Don't let the sun and rain intimidate you — there are plenty of fun things to do inside, and outdoor activities can also be enjoyed safely. There are multiple umbrellas at the Outdoor Pool, Pet Play Park, and Bocce Ball Courts, and the Shuffleboard Courts have benches covered by a roof for shelter from the heat and rain. Remember to wear sunscreen and stay hydrated when enjoying outdoor activities. LA(LW)CDD Supervisors met May 15. A wrap-up report of actions taken was sent out on May 17. This will take place in July, due to contractor scheduling. Stay tuned to electronic media for more information on this project, including closure information. Discussions regarding the LA(LW)CDD Fiscal Year 2024 budget (October 1, 2023 - September 30, 2024) are ongoing. The hearing to adopt the budget is set to occur on August 21, 2023 during the regularly scheduled monthly Board of Supervisors (BOS) Meeting. Speaking of which, we have replaced some equipment in the HFC Gym, installing one new treadmill, and two new ellipticals. Staff has also re-grouted the HFC showers. The Swimming pool is open for free swim unless restricted due to the scheduling of swim lessons and aquatic/recreational programs approved by the Amenity Manager. 2. There is no lifeguard on duty. Patrons and Guests swim at their own risk and must adhere to swimming pool rules at all times. 3. All Patrons must present proper identification or Guest Passes when requested by Staff. As a rule, a Resident may allow up to four (4) Guests to the swimming pool areas. 4. Use of the swimming pools is permitted only during designated hours. 5. Pool and spa availability may be limited or rotated in order to facilitate maintenance of the facility and to maintain health code regulations. 6. Any person swimming during non-posted swimming hours will be subject to suspension and termination policy. 7. Guests under eighteen (18) years of age must be accompanied by an adult at all times 8. Proper swim attire (no cutoffs) must be worn in the pool. 9. Children under three (3) years of age, and those who are not reliably toilet trained, must wear rubber-lined swim diapers, as well as a swimsuit over the swim diaper, to reduce the health risks associated with human waste in the swimming pool/deck area. 10. Adults with bladder control issues or incontinence must wear appropriate waterproof attire. 11. The changing of diapers or clothes is not allowed poolside. 12. Showers are required before entering the pool. 13. No one shall pollute the pool. Anyone who pollutes the pool is liable for any costs incurred in treating and reopening the pool. 12 14. Loud, profane, or abusive language is absolutely prohibited; no physical or verbal abuse will be tolerated. 15. Diving is prohibited; no diving, jumping, pushing, running, throwing any item or other horseplay is allowed in the pool or on the pool deck area. 16. No pets (except service animals), bicycles, skateboards, roller blades, scooters and golf carts are permitted on the pool deck area. 17. Personal audio devices and televisions are not permitted unless they are equipped with headphones and utilized or for scheduled activities. 18. Play equipment, such as floats, rafts, snorkels, flotation devices and other recreational items must meet with Staff approval. Radio controlled water craft are not allowed at any time in the pool area. The facility reserves the right to discontinue usage of such play equipment during times of peak or scheduled activity at the pool, or if the equipment causes a safety concern. 19. Pool entrances must be kept clear at all times. 20. No swinging on ladders, fences, or railings is allowed. 21. Pool furniture is not to be removed from the pool area. 22. No food or drink is allowed within the area of the wet pool deck (which is defined as the area within four (4) feet of the pool). 23. Food and drinks are permitted outside the wet pool deck area. Glass containers are prohibited. Food and non-alcoholic beverages may be brought to the pool area for personal use. 24. No chewing gum is permitted in the pool or spa or on the surrounding deck areas. 25. The Districts are not responsible for lost or stolen items. 26. Chemicals used in the pool/spa may affect certain hair or fabric colors. The Districts are not responsible for these effects. 27. Individuals with open sores should not use the pool. 28. If the lightning alarm sounds, all Patrons must evacuate the pool immediately. 29. Patrons must comply with posted signage in addition to the rules listed above.
ROOM RESERVATIONS Recurring group reservation renewals for 2024 will not take place until October 2023. To ensure this process runs smoothly when the time comes, please email contact information for the current facilitator including name, activity name, phone number, and email address to smoreland@lakeashtoncdd.com. GOOD NEIGHBOR INITIATIVE Lake Ashton Residents are always commenting on how wonderful it is to live in Lake Ashton because of the people that live here. Staff could not agree more! Recently residents may have noticed a bulletin board in the Clubhouse Foyer a question posted on it: ”What is a Good Neighbor?". We received over 20 answers to this question. In an effort to highlight some of the exceptional residents in Lake Ashton, staff would like to encourage residents to complete the forms located in the Foyer each time they notice a resident doing something neighborly. They may have brought a newsletter to someone that can't get out of their house, cooked a meal for someone having health issues, helped another during the loss of a loved one, helped a neighbor while they were away, or just exemplify what being "Simply the Best" means to you. Each month staff will choose a "Good Neighbor" and they will receive a gift and will be highlighted in the newsletter. This includes the Restaurant Patio and other outdoor amenities. If you are planning on coming to the Clubhouse or HFC for any reason please keep this policy in mind. If a service dog is in the Clubhouse or Health and Fitness Center (HFC) without a vest on, Security or Staff will assume it is a pet and will inform you of this policy, so please be patient as they are simply following protocol. The Amenity Policy also states that patrons are responsible for picking up after all pets and disposing of any waste in a designated pet waste receptacle or an outdoor trash bin as a courtesy to residents. Please keep this in mind when walking your dog around the amenities. LOOKS Wildlife Corner Photo & Article By Barbara Ann Comer The Common Nighthawk is a familiar bird in the summer skies of Lake Ashton as it flies about erratically chasing bugs and dragonflies mainly at dawn and dusk. This bird is a member of the Goatsucker or Nightjar family. It has a large mouth and flies with it wide open ingesting insects in flight. It is a mottled brown and the long pointed wings each sport a white wing bar prominent in flight. It calls attention to itself with its repeated nasal utterances "Peent, Peent." During the aerial courtship display the male's wings make a hollow booming sound as the bird plummets quickly to within a few feet of the ground. The sound is created by the air rushing through the primary flight feathers. Nighthawks are easily overlooked during the day as they perch cryptically on tree branches resembling a bump in the bark more than a bird. WAYS TO PROTECT LA PONDS THIS SUMMER Why does my pond smell? Why is our pond green and scummy looking? Almost certainly, that is algae you see. Algae blooms when water nutrients are in excess and the weather is warm and sunny. An algae bloom is the result of an excessive growth of algae. Is algae bad for the pond? A significant number of living things in the pond use algae for nourishment. Even though algae are part of the environment and do assist breaking down the nutrients in the pond, excessive amounts of algae can lead to a variety of difficulties. Sunlight is essential for the development 14 of plants. When algae grows to cover the surface of the pond, it cuts down on the quantity of light that can reach the plants that are submerged in the water or that are growing on the bottom of the pond. The sustainability of the habitat may suffer as a result of this, as it may impede the growth of a great number of native plants. LA II (WH ) HOA The short-term rental amendment was signed and filed with the county on April 23, 2023, and is now the 7th amendment to the CC&Rs. Stambaugh mailed a copy to all homeowners the first week of May so you should have your copy. If you have not completed your age verification paperwork, please do not hesitate. It is very important that we have this information on file to maintain our status as a 55+ community. We appreciate those who have filed and encourage those that haven’t to do so. (continued from p. 14) The ARC Reps who look at the request understand exactly what a homeowner wants, if there is a question the rep can make a call or stop by. Once the rep is satisfied, they then cast their vote. Once the Committee is satisfied with the request the ARC Chair may then cast the approval vote. After the approval vote is cast the homeowner may proceed within 48 hours to start the project. The formal meeting that has been called in the past doesn’t have to be called on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month and only called if a request is being denied. LA ( LW) HOA CORNER By Nancy Baker HOME RECONSTRUCTION Lake Ashton has had two homes destroyed by fire in the last several months. The HOA and ARC are actively working with the owners to reconstruct both homes. Fire is a very destructive element and the process of structural analysis to determine needed work to reconstruct the homes safely is very important and time consuming. Once all of the analysis is completed and all insurance issues are settled, the process of permitting begins. The current owners of both homes have committed to rebuilding these homes and you will be seeing construction activity on both properties in the next few weeks. Both projects are being treated as new construction sites with dumpsters, temporary storage and portable toilets allowed until the homes are weathered in. Please recognize that one of the homes was occupied by renters when the fires occurred. Fire safety is important for all and especially when you are renting your home to folks that may not be familiar with some of our specific hazards. If you rent your home, please review your insurance policy and your renter’s policy for completeness. MANAGEMENT COMPANY The HOA has given our current management company notice of contract termination as of June 30. 2023. We are returning to a self-managed community except for utilizing a professional accounting firm to manage the day to day financials. The new system has three components: data (property & owner) management, member engagement and financial management. We are working towards a smooth transition of data management and financial components by June 30. Native Flowers of Central Florida By Lynn Davis Tampa Verbena is an endangered short-lived perennial that lasts about three years. Though found mostly on the West Coast of Florida, Bok Tower is a great place to view these showy flowers. The flowers are clustered with a deep pink to lavender color. This variety can grow to two feet and spread about three to four feet. Plant in masses for a more dramatic effect. These flowers can be planted anytime between February and December. You’ll get a wonderful show in Spring through Summer. Remember to plant in full sun. As with most native plants, these flowers are maintenance-free once established. They tolerate sandy soil and dry conditions and are almost pest and disease free if not overwatered. You’ll be rewarded with beneficial visitors of butterflies, hummingbirds and bees. Make sure to ask the nursery or big box stores about buying a native species. There are many varieties of verbenas non-natives. Once the first portion has been fully implemented, we will begin to roll out the member engagement elements. More to come. COMPLIANCE The compliance committee is in the process of implementing new software to easily record issues that residents may have with non-compliance. The team is here to help our residents resolve any issues. DISASTER PREPAREDNES S TAX EXEMPT HOL IDAY A 14-day sales tax holiday runs through June 9 for disaster preparedness supplies. What about in your car or on your golf cart? Okay, maybe you don’t have to have one everywhere but it is recommended you have these in your home. The National Fire Safety Protection Association recommends you have a 2.5 pound ABC type extinguisher for small fires of common combustibles, flammable liquids/gases plus energized electrical equipment. They suggest a K type for kitchen cooking oils and fats too. Amazon and home supply stores have both general ABC and kitchen K extinguishers. Keep your extinguisher(s) within easy reach along evacuation routes from areas where fires are most likely. If you ever have to use your extinguisher, follow the PASS procedure: P = Pull the pin. HAUNTING II ON THE LAKE By Terri McDuff LAPAC is very excited to announce this years’ Halloween Fundraiser event, Haunting II On the Lake on October 28. This event will again be one of our best as it is featuring a Haunted House Maze inside of the Lake Ashton Clubhouse Ballroom! Yes, we have had a haunted house previously but nothing like the one we will have this year. Tickets will go on sale in early October: $15 for adults and $10 for children. The event will run from 4 to 9 pm with limited timeslots every half hour, allowing groups of no more than 35 people per time slot to move through the Ballroom safely while experiencing a little fear and adrenaline as well as getting tricked or given treats. We will also have a time slot dedicated specifically for those needing special accommodations. Be prepared to expect the unexpected to happen! Join in the fun by dressing up in your own costume as well! LAMGA By David Kubissa The month of May routinely kick starts a summertime exodus of golfers, but the numbers held up well in the first two weeks of LAMGA play with 72 players teeing off in a two-man best ball on May 3 that included a Mexican-style lunch themed around Cinco De Mayo. The following week, 52 players competed in a Beat the Board game. For those sticking around this summer, board President Rolly Geyer told those at the May 3 lunch that more special events were on the agenda through September, with some including a lunch or breakfast. She was a truly wonderful woman, with a very dry, subtle sense of humor, who loved to play cards. She will be missed. GARDEN CLUB By Lynn Davis The Lake Ashton Garden Club was fortunate to host Gene, the barefoot gardener, at the recent May meeting. Members and guests were taught what is the best potting material and care for different varieties of orchids. Gene provided opportunities for hands-on learning. The biggest lesson given was to not “baby” orchids. The club is fortunate to have Gene available as a tremendous resource. The “good for the order” news was presented. The Garden Club will not hold meetings in July or 28 place winners! The 2023 year s t a r t ed wi t h Senior League Billiard Players from the area, organized by Paul Guay of Lake Ashton, forming nine teams with five players on each team. Players were from Sebring, Lake Bonette, Lake Ashton, Swiss Village and Winter Haven. The teams were scheduled to play each Tuesday at different locations during January, February, and March, and to keep score of their billiard games. The final score was to see the Lake Ashton Team #2 become the First Place Winners of the 2023 Senior League Billiard Tournament, winning $680 for the team. LA SWIM CLUB By Sandy White As some of our community swimmers know there has been organized senior age group swimming competition in the USA since at least 1970. There are three main senior swim programs and all have regional meets, state championships, and nationals. They are: Senior Games, US Masters Swimming, & YMCA (which is affiliated with Masters Swimming). The LA Swim Club participates in the Florida Senior Games which is affiliated with the National Senior Games. Florida has 21 regional senior games around the state and Lake Ashton swimmers have participated in meets at Polk Co, Lee Co, Gainesville and Sanford. We have also had swimmers qualify for the state championships (held each December) by placing in the top 5, in an age group event, at a regional meet. This year we also have a swimmer who will be swimming in the Senior Nationals in Pittsburgh in July. 30 Our LA Swim Club offers 3 organized workouts each week for both fitness swimmers and for those who wish to use the Senior Games meets as a way to motivate themselves to keep fit. LA TRAVELERS By Laurie Clayton The Lake Ashton Travelers have had a busy Spring. In March they met in Perry Georgia at the FMCA Rally with others who came from around the country for the annual meeting. They put together three baskets to represent Florida which were auctioned off to raise money for homeless veterans. Along with baskets from other chapters, over $7,500 was raised. In April they traveled down to Marathon Key and stayed at the Jolly Roger RV Resort. Adventures included a visit to the Theater of the Sea where the animals were entertaining and dinner at the Island Fish Company. In May they visited Canopy Oaks for a new adventure! LA PICKLEBALL ASSOCIATION By Lisa Savala Pickleball “Open Play” is Monday - Friday 8 to 11 am for ALL players, not just LAPA members. When all courts are being utilized and at least 5 people are waiting to play, please use the “bucket” paddle system, which allows players to mix up players. When players come off of the court the “Winners” put their paddles in the back of the “W” bucket (behind the other paddles) and the “Losers - or 2nd place winners” put their paddles in the back of the “L” bucket (behind the other paddles). The clip should be moved to the other bucket once 4 paddles are removed from the front of the “W or L” bucket so that the next time four players come off of a court, 4 paddles are removed from the front of that bucket. As a courtesy, new players just arriving will put their paddle into the front of the bucket with the clip, so they will be the first to play once a court opens up again. LAPA had a Pickleball Mixer celebrating TAX DAY on April 15, with 32 members that came out to play and many others who came to help and support the players! Men’s first place winners were Earl Schley and Brian Schupp, second place John Savala and Bill Reibl. Women’s first place winners were Deb Louder and Cathy Liska, second place Terresa Caesar and Christy Negrin. Members should check their email for the next Pickleball event coming soon! 32

LA ROCKERS By Connie Strassberg LA Rockers will be spending the month of June painting rocks for our July 4th Fundraiser to be held in conjunction with the Independence Day Celebration at the Clubhouse. See page 23 for details on the sale. The administrators of LA Rockers want to wish all of our snowbirds a wonderful summer. We look forward to being together again in the fall. SINGLES CLUB By Maureen Ziegler LA Singles is a social group that plans activities for single residents. The group meets monthly on the first Sunday of the month at 2 pm in the Clubhouse Ballroom. In May, several new members were welcomed, and the group discussed future lunches, dinners, and other activities. Karen Nelson obtained a list of eight homeless seniors for the LA Singles Christmas in July outreach. Donations of money may be given, or gifts can be purchased from the list that Susan will distribute. If you choose to purchase a gift, please let Susan know. Carol Corley arranged for a dinner at The Ranch in Lake Wales in May. Winter Haven Theatre has announced the new season. A group of singles have season tickets for the first Sunday Matinee of each show. Single Mingle will be held on June 15. The location will be discussed at the June meeting. Volunteers will be needed to help set up and clean up. If you would like to take part in activities with other singles, attend the meeting on June 4. LAVA AUXILIARY By Chris Graves The LAVA Auxiliary will meet June 21 at 6:30 p.m. in the Ballroom near the stage. Come meet and greet special guest Dan Demarco from the Soldiers Freedom Outdoors – Equine Therapy. Dan will share how the Soldiers Freedom Outdoors Equine Therapy supports veterans and their families by providing equine camp experiences. The LAVA Auxiliary will present Dan a $3,000 check for this program from the Auxiliary. These funds are part of the proceeds made from last year’s Craft Fair. SAVE THE DATE! The Annual Craft Show will be October 21 in the Clubhouse Ballroom. At this time applications are being accepted for the Craft Show. Applications can be picked up at the Clubhouse Activities Office.
