Fall is in full swing at Lake Ashton, with pumpkins, bright autumn colors and seasonal decorations filling the Clubhouse. Our activity calendars are also packed with opportunities to connect, learn, stay active and have fun. Staff continues to work hard to offer a robust selection of classes, activities and events while keeping our many amenities operating smoothly and looking their best. We appreciate the residents and volunteers who help make Lake Ashton such a special place to call home. In recent months, Lake Ashton has experienced a significant staffing transition, with six employees leaving our small team. We understand that changes like these can be challenging for both residents and the employees who remain. Our management company, GMS, is actively recruiting and hiring qualified team members as we rebuild our staff. In the meantime, our current employees continue to step up, support one another and do their best to keep things moving. Their dedication during this transition deserves our appreciation and support. Lake Ashton is a resilient community, and we will get through this transition together. As new employees join our team, please take a moment to welcome them, introduce yourself and offer them the kindness and friendliness that make Lake Ashton such a wonderful place to live. We also ask residents to be patient and kind with our staff. Everyone is working hard to serve the community, whether assisting with an event, promoting a group activity, answering a question or providing help when needed. A little grace can go a long way during this period of transition. October also brings Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Lake Ashton is joining communities across the country in recognizing the importance of awareness, support and early detection. Residents will have opportunities throughout the community to participate in Breast Cancer Awareness activities and show their support. Check the Clubhouse and HFC activity calendars and the information throughout this issue for details. Whether you attend an event, wear pink, support a friend or loved one, or take time to learn more, these activities reflect the strength and compassion found throughout Lake Ashton. As more summer travelers return home, traffic throughout Lake Ashton will increase. Please take your time and remain alert when driving, walking or biking in the community. When walking or biking during times of limited visibility, wear reflective clothing or other high-visibility gear. If you are walking along a roadway without a sidewalk, face traffic and remain aware of your surroundings. Although fall has arrived, hurricane and storm season continues through November 30. Residents should remain prepared for severe weather and review their personal emergency plans. Pay attention to the lightning monitors located throughout the community and seek appropriate shelter when severe weather approaches. As we welcome everyone back to Lake Ashton and enjoy the season, let’s continue looking out for one another. Please be patient with our staff, welcome new team members and participate in the many activities that bring our community together. The strength of Lake Ashton has always been its people. 5

The Health & Fitness Center continues its tradition of bringing awareness to breast cancer throughout the month of October. To begin with, we encourage LA residents who attend exercise classes in the month of October to wear pink clothing to all exercise classes for a chance to win a prize. The HFC is also sponsoring its 10th Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk, taking place on October 2, beginning at 9 am, with a short walk route and a longer walking route. The HFC will award medals to the first three finishers in each category. There is also a breakfast brunch following the walk for participants. Residents can register in person or by phone at 863-595-1562. The HFC is also continuing its commemoration of those people affected by breast cancer by displaying their names on our “Wall of Honor” behind the HFC’s activity desk throughout the month. Simply let HFC personnel know the name(s) of those people they would like to honor. This includes our Pinktober-Fest Dance, which features LA’s house band, Perfect Pitch, performing your favorite 80s and 90s hits on Friday, October 2, from 6-9 pm. This is a free event; however, we encourage donations for the Breast Cancer Foundation of Central Florida. You may drop off checks only at the HFC during the month of October and during these special activities. The HFC’s Halloween “Freaky Friday” dance will take place on October 23, from 6-9 pm, with music by Perfect Pitch. Costumes are optional, but we all know what fun it is to guess who is behind that mask, and there will be prizes awarded for the three best costumes worn. Bacon Wake Food Truck will be on hand serving breakfast as well as plenty of burgers and other goodies. Please mark your calendar for the Lake Ashton II Community Development District (LA 2 CDD) meeting on Thursday, October 15, at 9 am in the Community Center. This meeting is a valuable opportunity to stay informed about district matters, participate in discussions and connect with fellow residents. Your involvement helps support the continued growth and well-being of the Lake Ashton community. If you are unable to attend in person, you may wish to attend via Zoom. The HFC encourages residents to watch for upcoming events as it continues to promote awareness and community spirit. From joining a group walk to enjoying a live performance or spending time together through games, there are many ways to get involved and show your support. 10

RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT By Marianne Zak October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Here are four Lake Ashton women’s stories of courage and fortitude as they faced this tremendous challenge, along with their stories of triumph over breast cancer. Seven years ago, Lydia Fichtman was asked to co-chair the Lake Ashton Pink Ribbon Breast Cancer Golf Tournament. Two weeks later, she was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer following her annual mammogram. The coincidence was not lost on her. She believes strongly that “Every woman should have a mammogram yearly, no questions.” Lydia has been cancer-free since the fall of 2020. At Watson Clinic, she endured chemotherapy, immunotherapy, seven weeks of radiation and three surgeries, all during the COVID quarantine. Due to COVID, her devoted husband, Paul, sat in their car waiting while his bride received her treatments. Lydia has been married to her high school sweetheart, Paul, for 50 years. They recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary by cruising to Alaska with their four children and their families. A highlight of their cruise was when the captain officiated as they renewed their wedding vows in front of their 11 grandchildren. Lydia laughingly told her family, “We are spending your inheritance with you.” Lydia and Paul moved to Lake Ashton in 2018 and reside on Riviera Court. Besides golf and co-chairing the annual breast cancer golf tournament, they cruise somewhere each year. Other destinations have included Africa, French Polynesia, Tahiti, Antarctica, Greenland, Iceland, Norway and the Danube River. They look forward to visiting Japan, Australia and New Zealand in the future. Breast cancer has adjusted their outlook. She said, “There are no shops in Heaven.” 12 Dawn Neigh of Hogan Lane has been married to Ken for 51 years, and together they have raised two daughters. The Neighs moved to Lake Ashton in February 2015 from Michigan. In 2023, she had her annual mammogram and was diagnosed with HER2-positive stage 1 breast cancer. She went to Watson Clinic, where she endured 34 radiation treatments and chemotherapy every three weeks for one year. Ken was with her at every chemotherapy treatment and said, “That’s what I signed up for.” She had surgery to check her lymph nodes and, finding no cancer, she rang the bell in December 2024. Dawn was grateful for the many people in Lake Ashton who, upon hearing of her diagnosis, reached out to her and were “so good to me.” Dawn and Ken celebrated her victory by hosting a party in January 2025 for more than 80 Lake Ashton residents who had “touched me in some way.” She said, “Just little things; they didn’t realize what they did. It was a hug, walking with me, sending a card or a phone call.” The Eagle’s Nest was decorated in pink, with pink boxing gloves as centerpieces. Dawn, an avid golfer, has sponsored a hole for the annual breast cancer tournament every year since she beat cancer. Carole Ferrieri of Birkdale Drive has lived in Lake Ashton for 22 years. She and her husband, Bill, grew up across the street from one another in Greenwich Village, New York. In May, they will celebrate 64 years of marriage. They have three daughters and five grandchildren. In 1992, they moved to Boynton Beach, Florida, before discovering Lake Ashton.Five years ago, Carole’s December mammogram revealed three spots on her breast. She chose to receive her care at AdventHealth in Haines City and was assured that the cancer had been caught in time. She had a mastectomy but did not need chemotherapy, radiation or lymph nodes removed. Carole did not need therapy and was able to quickly resume her active lifestyle. Her insurance allows her three bras a year and a prosthesis every two years, including one for a bathing suit.
Carole said, “I told my daughters to make sure they go for a mammogram every year.” Carole, is an avid golfer, and plays cards weekly, especially poker and Hand and Foot. Her family is her greatest joy, and she always looks forward to traveling to visit them. Tami Donnelly, who is 16 years breast cancer-free, lives on Sawgrass Drive and has lived in Lake Ashton for 2 1/2 years with her husband of 30 years, Dana. They share three children. The Donnellys moved from Houston, Texas, to be close to elderly parents in Lake Wales. Tami had a mammogram 17 years ago, and although something was suspicious, she was told to come back in six months. She was her own best advocate and sought a second opinion with a biopsy. Ironically, the lump that was biopsied was benign, but the rest of her breast was 99% cancerous in the milk ducts. Tami chose a double mastectomy so she would not have to worry as much in the future. She was told that a machine would not have discovered this cancer for another seven years. She said, “All by the Grace of God, I went to a breast doctor.” She decided on expanders and silicone implants. Although she suffered through surgery and reconstruction, she said, “Some days I feel guilty because so many women that had breast cancer had to go through so much more than I did. Many women become sick, lose their hair, their livelihood, and even their marriage. I only had to give up two boobs; others go through much more.” She still checks herself every month. During Tami’s first golf game after her reconstruction, she got a holein-one. The Atlanta Journal and Constitution wrote about the achievement with the headline, “There Is Life After Cancer.” This September, at the World Amateur Golf Tournament in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Tami came in second place in her flight of 49 golfers. She has played there for 11 years. Besides golf, Tami enjoys cards, wine with her girlfriends, road trips, casinos and annual trips to Las Vegas. 13 This month is the Lake Ashton Pink Ribbon Breast Cancer Golf Tournament benefiting the Breast Cancer Foundation of Central Florida. Last year, more than $65,000 was raised through the Lake Ashton Pink Ribbon fundraiser. Women who need financial assistance while undergoing treatment may receive help with their mortgage, Uber rides to the hospital, utilities, daycare and other expenses. One in every eight women is diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. The journeys these four Lake Ashton women generously shared for Breast Cancer Awareness Month are yet another reason why Lake Ashton is “Simply the Best.” Please see more information about the act ivit ies at t he Clubhouse and HFC in October to promote Breast Cancer Awareness on page 28, and the Pink Ribbon Golf Tournament coming up on November 14 on page 44. L.A. LOOKS Wildlife Corner Photo & Article By Barbara Ann Comer The Red-bellied Woodpecker is the most common woodpecker seen at Lake Ashton. Many mistakenly call it a Red-headed Woodpecker because the male has quite a bit of red on the head. However, it lacks the totally red head of the other. These year-round residents have a heavily barred black-and-white back. The red on the belly is negligible rendering the name rather meaningless. Woodpeckers have very long tongues that are about twice the length of their bill to reach inside the holes they drill for insects. When not using the tongue, it's curled around the back of the head between the skull and the skin! The holes excavated are frequently used by other birds. They drum on trees and other objects to proclaim territory and attract mates. The Red-bellied Woodpecker's rolling calls are a familiar sound. If you take time to learn the call you will notice them everywhere! LA (LW) HOA CORNER By Charles Roland A sincere “Thank-you” from the HOA Board to all that participate and give their feedback to help our community stay beautiful, friendly and compliant. There are several activities within the Board that are underway to clarify the roles and responsibilities of our Board, Committees and sub-committees that will add continuity for our future members. As mentioned in the last issue of the LA Times, our two new committees (Welcome and Wellness) are well under way and already providing services to our members. If you happen to notice a neighbor in need, please make sure that you reach out to Kathie McGlaughlin (secretary@lakeashtonhoa.org) for her 14 team. As we solidify a few more processes, we are going to be forming a “Communications” committee to assist in getting accurate messages out to Homeowners in a legal and timely manner. If you would like to be a part of any of these three committees make your wishes known. Thank you to those of you that have joined a committee and those that let us know that you are ready and willing to assist our community. The New Guidelines will be posted on the HOA website (https://stambaugh.cincwebaxis.com/ account/loginmodernthemes) soon as possible. New homeowners will receive a copy with their new homeowners’ packet at the clubhouse. Any change to the exterior of your home will, more than likely, require an ARC request to be submitted (User Login - ARC Tracker for Lake Ashton HOA). Additionally, make sure you check your email as there may be additional questions regarding your request. A reminder that there is a suggestion box next to the bulletin board near the bowling alley for those that like to write. To receive email notifications from the LA HOA, residents must submit a completed email authorization form to the management company, Stambaugh, at 863-324-5100. PET PLAY PARK REMINDERS • Please remember to pick up after your dog and dispose of the bags in the receptacles provided. • Put down all umbrellas prior to leaving the Pet Play Park. The umbrellas could be damaged during windy days. • The bags located in the dispensers at the Pet Play Parks and by the Clubhouse Tennis Courts are for use while at the Park or walking around the amenities only. Under no circumstance should users take large quantities of the bags for use outside of these areas. • To keep the grass in good shape users are encouraged to stop dogs from digging and fill any holes with the sand provided to ensure the grass stays in good shape for years to come. Contact the Clubhouse Activities Desk at 863-324-6032 with any questions.
Back Pain That Hasn't Improved — Even After Injections, Therapy, or Surgery A non-surgical option for damaged spinal discs, offered by a retired Navy surgeon. Consultations by web meeting — no travel. Gerald Mastaw, MD Retired Lieutenant Commander, United States Navy Wartime Surgeon | Lead Discseel® Provider and Trainer “I served as a wartime surgeon before I practiced here in Florida. I know what years of physical demand do to a spine, and I know how frustrating it is to be told that major surgery is the only option left. It isn’t always.” WHAT THE DISCSEEL® PROCEDURE IS The Discseel® Procedure is a minimally invasive, outpatient treatment for damaged spinal discs. It uses fibrin — a biologic — injected into tears in the disc wall. There is no cutting, no fusion hardware, and no laser. The procedure takes approximately 40 minutes and is performed with X-ray guidance under mild sedation. It begins with an annulogram™, an imaging step that identifies tears standard MRI can miss. CONDITIONS IT MAY BE CONSIDERED FOR • Degenerative disc disease • Annular tears • Bulging or herniated discs • Sciatica and radiating leg pain • Chronic low back or neck pain • Pain persisting after prior spine surgery, fusion, or laminectomy Not every patient is a candidate. A consultation and imaging review determine whether the procedure is appropriate for your condition. FOR VETERANS Covered through VA Community Care. The Discseel® Procedure is covered for eligible veterans through the VA Community Care Network, administered by Optum. We walk you through the referral process with the VA from start to finish. You don’t need to know the terminology or navigate it alone — call us first and our team will handle it with you, step by step. Your consultation is by web meeting. NOT A VETERAN? Discseel® is not covered by Medicare or most commercial insurance. We’ll review your imaging, tell you honestly whether you’re a candidate, and give you clear pricing before you commit to anything. SAFETY NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH (NW) CORNER By Fay Wood, NW Chief It’s hard to believe, but the holiday season is quickly approaching. With increased shopping, deliveries and travel, the National Crime Prevention Council offers these tips to help keep you, your home and your belongings safe throughout the holidays. At Home • Make sure doors and windows are secured with deadbolts, secondary locks or other appropriate devices, and use them. • Never hide spare keys in mailboxes, planters or under doormats. • Keep entrances and dark areas well-lit with outdoor lighting or motion sensors. • Keep trees and shrubs trimmed so they do not conceal doors and windows. • Keep gifts and other valuables out of sight from windows and doors. • Lock your vehicle and remove valuables, even when it is parked in your driveway. • Mail cards, checks and gift certificates from the Post Office or a USPS collection box. Protect Your Packages Package theft is a growing concern during the holidays. Consider having packages delivered to a secure location, such as your workplace or a package locker, or require a signature for delivery. Track shipments and sign up for delivery notifications so you know when a package arrives. If you will be traveling, arrange for packages to be held or ask a trusted neighbor to collect them. If a package shows as delivered but is missing, first confirm the delivery with the carrier. Check with neighbors and review security camera footage. If you see a theft in progress, note the person's description, vehicle and license plate number, if possible, and contact law enforcement. Do not put yourself in danger by confronting a suspected thief. 20 Be Alert to Scams • Use caution when unexpected visitors come to your door, including salespeople and delivery personnel. Ask for identification when appropriate, and be especially cautious of requests for donations. • Before giving to a charity, research the organization and find out how donations will be used. If You’re Traveling • Ask a trusted friend or neighbor to keep an eye on your home. • Use timers for lights or radios, and make arrangements for mail and newspaper delivery while you are away. After the Holidays • Break down large boxes and place them inside garbage bags rather than advertising expensive new purchases at the curb. • Add new valuables to your home inventory, including photographs, make, model and serial numbers. Consider engraving valuable items to make them easier to identify if they are stolen. • For stolen packages, contact the appropriate delivery company (ex. USPS, UPS, Amazon, etc.) and, when necessary, the Lake Wales or Winter Haven Police Department. Your Lake Ashton Neighborhood Watch Team wishes you a healthy and prosperous holiday season. Remember: If you see something, report it! LAKE ASHTON CERT By Ernie Harben Want to learn valuable emergency skills while helping your neighbors? DENGUE FEVER CONF IRMED IN POLK COUNTY The Florida Department of Health in Polk County has confirmed a locally acquired case of dengue fever, prompting increased mosquito surveillance and prevention efforts by the Department of Health and Polk County Mosquito Control. Residents should take precautions to avoid mosquito bites and know the symptoms to watch for. Protect Yourself From Mosquito Bites Dengue is spread primarily through the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito. These mosquitoes can bite during both the day and night. The best protection is to prevent mosquito bites: • Use an EPA-registered insect repellent as directed. • Wear loose-fitting, long-sleeved shirts and long pants when spending time outdoors. • Keep doors and windows closed or use screens to keep mosquitoes outside. • Remove standing water around your home, including water in flowerpots, buckets, birdbaths and other containers where mosquitoes can breed. Know the Symptoms About one in four people infected with dengue develop symptoms. The most common symptom is a fever, often accompanied by headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle, joint or bone pain, nausea, vomiting or a rash. Symptoms typically last two to seven days. If you develop a fever or other symptoms consistent with dengue, particularly after mosquito exposure, contact your healthcare provider. A blood test is the only way to confirm a dengue infection. Know the Warning Signs Severe dengue can become life-threatening within hours. Seek immediate medical attention if symptoms include severe abdominal pain or tenderness, repeated vomiting, bleeding from the nose or gums, vomiting blood, blood in the stool, or extreme tiredness or restlessness. Warning signs often appear after the fever has gone away. For more information about dengue and mosquitobite prevention, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at CDC.gov/dengue. 22

GOLF MESSAGE FROM THE PRO SHOP By Kevin Baker, General Manager First, I would like to thank all of the Lake Ashton residents who have joined the club. We truly appreciate your support and commitment to Lake Ashton Golf. A special thank you also goes to those who have added the Legacy option to their membership. Your participation helps us continue to invest in the future of the club and our golf facilities. If you are still thinking about joining, please stop by the Golf Shop. We would be happy to answer your questions and explain the different membership options available. October Golf Rates: Beginning in October, the resident golf rates will be $75 for 18 holes and $40 for 9 holes. If you plan to play after 3 pm, please remember to call the Golf Shop and register for your round. Even though late afternoon times are more flexible, it is still important that we know who is playing so we can keep the tee sheet accurate and properly manage the golf course. If you are a Lake Ashton resident who is still considering membership and would like to play after 3 pm, simply call or leave a message at the Golf Shop, and we will make sure you are registered and charged the appropriate resident rate. If you forget to register, our late volunteer rangers are happy to help you get signed up when they are out on the course. LA NFL Club: We have also received quite a few questions about the LA NFL Club and weekly seating at the Eagles Nest. Members participating in the LA NFL Club will have priority seating for that week's games, with weekly reservations beginning on Sunday, one week prior to the games. If all of the tables have already been reserved, don't let that stop you from coming out! Everyone is welcome at the Eagles Nest to enjoy the games and cheer on their favorite team with fellow Lake Ashton fans. Many guests leave throughout the day, and seats frequently become available as the games progress. Grab your team gear, come on down and enjoy a Sunday at the Nest! Something New Coming to the Eagles Nest: Later in October, we will be showcasing a new mobile app that will allow you to order food directly from the Eagles Nest. This new option will make it even more convenient to enjoy your favorite Eagles Nest food and beverages. More information will be coming soon, so stay tuned! Thank you again for your continued support of Lake Ashton Golf and the Eagles Nest. We appreciate all of you who continue to make our club a great place to play, eat, socialize and enjoy time with friends. We look forward to seeing you around the Golf Shop, on the course and at the Eagles Nest! 43

Mark your calendars for November 14 and get ready to paint Lake Ashton pink! This year’s Pink Ribbon Golf Tournament is proudly sponsored by Lake Ashton Golf Management, with 100% of the funds raised donated to the Breast Cancer Foundation of Central Florida (BCFCF). The BCFCF is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to easing the financial burden faced by local breast cancer patients and their families. While patients are undergoing active treatment, the Foundation provides financial assistance for essential nonmedical expenses such as rent or mortgage payments, utilities, car repairs and payments, gasoline for treatment-related travel, and childcare. The Foundation also offers a Children’s Fund, providing financial assistance for each child in a household following the family’s initial application LakeAshtonStorage.com Convenient Storage Inside Lake Ashton RV & Boat Storage AC & Non-AC Units Marina Slips 44 approval, as well as additional support during the holidays. This is a wonderful organization making a real difference in the lives of families right here in Central Florida, and Lake Ashton is proud to support its mission. On November 14, Lake Ashton will come together for the Pink Ribbon Golf Tournament. Last year, our amazing community raised and donated more than $65,000 to the Foundation through sponsors, donations, silent auctions and tournament registrations. Our 2026 goal is to meet or exceed that incredible total! Golfers can sign up at the Pro Shop beginning in late October. You can register as a foursome, a pair or an individual. The tournament is a four-person scramble, with a member fee of $45 and a non-member fee of $75. Registration includes a continental breakfast, a round of golf, lunch generously provided once again by Glory Days, and a donation to the Breast Cancer Foundation of Central Florida. Registration closes November 7. Sponsorship opportunities are available from $50 to $1,000. If you would like to become a sponsor, a sponsorship form can be downloaded from the Lake Ashton website. A heartfelt thank you goes to everyone who has already donated, sponsored, volunteered or supported this event. Your generosity truly makes a difference! You don’t have to be a golfer to be part of this special day. Volunteers are needed to help make the tournament a success. If you are not golfing but would be willing to lend a hand, please contact Lydia Fichtman at 215-290-9375 or Rita Lee at 484-431-4243. Your time and help will be greatly appreciated! Lake Ashton has never failed to rise to a challenge, and this year will be no different. So, Lake Ashton, GET YOUR PINK ON! Let’s come together, have some fun, support an incredible cause and light up Lake Ashton pink! P.S. Our girl is back! However, she may look a little different this year. Keep an eye out. A special thank you to Karen Ferrande!
LA NINERS By Pamela June The Niners closed out their summer season with sweat and tears. No blood, and only tears from a lot of laughter. One of the final team events of the season was the Pink Ball Shamble. Played in a traditional Shamble format, each team selects the best drive, then every golfer plays her own ball until it is holed. The team score is determined from the two best net scores. The caveat was that each team had one precious Pink Ball, rotating it from player to player each hole. The catch is that your team must finish the round still in possession of that Pink Ball to stay in the competition. Lose it, and your team is out. East Course, Hole 11, over the water certainly raised some collective anxiety for the teams. Needless to say, whoever had the Pink Ball took it easy and did not engage in any heroics! The photos are the teams that were up for the challenge. And all teams managed to hold on to the Pink Ball! Winning team pictured below left. will want to be there for your chance to win one of several $20 gift cards. And of course, to share camaraderie, joy and the relaxed vibes that define the Niners. October Games Lineup October 6: Par 3 Scramble (Lunch with Friends) October 13: Individual Low Putts October 20: Shamble – 2 Best Nets October 27: Throw Out 2 (Show your Halloween Spirit). The Niners Winter Season begins October 1. Registration forms are available at the Clubhouse, HFC, and the Pro Shop, and membership is $35. That is all you need to join this great group of ladies, except of course your positive attitude and playful spirit. With that you are set for another great season of golf, along with friendships, fun and periodic Lunch with Friends. The Niners look forward to welcoming back their Snowbirds. This year our Opening Day Festivities will be on November 3. You 45 LALGA By Bev Hines The LAMGA/LALGA Shirts and Skirts Tournament will be held October 27 and 28.
