Peanut Butter Monday (third Monday) is the monthly collection of non-perishable items, to be donated to a local non-profit. This month the items collected will be donated to Victory Ridge Academy, a local nonprofit organization and member of the Polk County Public/Charter Schools, where children with special needs overcome daily challenges and enjoy success in learning and living. The following items are needed: Gallon baggies, fruit cups, cereal bars, small individual cereal boxes, macaroni cups or small boxes, ravioli, spaghetti-o’s, etc., crackers, juice boxes, pudding cups, macaroni in micro cups. HEA LTH SCREENIN GS & MORE OCTOBER 9 Staff is working hard to try and bring basic health services to you, in your community! Now health services are just a golf cart ride away. On October 9 there will be several healthcare vendors at Monday Coffee. Central Florida Healthcare will be onsite offering FREE oral cancer screenings, blood pressure checks, and BMI reviews in the Ballroom, in addition to FREE biometric scans in their mobile unit that will be parked in the west parking lot. Future dates will be booked which will offer a wider variety of medical and dental services in their mobile unit. Be sure to speak to a representative on October 9 to see if they accept your insurance. Additionally, 3D Mobile Mammography will be at Monday Coffee on October 9 to discuss their mobile mammography bus services. WELCOME TO LAKE ASHTON New residents of Lake Ashton can sign up at either Activities Desk and online for a New Resident Orientation held November 3 in the HFC at 2 pm. This is an opportunity to meet community leaders and other new residents, and get information about the community. New residents can also stop by the Clubhouse or HFC during operating hours to receive a welcome packet, sign up for community-wide emails, and more. CLUBHOUSE OPEN HOUSE There will be an Open House at the Clubhouse November 18 from 4 to 8 pm and all Lake Ashton residents are invited to check out the newly refurbished amenities at the Clubhouse and mingle with friends and neighbors. There will be snacks and non-alcoholic beverages set up throughout the Clubhouse. Charm City will offer happy hour pricing for drinks and appetizers in the restaurant during the entire event. This is a free event and there is no need to sign up, just stop by anytime between 4 and 8 pm. We hope to see everyone there! WELCOME COMMITTEE The Lake Ashton Welcome Committee is being resurrected! A facilitator has volunteered and is now looking for a group of friendly, helpful residents to be a part of the "committee". If you would like to share a few hours a month getting to know and help new neighbors, please email cwells@lakeashtoncdd.com. The only requirements are that you are community minded and interested in being helpful to new residents. The first meeting will be held the last week in November. SHREDDING EVENT Save the date for a shredding event on November 11 sponsored by the Lake Wales Breakfast Rotary with donations being accepted for Honduras relief. ELECTRONICS RECYCLING Recycle your electronics on November 28 at the Clubhouse. Drop-off starts at 9 am, and no drop-offs will be accepted after 12:30 pm. CLUBHOUSE CARD ROOM/MEDIA CENTER CENTER SWITCHEROO The switching of the spaces utilized by the Card Room and Media Center was completed on September 9. Compliments have been flowing in and we are happy to hear residents love these new spaces. Thank you to the following volunteers for the many hours dedicated to putting tables, chairs, and bookcases together, boxing (and unboxing) Media Center books, and everything in between that led to two amazing new rooms in the Clubhouse: Diana Benzenburg, Mary Blue, Susan Castillo, Al Cooney, Anna Marie Cooney, Terry Fordham, Cynthia Harris, Gretchen Franz, Mary Morasky, Stu Neuberger, George Pollock, Lyn Rogers, Tony Tapper, and Linda Warden. Stop by during the Clubhouse Open House on November 18 to check these new rooms out, in addition to the newly refurbished Pool/Spa area and the newly laid Bowling Alley flooring. MEDIA CENTER REDEDICATION The Media Center was dedicated in memory of Murray Zacharia in October 2019, upon his passing. With the Media Center moving into another space in the Clubhouse, staff reached out to his wife for help with finding the perfect location for the original dedication plaque. Linda Zacharia (below right) can be seen in the Media Center with the original plaque, in the perfect location. Now that the perfect spot was found for the plaque, something just seemed to be missing. Golfers know Murray created the Blue Man Golf Group, as his wife says, after they attended a Blue Man Group concert in Orlando, so it was only fitting that a picture be added that shows his joy after a hole-in-one in Lake Ashton. Now, you may ask, why name it the Blue Man Group, after a musical group. Where is the connection? Well, Murray loved a great play on words. It is called the Blue Man Group because they all play from the Blue tees. **Ah Ha** The group continues to play today and under Bill Bothwell's leadership and with the help of Linda and Murray's son Seth, celebrates Murray during an Annual Memorial Golf Tournament in his honor. Murray was the epitome of a dedicated steward of the Lake Ashton Community. He was on every board and committee that would have him and truly helped mold Lake Ashton into the amazing community that it is. There wasn't a time that he could be found in the Clubhouse without a newspaper, book, or notebook in his hand. He was at every meeting that was held at Lake Ashton, even when he wasn't on one of the boards. He was one of few people that loved a good meeting. He was an information man with a wealth of knowledge that he was willing to share with anyone and his heart was dedicated to Lake Ashton. He is missed everyday by those that had the pleasure of knowing him and it is our honor to be able to rededicate this special place to an amazing person. 7

RECURRING ROOM RESERVATION RENEWALS Group facilitators are encouraged to reach out to Clubhouse Office Manager Sheila Moreland via email at smoreland@lakeashtoncdd.com to ensure contact information on file is correct. Forms will be sent electronically to facilitators on November 1 to renew recurring reservations for 2024. Forms need to be returned by November 17. After this date your reserved room cannot be guaranteed. As a reminder, annual Club events can be booked at any time, up to 3 years in advance. Please reach out to Sheila at the email above or via phone at 863-324-5457 with any questions. Please be mindful of the following excerpted policies from the Joint Amenity Facilities Policies as it relates to reserving facilities. With the exception of designated Open Play (as defined in Section X – Amenity Policies – General Usage), reservations may be available for up to two (2) hour increments for all facilities listed in this policy, with the exception of the Clubhouse Ballroom and HFC Community Center. These can be reserved for periods up to four (4) hours. Longer time increments may be approved by the Amenity Manager. Amenities that have not been reserved are available for use on a “first come, first served” basis. There are no personal standing weekly reservations allowed for the Amenity Facilities listed in the reservation policies. Lake Ashton activities taking place within the Amenity Facilities should be open to all Lake Ashton residents and not be labeled as “private”. If a standing reservation made by a registered Club, Group, or Organization is cancelled or unused more than three (3) times in a six (6)-month period then the reservation may be revoked by the Amenity Manager. This does not apply to a Club, Group, or Organization going on a planned hiatus previously arranged with Staff. JOINT AMENITY FACILITIES POLICY HIGHLIGHT CARD ROOMS/HFC BILLIARD ROOM/CLUBHOUSE GAME ROOM/HFC POKER ROOM 1. Due to the large demand for these rooms, reservations should include the number of tables required to meet the needs of the group. Tables not used will be made available for use by another group or Individual. 2. Amenity reservations are non-exclusive. At the Amenity Manager’s discretion and depending upon scheduling availability, reservations for multiple groups may be booked at the same time in this room. When multiple group activities are scheduled, please be courteous of others. 3. Residents booking the Clubhouse Game Room for a Lake Ashton Club, Group, or Organization meeting or activity should be aware that the room will still be available for Billiards play. You might notice a few changes at the Clubhouse, including procedures for signing up for events and purchasing tickets. TicketLeap was introduced to residents in July and staff is here to help with this new transition. Residents are encouraged to stop by the Activities Office during posted office hours for assistance on how to navigate this new program. As we move into a digital world it's important to emphasize a community mindset based on social inclusion and it starts with you! Sit at a new table at Monday Coffee, invite neighbors to an event that you are attending, come to one of the new resident socials and sit with someone new. Lake Ashton is an amazing retirement community, mainly because of the people that live here. Haven magazine thinks so as well. Lake Ashton was recently voted Best Retirement Community in their "Best of Haven" issue. On an everyday basis residents should represent what makes Lake Ashton an amazing community: Having pride in your community, respecting and supporting one another, and encouraging and embracing cultural diversity and social interaction among generations. These things, among others, are what makes a community a community! Looking back to this time three years ago, residents were going through real tests of strength and resilience. Zoom social gatherings were raising spirits while residents were out trying to enjoy social activities during an uncertain time. Let's reflect on those times and ensure social interaction is as important now as it was during those challenging times. This is part of a yearly maintenance plan that includes pressure washing and sealing to help extend the life of the bridges. October always brings in our annual Breast Cancer Walk, which will be held on October 13 at 9 am. There will be two routes just like last year. One is ¾ mile and the other is 1 ½ mile long. There will be a breakfast after for those who participated. We will have a guest speaker from the Breast Cancer Foundation of Central Florida bringing the latest updates on detection and treatment. Please participate in this very important event! Throughout the month of Breast Cancer Awareness, we will be adding names of those who are fighting, who have survived, and who we have lost to the battle of Breast Cancer to our Wall of Stars. Feel free to call or stop by the HFC Activities Desk to give us a name to add to our wall. Also, during the month of October we encourage our residents that participate in our exercise class to wear pink. In every class you attend all you would have to do when you’re wearing pink is to put a “P” next to your name when you sign in. At the end of the month, we will tally up the number of times a person wears pink and the person who has the most tallies wins a prize. In keeping with our spooky month, we will have on October 13 our Annual Halloween Party with DJ Wayne that will start from 7 to 10 pm. While costumes are not mandatory, but they will be welcomed. We will be giving prizes for the Best Costume, Originality, and Spookiest. So come on out and join the local ghouls and spirits for a fun time! Last month the Lake Ashton II Board approved an upgrade to the resident access control system for our West Gate. The same type of system will be instituted at the East Gate so there will be one system for residents to use. This will enhance the security of our community by changing out the “clickers” currently used and are no longer secure. Plans are being developed to implement this in the coming months, ensuring a smooth transition. There are many many upcoming activities planned including the Lake Ashton Veterans Association USO Dance featuring Good Stuff Band on November 10, New Year at the HFCs New Years Celebration, and more. 12

PET OWNER REMINDERS native is less invasive. Coral Honeysuckle is a vine that can grow up to 15 ft. or more tall. It can be contained in a large container. It only requires pruning once a year. Growers can shape the vine to fit their style or needs. It is forgives hard pruning in Spring or Fall. This plant is considered an evergreen in Central Florida. Since it is cold tolerant, it does not lose all its leaves in our winter months. It does so in colder climates up north. Best of all, It is drought tolerant once established. Honeysuckle will bloom from Spring through Fall before the flowers mature into berries. It has more showy blooms in an area with at least 6 hours of sun. Coral Honeysuckle is maintenance free and requires little watering once established. It is close to pest free! You’ll enjoy the beautiful blooms and hummingbirds visits to its tubular flowers. Don’t be fooled into thinking it’s a lot of work! The Japanese Honeysuckle is the one that gives this vine a bad rap! You can find Coral Honeysuckle at Native Plant Nurseries. WETLANDS AND CONSERVATION AREAS OF LAKE ASHTON Many residents live close to wetlands or protected areas. A wetland performs numerous beneficial functions for the ecosystem. As a giant sponge, they enhance water quality by removing pollutants before they reach our beautiful lake and protect residents from flooding. The Lake Ashton Community Development District has a contract with an aquatics vendor for the maintenance of certain wetlands and conservation areas. These regions fall under the jurisdiction of the Southwest The Joint Amenity Facilities Policies states that "Handlers are responsible for picking up after their pets and disposing of any waste in a designated pet waste receptacle." Violations are subject to the suspension process as outlined in the full policy. The bags located in the dispensers at the Pet Play Parks and by the Clubhouse Tennis Courts are for use while at the Park or walking around the amenities only. Under no circumstance should users take large quantities of the bags for use outside of these areas. Put down all umbrellas prior to leaving the Pet Play Park. The umbrellas could be damaged during windy days. Several umbrellas have been damaged over the past fiscal year. Wildlife Corner Photo & Article By Barbara Ann Comer The Anhinga , a bird of southeastern swamps, breeds here at Lake Ashton. The gawky, white young are sometimes mistaken for baby White Pelicans (which do not breed in Florida). Being able to vary its buoyancy in water and sometimes swimming with only the head and neck above water earned it the nickname "Snakebird." Another nickname is "Water Turkey." This bird is frequently confused with the Double-crested Cormorant found in the same habitat. However, the Anhinga's neck, tail and pointed bill are longer. The adult male Anhinga displays a beautiful pattern of silvery white on the wings while drying them (pictured at left). The female Anhinga (pictured above) has a light-brown neck and can be remembered as going nowhere without her mink stole. Anhingas feed by spearing a fish with their sharp bills and then quite the struggle can ensue as they work to get the fish off the bill and down the hatch. NEED TO REPLACE YOUR MAILBOX? Lot owners are responsible for the maintenance and appearance of their mailboxes. If a mailbox is damaged in any way or must be replaced, it shall only be replaced with an approved unit. SAFETY PARKING & ROAD SAFETY REMINDERS Residents are reminded that the speed limit throughout all of Lake Ashton is 20 mph and all golf carts, vehicles, and bicycles (including electric bicycles) should make a complete stop just before the white stop bar whether before or after the posted stop sign. It only takes a moment to follow the traffic controls that are in place that could potentially prevent a serious accident. The Lake Wales and Winter Haven Police Department patrol in Lake Ashton on a regular basis. Please take a little extra time to ensure you maneuver throughout the community as safely as possible to avoid a ticket and more importantly, an accident. The following excerpt was taken from Florida State Statute 316.1945 Stopping, standing, or parking prohibited in specified places. For the full statue, scan the QR code with your smartphone. No person shall stand or park a vehicle, whether occupied or not, except momentarily to pick up or discharge a passenger or passengers: 1. In front of a public or private driveway. 2. Within 15 feet of a fire hydrant. 3. Within 20 feet of a crosswalk at an intersection. 4. Within 30 feet upon the approach to any flashing signal, stop sign, or traffic control signal located at the side of a roadway. Keep in mind the streets in Lake Ashton are very narrow and there are many forms of traffic which heightens the danger during busy times. The information listed above will be passed along to vendors to ensure they are following the established state statutes. The following items will also help to alleviate dangerous situations on the road. • Do not park a vehicle directly parallel to another vehicle. • Do not park on a curve. • Park as close to the curb as possible. 18 Residents can help by informing vendors that are performing work at their home of the parking "good practices" above. With everyone's help the streets of Lake Ashton will be as safe as possible. STATE OF FLORIDA SETS NEW GOLF CART AGE REQUIREMENTS Recent state legislation changes have increased the age for golf cart drivers taking effect October 1. The law requires that a person operating a golf cart on public roads or streets who is under 18 years of age must possess a valid learner’s permit or driver’s license. Please note, Lake Wales PD and Winter Haven PD can issue a ticket for violations of this law. Residents can sign up online or at the Clubhouse Activities Office to cook chili or donate baked goods, which should be individually wrapped for the dessert table. We’ve been told that if we eat fat, we will gain fat; but it’s just not that simple. It is true that fat provides most of the fuel that our cells will burn for energy, but our body will burn carbohydrates before it burns fat in an effort to keep our blood sugar levels down. That’s because carbohydrates cause a spike in our blood sugar level which can lead to all kinds of problems in the body by piling up in places where it doesn’t belong, such as the heart, arteries and the liver. Impairing normal function, causing damage, and increasing your risk for heart disease, fatty liver, etc. Choose fiber-rich good carbs, like whole-grain breads and cereals, unprocessed grains, beans, wholewheat pasta, fruit, yogurt, vegetables. Limit simple sugars like candy, cake, soda, and highly processed or fried foods. LA SWIM CLUB By Sandy White Lake Ashton Swim Club members are busy at the pool. Some fitness swimmers count their laps with an initial goal of swimming to Daytona Beach or 100 miles, including one of our swimmers who has almost reached 300 miles. Others participate in, or are aiming for, senior age group competition as part of the national Senior Games program, which offers regional and statewide competition, divided by gender and age groups. Congratulations to members Cathy Liska and Sandy Papineau (pictured) for their participation in the 22nd Annual Gainesville Senior Games meet. They brought home eight medals between them, including a gold for Sandy in her most challenging event; and their finishes qualified them for the State Championships, which will be held December 2 and 3 in Temple Terrace. The competitive members of the club will swim at the Golden Age Games in Sanford on Nov. 5. That meet is the oldest in the country, and our swimmers find it to be one of the best. If anyone is interested in trying it out as part of the Lake Ashton team, let coach Sandy know at sandyw1994@aol.com. The entry deadline is Oct. 20. All Senior Games meets are open to anyone 50 & over. Fitness swimmers are always welcome at the club workouts on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays at the HFC Indoor Pool. SENIOR SOFTBALL By Bob Zelazny Winter Haven Senior Softball Club offers men and women over the age of 55 years the opportunity to play organized slow pitch softball. There are over 160 men and women members (thirteen reside in Lake Ashton) that compete on a regular basis. Games are played at the DiamondPlex located on 6th Street across from Polk State College. Games are played on Tuesday and Friday mornings and start at 9 am (check in at 8:30). You should be home by noon. The league is organized into two divisions: players 55-68, and players 69 and older. Rules have been put in place to ensure player safety and provide for a fair level of competition. Runners are available if you have bad knees. Actual league play runs from January thru March. During that time, players will be assigned to a team that will compete for the season title. Cost is just $40 for the year which includes two uniforms and a hat, three social events with a family barbecue at the end of the season, and a year’s worth of fun and exercise. If you are unsure at this time, you can come out and play one game for free. If you are interested contact Bob Zelazny at 863-325-8098. He can explain the program and get you in touch with local players for carpooling to the games. SINGLES CLUB By Maureen Ziegler LA Singles is a social group that plans activities for single residents. The group meets on the first Sunday of the month at 2 pm in the Clubhouse Ballroom. In September, 33 people attended the 38

(continued) meeting. The group discussed future events. On October 19 from 4 – 6 pm, a Halloween Mingle will be held in the Pavilion. Judy Perry and Suzanne are setting up for the Mingle and would welcome helpers. On December 15, Deb Kreider will host the Christmas party in her home at 5:30 pm. If you would like to take part in activities with other singles, attend the meeting on October 1. LA ROCKERS By Connie Strassberg During the pandemic, there wasn’t much any of us could do, so the LA Rockers was started as part of the Kindness Project. The group has grown by leaps and bounds from that day, with over 150 active members currently, and others who just paint on their own. In addition to hiding “Kindness Rocks” for all of our neighbors to find and leaving a welcome rock for our new neighbors, we have donated holiday rocks to several nursing homes in the area, theme rocks to the Breast Cancer Awareness Fundraiser, and to similar community projects. We have a lot of fun gathering for “classes” and painting together. LA Rockers will meet in the HFC ballroom from 2:00 to 4:00 twice a month. On the first Wednesday of the month, experienced members will share their skills with the LA Rockers who have already been to meetings. On the third Wednesdays of the month, LA Rockers will hold a "free paint" session where newcomers are welcome to join the group. Newcomers will be lent the supplies they need for their first session; however, they MUST contact MJ Richards (mjmrichards517@gmail.com) at least five days before their first meeting so that she can be prepared with supplies and be able to contact them if the meeting has to be canceled. Please remember that the point is not to paint a masterpiece, but to have a good time. This month LA Rockers will meet on October 4 and 18. LAMGA By David Kubissa The highlight for September was the special two-day LAMGA Ryder Cup on Sept. 6 and 7. LAMGA golfers were split into Red and Blue teams playing formats patterned after the actual Ryder Cup competition that took place in Rome, Italy, last month. At the end of Day 1, the Red team led the LAMGA competition with 11 ½ points to the Blue team’s 10 ½ points. On Day 2, the Red team widened its lead and ended up with 38 ½ points to Blue team’s 28 ½ points . Day 2 concluded with a lunch in the Eagle’s Nest. Another special two-day event is on the calendar for November 6 and 7 that will bring together LAMGA and LALGA – the women’s golf association – for a mixer. Look for details and a signup sheet this month. In regular weekly play, the race for the top spots in the Red Hoagland Hyundai Challenge remains tight going into the final months of the year. The standings through the end of August are: 1. John Milsom, $151.25; 2. Paul Panone, $132.75; 3. Rolly Geyer, $129.25; 4. Doug Hines, $123.50; 5. Rick Simonetta, $115.00. Rules reminder: Last month, Lake Ashton pro Ian Peterson explained the out of bounds penalty options in an effort to clarify how to play your ball when it crosses the dreaded white lines or stakes on the golf course. LAMGA’s board reminds members playing the weekly game that the lift, clean and place rule in effect applies only to a ball lying in the fairway, not the rough. Moving a ball in the rough into a preferred lie is against the rules and incurs a one-stroke penalty, as stated in USGA rules. In addition, all balls that count for scoring in LAMGA competition must be putted out. No gimmes. Of course, lift, clean and place is permitted on the green, but make sure to mark the spot of the ball and replace it on that spot. This requirement is also spelled out in the USGA rules.
