Fall is in full swing in Lake Ashton with pumpkins and brightly colored leaves displayed throughout the Clubhouse and activity calendars bulging with fun! In this edition of the LA Times (and every issue for that matter) it is apparent why Haven Magazine in Winter Haven named Lake Ashton as the “Best Retirement Community” in their Best of Haven Home 2022 issue. Supervisors and Staff work hard to ensure there is a robust offering of classes and activities for residents to enjoy and amenities are kept in tip top shape. With that being said there are resident feedback forms located outside of the Community Director's Office and Facility Repair Forms located in each amenity room in the Clubhouse. Please complete a form if you notice something in need of repair and submit feedback concerning your experiences at the Clubhouse. Staff is here for you...to make your events go off without a hitch, to help advertise and promote your group activities, and to ensure you live your best retirement life. With the return of summer travelers traffic counts will begin to increase in Lake Ashton. With that being said please be sure to take your time when maneuvering throughout the community. Be sure to wear reflective clothing when walking or biking during hours when light is limited and always walk facing traffic. Please see page 20 for more information on how to keep our streets and residents safe. Please remember storm season runs until November 30. All residents should be prepared for severe weather. Helpful storm preparation resources can be found at either Activities Desk. Be mindful of lightning monitors throughout the community and seek shelter when needed. Supervisors met on September 19 to discuss the Request for Proposal (RFP) for Restaurant services at the Lake Ashton Clubhouse. The RFP has been sent to several interested parties and industry professionals. In addition, a not to exceed amount of $2,000 was approved to advertise the RFP in local trade journals. The Restaurant Lease Agreement will be discussed at a later date. Maintenance agreements for pool maintenance, aquatic management, security, and landscape maintenance were presented and all were renewed subject to adding language requiring pricing increases be submitted 90 days prior to renewal date. A cost savings analysis was presented and staff will continue to work on additional areas for savings. Please refer to the Community Director report for detailed information. Options to refurbish the landscape along Lake Ashton Blvd. were presented and additional options will be presented at the October Board of Supervisors meeting. A wrap up report of additional actions was sent out via email on September 25. All residents are encouraged to attend. The meetings can be attended in person or via Zoom. 8

Wearing pink will get you points toward a price for “the most pink appearances in October”. We’ll have a honor/memory wall with names of individuals affected by this cruel disease. The Breast Cancer Walk on October 7th. will also be attended by Sheriff Grady Judd. The breakfast to follow will be the reward for the walkers who finish. There are two routes this year. One is ¾ mile long and the other is 1 ½ mile long. The Rusty Trumpet Dance on the 14th. It is a Halloween Dance, but a portion of the take at the door will go to our general fund for the Lake Ashton breast cancer donations. The donations for the month will be donated to the Breast Cancer Foundation of Central Florida and will be reported in an eblast and next month’s newsletter article. The LA II Board of Supervisors met on September 16th and Warren Construction received the winning bid for the HFC roof replacement. The District Engineer will be reviewing the contract in detail before work begins. Landscaping services will have a review completed for the October meeting. A new security golf cart will be purchased with FY 2023 funds. As I write this article, the weather is daunting…Ian is scheduled to be in Florida this week. Here’s knowing we were prepared, but not needed to be so. LA II CDD Candidate Forum LA West residents are encouraged to attend the upcoming 2022 Forum on Wednesday, October 26. Roy Aull and Duff Hill, who want to fill Seat 1 on our CDD II Board of Supervisors, will be participating in this event. The forum will begin promptly at 1:00 p.m. and will conclude no later than 2:30 p.m. As elected officials, members of our CDD Board of Supervisors hold important positions within our community. They are responsible for how our community is managed and how assessment funds are spent. Therefore, LA West residents are urged to submit questions they have for these candidates to mbosman@lakeashton2cdd.com or by depositing them into the Forum Question Box provided at the HFC. Remember to include your name and address on your questions. All questions must be submitted by noon on October 19. 10

RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT: LAKE ASHTON SUPPORTS OUR SPECIAL OLYMPIANS Did you know that there is no upper age limit to participate in Special Olympics? That’s right. White hair and baldness grace the crowns of many of Polk County’s Special Olympians, volunteers, coaches, and unified partners. The photo above shows the participants in the LASSO Bowling Rec League: Seated L-R: Josh Peek and Colton Morosky. The athletes are proudly wearing their blue ribbons—earned at the County and Area games. Polk County has a robust Special Olympics bowling program, and Lake Ashton’s LASSO Rec League helps to foster our resident participants, their families, and friends. Other residents of Lake Ashton have stepped forward to show their support by coaching and encouraging our athletes along their journey. A special shout out goes to resident Dennis Yenor who has devoted significant time in support of our athletes at Lake Ashton Lanes, at Polk County practices, and even at the competitions. On any given day, you will likely see Lake Ashton’s very own Jonathan Barrell at the Clubhouse bowling alley where he spends countless hours honing his skills. All that practice really paid off, as he won first place in the State Bowling Competition in September, along with Shawn Squires. Congratulations! Special Olympics strives to create a better world by fostering the acceptance and inclusion of all people. Through the power of sports, people with intellectual disabilities discover new strengths and abilities, skills and success. Our athletes find joy, confidence and fulfillment—on the playing field and in life. DRIVER'S LICENSE CHECKS Residents and guests entering via the visitors gate at either entrance to Lake Ashton should be prepared to show their driver's license when checking in with the Security Officer on duty. This is done to confirm the identity of the person entering the community. This is a procedure designed to add an additional level of security for residents' peace of mind and by no means meant to be intrusive. BOWLING LANES REMINDERS • Open Bowling is available on Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays. The lanes are available on a first come, first served basis and leagues are not booked on these dates. • Reservations can be made by all residents on days that are not listed as open bowling. Please see Sheila Moreland in the Club Office to reserve the number of lanes needed for Tuesday - Friday play. • Bowling shoes are required when using the bowling lanes. Please bring your own or use a pair from those provided near the entrance to the lanes. • The bowling machines are all self scoring. If you are unsure how to operate the machines or need assistance, please contact staff. • No one is allowed past the foul line or on a bowling lane at any time. • Proper bowling etiquette shall be adhered to at all times. The use of profanity or disruptive behavior is prohibited. • No food or drinks are allowed in the approach area. • If at any time the equipment fails to operate properly or your ball does not return, please contact staff or security (863-324-7290) for assistance. • No one is allowed behind the pin setting machines without Amenities Manager’s permission. • Return all balls and shoes to racks when you have finished bowling. • Guests must be accompanied by an adult who understands the rules if under the age of eighteen (18). PET PLAY PARK REMINDERS • Please remember to pick up after your dog and dispose of the bags in the receptacles provided. • Put down all umbrellas prior to leaving the Pet Play Park. The umbrellas could be damaged during windy days. 14 • The bags located in the dispensers at the Pet Play Parks and by the Clubhouse Tennis Courts are for use while at the Park or walking around the amenities only. Under no circumstance should users take large quantities of the bags for use outside of these areas. • The Districts have recently installed new grass in the Pet Play Parks. To keep the grass in good shape users are encouraged to stop dogs from digging and fill any holes with the sand provided to ensure the grass stays in good shape for years to come. TREES PLANTED IN CLUBHOUSE PET PLAY PARK The Gar den Club, Supervisors, residents, Chloe the dog, and staff joined Gene, the Barefoot Gardener, on September 6 for some post Labor Day labor. Two Live Oak Trees were planted in the Clubhouse Pet Play Park to pr ovide shade for future users of the park. Thank you to all that participated in planting the trees. Chloe even found a little shade from the new trees. Stop by and take a look. Please help the trees get established by keeping dogs away from the growing trees as much as possible.

LA LOOKS Native Flowers of Central Florida By Lynn Davis Florida’ s state wildflower is the coreopsis, better known as the tickseed. There are about 15 different species. The species lance-leaf grows naturally. Though it’s a short-lived perennial (returns every year), it often reseeds. It’s primarily a spring bloomer, but with some deadheading will bloom into summer. The tickseed bought at local home improvement stores and some nurseries often are non-native. To find native species google: Florida Native Flower/Plants or visit thenectarylkld.com, located in Lakeland. Why plant tickseed in your yard? Tickseed is drought tolerant, attracts pollinators, may be used in tea, has been known to be used for medical ailments and is easy to maintain. Enjoy and reap the benefits of planting native flowers! LAKE ASHTON WETLANDS AND CONSERVATION AREAS Many residents live near a wetland or conservation area. A wetland has many positive roles that serve the ecosystem. They improve water quality by cleaning out the pollutants before they reach our beautiful lake and protect residents from flooding, acting as giant sponge. Lake Ashton CDD has a contract with an aquatics vendor to maintain certain wetlands and conservation areas. These areas are governed by the Southwest Florida Water Management District. We ask that residents refrain from entering these areas or planting plants as it is prohibited. If there are any questions or concerns, email Matt Fisher at MFisher@lakeashtoncdd.com. SAFEGUARD STORM DRAINS FRIENDLY REMINDER: Please remember to put umbrellas down after use when visiting the Pool, Bocce Courts, or Pet Play Parks. Leaving them up can potentially cause them to be damaged by wind and rain. 16 Never place loose vegetation on top of storm drains, as it can fall or blow into the storm drain and clog the stormwater system. Yard waste and bulk trash or items that will not fit into the containers should be placed at the curb no more than 48 hours prior to pick-up. In no event shall any items for pickup be placed in the street. Call the City of Lake Wales, Customer Service (863-678-4182, ext.226) or City of Winter Haven (863-291-5756) Trash and Garbage Office for information about scheduled pickup or to arrange for an unscheduled pickup.

LA ( LW) HOA CORNER By Tom Hevel The HOA has been very busy through the summer and will be even busier this Fall. In mid-October all Lake Wales residents will be sent revised covenants, conditions and restrictions for Lake Ashton. You will find the revisions in total and a proxy form with a return mailing envelope. Residents can either send in their proxy or come to the special meeting in November and vote. The HOA Board and a committee of residents have been working for over two years on these revisions. The Board wishes to thank the committee for their hard work and input in this important process. Many of the revisions have to do with the developer no longer being involved with the East HOA and much of the CC&Rs addressed those concerns. The HOA wants input from the community as well and as such have put together a YOUTUBE video detailing the changes, and will have public meetings before the vote to address residents' concerns and questions. They help keep the cows free of insects and also enjoy freshly mown fields. At Lake Ashton you are more likely to see one perched on an automobile as if mistaking it for a cow. They are white with a yellow bill and legs. Much smaller than Great Egrets, they are even a little smaller than a Snowy, but more stocky. Their breeding plumage adds a beautiful buff to their white plumes. Not a native bird, they hail from Africa arriving in South America on the winds of hurricanes in the late 1800s. They have spread from there and continue to work their way north arriving in Florida in the early 1950s. They are technically an exotic species, but not an invasive exotic. SAFETY NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH By Fay Wood, NW Chief Don’t Let Scammers Put Your Generosity at Risk! Unfortunately, anyone can get scammed. Here are some red flags to watch out for before giving money to a cause: • When fundraisers are more pushy than you’d expect, asking for account or SS numbers, that’s a good indication something is wrong. • Make all donations through mail or the charity’s website. • They’re so vague there’s no way to tell if they’re legit or calling from their parent’s basement. • Trying to create history by thanking you for a donation you’re not certain you made is a trick to make you feel like you already checked them out. Don’t fall for it. A Better Way — Choose Your Own Charity. To prevent high-pressure tactics getting you to part with your money, just say no to random calls! Do your own research. With this approach, you can protect your money from bogus charities and make a choice you know will give directly to the cause. PEAK STORM SEASON Hurricane season ends November 30, but the peak storm season runs from mid-August to late October. All residents should be prepared for severe weather. A list of storm season tips can be found at lakeashtoncdd.com or at the Clubhouse Information Wall. Pay attention to the lightning detection devices throughout the community and seek shelter when the sirens sound. CITIZENS ASSISTED PATROL (CAP) By Mike Weissberg Citizens Assisted Patrol (CAP) is always looking for more volunteers to patrol the streets. Come help be the eyes, ears, and presence for the Sheriff’s department. Patrols are once a week for two hours. Applications are available in the Clubhouse and HFC. PARKING & ROAD SAFETY REMINDERS Residents are reminded that the speed limit throughout all of Lake Ashton is 20 mph and all golf carts, vehicles, and bicycles (including electric bicycles) should make a complete stop just before the white stop bar whether before or after the posted stop sign. In front of a public or private driveway. 2. Within 15 feet of a fire hydrant. 3. Within 20 feet of a crosswalk at an intersection. 4. Within 30 feet upon the approach to any flashing signal, stop sign, or traffic control signal located at the side of a roadway. Keep in mind the streets in Lake Ashton are very narrow and there are many forms of traffic which heightens the danger during busy times. The information listed above will be passed along to vendors to ensure they are following the established state statutes. The following items will also help to alleviate dangerous situations on the road. • Do not park a vehicle directly parallel to another vehicle. • Do not park on a curve. • Park as close to the curb as possible. Residents can help by informing vendors that are performing work at their home of the parking "good practices" above. With everyone's help the streets of Lake Ashton will be as safe as possible. Please note that the City of Lake Wales ordinance prohibits the operation of golf carts by anyone under the age of 14 and City of Winter Haven prohibits operation by anyone under the age of 16. GOLF LALGA By Lydia Fichtman October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Clubhouse along with the LALGA is sponsoring many events during October and November. The Clubhouse is hosting a Party in Pink featuring a Dueling Pianos show on October 14 and Teas for “Tatas” on October 20. Mark your calendars and make sure to attend these incredible events. During this important month the LALGA and Niners will be selling pink bows, breast cancer shoelaces and socks and memory flowers. All proceeds from these sales will go towards the Watson Clinic Foundation donation with the funds earmarked for breast cancer research and community education. The biggest events will take place in early November. The Pink Ribbon Dance is November 6 from 7-10 pm at the Clubhouse. The Rusty Trumpet Band will provide music and the event is a BYOB and food soirée. Decorate your table representing breast cancer and win a prize. Way to go ladies! Meet Judy Mulhearn Judy Mulhearn is from Chicago and as a sophomore in high school met her husband of 59 years, Denis. They were married in 1963 and have five children, seventeen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Judy worked for her uncle in an accounting firm from 1979 – 2004 after which she retired. Judy and Denis’ son is a golf pro and Denis joined his son at a golf show in Orlando. Denis saw the ad for Lake Ashton in the back of a magazine and in 2004, Judy and Dennis decided to look at the community. After driving through the front gates they knew that Lake Ashton would be where they would retire. Judy has been playing golf for a very long time and enjoys playing with the LALGA. She also enjoys playing cards: samba, super samba, hand and foot and bridge. She loves to knit and crochet, as well as read. From speaking to her you can see how important her family is to her! TRADITIONAL MODERN CONTEMPORAR ANS tournament held on September 7th and 8th. Two teams, Blue and Red, each comprised of 22 players, competed in four different formats of match play. CLUBS LA PICKLEBALL By Sue Morris We are entering into fall and many snowbirds are returning to beautiful Lake Ashton. There are quite a few players that are regulars and new people wanting to try their hand at pickleball. Here is a quick 10 Spor tsmanship Guide Basics: 1. Treat all players and spectators with courtesy and respect. 2. Do not interrupt others that are playing. 3. Know the official rules of pickleball, apply them fairly and cooperate in any situation that is not expressly covered by the rules. 4. Practice good sportsmanship when making line calls. Respect your opponents’ right to make all calls on their end of the court. 5. Call a fault on your partner as soon as the fault occurs regardless of whether your opponents are aware of the fault. 6. Rotate on and off courts fairly, courteously and in accordance with local practice. 7. Make safety a priority, while using common sense. 8. As a stronger player in social play, be kind to other players. 9. Be considerate about playing up and playing down. 10.Be a respectful and supportive partner. LAVA VIDEO INTERVIEW OPPORTUNITY LAVA is hosting a video interview team from the Library of Congress on October 8 and 9 to interview local veterans. In the past year, the committee has achieved many milestones and has plans for additional actions in 2022-2023. Sil Wells did a mini presentation on the use of silk flowers 36 to create a floral arrangement which can be hung, put on a picture stand, or just set on a table for display. This was advance preparation for next month's project. On October 12 at 10 am the club will once again meet in the Clubhouse Craft Room. This will give ample room for the use of outlets needed to assist in the floral creations. Membership is not required, a tally of how many people are interested is needed to order supplies. LA ROCKERS By Connie Strassberg Goodbye summer; hello fall! Paint color choices may be tending toward yellows, and oranges, and browns, and themes may revolve around the upcoming fall holidays of Halloween and Thanksgiving. Some are even already painting rocks that may serve as fillers in Christmas lists. Before you know it, it will be a new year. With snowbirds returning and classes getting larger, the group will continue to meet in the HFC Community Center on alternate Wednesdays from 2 to 4 pm. Various members will continue to share their skills as they continue to paint and schmooze with Rocker friends. The point is not to paint a master piece, but to have a good time. Newcomers are always welcome and will be lent the supplies needed for your first meeting. SINGLES CLUB By Maureen Ziegler LA Singles is a social group that plans activities for single residents. The group meets monthly on the first Sunday of the month at 2 pm in the Clubhouse Ballroom. In September, the group discussed several outings and get togethers. Plans were discussed for dinners and lunches during September. The Single Mingle held on the third Thursday of the month in the Pavilion will be moved during the remaining hot months. The games offered 14 swimming events for women and 14 for men, divided into 10 age groups. Based on their finishes, all qualified to compete in their respective events at the Florida Senior Games Swimming Championships in December. Some LASC members are aiming to participate in the oldest Senior Games in the USA, the 47th Golden Age Senior Games in Sanford, FL, on November 6. The registration is open to ages 50 to 100+ with a deadline of October 20. This and other local/regional meets serve as qualifying events for the state games. You can see that in addition to fitness, stroke improvement, and socialization, the LA Swim Club offers opportunities to participate in fun, friendly competition with others. CLASSICAL MUSIC APPRECIATION / MUS IC HISTORY SERIES Join Ken Hoffman, a retired Lake Ashton resident who has taught classical music history courses for nearly a decade at various institutions including the Continuing Education Department at the University of North Florida, as he takes residents through the history of classical music chronologically, starting with the Medieval era, going to the mid-20th century. Hundreds of great musical works will be explained as well as the lives of the composers who wrote them. Residents will discuss music in the context of the other arts of the era, as well as historical events that influenced the arts; politics, wars, religion, science and technology, the rise of the middle class, the Enlightenment, etc. Sign up at the Clubhouse Information Wall as space is limited. CAREGIVERS SUPPORT An all-encompassing Caregiver Support Group facilitated by the Alzheimer's Association will be held on the third Tuesday of each month through December, beginning October 18 at 11 am in the Clubhouse Ballroom. This group is for Caregivers and Care partners of people living with Alzheimer's, Dementia, Parkinson's, ALS, Cancer, and Diabetes. People who are living with the disease are welcome to attend with their care partner. We will meet together for approximately 30 minutes and then the group will split into two separate groups with two separate facilitators. This support group is conducted by trained facilitators and is a safe place for everyone to develop a support system. Exchange practical information on challenges and possible solutions, talk through issues and ways of coping, share feelings, needs, and concerns, and learn about community resources. LA STEPPERS The popular fitness class from the 90’s is also popular here in Lake Ashton, and will continue this fall on Thursdays, October 6, November 3, and December 1 at 5 pm in the HFC Community Room. Class duration is 1 hour. Prior to class there will be a refresher of basic steps. Participants must bring their own step. There is no charge for this class.
