happenings at the HFC and Golf Course. It is not a formal publication, nor is it meant to compete in any way with the LA Times. NEW DESIGNATED SMOKING/VAPING AREA The Board of Supervisors voted to make the patio just outside of the Ballroom the designated smoking/vaping area at the Clubhouse for residents. The designated smoking area for employees is by the dumpster at the Clubhouse. Smoking/ Vaping is not permitted in any other area surrounding the Clubhouse including the Pet Play Park, Bocce Ball Courts, Shuffleboard Courts, Tennis Courts and Pavilion. Residents that see others smoking outside of the designated smoking areas should contact security at 863-324-7290.
PET POLICIES The Joint Amenity Facilities Policy states that dogs and all other pets (with the exception of service dogs) are not permitted at Amenity Facilities. In the event a special event is held, as previously approved by the Amenity Manager, and dogs are permitted as part of the special event, they must be leashed. Please refrain from bringing any pet (with the exception of service dogs) with you when coming to the Clubhouse Amenities. Dogs must also be leashed at all times in the community, with the exception of while at the Pet Play Parks. Since it is getting hotter outside and more residents will looking to exercise indoors, this month outlines the use of the Fitness Centers at the Clubhouse and HFC. Fitness centers are open daily during normal operating hours. 2. Patrons are encouraged to receive training on the apparatus before utilizing equipment 3. Each facility provides televisions for Patrons. Please be considerate when setting volume levels. 4. Individuals must be fourteen (14) years of age and older to use District Fitness Centers. Individuals 14-17 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. 5. Food, including chewing gum, is not permitted within the District Fitness Centers. Beverages, however, are permitted in the Fitness Centers if contained in non-breakable containers with screwtop or sealed lids. 6. Appropriate attire and footwear (covering the entire foot) must be worn at all times in the District Fitness Centers. Appropriate attire includes teeshirts, tank tops, shorts, and/or athletic wear (no swimsuits). 7. Each individual is responsible for wiping off fitness equipment after use with the antiseptic wipes provided by the Districts. 8. Use of personal trainers is permitted in the District Fitness Centers with approval from the Amenity Manager. 9. Hand chalk is not permitted to be used in the District Fitness Centers. 10. Radios, tape players, MP3 players and CD players are not permitted unless they are personal units equipped with headphones. 11. No bags, gear, or jackets are permitted on the floor of the District Fitness Centers or on the fitness equipment. 12. Weights or other fitness equipment may not be removed from the District Fitness Centers. 13. Limit use of cardiovascular equipment to thirty (30) minutes and step aside between multiple sets on weight equipment if other persons are waiting. 14. Be respectful of others. Allow other Patrons and Guests to also use equipment, especially the cardiovascular equipment. 15. Replace weights to their proper location after use. 16. Free-weights are not to be dropped and should be placed only on the floor or on equipment made specifically for storage of the weights. 17. Any fitness program operated, established and run by the Amenity Manager may have priority over other users of the District Fitness Centers. CLUBHOUSE FITNESS CENTER ORIENTATION RETURNS! INCIDENTS AT THE CLUBHOUSE Any incident that occurs at the Clubhouse or surrounding amenities should be immediately reported to the Club Office or Security. Security is available 24 hours a day (phone numbers on page 3). If reporting the incident immediately is not possible, please contact Christine Wells at 863.324.5457 as soon as you are able. It is important to document any incident, whether a substantial injury or a minor bruise. The process takes only about five minutes, and the information gathered is helpful in identifying potential areas that need attention. Remember to always call 9-1-1 first for all life threatening injuries and inform security and/or staff afterwards. LA LO O K S LAKE ASHTON (LAKE WALES) HOA CORNER Have you heard the HOA secured more services at less cost? Now, that’s a great combination and it is what’s happening with the hiring of the new management firm by the Lake Wales HOA! As of July 1 al l administrative responsibilities of the Lake Wales HOA are being handled by the Don Asher Group management firm. You will be receiving a welcome letter from the Asher firm letting you know they are on board and ready to serve. The new management firm will save the HOA about $25,000 per year rolling up the cost of former office manager duties and the cost of both the HOA website and financial software. Until the manager resigned in February the HOA was paying nearly $55,000 for the position. Now, with the Don Asher Group, the HOA will pay only $36,000 for more services than the HOA received from the former office manager and can eliminate the costs of website and financial software. In addition to all the legally required recordkeeping, the Don Asher firm will be handling the administration of all ARC requests for Lake Wales, all for less money. Members of the Lake Wales ARC will be approving or denying requests, but all other functions will be done by the management firm. That includes receiving the request, checking for completeness and making sure proper diagrams and descriptions are included in the request, and handing the request off for action by the ARC. The management firm will also be inspecting the community for architectural violations and sending residents reminders of violations. This will eliminate the necessity of ARC members confronting residents on ARC issues, as the violation process will be handled by the Asher firm. Accompanying this change to a professional management company will be some small changes in how you contact the Lake Wales HOA. There will be a new website name — all the information you want about the Lake Wales HOA will be located at lakeashtonhoa.org. All property owners in the Lake Wales portion of Lake Ashton are HOA members and should use this new website address to find all information relating to their individual HOA account. All general HOA documents, including governing documents, meeting minutes, ARC rules and all notices concerning the Lake Wales HOA can now be found on lakeashtonhoa.org. The HOA board is looking forward to smoother administrative operations at a cost savings to member s . SAFET Y N EIG HBORHOOD WAT C H 2021 NATIO NAL NIGHT OUT By Fay Wood, NW Chief National Night Out is an annual communitybuilding campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make Lake Ashton a safer, caring place to live. It enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community! This year the Lake Ashton National Night Out will be held August 3. A golf cart parade will take place at 7:30 pm starting at the HFC and ending at the Clubhouse. More information will be sent out by blast, so keep an eye open for them. Most people know that texting and talking on the phone while driving are dangerous activities. But they aren’t the only things that can distract you while you’re driving. Dashboard infotainment systems, navigation tools and even passengers can easily take your focus off the road. Distracted driving is a deadly problem— thousands of deaths have occurred, according to statistics from National Highway & Traffic. Tips that can help you avoid distractions while driving: • Put it away: Place your phone out of sight to prevent temptation. • Know where you’re going: Set your navigation system before driving. • Pull over: If you must call or text while driving, safely pull off the road and stop. • Ask passengers for help: Ask a passenger to help navigate, make a call or send a message. • Don’t be a distraction yourself: Avoid calling or texting others when you know they are driving. • Use “do not disturb”: Many phones have settings that silence incoming calls and messages while your phone is synced with your car. WILDLIFE ALER T Female alligators build a m o u n d n e s t o f s o i l , vegetation, or debris and deposit an average of 32 to 46 eggs in late June or early July. Incubation requires approximately 63-68 days, and hatching occurs from midAugust through early September. Alligators and crocodiles are an important part of Florida's heritage and play a valuable role in the ecosystems where they live. Those who live near lakes and ponds should expect to see alligators from time-totime but they should never be fed or approached. If you see an alligator: • Always give these reptiles a respectful distance — at least 10 feet — and always leave them alone • If you encounter an alligator outside its natural habitat, call the Nuisance Alligator Hotline: 1-866FWC-GATOR (392-4286). • Alligators are nocturnal animals, more active during the night. After dark, avoid fresh and brackish bodies of water, though alligators sometimes lurk in salt water. Unprovoked bites will often occur at the edge of the water. • Never feed alligators; it encourages them to lose their natural fear of people. • Small animals, like pets, and small children are generally more at risk than large adults. • Female alligators protect their nests by hissing and opening their mouths; this does not mean they are preparing to attack. • Alligators under 4 feet in length are not considered a threat to humans. The FWC has several rules that prohibit feeding wildlife, including bears, coyotes, foxes, raccoons, pelicans, sandhill cranes, bald eagles, and alligators.
CITIZEN’S ASSISTED PATROL By David Muller The Citizens' Assisted Patrol (CAP) is a service of the Polk County Sheriff's Office and Lake Ashton is fortunate to have it in place. The benefit is for both Lake Ashton and the Sheriff's Office. The program is a patrol and report program and it is NOT a law enforcement or emergency medical assistance program. According to the Sheriff's Office, communities with a CAP program have less crime than communities without a program. CAP allows the Sheriff's Office to use its resources on more urgent activities such as investigations, serving warrants, traffic control, court appearances for pending criminal cases, in general, responding to "911" calls. Because of CAP, "manpower" is freed up for these activities and not allocated to patrol our community looking for crimes or urgent situations requiring police or other emergency services. The Sheriff's Office gets "free labor" using volunteers but it gives the training, identifiable garb (uniform) and patrol and communication equipment. Lake Ashton benefits by showing the residents there is a patrol and report program looking for "out of the norm" situations to report to the Sheriff's Office. It also shows "bad actors" or would be criminals that someone is out on our streets looking for them. Not knowing when a patrol will come makes bad actors think twice about committing crimes. SIGN UP FOR ALERT POLK Prepare yourself this hurricane season by signing up to receive emergency notifications from Alert Polk. Communication is key in any emergency and knowing what information to pay attention to can make a difference. Polk County uses the Alert Polk system to inform county residents about public safety threats and concerns. During situations which may affect the health, safety and welfare of Polk’s residents, official messages are sent to telephone numbers and email addresses within the affected geographic area. As in the past, classic cars and other conveyances (bicycles, etc.) are welcome as well as golf carts. Come join your Lake Ashton neighbors and decorate your carts, cars or whatever, and “parade” through the community on the morning of America’s Birthday. GOLF UPD A TES FROM THE PRO SHOP By Ron LaVoie, General Manager The Membership for fiscal year 2020/2021 is 387 memberships which translate into 605 golfers. This is 114 more than prior year. There are 305 yearly members with 156 being couples and 149 are singles. There were 82 seasonal memberships, which is 18% to prior year. The Associate membership brought in 104 memberships with 39 being couples and 65 singles. New Home Membership now stands at 56 with hopes of converting 25% into full members. Overall dues were up 1.4% over prior year, but when you factor in the Associate Green Fees the club is up 8.1%. The orange tees on the West course have been changed so that it is now 3000 yards and will be rated this fall. Everyone can use them for a variety of reasons including older seniors on cart path only days, inviting neighbors out for a less intimidating round of golf, young kids when they visit during the season, or any member who would like to work on their short game. A par 3 course on the East will be set up for the Fourth of July tournament that will become permanent for the rest of the summer. Golf course maintenance has received new equipment! Two new greens mowers with two more on the way, a new rough unit and four new utility carts which were greatly needed. Golfers will be noticing a much better cut when they play. As we head into rainy season, please be aware, and avoid, all wet areas on the course. Fairways like 15 East and 11 West will be wet all summer no matter how much rain we receive and areas like front of 1 West and right of 17 East do the same. The membership has done a good job of riding two to a cart, especially our leagues and groups. The golf shop staff thanks all of you who have helped make this happen. Great fairways cannot be maintained with four carts in a group, so please partner-up when playing. Regarding Pro Shop emails, if you have checked all your folders and contacted the Pro Shop to ensure the correct email is on file, then the final move is to call Mary at the HFC. LAMGA By Paul Fichtman The June highlight event was the 2-day LAMGA Open held June 9 and 10. This was a Ryder Cup style event that pitted half the field playing as the Red Team against the other half as the Blue Team. The Blue Team won the event by a score of 34½ to 31½ points. The event included breakfast on Day 1 and lunch on Day 2 in the Eagle’s Nest. Thanks to both the Pro Shop and Eagle’s Nest staffs for hosting and running a very successful event. LALGA By Lydia Fichtman The LALGA is looking for new members. If you are concerned about playing with the league, don’t be. This group is incredibly welcoming and is all about having fun. No one is on the LPGA Tour so there is no need to worry about being a scratch golfer. If you would like to try playing with the 18-hole league there is no obligation to join. Meet the incredible women involved with the league and play two rounds for free. Come out and enjoy the camaraderie and sportsmanship! The summer in Florida is brutally hot! Have fun and see you on the links! Spotlight on Dianne Holman: Dianne grew up all over as her father was a career U.S. Army soldier. She spent most of her youth in Augusta, Georgia and, as her parents had annual passes to the Masters, she went yearly. She has six decades of Masters badges showcased on her lanai. She followed the golfers and “took for granted” her ability to walk the course. Dianne graduated from Butler High School and earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from Georgia Southern University in Health and Physical Education. She taught P.E. & Health and coached for 14 years in junior high school. She added school guidance counselor to her Masters from the University of Georgia & West Georgia University for her remaining 21 years in elementary and high schools. After retirement, Dianne became a Realtor for five years. Dianne has two daughters and eight grandchildren. Twenty-four years ago Dianne met Lee while coaching him on tennis. They obviously “hit it off” and were married. They are affectionately known as Lolli and Pop to the grandkids. Dianne and Lee originally were “birds” and moved onto Dunmore in 2017. In 2018, they decided to build on Pebble Beach and retire full-time to Lake Ashton. Unfortunately, Lee became ill and they stayed in Georgia until 2020 when they returned to their Lake Ashton home and sold their lake house in Georgia. Dianne is very athletic and plays pickleball, tennis and golf. She only started playing golf 15 years ago after retiring from education. She also loves water skiing. Dianne and Lee love to travel and cruise and have two cruises already booked for the future. They are members of the Corvette Club and are also professional barbecue judges for four different barbecue associations. The group usually meets monthly on the first Sunday of the month at 2 pm in the Clubhouse Ballroom but this month will meet July 11 at 2 pm in the Clubhouse Card Room because the first Sunday is July 4. In May, the singles went to the rodeo at River Ranch. In June, the group made plans to cruise the Winter Haven Chain of Lakes. LA ROCS & PEBBLES POTLUCK By Amity Kokochak The next LA ROCS (Riviera, Oakmont, Colonial and Sawgrass) and “Pebbles” (6016-6048 Pebble Beach Blvd.) Social will be held on July 8 at 6 pm in the HFC Community Center. All proceeds from the Craft Fair are earmarked for Habitat for Humanity’s “Tiny Homes for Veterans Project.” More than 40 vendors have already signed up and there will be lots of lotto money! There will be one raffle tree with three chances to win! Each winner will win $100 worth of scratch off lottery tickets! Please come support the veterans and take the opportunity to purchase unique, hand-crafted items including metal art work, crocheted items, not to mention you could be one of the lucky winners of a Lotto Tree and/or other raffle items. LA SWIM CLUB By Sandy White This is an Olympic year and LA Swim Club members are excited to watch the upcoming Tokyo Games in July. Members are also excited about our state Senior Games swim meet in September in Gainesville, FL. Senior Games swimming offers 14 different events and 10 age groups starting at age 50. The events range from 50 yards (two lengths of a 25-yard pool like the HFC), to 500 yards (20 lengths). The shorter races are for those who like to swim fast, while the longer races are for those who like endurance-type activities. All residents are invited to join the LA Swim Club in order to receive e-mails about the benefits of swimming and other swim-related information. All are welcome to participate in one or more of the club's three practices each week (Mondays at 6 pm, Wednesdays at 1:45 pm, and Saturdays at 10 am), even if you are not interested in competing. FYI - practices are fun and relays are incorporated, along with an occasional "Wacky Wednesday” when swimmers wear wacky clothes to the pool and do wacky things in the water. (Shh, don't tell, but all seem to work harder on Wacky Wednesdays!) LASC thanks the HFC staff for the new hooks and shelf, as well as the new aquatic decorations.
