Page 10 THE MALDEN ADVOCATE–Friday, April 30, 2021 Malden soars to top of GBL with red-hot, 3-game unbeaten streak Tornados tie Everett, 4-4; Top Somerville (4-2) and Chelsea (6-1) By Steve Freker T he hottest team around right now is the Malden High Golden Tornado boys’ soccer squad. Malden head coach Jeremiah Smith's Tornado boys have rolled to a 3-game unbeaten streak in the past week of play, including wins over some bigtime rivals. Malden started the streak of Saturday, April 24 with a 4-4 tie at home at Macdonald Stadium over next-door rival Everett. Though play was at times chippy, it was also a day when Malden showed it had resolved to come out with a strong finish after a slow start. Malden struck first on the first of three goals by sophomore Iman Chettri, but Everett quickly tied the game at 1-1 and then scored again for a 2-1 lead. Malden rallied back again and knotted it up at 2-2 just before halftime on a rebound goal with just 4 seconds to play before the break by sophomore Joao Ferreira. The Tornados had to play catchup twice more, tying the game twice more after falling behind 3-2 and 4-3. Chettri was once again the man, knocking in a goal with about four minutes left to play to forge the final tie of the game at 4-4. "It was a solid team effort." Malden took the lead early and never relinquished it, as most of the play was in the middle of the field. After Somerville tied the game early in the second half, Malden went ahead 3-2 on a Chettri goal and then made it a bigger lead at 4-2, the eventual final. Malden took on a solid Chelsea team, which had beaten several other top GBL teams, and claimed a 6-1 victory in what ended up being a league showdown game. "We continued to play as a team and were solid on all of the aspects of our game. We had to be against a top team like Chelsea," Coach Smith said. **** Malden was back in action against Lynn Classical, also on the road, after press time.           Everett players and coaches talk it over in the 4-4 tie on the road at Malden.
