By Fred Halde You did it again, Lake Ashton! When the call went out from Toys for Tots, you responded just like you always have. However, this time was different, in that you not only gave a mountain of toys, but you provided a treasure of cash, which enabled TFT to purchase special gifts which are requested. I was proud of our community to show up about every third day at the warehouse and say, “These are from Lake Ashton!” After a while, I didn’t have to say anything…they just knew. So thank you Lake Ashton for your generosity, from Toys for Tots, Rotary on the Ridge, myself and a whole lot of smiling children. You did it again!! Staff always encourages residents to become more involved in community activities designed to benefit the body, mind, and spirit and with the support of the many club, group, and organization facilitators this will be possible for everyone. Supervisors and staff would like to extend a special thank you to all the club, group, and organization facilitators. These are all volunteers that work very hard to ensure there is a robust activities schedule for all residents to enjoy. Lake Ashton is lucky to have a large number of residents willing to volunteer their time in one way or another for everyone to live their best retired life. Thank You The family of Ron McDonnell would like to thank all the friends and neighbors who were so kind and supportive during his illness, especially the Scalis, Pritchards, Geyers and Wagners. The visits, calls, texts and meals were very much appreciated and proved why Ron loved living in Lake Ashton so much. A celebration of his life will take place at the Eagles Nest on Sunday, February 4 at 3 pm.
JOINT AMENITY FACILITIES POLICY HIGHLIGHT Showcase Series By Brenda Jackson ALCOHOL: All persons must be at least twentyone (21) years of age to consume alcohol at any Amenity Facility, and must do so in a responsible manner. In regards to LACDD’s Clubhouse: When there is a liquor license holder registered with the State of Florida to serve alcoholic beverages at 4141 Ashton Club Drive, Lake Wales, Florida alcohol may not be brought into the Clubhouse, adjoining outdoor patio, or any other outdoor amenities at any time (the Pavilion is the only exemption with prior approval from the Amenity Manager) All alcoholic beverages must be purchased through the holder of the liquor license registered with the State of Florida.. Any registered holder of said liquor license shall be required to provide the Amenity Manager with an applicable certificate of insurance naming the District as an additional named insured. IF THERE ISN’T A LIQUOR LICENSE HOLDER AT THE CLUBHOUSE If there isn’t a liquor license holder registered with the State of Florida to serve alcoholic beverages at the Clubhouse, the Clubhouse Amenity Manager may approve consumption of alcohol for events held in the Clubhouse. Alcoholic beverage service, if approved, shall only be obtained through a service licensed to serve alcoholic beverages. Such service will be required to provide the Amenity Manager with a certificate of insurance, naming the District as an additional insured party. The Amenity Manager may approve alcohol to be brought in for personal consumption for community events. In regards to LA II CDD’s HFC Community Center: The HFC Community Center Amenity Manager may approve consumption of alcohol for events held at the Community Center by a vendor who is in possession of a valid liquor license and proof of insurance. See Section XI (vi) regarding the HFC Community Center herein for more specific information regarding alcohol at the HFC Community Center. 7 Meet Brittany White! Brittany lives in Lakeland with her children, Zayden (4) and Zynlee (2) who are the loves of her life. When not at Charm City you can find her at Walk On’s Sports Bar in Lakeland. What do you like most about working here in LA? “I would have to say the residents. I live in Lakeland and I wouldn’t drive this far if it weren’t for the residents and the connections I have made and continue to make. I look forward to every day to joke with the residents and making them smile.” What is the biggest challenge right now? “Getting the business to grow. Finding what works and what doesn’t to bring more residents in. The events we’ve held have been great and successful and we are happy with the resident response to them. But we still have room to grow.” What would you like the residents to know about you? “I started with Nik back in 2018 with his food truck business. While he has taught me a lot, the most crucial thing he has taught me is the importance of customer service. Customer service is what drives customers back to you every time. I strive to excel at my customer service. Mix it up in 2024 and try sitting at a new table at Monday Coffee or at one of the many social gatherings and events. The Community Social Potlucks are a great way to meet new people. Many new residents moved to Lake Ashton in 2023, so reach out to new faces and welcome new neighbors. The LACDD Board of Supervisors and staff were busy in 2023 with many projects completed including: • Pressure washing the curbing and pavers on Lake Ashton Blvd • Several pavement and curbing repairs throughout the community • Replacement of AED units • Refurbishment of the Card Room, Media Center, Bowling Alley, and Pool/Spa area • Replacement of the Restaurant Patio Awning • Installation of a handicap door opener at the Clubhouse east entrance • Installation of new gate arms and operators at the Thompson Nursery Road Entrance • Replaced the panic bar system at both sets of Lobby doors • Pressure washing and sealing of the bridges • Two new treadmills were purchased • Refurbishment of landscaping on Lake Ashton Blvd, the west parking lot, east pool entrance, and voting entrance • Lake Ashton shoreline stabilization behind the Clubhouse and pathway repairs • Bocce Ball Courts were refurbished Other smaller projects include replacement of water fountains, conversion of Shuffleboard lighting, painting, pressure washing, replacement of gutters and downspouts, and more. We are excited and ready to start the year with lots of exciting events! The Holiday Classic Cornhole Tournament of 2023 was held in December. As usual, the competition was fierce. The first place winner was Team Popcorn (Ted Harmon and Ervin Konrad, top right). Second place was secured by Team Shields X2 (Robbie and Tammy Shields, bottom right). The field of competitors was large, as this fun sport has gained much popularity here in Lake Ashton. 2023 was ushered out at the Health and Fitness Center with a gala New Year’s Eve Party featuring a 12-piece band. It was a sold-out event that was enjoyed by all! We are featuring new bands this year, starting with the Free Whiskey Band, appearing from 7 to 10 pm on January 12th. A Health Expo will be held at the HFC on January 26th, from 9 am to noon. Many vendors will be available to address your health care needs. Looking ahead to February, there will be a Sock Hop, on February 2nd, featuring the 57 Chrome Band, from 7 to 10 pm. This event will be a fundraiser for Alzheimer's Research. So dust off your saddle shoes and come on over to the HFC to support this important cause. A new entertainment offering of a Magic Show will take place on February 9 at 2 pm. Come on out and experience some magic and illusions at the HFC! The deadline for registration for the new gate access system Radio Frequency Identification tags (RFID) was December 29, 2023. However, if you did not have the opportunity to do so, you may still register at the HFC or Clubhouse. This program replaces the outdated clicker system and will enhance the security of our community. Again, we are excited to bring many more activities and programs to the HFC in 2024 that we are sure our residents will enjoy--hope to see you there! 10

LOOKS Central Native Plants of Florida By Lynn Davis The Native Florida ornamental shrub, wild coffee (Rubiaceae), isn’t the coffee you’d drink at WHAT IS THE "LITTORAL SHELF" AND WHAT MAKES IT SIGNIFICANT? The portion of the perimeter of a pond that slopes down is called the littoral area. It's also known as the shallow area close to Starbucks. It tastes musty. Some people have used the abundant seeds as a substitute for decaffeinated coffee. Beware! The plant is toxic to humans and pets. Approach brewing the seeds with caution. The shrub is mainly used as a specimen plant in borders, mass plantings or the main focus in your landscaping. The Wild Coffee shrub has shiny dark green leaves. It blooms a white showy cluster of flowers in Spring and Summer. The red fruits appear in late summer or early fall. Birds and other pollinators frequent this shrub. The shrub’s height is anywhere from 6-10ft. It spreads to 4 or 6 ft. Why plant wild coffee in your yard? This shrub is drought tolerant and prefers shade or partial shade. It strangely does not do well in full sun. You’ll love watching for birds, bees and other wildlife in your yard. Just don’t give up your favorite brew! Wild coffee can be found at any Native Plant Nursery. the shore. The littoral shelf looks like a small wetland when it is healthy. A lot of natural aquatic plants, like Bulrush, Pickerel Weed, and Duck Potato, do well in these places. The littoral shelf has many benefits, such as better water quality because it supports beneficial species that consume the nutrients that help algae and invasive aquatic weeds grow. The shelf also filters the water before it leaves the pond through a flow structure and helps to keep the shoreline in place, which reduces erosion. Behind Limerick Drive and behind Litchfield Loop, you can find littoral shelfs in Lake Ashton. More information will be posted and sent out as we draw closer to the date. common year-round resident of Lake Ashton, is one of the most ubiquitous of all the birds in North America, found even in Alaska. They are a welcome sight to any who have just moved to Florida. This is one of many birds where the name is an accurate descriptor. The bright red epaulets are obvious against a glossy ebony body. These are bordered below with yellow, but are often concealed when perched. This bold gregarious species is usually found perched in a marsh, but can also be seen ushering a Red-shouldered Hawk away from its nesting area. The Red-winged Blackbird's loud and familiar song "Kong-ka-ree" rings out as the males deftly show their bright red shoulder patches hoping attract a mate in spring. The females and young (right) often confuse observers because they look more like an oversized sparrow. They can be found in immense flocks in winter. Bring this coupon to redeem. 911 — remember, every second counts. There is an outdoor emergency phone near the East entrance gate of the Clubhouse, next to the large pool rules sign. This emergency phone can be used by anyone to contact 911 responders. The phone has a single push button, and an attendant will answer the call within 30 seconds to dispatch emergency responders. All dispatchers are CPR certified to assist with emergencies over the phone until help arrives. The emergency phone allows for automatic identification of the Lake Ashton Clubhouse address. There is also an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and first aid kit located next to the restrooms across from the Restaurant in the Clubhouse, in the HFC Community Center, in the Hallway near the HFC Fitness Center, as well as on both roving patrol carts. It is important to receive training on use of an AED in the event of an emergency. AED and CPR training is offered at various times throughout the year and all residents are encouraged to take advantage of this life-saving training without having to leave the community. The next training opportunity will be on February 13 at 11 am in the Clubhouse Ballroom. If you need help locating these lifesaving items, please ask a Clubhouse or HFC staff member. INCIDENTS AT THE AMENITIES IN CASE OF EMERGENCY No one plans on an emergency occurring while enjoying themselves at Lake Ashton, but should one happen, there are various emergency assistance items located throughout the Clubhouse and HFC that can help. The first step should always be to call 16 Any incident that occurs at the Clubhouse, HFC, or surrounding amenities should be reported to Security AFTER calling 911, if needed. Security is available 24 hours a day (see phone numbers on page 3). If reporting the incident at time of occurrence is not possible, please contact Sheila Moreland, 863-324-5457, as soon as you are able. It is important to document any incident, whether a substantial injury or a minor bruise. The process takes only about five minutes, and the information gathered is helpful in identifying potential areas that need attention.
WILDLIFE ALERT Alligators and crocodiles are an important part of Florida's heritage and play a valuable role in the ecosystems where they live. Even though the weather might be cooling down, those who live near lakes and ponds should still expect to see alligators from time to time. Remember - never feed or approach an alligator. If you encounter an aggressive alligator, call the Nuisance Alligator Hotline: 1-866-FWC-GATOR (392-4286). Alligators under 4 feet in length are not considered a threat to humans. As long as residents have a healthy respect for wildlife, including alligators, there are opportunities to live and let live. HOLIDAY GOLF CART PARADE By Carolyn Bishop The Holiday Golf Cart Parade was a big success once again this year. Over 30 golf carts, a few police cars, 5 clubs and organizations, and even a pontoon boat participated! Santa and Mrs. Claus and their two elves closed out the parade. Thank you to CERT and CAP for keeping us all safe and to the Parade committee for a great event. And let’s not forget the cookie donators that really showed up this year! CHRISTMAS DINNER DANCE WRAP-UP By Debby Landgrebe A GREAT time was had by all at the annual LA Christmas Dinner Dance December 1. The theme was A Nutcracker Christmas and the Ballroom was transformed into a beautifully decorated evening highlighted with handmade 7’3.5“ tall nutcrackers made by Lynn Shelton and Debby & Don Landgrebe. The blessing was given by Kay & Jim Weaver. Charm City Catering provided food, and B. Haven entertained with fabulous dancing music. The dance floor was full as many danced the night away. A Nutcracker Christmas Dinner Dance was a success! OVERFLOW PARKING ON THE BASKETBALL COURT The Basketball Court near the west parking by the Shuffleboard Courts is used as overflow parking for golf carts during special events. Signage will be placed at the entrance to the parking lot advising residents that there is additional golf cart parking on the Basketball Court. As always, residents are encouraged to car or cartpool to high capacity events at the amenities. When parking in the circular drive please find the urge to angle in and park with both tires touching the curb. HOW TO BE A GOOD AUDIENCE MEMBER AT SHOWS TURN OFF YOUR CELL PHONE Somehow the most obvious rule of good show etiquette is still the most often disregarded. Be present for the moment and turn your cell phone off or on silent. DON’T SEND TEXT MESSAGES DURING THE SHOW You may think you’re being incognito, but in a dark, the light from your cell phone screen is incredibly distracting to those around you. THERE IS NO PHOTOGRAPHY OR VIDEOING ALLOWED DURING PERFORMANCES This can be very distracting to the other people who are trying to watch the performance. Beyond that, it is distracting to the performers who are prepared to give you the best performance possible. Finally, it is illegal in many instances. The majority of most performance contracts strictly forbid the recording of a performance. It is possible you may be responsible for copyright infringement by recording a live production. DON’T BE THE MANNERS POLICE While it can be irritating when someone’s cell phone goes off during a show, what’s even worse is when the brief breach of etiquette is followed by a series of overreactions from other audience members. Annoyed “Tsks,” “Hmphs,” hisses, snarls, and shouts of “Turn it off!” along with glares can be just as distracting as the original disruption. DON’T TALK DURING THE SHOW A quick whisper to your neighbor, or an audible reaction to something interesting that happened on stage is fine, but keep conversations to after the show or during intermission. DON’T SING ALONG It’s tempting sometimes, we know, but it can be disturbing to those around you. There are a few exceptions to this rule, such as when the performers onstage actually prompt the audience to join in. DON’T FEEL LIKE YOU HAVE TO DRESS UP Although many residents usually dress up a bit, there is no dress code. TRY NOT TO FALL ASLEEP Your snoring may be taken as a protest of sorts, but generally it’s just disruptive to those around you. It’s also insulting to the hard-working performers up onstage. RESPECT THE SPACE AND COMFORT OF THOSE AROUND YOU Seating for the Entertainment Series can be tight, so sometimes a little elbow bumping can’t be helped. But you can practice good etiquette by taking care to not lean into your neighbor or intrude on other people’s already limited leg room.

Residents can sign up online or at the Clubhouse Activities Office to cook chili or donate baked goods, which should be individually wrapped for the dessert table. Tasting tickets must be purchased in advance at the Clubhouse Activities Office with a check payable to LA Purple Stars; 12 tickets for $10, limited to 200 strips of 12. Each ticket allows you to taste one chili. Corn bread, water, and baked goods are cash sales; $1/ item. BOLLA TO SPONSOR EXCITING EVENTS IN 2024 By Diane Dillon BOLLA will sponsor an exciting event with Leigh Ann Brown presenting Portrait of a Bride, An Evolving Silhouette, on January 27 from 1 to 4 pm in the Clubhouse Ballroom. Refreshments will be provided. Leigh Ann is a collector of wedding gowns, with over 300 in her collection. Her oldest gown is from 1872. Leigh Ann will bring 25-30 of her favorite gowns to Lake Ashton. She has different favorites every day! Not only does Leigh Ann describe the gowns, but she includes a brief history of the time-period in which they were worn, often discussing women’s issues of the day. Leigh Ann last brought her beautiful wedding gowns to Lake Ashton in 2020. Her show was a resounding success and is returning by popular demand. Tickets are $15 each and are available for purchase at the Clubhouse Activities Office and online. In February, the members of BOLLA will celebrate our 20th Anniversary! A special luncheon for members will be held in the clubhouse on February 27. Several surprises are in store, along with a mystery guest or two. This celebration is not to be missed! In the meantime, the members of BOLLA have been busy making and delivering blankets. In the last two months, over 260 blankets have been delivered to Guardian Ad Litem, Lake Wales Charter Schools Homeless, Youth for Christ, Snively Head Start, and the East Coast Migrant Project. I am so grateful to bring in this new year with you all; and hope we can continue on this health-conscious journey together. Before you take that first step towards any lasting change you should first evaluate where you are. So ask yourself the following questions: How do you feel most days? Are you always tired? Do you sleep well? Are you happy? Are you stressed? Are you getting proper nutrition? Most of us don’t realize the stress our body is under due to our daily lifestyle choices. We don’t exercise and wonder why we lack energy. We don’t get enough sleep, and wonder why we can’t remember or focus. We have poor eating habits, and wonder why we feel sluggish or can’t lose weight. Do you get at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity on most days? Do you drink enough water? Are you active? Do you limit sweets? Start this year by making a list of the good and bad aspects of your health. Then select one or more items from the bad list and decide what changes you will make to move it to the positive side. Be specific and be accountable. Start off slow, and gradually incorporate additional steps as you become comfortable with each new health initiative. Set realistic goals, and be prepared to compromise. It’s never an “all or nothing” deal. Make changes that are easier for you; like walking instead of biking or jogging. Reduce the time spent watching television; and when you do watch television, take advantage of the commercial breaks and do a few repetitions of exercise. The small steps will motivate you to do more. And the moment you realize you feel better, you look better, and you are a better representation of you – well, that’s the “Sweet Spot” we all crave!

The catered event was held at the HFC and a Silly White Elephant Gift Exchange was facilitated by Santa. As the evening came to a close, we presented Santa with a $1,600 donation to Toys for Tots. MEALS ON WHEELS FUNDRAISER RESULTS By Marcia Santino The Pinehurst Loop Social Committee (“PLSC”) held a LA Community Gift Basket Raffle benefitting Meals on Wheels of Polk County. This raffle was designed to raise awareness of this amazing organization in a fun and interactive way. A total of 32 incredible gifts, pictured, were donated by Pinehurst Loop residents, local businesses and The LA Stars. People across the community participated in the raffle over a two-week selling period and drawings were held on November 7th. Over $2,500 was raised for Meal on Wheels and the proceeds were presented to their Executive Director, Susan Eldridge, pictured with some of the PLSC members, on November 8th. If you or someone you know would like information on meal 38 Members of the Sew What and So Much More group weave on looms, crochet and knit all year anticipating giving warm hugs to children on our chilly Florida days. 614 hats and 102 scarves were delivered to 10 local elementary schools and placed under The Caring Tree. Patients at Advent Health Medical Center have received over 400 "bone shaped" pillows sewn by our group and distributed by a Lake Ashton resident , a Hospital Volunteer. On Thursday afternoons, from 1 to 3, the craft room at the HFC is abuzz with a variety of crafts including card making, diamond dot art, needlework, and crocheting around blankets for BOLLA as well as completing baby blankets and shawls. New members are welcome to enjoy the fellowship of fellow crafters. SINGLES CLUB By Maureen Ziegler There is a welcoming group in Lake Ashton especially for people who find themselves alone — either newly, or for a long time. LA Singles plans activities for those of us who enjoy doing things with other single residents. The club starts each month with a meeting at 2 pm on the first Sunday in the Clubhouse. Next meeting is January 7. We also get together most other Sundays at 2 pm for cards, and the third Thursday of each month at the Pavilion from 4 to 6 p.m., bringing snacks to share and what you would like to drink. The meeting for December was actually the second annual Garden Club Party. Members brought garden related items wrapped. The members had to pick their gift and sometimes watch it get “stolen” by another member, only to go and choose another one. Attendees had an opportunity to mingle and join in the fun watching who got what! Coffee, apple cider, donuts and muffins were served. Thanks to Deb Crosby for the holiday music. CAMERA CLUB By Larry Hillock The holidays are over and it’s time to slow down and enjoy the cooler weather. At the January 8th meeting we will have the pleasure of hearing a presentation by camera club friend Reinier Munguia. Reinier is an accomplished photographer and informative speaker. LA WOODWORKERS CLUB ANNUAL MEETING By Jim Sullivan The Lake Ashton Woodworkers will have their annual membership meeting on January 15 at 10:30 am in the front of the Ballroom. New Memberships and renewals are being offered at this meeting. Membership to the Lake Ashton Woodworkers is available to all Lakes Ashton residents. For all new residents, the woodworkers shop here at Lake Ashton is first class, with the finest equipment. With your new membership you will receive a complete training session to ensure your safety and ability to use the equipment. At times during the year, classes are offered to help you create woodworking projects. The Lake Ashton Woodworkers club is completely self-supported. The annual dues are $150 per year. That is a lot more than past years, however we had a substantial increase in the monthly rent. We are looking forward to another great year of making sawdust and enjoying the woodworking club here at Lake Ashton.

It was a fun filled year with lots of open play and several special events including Pickleball Mixers to celebrate Tax Day, the 4th of July and Halloween, as well as a Memorial Day Social. Several “Newbie Clinics” led were held by Coach Dennis Santino. These clinics are a great way to learn the game or just check it out to see if you are interested in playing. This is one of several projects that the Auxiliary members do that can be done from home 42 and at no cost to an individual due to the fund raising that is done throughout the year. LA ROCKERS By Annie Lutz LA Rockers is a wonderful group of residents that spreads acts of kindness to our LA Community. You never know how a small painted rock can change someone’s day, outlook, or even their life. We recently completed 2 service projects for the holidays. For the LA Singles group holiday project we painted rocks that matched a pair of fuzzy socks. For Water’s Edge we delivered 150 rocks to be handed out to their residents. The staff told us how much the rocks spread holiday cheer. We’ve also been busy painting and hiding rocks throughout Lake Ashton to share smiles one rock at a time! The Rockers meet in the HFC from 2 to 4 pm on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month. The 1st Wednesday is for current members to learn new skills and techniques. The 3rd Wednesday is a “Free Paint” session where newcomers are welcome to join the group. Newcomers will be lent the supplies they need for their first session but must contact MJ Richards (mjmrichards517@gmail.com) at least five days before the first meeting so supplies can be provided. ITALIAN/AMERICAN CLUB By Susie Escoda All of you with Italian heritage are welcome to join us on Tuesday, January 23 at 6 pm at the HFC for our monthly potluck. The cost is $1 each to cover expenses. Please bring a dish to share (desserts are taken care of) and a beverage of your choice. Mark your calendars for February 15, March 21 and April 18 for future potlucks. The annual dance will be held March 1 at the HFC from 7 to 10 pm. The terrific Happy Days band will be back. Tickets are $10. This is a BYOB event and bring snacks for your table. MID-ATLANTIC PARTY By David Harrison It's time to have fun again at the Mid Atlantic Party on Sunday, February 4, 2024 at 5 pm in the HFC Community Center. Anyone who has ever lived or worked in Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania or New Jersey is invited. The menu consists of fried chicken, homemade crab cake and a soft drink for $20 or you can BYOB. Tickets go on sale Tuesday, January 2 at the HFC Activities Desk with a check payable to Mid-Atlantic Party. Choose white or dark meat chicken when you sign up. Please bring a salad, side or dessert to serve eight and a serving utensil. Tickets will be sold until January 26 or 120 are sold. GOLF LALGA By Dawn Neigh The New Year has begun with many upcoming events for the LALGA. Our Solheim Cup is planned for January 15th and 16th. The always fun pairing party will be on January 9th. Mark your calendars! Will it be Go Red! Or Go Blue!? Our East West Tournament will be held January 30th. Last year’s inaugural event was a great success with the East claiming bragging rights. Will the East do it again or will the West be victorious? Watch for more information and sign up according to your side of Lake Ashton. Our Member/Member tournament is in February with “18 Shades of Green”! Start planning with your partner for a challenging and fun two days! Our Red Hoagland challenge continues to be a tight race. Liz Leigh is in the lead by $30. However, second through fourth are only $10 apart with Dori Krogman, Dixie Kite, and Bev Hines. And speaking of Bev Hines, a huge thank you to Bev for taking on the role of the LALGA Publicity chair. Annuities and Market Risk: What You Need to Know • Market risk is something all investors worry about, but those close to retirement have limited time to recover from the loss. If you’re within ten years of retirement, your investments are at a critical stage to continue to gain value and avoid loss. Without thinking through the dynamics of gains and losses, investors leave themselves open to market risk that could prematurely deplete their retirement assets. One way that investors avoid loss is by including annuities in their retirement portfolio. Annuities, which are becoming more widely used in the financial services industry, are a contract with an insurance company to provide investors with a guaranteed stream of income in retirement. They offer tax-deferred growth of earnings similar to other traditional tax-deferred investments. However, many investors still don’t fully understand the different types of annuities, how they work, or the fees associated with them. The three types of annuities widely used in financial planning are fixed annuities, fixedindexed annuities, and variable annuities. Like any financial product, there are pros and cons to each type of annuity, and due diligence of investigating any annuity should take precedence before purchasing one for your retirement portfolio: Fixed Annuity Pros: • Provides a fixed rate of return the insurance company generates from investing in high-quality corporate and government bonds. • Grow on a tax-deferred basis. • • The interest rate is typically guaranteed the first ten years of the contract, and a guaranteed minimum interest rate sets after the initial guarantee period to protect against declining interest rates. Provides a guaranteed lifetime income and protection against longevity risk; annuity payments continue the rest of your life. The Cons: • When the guaranteed rate expires, the rate is adjusted based on the earnings in the insurer’s investment account. If this occurs during a lowinterest rate or unfavorable stock market environment, a lower rate of return may apply. • Can have high surrender rates from one to fifteen years and withdraws over ten percent during the surrender period incur fees. Fixed-Indexed Annuity Pros: • Your principal is protected during a down market, and you won’t lose your initial investment or accumulation. • Grow on a tax-deferred basis. Contact me today! The Cons: • • • Are expensive and come with many fees and charges, which decreases the accumulation. Are market sensitive and may incur a loss to the investor. Both the salesperson and the investor often misunderstand this complex product. Annuities offer many benefits to investors and have their place in retirement planning, but only if suitable for the investor and a part of an investment strategy using other types of investments and accounts. Investors should fully understand the risks associated with annuities before purchasing them. If you have any questions about annuities, now is a great time to visit. The curtain came down on the 2023 LAMGA season in December with an important year-end meeting and preparations for the 2024 season. The December 6 annual meeting and luncheon brought together members for a two-nets team game followed by the meeting where league president Rolly Geyer announced results for the three board seats up for election. The three incumbents running – Larry Wilson, Tim Wayt and Jacques Fleischmann – were re-elected to twoyear terms. The other three seats on the board will be up for a member vote in November 2024. The meeting also shined a spotlight on the four golfers who finished atop the leaderboard of the Red Hoagland Hyundai Challenge: 1. John Milsom; 2. Doug Hines; 3. Paul Panone; and 4. Rolly Geyer. They received golf shop gift certificates for their scoring during the weekly LAMGA games in 2023. Looking ahead to next season, treasurer Dan Baun urged members to submit their enrollment applications and fees in by December 31 so they can take part in the Kickoff LAMGA game on January 3. The game that week – pick your partner – includes another luncheon at the Eagle’s Nest. The kickoff event also means that the annual MemberGuest tournament is not far behind. Dates for the league’s signature event of the year are March 7, 8 and 9. Registration takes place this month, and the first 54 teams to sign up and pay their entry fee will have a spot in the highly popular tournament.
