In describing the focused Molis emphasized that this training was part of a regularly scheduled block of instruction and was not held in reaction to events that have taken place elsewhere. “This important training was something that was put together by Captain John Amirault, who is assigned to the position of Training Captain,” said Molis. “Captain Amirault put together a course of instruction that was effective, practical, innovative and realistic.” For the CPR Training, Chief Molis said that the department is fortunate to have great partners in public safety, such as Cataldo Ambulance, providing top quality instructors in the use of lifesaving CPR. “Malden Police officers come to work not only to protect and to serve, but also to save. This training gives them the knowledge and ability to provide lifesaving measures whenever the need arises when seconds Conducted Energy Weapon training, Chief Molis stated, “For this training the department was able to use our own highly qualified resources to provide a course of instruction that places the highest priority on the safety of the resisting and noncompliant subject, the public and the officers. Lt. Richard Correale oversaw the training and he was assisted by members of the department who have received instructor training. There is great emphasis placed on de-escalation and the use of crisis intervention techniques. The use of role playing was effectively used to provide realistic scenarios in which lifesaving decision-making is emphasized.” The training took place over the course of several days, and three city officials were invited to attend, observe and ask questions. Those in attendance for the training on April 15 were Mayor Gary Christenson, City Council President Neal Anderson and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Coordinator Bybiose Larochelle. Chief Molis noted the respect given to the department and the community, stating, “The Malden Police Department for good reason has received a great outpouring of gratitude and support from the community. This free service is designed to resolve eviction or other housing-related conflicts in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Free mediation services are also available for separating parents to address issues about co-parenting time and other child-related conflicts through the Center’s Parent Mediation Program. Services are available to any interested and eligible individuals thanks to funding from the Massachusetts Office of Public Collaboration. Interested individuals and organizations should call CDSC at 617-876-5376 or visit www. communitydispute.org to access services, make an appointment or book a consult. Settling a dispute of any kind can often drain the emotions and bank accounts of those involved, and navigating a global pandemic only adds to those concerns. For over 40 years, CDSC has eased the stress and expense of resolving a variety of conflicts using skilled teams of volunteer mediators, providing affordable mediation and conflict management training programs and engaging the community through outreach and education. CDSC assists in mediating conflicts, including divorce, separation and marital mediation, eldercare, issues related to the LGBTQ community, housing and consumer disputes, neighbors and workplace conflicts. “Conflict is a challenging and often difficult everyday constant as part of the human condition in our society,” said CDSC Executive Director Gail Packer. “Conflict hurts.
