Page 2 THE MALDEN ADVOCATE–Friday, April 30, 2021 10th Annual Ward 5 ‘Clean Sweep Day’ hosted by Councillor Murphy, DPW is coming May 8 Councillor also planning Community Garden expansion, conversion of tree pits to micro-gardens By Steve Freker I t will be spring cleaning for the residents of Ward 5 on Saturday, May 8 when “Clean Sweep Day” arrives. Ward 5 Councillor Barbara Murphy is hosting the annual event in coordination with the Malden Department of Public Works (DPW), one of two projects designed to help beautify the ward and neighborhood. In addition to the Clean Sweep Day, Councillor Murphy is working on a project which is designed to expand the successful Community Garden concept, where residents will be encouraged to participate in converting existing tree pits to micro-gardens in front of their own homes. “We are excited about the Clean Sweep Day and hope everyone in Ward 5 can take part,” Councillor Murphy said. “It’s hard to believe that it’s been 10 years since we have been hosting this event; it seems like it gets more popular each year. Our residents really like to help keep our neighborhood looking its best.” To participate, residents of Ward 5 are asked to do the following either the day before (Friday, May 7) or early in the morning on May 8. • Remove weeds from crevices in sidewalks and surrounding areas and brush them into the street gutters. • Sweep your sidewalk into the street in advance of the scheduled time for your street. • Make sure your vehicle(s) are not parked on the street until after the sweeper has finished on your street. • Become a Street/Neighborhood Captain to make sure all goes smoothly in your area. Ward 5 Councillor Murphy wants you to join her in taking the beauty of the Community Garden and spreading it throughout the ward. “Let’s brighten all of Ward 5 by developing unused tree pits into micro-gardens,” she said. Councillor Murphy shared some Ideas for bringing more nature opportunities to the city: • Attract pollinators with coneflowers, lupine, zinnia or lavender. • Rock and roll by mixing different size stones with hens and chicks, phlox or moss. • Experiment in and outside the kitchen with basil, mint, oregano and parsley. • Support the natural ecosystem with natives like our state plant, Mayflower. • Ignite your imagination by building a fairy house. • Make a Tend-a-Tree commitment to the tree you already have by keeping the tree pit free of weeds during the growing season. “I have placed an order for new trees as well. If you prefer a tree to a micro-garden contact me and we will evaluate the location for appropriateness,” Councillor Murphy said. “No matter how you choose to participate, either with creating a micro garden, making a Tend-a-Tree commitment or electing for a brand-new tree, please sign up by scanning the QR Code on the flyers that were distributed to individual homes, or sending me an email at bmurphy@cityofmalden.org. When you do, I will drop off a personalized sign with your name as a thank you,” Councillor Murphy said. Prices subject to change Spring is around the Corner! FLEET
