LA DEMOCRATIC CLUB By Shelley Miller The Lake Ashton Democratic Club monthly meeting is October 6 via Zoom and in-person at the HFC. Social time with snacks will be from 4 to 4:30. LAKE ASHTON COMMUNITY ACTION COMMITTEE By Shelley Miller The LA Community Action Committee (LACAC) was formed in October 2021 to: • Understand the potential impacts from the large housing developments to be built adjacent to Thompson Nursery Road and surrounding area • Monitor and influence where possible the Polk County plan to develop a freight corridor connecting US17 with US 27 The road construction project will entail the widening of Thompson Nursery Road across the entirety of the northern boundary of our Lake Ashton community. In the past year, the committee has achieved many milestones and has plans for additional actions in 2022-2023. Comments are welcome: contact LakeAshtonCommunityAction@gmail.com. LA GARDEN CLUB By Lynn Davis The LA Garden Club met September 14 in the Clubhouse Craft Room. Sil Wells did a mini presentation on the use of silk flowers 36 to create a floral arrangement which can be hung, put on a picture stand, or just set on a table for display. This was advance preparation for next month's project. On October 12 at 10 am the club will once again meet in the Clubhouse Craft Room. This will give ample room for the use of outlets needed to assist in the floral creations. Membership is not required, a tally of how many people are interested is needed to order supplies. Email Lynn Davis @crladavis@aol.com if interested by October 7. At the meeting garden hacks were presented. Also, the team discussed upcoming months events planned. BOOK CLUB By Margie Dersham And Still They Came, the Florida Saga Guest author: Robert James Connors The Book Club invites al l residents to this presentation on December 6 at 2:30 pm in the Clubhouse Cinema. Have you ever wondered, how Florida became such a Mecca for development? Join the book club in hearing stories of the last 200 years of development and conflicts. Special guest author, Robert James Connors, will share stories from his book, as well as a story that includes the very land Lake Ashton was developed on. His history is spun through the eyes of one family, with roots to the native Seminoles to development ties of the Keys bridge, railroads, and even Bok Tower. Mr. Connors, born in Chicago, Illinois, has published more than 1,000 h uma n - i n t e r e s t s t o r i e s , f e a t u r e s a nd commentaries. He is a former magazine managing editor, journalist, newspaper editorial writer and former Florida County Commissioner. He and his wife Susan reside in Lake Wales.
