Voorhies, Randel join the exclusive albatross club The rarest shot in golf is the double eagle, which is also called an albatross. In the span of 11 days in January, two local players recorded this rare feat by only needing two shots to complete a par-5 hole. On Jan. 5, Louis Voorhies holed a 4-iron shot from 171 yards out to record a double eagle on the par-5 seventh at BREC’s Santa Maria Golf Course in Baton Rouge, La.The shot was witnessed by Ronnie LaBorde, Kevin Roussel, Mike Vermaelan and Steve Pierotti. Christopher Randel joined the albatross club when his second shot on the par-5 first hole at Southern Trace Country Club (Shreveport, La.) found the hole from 265 yards out with a 3-wood. Randel, who had never even recorded an eagle before his Jan. 16 round at his home course, started the hole with a 254-yard drive that landed in the fairway just left of a fairway bunker. Randel, the four players he was playing with or the two friends following his round never saw the ball go in the hole, which was behind a bunker. While looking for his shot, one of his playing partners — Joseph Fell — found the ball in the cup. Other witnesses were Jordan Abdehou, Zach Kelly, Jayce Simpson,Will Raymond and Jeff Lyons. Randel, who has been playing golf for almost seven years, finished with a 41 on the front nine and an 86 for his round. He is a 14.1 handicap and resides in Shreveport. COVID-19 and its affects on tournaments By Beth Bares It's been an interesting 10 months, to say the least.Who would have thought that in our lifetime a virus would shut down the entire world in an instant? COVID-19 has affected each one of us in different, unprecedented ways. But, as dark as these times may seem, there is a positive and a negative side to this. Golf has become the escape for many of us, a sanctuary from the fear and uncertainty in our lives. Clubs have been dusted off, new ones purchased, swings analyzed, and tee times booked by the thousands. Golf courses quickly became a safe place for men and women to step away from the uncertainty of their daily lives, even if it's just for a few hours. According to Golfweek, nationwide in September there has been a 25.5% increase in rounds played! That's the positive, but the negative is how it has affected the non-profit community. We all know that this area hosts a tournament every Monday or Friday in the spring and the fall at almost every golf course. As president of the First Tee of Greater New Orleans I see first-hand exactly how not being able to host a tournament affects your organization's bottom line. While it has forced us to think outside the box we know that nothing replaces the benefits of our golf tournaments. You see, the tournament isn't just about raising money…it's an opportunity to tell your story and market yourself to a captured audience. If you do it correctly that tournament comes back to you tenfold with new sponsors and support in other areas that were missing before. On the golf course side of it, each person that comes to a tournament is a potential member or pass holder making it a win-win for everyone. There are lots of tournaments in the area. Those tournaments generally go after the same people when asking for money and these people are on a donation hold for events, but we are seeing now that there is a whole new group of potential sponsors out there that are reintroducing themselves to the game. Because of this resurgence in golf, we have a new audience to introduce to our tournaments and hopefully help them understand the importance of their presence at these events. After 30 years in the golf business I haven't seen golf this popular since Tiger Woods started breaking records. But I also haven't seen this city go from a full spring and fall golf tournament schedule to a hint of small golf outings here and there. We have to start dipping our toe in the water and get creative on how to run a safe golf tournament. I've seen it happen and know firsthand it can be done. On March 13, 2020, I hosted a tournament at Pelican Point. At the time, I had no idea that this would be my last tournament of the year. My company,Your Golf Event, has coordinated tournaments for non-profits, corporations and conventions in the Greater New Orleans area and in the United States. So, when people say, "you must be so busy — golf courses are slammed", I have to laugh because unfortunately I don't own the golf course, nor do I work at the golf course and I'm not getting paid for the average guy to go play golf. Yes, most golf courses are doing great but that shouldn't be confused with the enormous financial effect this pandemic has had on tournaments as a whole. Whether it's a non-profit that relies on the revenue generated by the tournament or a corporation that hosts their tournament to thank their clients, there has been a definite negative effect. After speaking with several golf CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE TEE TO GREEN GOLF MAGAZINE FEBRUARY 2021 ONLINE ISSUE  PAGE 4

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 4 courses in the area they all say they have exceeded their golf rounds from the previous year by several thousand rounds, except for Audubon Park Golf Course, which was closed for several months during the pandemic and still has not returned to full staff. But after talking to the non-profits it's quite a different story. They aren't able to boast about the benefits of golf and it's not just the financial toll but it's their story they haven't been able to tell and the benefits of being able to market themselves to their players. My hope is that when you read this article you think of how many times you've played golf since this started and remember how many times you played in a golf tournament with a group of friends. It's quite a different experience to go play a round and enjoy the moment but when you're playing in a charity tournament that one round means so much more. You are getting a fun day of golf with food, beverage, a nice gift, awards and most importantly helping an organization that touches our community.Who's your favorite charity? Have you checked on them lately? They need you now more than ever. It is unclear what the future of tournaments will look like this year. Even the Zurich Classic of New Orleans doesn't know to what extent or even if fans will be allowed, but to me they are the beacon of hope that golf tournaments will return. They continue to be the golf and charitable leaders in our community. The charities they help in the community with the millions of dollars they donate is immeasurable. I was fortunate enough to learn everything I know about running a golf tournament by being the Tournament Coordinator and Director of Events for the Fore!Kids Foundation for more than 10 years. Many people don't know that Fore!Kids Foundation is the non-profit organization that has dedicated itself to hosting the Zurich Classic since 1938.The only other time there was no tournament other than last year was during WWII. They are seasoned professionals who have a love for the game, the city and the charities they help. It is the lessons I learned during that time and the 20 years after that have helped me assist over 1,900 tournaments, raise millions of dollars for charity and create a trusted business in the Greater New Orleans area. I truly believe a golf tournament can be different for any organization and it should have its own identity. In 2004, I saw a need for helping non-profits create tournaments that offered more of an experience for the player while meeting or exceeding their budget goal. Golf courses also benefit from my services because the tournaments I bring them are organized so they can staff appropriately for the day. Don't get me wrong — running a golf tournament is NOT easy. It requires organization, hard work, a good committee and an understanding of the dynamics of how to get the most out of your event. This is what I have learned in my 30 years. I enjoy sharing that knowledge so non-profits can TEE TO GREEN GOLF MAGAZINE FEBRUARY 2021 ONLINE ISSUE  PAGE 5 reach their goals and CEOs can be proud of the event they have invited their most important clients to attend. As they say, "this too shall pass!" I don't know about you but I'm ready for this to pass quickly and look forward to a brighter and more creative golf tournament future! If you are interested in hosting a tournament and would like a free consultation please go to www.yourgolfevent.net or contact me at baresgolf@gmail.com or 504.513.4766. Please know I am located in the Greater New Orleans area, but have worked in other areas of the state and other parts of the country. No job is too big or too small!
