They are a welcome sight to any who have just moved to Florida. This is one of many birds where the name is an accurate descriptor. The bright red epaulets are obvious against a glossy ebony body. These are bordered below with yellow, but are often concealed when perched. This bold gregarious species is usually found perched in a marsh, but can also be seen ushering a Red-shouldered Hawk away from its nesting area. The Red-winged Blackbird's loud and familiar song "Kong-ka-ree" rings out as the males deftly show their bright red shoulder patches hoping attract a mate in spring. The females and young (right) often confuse observers because they look more like an oversized sparrow. They can be found in immense flocks in winter.
