Ward 5 Councillor Barbara Murphy is hosting the annual event in coordination with the Malden Department of Public Works (DPW), one of two projects designed to help beautify the ward and neighborhood. In addition to the Clean Sweep Day, Councillor Murphy is working on a project which is designed to expand the successful Community Garden concept, where residents will be encouraged to participate in converting existing tree pits to micro-gardens in front of their own homes. “We are excited about the Clean Sweep Day and hope everyone in Ward 5 can take part,” Councillor Murphy said. “It’s hard to believe that it’s been 10 years since we have been hosting this event; it seems like it gets more popular each year. Our residents really like to help keep our neighborhood looking its best.” To participate, residents of Ward 5 are asked to do the following either the day before (Friday, May 7) or early in the morning on May 8. • Remove weeds from crevices in sidewalks and surrounding areas and brush them into the street gutters. • Sweep your sidewalk into the street in advance of the scheduled time for your street. • Make sure your vehicle(s) are not parked on the street until after the sweeper has finished on your street. • Become a Street/Neighborhood Captain to make sure all goes smoothly in your area. MVRCS again high atop national rankings n what has become an annual rite of spring, Mystic Valley Regional Charter School (MVRCS) fi nds itself once again in rarifi ed air towards the top of the state and national rankings of the top public schools in America, according to US News & World Report. MVRCS is ranked 367th nationally, putting it within the top 1.5 percent of all U.S. public high schools. The school ranks 11th amongst all Massachusetts public schools. This metric is even more impressive when considering that yet again Massachusetts boasts the most schools within the top 25 percent of the national rankings (nearly 47 percent). The school also finds itself well inside the top 100 of charter schools nationwide, checking in at 84. This marks the fi fth occasion within the last six years that the school ranks as one of the best 100 charter schools in the country. “This is an impressive accomplishment,” said MVRCS Superintendent Alexander Dan. “Throughout our history, we have consistently found ourselves high in the national rankings. It has to be noted that this national recognition does not happen by accident, it is the result of hard work and tireless dedication not only by our high school students but our entire faculty and staff in grades K-12. Our Lower School teachers set a solid and meaningful educational foundation and then our High School team builds on that.” Factors that went into the rankings were as follows: college readiness, college curriculum breadth, math and reading profi ciency, math and reading performance, underserved student performance and graduation rate. Included in the data were more than 24,000 high schools in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Page 6 THE MALDEN ADVOCATE–Friday, April 30, 2021 Malden Today, Tomorrow and Yesterday – Highland Café remembered By Peter F. Levine I t is said in Malden today, tomorrow, and yesterday... You thought Dave Angelo from Public Facilities is just another pretty face, didn’t ya! Dave is fast becoming one of Eric Rubin’s best hires, nipping at the heels of Mike “The Professional” Bartlett as “Top Dog” in the department. An underrated athlete growing up, in another life Dave was the heart and soul of the Highland Café, sharing a lead role at the iconic family restaurant alongside his legendary father, John. Purchasing the Highland in ’79. Come 1990, Dave was top banana, pumping out 500 pies on any given Friday night (I may have had one or two of them)! Also, what a memory this kid has! The possessor of an encyclopedic memory known for recounting where “all the bodies are buried,” as the saying goes. I neglected to include the Highland in my “old man’s bar” article a few weeks back, so Dave reached out and reached into that massive brain full of factoids for the next time we crossed paths. He reminded me that before The Highland was The Highland it was still The Highland, but its nickname was more ominous, it was affectionately called the “Bucket of Blood” for the many bloody altercations that took place there. True stories, mind you! Thank you, Dave! I mentioned Freddy Ribeiro a few weeks back (class of ’74 MHS), and it got me thinking of all the great wrestlers that walked through those doors on Salem Street, always well coached also. Guys like Phil Gormley and John “C.J.” Lopresti – coaches who not only taught the mechanics of wrestling but also instilling in their boys a sense of hard work, persistence and professionalism, and a healthy dose of respect for the sport of wrestling. Students like Freddy, Mike Scibelli, City of Malden Public Facilities Director Eric Rubin and Danny “The Strongman” Ford – most who went through the wrestling program going on to succeed in life as outstanding citizens. C.J. was so good at what he taught that three of his guys went on to be State Champs, 15 State Place winners, 16 Sectional Champs with 29 going on to wrestle at the college level; 29 becoming wrestling coaches themselves. Over 15 years C.J. had 175 wins and 60 losses! That is an amazing feat. Guys like John, Dan & Brian O’Boyle as well as Dan Ford, Dave Russo, Mike Joltki, Dom Sardo, Eddie Wilcox, Chris Carrabino and Jay Smith went on to wrestle in college. Danny Della Gatta, Jeff Carroll, Andy Briatico, Anthony Scibelli, Benny Talbot, Johnny “Eck” Eccleston, Dave O’Brien, “Rapid” Johnny Rafuse, Steve & Mike Rubin and Guy Prescott went on to coaching careers. Sectional Champs included Guy, Dan & Dave Ford, John & Brian O’Boyle, Jimmy Cherry, Eric Rubin, Donny Boyce, Danny Della Gatta, Dave Russo (entertainer), Jimmy “Hacksaw” Reynolds and Carlos Ortiz. Malden’s glory days of wrestling for sure. Speaking of Dave Angelo, anybody else notice that awesome Malden High School baseball cap he has been sporting lately? Sweet! Dorothy “Dotty” Esteves has finally called it quits! The City of Malden Public Facilities Department suffered a devastating blow when this longtime employee retired after working for Malden for over 20 years. The hardworking Dotty was, of course, congratulated by Mayor Christenson with a snazzy diploma celebrating her hard work and dedication and handed two balloons and her very own City of Malden face mask. I kid, of course. I loved this statement from Gary (Doesn’t he always know the best things to say?): “I have always felt that we are only as good as the people around us and Dotty exemplifies that philosophy.” As always Mr. Mayor, spot on, and happy retirement, Dotty! On a side note: I joke that this guy or that guy is the backbone of Public Facilities, but without women like Dorothy, Sheila Wilcox and Dorothy Pereira-Kerger there would be no PF! True facts. Who remembers late night forays to “Buzzy’s Fabulous Roast Beef” at the corner of North Anderson and Cambridge Street in Boston? Perhaps you spent the night partying with Ellis Hall at Jack’s on Mass Avenue in Cambridge? Or you spent the night at Clarke’s in Faneuil Hall making merry along with North Shore Acapella, or maybe you jumped into your first mosh pit with the Real Kids at the Rat in Kenmore Square? Page 10 THE MALDEN ADVOCATE–Friday, April 30, 2021 Malden soars to top of GBL with red-hot, 3-game unbeaten streak Tornados tie Everett, 4-4; Top Somerville (4-2) and Chelsea (6-1) By Steve Freker T he hottest team around right now is the Malden High Golden Tornado boys’ soccer squad. Malden head coach Jeremiah Smith's Tornado boys have rolled to a 3-game unbeaten streak in the past week of play, including wins over some bigtime rivals. Malden started the streak of Saturday, April 24 with a 4-4 tie at home at Macdonald Stadium over next-door rival Everett. Though play was at times chippy, it was also a day when Malden showed it had resolved to come out with a strong finish after a slow start. Malden struck first on the first of three goals by sophomore Iman Chettri, but Everett quickly tied the game at 1-1 and then scored again for a 2-1 lead. Malden rallied back again and knotted it up at 2-2 just before halftime on a rebound goal with just 4 seconds to play before the break by sophomore Joao Ferreira. The Tornados had to play catchup twice more, tying the game twice more after falling behind 3-2 and 4-3. Chettri was once again the man, knocking in a goal with about four minutes left to play to forge the final tie of the game at 4-4. Two meetings have been held previously, one in January MALDEN | FROM PAGE 1 Malden ranked highly in a recent analysis of the most desirable places to live in Eastern Mass. by a daily newspaper. Boston-area home sales and prices skyrocketed even higher in 2020, despite the pandemic, fueled by record-low mortgage rates. Millennials are now the nation’s biggest generation, and millions of them are in or nearing their 30s which are peak home-buying years. The top desired living spots North of Boston were rated in three categories by the average price of single-family homes: Under $500,000: Everett; from $500,000-750,000: Newbury; Over $750,000: Somerville. Malden was rated as the this year and another in March. Both have featured lots of spirited discussion on various aspects of the Master Plan, Councillor Winslow said. Details of the plan include renovating both Tartikoff Park, which is known as “The Skate Park,” on Willow Street and Kierstead Park, also on Willow Street, whose main use at this time is for its youth baseball field. The greenway connecting those two active parks with the passive park at Lincoln Commons is a novel idea, through the vision of Anderson and Winslow. The proposed connection to the Northern Strand Community Trail/bike path across Rt. 60/ Eastern Avenue and behind the runner-up in the $500,000$750,000 category to Newbury, with the average single-family selling price in this community now at $501,500, according to The Warren Group. Like many communities north of Boston, the median price of a single-family home in Malden has soared, up a whopping 51.5 percent since 2015. Everett sale price has rocketed up 61.5 percent since 2015, and Somerville 46.8 percent. Malden's desirability is particularly enhanced by the fact it has two MBTA Orange Line stops, Oak Grove and Malden Center, and the diversity of both its population, demographically-speaking, and its housing options, whether its singleor two-family homes, or apartment living. American slavery and the slave trade were central to the development of the United States and American prosperity in the North and South. As Americans in the 18th and 19th century defined liberty and freedom, enslaved and free Black people were central to abolishing slavery and imagining a freer and more just world. Beacon Hill Roll Call tracks the length of time that the House and Senate were in session each week. Many legislators say that legislative sessions are only one aspect of the Legislature’s job and that a lot of important work is done outside of the House and Senate chambers. They note that their jobs also involve committee work, research, constituent work and other matters that are important to their districts. Critics say that the Legislature does not meet regularly or long enough to debate and vote in public view on the thousands of pieces of legislation that have been filed. They note that the infrequency and brief length of sessions are misguided and lead to irresponsible late-night sessions and a mad rush to act on dozens of bills in the days immediately preceding the end of an annual session. During the week of April 1923, the House met for a total of eleven minutes while the Senate met for a total of eight minutes. Mon. April 19 No House session. No Senate session Tues. Page 18 avy eniiooravvy S iorn or avvyavy y io iori by Jim Miller Should You Prepay Your Funeral? Dear Savvy Senior, My wife and I have been thinking about preplanning our funerals now so our kids won’t have to later, but we would like to fi nd out if it’s a good idea to prepay. What can you tell us? Living on a Budget Dear Living, Planning your funerals in advance is defi nitely a smart move. Not only does it give you and your wife time to make a thoughtful decision on the type of service you want, it also allows you to shop around to fi nd a good funeral provider, and it will spare your family members the burden of making these decisions at an emotional time. But preplanning a funeral doesn’t mean you have to prepay too. In fact, the Funeral Consumer Alliance, a national nonprofi t funeral consumer protection organization, doesn’t recommend it unless you need to spend down your fi nancial resources so you can qualify for Medicaid. Here’s what you should know. Preneed Arrangements Most funeral homes today off er what is known as “preneed plans,” which allow you to prearrange for the type of funeral services you want and prepay with a lump sum or through installments. The funeral home either puts your money in a trust fund with the payout triggered by your death or buys an insurance policy naming itself as the benefi ciary. If you’re interested in this route, make sure you’re being guaranteed the services you specify at the contracted price. Some contracts call for additional payments for fi nal expense funding, which means that if the funeral home’s charges increase between the time you sign up and the time you sign off , somebody will have to pay the diff erence. Here are some additional questions you should ask before committing: • Can you cancel the contract and get a full refund if you change your mind? • Will your money earn interest? If so, how much? Who gets it? • If there is an insurance policy involved, is there a waiting period before it takes eff ect? How long? • Are the prices locked in or will an additional payment be required at the time of death? • Are you protected if the funeral home goes out of business or if it’s bought out by another company? • What happens if you move? Can the plan be transferred to another funeral home in a diff erent state? • If there's money left over after your funeral, will your heirs get it, or does the home keep it? If you decide to prepay, be sure to get all the details of the agreement in writing and give copies to your family so they know what’s expected. If your family isn’t aware that you’ve made plans, your wishes may not be carried out. And if family members don’t know that you’ve prepaid the funeral costs, they could end up paying for the same arrangements. Other Payment Option While prepaying your funerals may seem like a convenient way to go, from a fi nancial point of view, there are better options available. For example, if you have a life insurance policy, many policies will pay a lump sum when you die to your benefi ciaries to be used for your funeral expenses. The payment is made soon after you die and doesn’t have to go through probate. Or you could set up a payable-on-death (or POD) account at your bank or credit union, naming the person you want to handle your arrangements as the benefi ciary. POD accounts also are called Totten Trusts. With this type of account, you maintain control of your money, so you can tap the funds in an emergency, collect the interest and change the benefi ciary. When you die, your benefi ciary collects the balance without the delay of probate. Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior.org. THE MALDEN ADVOCATE–Friday, April 30, 2021 Page 19 Risk of shingles increases with age, but is preventable A Mystic Valley Elder Services consumer’s grandmother was recently diagnosed with shingles. She always thought that was an old-fashioned disease that no one got anymore. But shingles has never disappeared. In fact, each year approximately one million Americans will develop this painful viral infection. Shingles is caused by the same virus that causes chicken pox. The risk for shingles increases with age. Half of all cases of shingles are in people over 60. People with weakened immune systems from illnesses such as cancer, leukemia, lymphoma or HIV are at a higher risk of developing shingles. The good news is shingles can be prevented by getting a vaccination. More than 99 percent of Americans ages 40 and older have had chicken pox, even if they don’t remember getting the disease. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that healthy adults 50 years and older get two doses of the shingles vaccine called Shingrix, separated by two to six months, to prevent shingles and the complications from the disease. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist about getting the vaccine. Once you have chicken pox, the virus can stay dormant in your nerve tissues for years, even decades. In some people, the virus suddenly wakes up, forming blisters or a rash on the chest, back, waistline, upper arms or face. The shingles rash will begin with tingling, pain, numbness or itching. Within a few days, a rash will develop and might spread. Fluid-filled blisters that are very similar to chicken pox blisters will grow out of the rash. The pain from shingles can be mild to intense. Some people will have mostly itching; others will feel pain, even from a gentle touch or breeze. Other symptoms of shingles can include fever, headache, chills and upset stomach. Shingles itself is not contagious; however, the varicella-zoster virus that causes chicken pox and shingles is contagious, and if you have shingles, you can spread the virus to another person, which could then cause them to develop chicken pox. If you’ve never had chicken pox, make sure not to touch open blisters until they scab over, or you’ll develop chicken pox yourself. Shingles can last from two weeks to several weeks. Most people will only have one outbreak in a lifetime; however, multiple outbreaks are possible. THE MALDEN ADVOCATE–Friday, April 30, 2021 MALDEN: TODAY | FROM PAGE 6 the night was Buzzy’s, not only for the “fabulous” roast beef but also for the lively people-watching. It was an incredibly diverse clientele that would walk through those late-night doors, and incredibly entertaining. Before it was Buzzy’s, it was the “Flying A Gas Station” run by boyhood friends (my uncle) Peter “Pacey” Levine and Guy “Goo Goo” Marino. Sometime after the “Flying A” ran its course, my Uncle Pacey packed up the brood and settled in a foreign land, an unusual place down south called “Georgia” – his sweet daughter Suzy settling on the North Shore of Boston many years later while her sister Liza took on New York (name drop alert), marrying a man named Ed Zuckerman. Ed happens to be the former co-executive producer and writer for the smash hit TV show Law & Order. My brother Joe and I took a walk by the old Buzzy’s spot recently and were pleasantly surprised to fi nd a peaceful, garden-type space with trees and fl owers, the mid-19th-century-granitestyle Charles Street Jail (aka The Liberty Hotel) still looming ominously in the background. “This is the end, beautiful friend, this is the end, my only friend, the end” – extra special shout-out to Lester Morovitz from Malden Taxi for no other reason than he is such a great, benevolent gentleman. Forever helping one cause or another in Malden, and elsewhere – the man has a huge heart, a deep compassion for his fellow man and a genuine concern for others. I know it has been said by many in the past (forgive me for stating the obvious), but no single person in Malden exemplifi es community spirit more than Morovitz. And yes indeed, Malden is a far better place to live because of this cherished soul. Thank you, Lester, from the bottom of our hearts. Postscript: I would certainly be remiss if I did not mention the boss of all bosses at the Highland, the late (2008), great John Puleo. John lived a rich, full life surrounded by many friends and a (very) large, extended family. Anybody who knows the Angelos, the Puleos, the Cagnos or the Gennettis (Who’d I forget?) knows that my “large, extended family” comment is no exaggeration. World War II Navy veteran, decorated Malden Police Detective, man of great patience and the gentleman who greeted you warmly at the door to the Highland or kept you in line while throwing you out the same door at the Highland. John, like most who grew up in Edgeworth, was attached at the hip with the patron saint of the neighborhood, Saint Rocco. He marched, he fundraised and he was loyal to the end to the late, great Saint Peter’s Parish. No, I did not forget his lifelong paramour! After returning home from the service in 1946, he married the love of his life, Anna Gennetti. Inseparable in life, a certainty in an uncertain world, it was the sight of John and Anna sitting late night at the Highland enjoying a meal, their own company and the many patrons (pests?) who would stop by and say hello that endeared the couple to generations of Maldonians. Loved this quote from his family: “Dad taught his children and grandchildren that a rich life was one fi lled with faith in God, love of family, and the love of a special woman. Dad was very rich.” To John and his family: “As long as we live, they too will live; for they are now a part of us; as we remember them.” —Jewish Prayer.
