January is a great time for reflection and anticipation — reflection of the year that has passed and anticipation of the year to come. Residents are urged to become more involved in community activities designed to benefit the body, mind, and spirit. Plan to spend time at the amenities enjoying all that Florida’s peak season brings. Starting the week at Lake Ashton’s Monday Coffee information meetings will provide a good overview of upcoming classes, shows, meetings, and parties. Mix it up in 2023 and try sitting at a new table at Monday Coffee! Hundreds of new residents moved to Lake Ashton in 2022, so reach out to new faces and welcome new neighbors. In December, elected Supervisors Mike Costello, Debby Landgrebe, and Brenda Van Sickle took their oath of office and residents said farewell to Supervisor Bob Plummer. Looking forward in anticipation to 2023, residents will find an abundant schedule of activities at the Clubhouse and Health and Fitness Center to accommodate the active lifestyle to which residents are accustomed. Please keep staff at the Clubhouse or HFC informed with any feedback or questions regarding any concerns about the respective amenities and resident services to ensure that 2023 is the best year yet at Lake Ashton. Supervisors met on December 19 to review additional information provided by the Restuarant proposers. Supervisors ultimately decided to enter into lease negotiations with Charm City. A wrap up report of actions taken at this meeting was sent out on December 19 via email blast. Residents are encouraged t o attend CDD meetings to stay up to date regarding issues that effect the entire community. This is a very busy time of the year for most…a happy time with family, friends and lots of fun things to do for many. However, others may be struggling with the “first” holiday season alone or yet another without a loved one, so please be kind to everyone and take the time to listen to your neighbors. The next LA II Board of Supervisors meeting will follow the Budget Planning Workshop scheduled for Tuesday, January 10th. The workshop begins at 9 AM and the regular meeting will follow. The next Joint Boards of Directors meeting will take place at the HFC on Friday January 20th. At the last Joint meeting, the review of the Joint Amenities Policies was discussed, and Christine and I are both awaiting final approval so that we can move forward with the new policies for 2023. The HFC welcomes new participants into the Fitness Classes if you’ve made a resolution to get more fit in 2023. If you don’t know which class to start with, stop over, speak to one of the instructors or staff, or audit one to see if it’s a good fit. All LA II CDD sponsored classes are free of charge to residents Monday thru Friday AMs. Of course, we welcome back residents who have already taken the plunge! There will also be a DJ Dance on lucky Friday, January 13th. No negative vibes allowed, only fun and dancing! The Annual Fitness Expo will be on Friday, January 27th with many vendors offering products, services, and freebies for all who attend. The timeframe will be from 8 AM until noon for this event. Door prizes are of quality and plentiful as well. It’s been a busy year for the Lake Ashton II CDD. Many issues have been implemented, resolved, replaced, or fixed. I’d like to thank the LA II CDD Board, volunteers, and my staff for their teamwork throughout the year. Christine and her staff, and the LA I CDD Board have also been great to work with. Also, a huge thanks of course to the many residents at Lake Ashton who make coming to work a pleasure! As I end 2022, I have a rumor to clear up. As of the end of February, I will be retiring and moving to South Carolina. Family is important to us, so we have made the decision to move closer to them. We may however, become snowbirds after a year or so. Please know that I have enjoyed my work here at Lake Ashton since early 2006 immensely and will think back fondly to many, many fun times. I wish only the best for everyone here. 10

I have taken 5 BIG loads of toys to the central collection warehouse and I know I have two more on the way before the box is put away for another year. Lake Ashton has come through again with its outreach and compassion. Smiles will be showing up all over the area because of your generous support. CARING TREE By Larry & Joanne Hillock The staff at the Lake Wales Care Center asked us to pass on their gratitude to the "awesome" Lake Ashton residents for all of your generous donations. A special thank you to BOLLA, the Sew What Group and the ladies golf leagues for their over the top contributions. I'm here again this year tapping your GENEROSITY! I have a grandson graduating from college in May. And I often think of all the support he has had from family and friends in achieving this goal. Where would he be if he had NO family or friend support? In Polk County there again are well over a hundred students who want to go to college. But sadly they have no family and the state ends their support when they graduate from high school. This is how you can help. Monetary donations in any amount small or large. Gift cards in the amount of $5, $10 or $15, from restaurants or stores. Items such as sheets, personal items (tooth paste, shampoo, deodorant)for a duffel bag for the summer. We also hope to award some scholarships as we have done in the past. Last year we had enough donations for five. LA BLACK HERITAGE CLUB By Norman Wilderson Although small in numbers, the Lake Ashton Black Heritage Club is big in community support. The club members continued to support community charitable organizations with monetary support and voluntary service. Members presented a check of $400 to the Lake Wales Care Center along with donating clothing and household goods. The Club made a $500 donation to the Polk County Public Schools in support of its Hearth Project (Homeless Education Advocates Restoring The Hope). The Club in the past years has provided both monetary and school supplies to the Chain of Lakes Elementary School, the John Snively Elementary School, and the Hearth Project. Wildlife Corner Photo & Article By Barbara Ann Comer Native Flowers of Central The catbird is an abundant "snow bird" in Florida including Lake Ashton. This bird is similar in size and shape to its close relative the Northern Mockingbird. However, unlike the Mockingbird, the Catbird is shy and not likely to sit at the highest point in your backyard drawing attention to itself. Appropriately named, its call sounds like a cat! They are dark gray with a black cap and a little russet under the tail which is frequently cocked. Invite them into your yard by planting an American Beauty Berry Bush. Multiple Catbirds will visit your yard especially at dawn and dusk to devour the magenta berries until none remain. gr ay NUISANCE PLANT HIGHLIGHT: TORPEDOGRASS Torpedograss first appeared in the United States in the early 1800s. It was planted as a forage grass for cattle and livestock, but it quickly b e c a m e o u t o f control, spreading i n t o wa t e r wa y s . Torpedograss is a type of invasive grass that grows quickly and widely in bodies o f wa t e r. I f no t treated immediately, 14 Florida By Lynn Davis A must have for any gardener wanting to plant an excellent pollinator for the 3 B’s: butterflies, bees and birds, gaillardia pulchella is known most commonly as the blanket flower. This daisylike flower can grow to the height of 12 to 18 inches and easily spreads. It has a long blooming season here in Central Florida. It’s red or yellow petals are best from mid-spring to late summer but, may bloom anytime thereafter. Dividing this plant will encourage it to become fuller and last longer. Though it tolerates some shade, blanket flowers thrive best in full sun. Gaillardias sold at many retail outlets usually are non-native. Why plant Gaillardia in your yard? As with most native plants, Gaillardias are very easy to maintain. It tolerates sandy soil and dry conditions. It is almost pest and disease free. You’ll also find that it’s a winner in hard to grow spots. Make sure to plant where it can easily spread for the best “wow” factor. You’ll be rewarded with beneficial visitors of butterflies, bees and birds because of its excellent nectar. Torpedograss can be difficult to eradicate. In order to keep Lake Ashton's waterways free of this invasive grass, Lake Ashton staff and our aquatics vendor conduct on-site tours of each pond and ensure there is a treatment plan in place.

SAFETY CAP By Mike Weissberg Citizens Assisted Patrol (CAP) is always looking for more volunteers to patrol the streets once a week for two hours. NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH By Fay Wood, NW Chief Good Home Safety - Light Timers (Courtesy of Law Enforcement) Lighting is an effective tool to show your residence is occupied. A home that is dark, especially at night sends a message that there’s nobody home. Timers can be as simple or elaborate as you like. The wide range of units can offer everything from single to multiple day programming with varying times for operation. Pick a timer that you are comfortable with and install in multiple locations. Varying the times enhances the appearance of a home being occupied and easier in and outs for homeowners and visitors. Other tips include: • Use timers on lights, radios and even television sets • Use near windows, but be sure to have the window coverings closed. • Use timers on exterior lights especially near the property front • Use timers even for shorter periods of time. Should you be late coming home, your lights will indicate that someone is home and you’ll feel better walking into your home with lights on. • Shop around for the very long lasting LED light bulbs! Each ticket allows you to taste one chili, so you should buy 24 tickets to taste all of them. Cornbread, bottled water and desserts are cash sales, $1/item. SILENT DISCO FEBRUARY 28 Lake Ashton has had its fair share of Disco parties, but never a Silent Disco! This is typical party … with no speakers or amps. Attendees don wireless headphones and turn them to various stations, then boogie on the dance floor amidst others dancing to whatever’s playing on their headphones. If you don’t like a song, simply switch your headphones from one station to the next to keep the party going. Party-goers can turn down the volume of their headphones or take them off whenever they want to chat with others. Since there are no blaring speakers, it’s way easier to have conversations and meet new people! Your $12 ticket price will cover the entertainment, snack bar, and non-alcoholic beverages. Be present for the moment and turn your cell phone off or on silent. DON’T SEND TEXT MESSAGES DURING THE SHOW You may think you’re being incognito, but in a dark, the light from your cell phone screen is incredibly distracting to those around you. THERE IS NO PHOTOGRAPHY OR VIDEOING ALLOWED DURING PERFORMANCES This can be very distracting to the other people who are trying to watch the performance. Beyond that, it is distracting to the performers who are prepared to give you the best performance possible. Finally, it is illegal in many instances. The majority of most performance contracts strictly forbid the recording of a performance. It is possible you may be responsible for copyright infringement by recording a live production. DON’T BE THE MANNERS POLICE While it can be irritating when someone’s cell phone goes off during a show, what’s even worse is when the brief breach of etiquette is followed by a series of overreactions from other audience members. Annoyed “Tsks,” “Hmphs,” hisses, snarls, and shouts of “Turn it off!” along with glares can be just as distracting as the original disruption. DON’T TALK DURING THE SHOW A quick whisper to your neighbor, or an audible reaction to something interesting that happened on stage is fine, but keep conversations to after the show or during intermission. DON’T SING ALONG It’s tempting sometimes, we know, but it can be disturbing to those around you. There are a few exceptions to this rule, such as when the performers onstage actually prompt the audience to join in. DON’T FEEL LIKE YOU HAVE TO DRESS UP Although many residents usually dress up a bit, there is no dress code. TRY NOT TO FALL ASLEEP Your snoring may be taken as a protest of sorts, but generally it’s just disruptive to those around you. It’s also insulting to the hard-working performers up onstage. RESPECT THE SPACE AND COMFORT OF THOSE AROUND YOU Seating for the Entertainment Series can be tight, so sometimes a little elbow bumping can’t be helped. But you can practice good etiquette by taking care to not lean into your neighbor or intrude on other people’s already limited leg room.

CLUBS JUST FOR FUN BOCCE BALL By Darlene Henry Meet on Thursdays from 10 am to noon at the Bocce ball courts located behind the Clubhouse. Bocce ball is a bit like bowling, except the balls are much smaller and easier to use. This new group is for beginners and folks who just want to play for fun and meet others. You can visit and just watch, or learn the simple rules of the game. There can be a team of two, or a team of four. Basically, you roll the ball toward the target (a small white ball) and try to get as close as you can. Your opponents try to get closer than you. SWIM CLUB By Sandy White LA Swim Club members Cathy Liska, Sandy Papineau, and Sharon Swanson swam in the 31st Florida Senior Games Championships on December 3 and 4, as part of a group of 114 senior swimmers from all over Florida and several other states. These three swimmers competed in 13 events and won two silver, three bronzes, two 4ths, four 5ths, and two 7ths. They, the coach, and their groupies were excited by the excellent finishes, especially since some were their personal best times! The Florida Senior Games are held every year during the first week of December. For the next two years, it will be held in Temple Terrace, FL, which is about an hour west of Lake Ashton. To participate in the state championships one must place in the top 5 of an event at one of the regional meets during the year. There are 20 regional meets in different communities around the state, mostly in the spring and fall. In addition to the state champs meet, LASC has been going as a team to several regional meets each year. The state championships also serve as a qualifier for the 2023 National Senior Games, which will be held next July in Pittsburgh, Pa. In order to participate in the National Games, which is held every other year and rotates around the country, one must meet a qualifying time at the state meet. The goal of all levels of the Senior Games is to provide fun, fellowship, fitness, and fun competition for Florida’s seniors. The focus of the Senior Games is not winning but participating and meeting other senior swimmers. The swimmers, ages 50+, are a mix of abilities and are divided by gender and 10 age groups. The LA Swim Club is open to all swimmers, and multilevel workouts offer an opportunity for fitness, camaraderie, and stroke improvement for all levels of swimming experience. Come join on Mondays from 6 to 7 pm, Wednesdays from 1:45 to 2:45 pm, and/or Saturdays from 10 to 11 am at the Indoor Pool at the HFC. LASC always welcomes new members. The Single Mingle held on the third Thursday of the month will be held in the Pavilion. Gifts were collected for the Christmas gifts for 12 Senior Orphans. Anderson about his book ESCAPE FROM UKRAINE: One Man’s Journey to the Black Sea. Mr. Anderson wrote Escape from Ukraine to protest the 2014 invasion of Eastern Ukraine and Crimea. Completed in 2020, it was updated and republished after the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. After graduating from Bucknell University with a B.A. in History, Mr. Anderson flew fighter/attack aircraft from the U.S.S. Ranger. As a Naval Reservist, his NATO deployments in the 1980s along the Iron Curtain furthered his understanding of the vulnerability of free border countries. Anderson lives in Annapolis, Maryland, and as a seasonal visitor to the Keys, he is a member of the Key West Writer's Guild. CAMERA CLUB By Larry Hillock As the New Year begins, there is a new experience for the members. An off site meeting will be held at the Lake Region Audubon Center (115 Lameraux Road, Winter Haven) on January 9 at 10 am. The president of the Lake Region Audubon Center and good friend of the Camera Club Reinier Munguia will present a program on photographing reptiles and amphibians. GARDEN CLUB By Lynn Davis The Lake Ashton Garden Club met December 14 and the results of a recent survey were presented. In order to accommodate more residents, the survey offered an opportunity to suggest the best days and times for future meetings. Since there was a tie, the club members in attendance agreed to hold meetings on the second Thursday of each month January through April and on Wednesdays May through December. Tentatively planned for upcoming meetings are: garden tours in January and March. Gene, the Barefoot Gardener, also spoke on how to help struggling poinsettias in February. After the meeting the group had a fun time with a gift exchanged known as “Dirty Santa” (renamed Garden Troll Santa). New and existing members ate cookies and enjoyed apple cider, coffee, tea or hot cocoa.The next Garden Club meeting is tentatively scheduled for January 12 at 10am. There will be meeting prior to heading over to a Lake Ashton’s residence for a garden tour. Here is an opportunity to learn more about the use of succulents with success in landscaping. LAVA AUXILIARY By Chris Graves LAVA AUXILIARY MEETING: All residents are invited to attend the January 18 LAVA Auxiliary Meeting at 6:30 pm near the Clubhouse stage. This is a group of residents that support our military and have fun doing so. A few things that the group does: CRAFT SHOW: The October Craft Show was a tremendous success. A total of $6000 was raised for two veterans charities; $3000 was donated to the Canine Group and $3000 was donated to the Equestrienne Group. Both of these charities work with the veterans. CRAFT SHOW 2023 APPLICATIONS are now being accepted for the October 2023 Craft Show. Applications should be picked up from Sheila at the Clubhouse. Once the event is sold out for crafters, you will be placed on a wait list. MR. LAKE ASHTON – SAVE THE DATE – APRIL 15: This event is a crowd pleaser and has been sold out in the past. LA ROCKERS By Connie Strassberg The mission of the LA Rockers is: One message at just the right moment can change someone's entire day, outlook, and life. In addition, Rockers have donated rocks to be used for fundraisers by various charities (the latest being for Breast Cancer Awareness) and to local Nursing Homes. LA Rockers general ly meet every other Wednesday in the HFC Ballroom from 2 to 4 pm where over the year members new and old, have stepped up to share their talents with the group. An LA Rocker meeting is a place to come and have fun. New participants are welcome. You don't need to know how to draw or paint — all you need is the desire to have a good time and make others happy. At meetings, everyone paints, schmoozes and laughs with Rocker friends. And newcomers will be lent the supplies you need for your first meeting. MIND&BODY CLASSICAL MUSIC APPRECIATION / MUS IC HISTORY SERIES The classical music history program continues Mondays at 3 pm in the Clubhouse Cinema starting January 2. The look at Baroque composer Johann Sebastian Bach concludes and then will explore the music of Classical Era composer Joseph Haydn later in the month. LA resident Ken Hoffman explains the music and the historical events that influenced the composers of the eras. CAREGIVERS SUPPORT An all-encompassing Caregiver Support Group facilitated by the Alzheimer's Association will be held on January 10 at 11 am in the Clubhouse Conference Room. This group is for Caregivers and Care partners of people living with Alzheimer's, Dementia, Parkinson’s, ALS, Cancer, and Diabetes. People who are living with the disease are welcome to attend with their care partner. Sessions are January 20, February 10, and March 10 from 9 am - 3 pm in the HFC with a break for a sack lunch. Those attending should arrive at least 15 minutes prior to class start time to allow time for prep work before class begins. Students will create two watercolor paintings per session. Price per session is $50. All new students should contact the artist at 864-307-1244. A sign-up sheet will be at the HFC Activities Desk. WINE GLASS PAINTING Create a beautiful custom wine glass, hand-painted by you! For $35, each painter will receive step-bystep instructions to create two permanent, washable, and beautifully decorated wine glasses. The instructor will supply each painter with two wine glasses and all paints and brushes needed on February 10 at 3 pm in the Clubhouse Ballroom. Stop by the Activities Office with a check made out to Sheila Vertoli to reserve your spot. CREATE A CARD Please join the group on January 17 to create your own lovely greeting cards. A guest expert will provide instruction, from beginner to expert, all supplies and equipment, and three beautiful cards to take home. No experience needed.
