THE MALDEN ADVOCATE–Friday, April 30, 2021 MALDEN: TODAY | FROM PAGE 6 the night was Buzzy’s, not only for the “fabulous” roast beef but also for the lively people-watching. It was an incredibly diverse clientele that would walk through those late-night doors, and incredibly entertaining. Before it was Buzzy’s, it was the “Flying A Gas Station” run by boyhood friends (my uncle) Peter “Pacey” Levine and Guy “Goo Goo” Marino. Sometime after the “Flying A” ran its course, my Uncle Pacey packed up the brood and settled in a foreign land, an unusual place down south called “Georgia” – his sweet daughter Suzy settling on the North Shore of Boston many years later while her sister Liza took on New York (name drop alert), marrying a man named Ed Zuckerman. Ed happens to be the former co-executive producer and writer for the smash hit TV show Law & Order. My brother Joe and I took a walk by the old Buzzy’s spot recently and were pleasantly surprised to fi nd a peaceful, garden-type space with trees and fl owers, the mid-19th-century-granitestyle Charles Street Jail (aka The Liberty Hotel) still looming ominously in the background. “This is the end, beautiful friend, this is the end, my only friend, the end” – extra special shout-out to Lester Morovitz from Malden Taxi for no other reason than he is such a great, benevolent gentleman. Forever helping one cause or another in Malden, and elsewhere – the man has a huge heart, a deep compassion for his fellow man and a genuine concern for others. I know it has been said by many in the past (forgive me for stating the obvious), but no single person in Malden exemplifi es community spirit more than Morovitz. And yes indeed, Malden is a far better place to live because of this cherished soul. Thank you, Lester, from the bottom of our hearts. Postscript: I would certainly be remiss if I did not mention the boss of all bosses at the Highland, the late (2008), great John Puleo. John lived a rich, full life surrounded by many friends and a (very) large, extended family. Anybody who knows the Angelos, the Puleos, the Cagnos or the Gennettis (Who’d I forget?) knows that my “large, extended family” comment is no exaggeration. World War II Navy veteran, decorated Malden Police Detective, man of great patience and the gentleman who greeted you warmly at the door to the Highland or kept you in line while throwing you out the same door at the Highland. John, like most who grew up in Edgeworth, was attached at the hip with the patron saint of the neighborhood, Saint Rocco. He marched, he fundraised and he was loyal to the end to the late, great Saint Peter’s Parish. No, I did not forget his lifelong paramour! After returning home from the service in 1946, he married the love of his life, Anna Gennetti. Inseparable in life, a certainty in an uncertain world, it was the sight of John and Anna sitting late night at the Highland enjoying a meal, their own company and the many patrons (pests?) who would stop by and say hello that endeared the couple to generations of Maldonians. Loved this quote from his family: “Dad taught his children and grandchildren that a rich life was one fi lled with faith in God, love of family, and the love of a special woman. Dad was very rich.” To John and his family: “As long as we live, they too will live; for they are now a part of us; as we remember them.” —Jewish Prayer.
