Sometimes it’s a bit of a stretch to foresee life in a month and a half, and sometimes it’s fun to imagine where we’ll be in our next season. Today, it’s August 20th. I’m at an Airbnb between Ocean Shores and Seabrook, taking a couple of days of last-minute, end-of-summer, family time. The ocean is so COLD, but it smells so good. And we’ve brought our dog with us. He’s a chihuahua, pomeranian, shiz tzu - a tiny thing who is having his own adventure, but, the weather is in the 60’s, and it’s making me think about Fall. Pumpkin spice, sweaters, Halloween - and my son’s birthday. He will be 14 this October. I guess I’m ready. This month, we’re featuring Team Survivor Northwest. When they reached out to me about a feature, I wasn’t aware of the organization But after looking at their website, I realized that I knew two of the folks on their team - women I had known in my previous career who I always enjoyed being around. They brought so much joy and goodness to my world. I knew that they would be an excellent feature - and a great one to talk about in October with (Breast) Cancer Awareness. And with that being said, welcome to our newest business partner. DRINK LIKE A LOCAL The Bitter Spritz COCKTAIL RECIPE BY THE COALMAN PHOTOS BY WILL FOSTER INGREDIENTS • 1.5 oz of your Preferred Bitter (Aperol, Gran Classico, Cappelletti, Campari, or a mix!) • 3 oz Sparkling Wine • 3 oz Soda water (we like Topo Chico for its aggressive carbonation!) • Orange Peel By day, we're a coffee shop serving authentic Italian-style espresso and tasty breakfast bites. At night, we transform into a neighborhood wine and cocktail bar with creative takes on your culinary favorites. 6977 Coal Creek Pkwy SE, Newcastle, WA TheCoalmanCafeAndBar.com 10 October 2023 INSTRUCTIONS 1. Add ice to a large wine glass and pour in all the ingredients. Give it a little swirl and express the oils from the orange peel by squeezing it from its sides. Enjoy! 2. Often enjoyed neat or in classic cocktails like the Negroni and Boulevardier, Italian bitters are a beloved and distinctive category of spirits that encapsulate the essence of Italian drinking culture, particularly the “aperitivo hour.” Initially developed as a medicine, these complex and aromatic herbal liqueurs are renowned for their balance of bitter and sweet flavors and gained popularity in the 1800’s where they were appreciated for their balanced flavors and low alcohol. Eventually people would begin to mix them with Prosecco and the spritz was born! We love the idea of keeping an Aperol Spritz handy at all times, which is why we’ve put ours on tap at The Coalman! A spritz is truly the drink to drink when you’re having two!
MEET YOUR NEIGHBORS Newcastle resident Jo Gartenberg at the annual fitness retreat. TEAM SURVIVOR NORTHWEST EMPOWERING WOMEN IN NEWC A S TLE AND THE GREA TER SEA TTLE AREA BY JESSICA IVINS COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER, TEAM SURVIVOR NORTHWEST W 12 October 2023 hen you hear the word cancer, you may think of chemo, radiation, surgery, and hardship. But at Team Survivor Northwest, cancer means climbing mountains, weekly hiking and walking groups, sweating it out in fitness classes, paddling in Dragon Boat races, and training for triathlons. Team Survivor is a local nonprofit organization that provides free health, fitness, and wellness programs to women who have had a cancer diagnosis. Whether in active treatment, remission, or facing a new diagnosis, these women reclaim their power by moving their bodies and healing their hearts together. “The comment that I hear the most from our members is how they never realized a cancer group could be such a positive place. They love being around others who get what they are going through without having to explain anything, without others feeling pity toward them, and often without even having to talk about cancer unless it comes up naturally in conversation,” says Executive Director Jennefer Boyer. “They can be themselves.” These words ring true for member and Newcastle resident Amy Robertson, who was diagnosed with stage-3 breast cancer in April 2020 – two weeks into the COVID-19 lockdown.
TWO NEWC A S TLE WOMEN, AMY R OBER T SON AND JO GAR TENBER G, FIND S TRENG TH AND EMPOWERMENT IN THEIR C ANCER DIA GNO SIS THR OUGH TEAM SUR VIV OR NOR THWE S T . “I felt like I had cancer behind closed doors because of COVID,” Robertson says. In addition to chemo, radiation, and a mastectomy, Robertson also developed heart failure. A former collegiate athlete, she felt beaten down by her inability to walk without fatigue. That’s when her oncologist encouraged her to join Team Survivor, which was hosting online fitness classes in the wake of the pandemic. 1 / Newcastle resident Amy Robertson hiking this summer. 2 / Executive Director Jennefer Boyer 3 / Jo Gartenberg, Newcastle resident and TSNW Board Member “The first class I took was so hard, but Toshiko (the instructor) was so supportive and kind. Heart failure made it difficult to do anything, but I kept going and continued to get stronger,” Robertson says. “I thought it would be sign on, exercise, and leave, but it’s so much more than that. As I got more involved in more exercise classes I felt better. I realized I wasn’t alone.” Newcastle resident Jo Gartenberg is not only a member of Team Survivor, but she also serves on the Board of Directors. After her breast cancer diagnosis in 2017, she began taking fitness classes, and ultimately summitted Mount Adams with the Team Survivor Mountain Climbing Program. Gartenberg says she believes it is the strength and resolve of Team Survivor’s membership that makes the organization so empowering. “Everyone has the same goal of wanting to be healthy and to feel like this disease didn’t define them. Team 1 2 3 Triathalon Training with Team Survivor
Hiking with Team Survivor Survivor is a way of taking back control,” she says. “There is always someone who can support you and help you out.” Team Survivor Northwest’s mission is backed by research – there is an undeniable link that shows exercise during and after cancer treatment decreases mortality rates (in some cases by as much as 40 to 60 percent). “In addition to the increased survival rates, we see other benefits from exercise including more effective treatment, decreased pain and side effects, better sleep, improved mental health and so much more,” Boyer says. 14 October 2023 For Robertson, that life-changing power of exercise truly helped her regain her sense of self. She now participates in Team Survivor’s new Water Aerobics class in person, where she has been able to do things with her body in the water that she couldn’t have dreamed of when she started her journey. “I felt like I lost myself somewhere, but then I found myself again right where I left it. I’m different, but better,” she says. “The members and instructors accept you and celebrate you just as you are.” There is something for everyone at Team Survivor. Outdoor programs include dragon boating, midweek hiking, walking, cycling, triathlon training, mountain climbing (this year’s groups conquered Ruth Mountain and the Chain Lakes Loop), and even snowshoeing! Move to Heal fitness class offerings (both online and in person) include yoga, Pilates, water aerobics, strength training, and Zumba. Team Survivor relies on the generosity of the community to help sustain the quality and breadth of its offerings.”I feel unlucky but so lucky,”
“ THE MEMBERS AND INS TRUC T ORS A C CEP T Y OU AND CELEBRA TE Y OU JUS T A S Y OU ARE. ” Team Survivor on their Ruth Mountain climb. Robertson says. “The generosity of people is incredible - I don’t have to empty my wallet because so many generous people support these classes to make it possible for me.” Boyer encourages the Newcastle community to learn more about Team Survivor Northwest (https/ teamsurvivornw.org) and find ways to get involved in this important cause. “A woman’s ability to return to her health after a cancer diagnosis should not be limited to those who can afford to have a pass at a gym. Every woman deserves access to the health benefits of exercise in a safe, inclusive environment,” she says. “This is a group of inspiring women who have refused to let cancer define their limits and they are lifting others up on their journey to recovery and beyond.” •Master deck builder •Custom patio covers •Siding remodel & installation •Garage and ADU’S •Concrete patios, pavers, & driveways •Interior remodel & renovations CONSTRUCTION KINGS ONE PRICE GUARANTEE Greet Newcastle & Newport Hills 15 253-263-3384
FAVORITE PETS MEET FINNLEY AKA Finney, Finney Foo Foo, and Finnerona BY NICHOLE ABBOTTS, NEWCASTLE RESIDENT R yan, Nichole, Cuyler and Ellie Abbotts live in the Newcastle Highlands with their cats Fiona and Finnley. Finnley is a Siamese Cat and is a year and a half old. Where/why did you get your pet? You may remember Fiona, who was featured in the Newcastle Magazine a few years ago. Fiona needed a buddy, and someone besides Nichole to pick on. We found Finnley at the Seattle Animal Shelter. She was only 2 months old and had been abandoned and found in a bad situation (with gasoline all over her fur). We were so happy to give her a new home, lots of love and a big sister to play with.
Is there a story behind its name? We liked Finney, but that sounded more like a boy’s name. We settled on Finnley (but we all still call her Finney, too, and Finney Foo Foo, and Finnerona). Is there anything special or unusual about them (talents/quirks)? Because she was a rescue kitten, she is very afraid of people. It took us several months to earn her trust. These days, you’ll find her playing with her sister, begging for dinner from mom, and zommie-ing around the house with her favorite poof ball. What do you like best about your pet? We love that we finally have earned her trust to cuddle with us at night. She will lay at the foot of our bed. One way we worked to earn her trust was through head bumps. Cats head bump those that that they like or that are seen as safe people. Our family has each lucked out with getting those Finnley head bumps of love. Any funny stories? She is grounded for life. We always suspected she may not get to play in our backyard like her sister, Fiona, gets to do every day. We worried that a sound might scare her away. After letting her out a few times in July, our escape artist got scared of the Blue Angels practicing and ran away for 8 hours. It was near impossible to get her back home. Her sister helped lure her and she is inside only from now on! She’s also really silly with her favorite poof and squish ball. She carries those around like a dog would carry its bone. How spoiled is your pet? Very! She gets special treats, lots of love, and plenty of table scraps from her mom. What else should we know about your pet? How has she enriched your home? Finnley is a best friend for Fiona, and someone to bring our family lots of love and laughter. We were heartbroken when we thought she was lost a few weeks ago, and will treasure her even more than ever. We love our pets and the planet. “I was sick and tired of buying the same old impersonal name brand pet-food treats for my dogs. Just Right Bite gave me a perfect alternative. A cute product and a great team of women behind it- such a bonus that it is so sustainable." -Daniel, Seattle WA Our pets deserve the best, healthiest treats. We produce our treats with natural, high-quality ingredients (including our bugs!). www.jrbpetfood.com Greet Newcastle & Newport Hills 17

NEIGHBOR TO NEIGHBOR TIMELESS LESSONS Courtesy of The Skally Boys! Seems like it’s working out the way it is supposed to… life is full of lemons and strikeouts, it’s what you do with them that matters most! BY CHRISTINA AND MATT SKALLY, TEAM SKALLY, NEWCASTLE RESIDENTS W e wanted to share a few of our recent experiences that reminded us of invaluable life lessons. Last month, we talked about borrowing vs. buying. This month we’re onto Lesson #2: Turning Lemons into Lemonade. Our oldest son Dominic’s lifelong dream has been to play college baseball. Trying to earn an opportunity to play a collegiate sport these days feels very much like a full-time job. Gone are the days of our childhood, when we played multiple sports (only during their proper season) and could be competitive. To help his chances of making his baseball dreams come true, Dominic, like many kids, chose to give up other sports and train all year round. So, at the ripe old age of 15, he hung up his football pads and basketball shoes and went all in with baseball. Seemed a bit young to go “all in” to us, but what do we know, we used to play street ball and “kick the can” back in the day. Over the last few years, Dominic has certainly progressed and performed well on the field and in the classroom. A handful of D1 schools were reaching out to him regularly and were scheduled Dominic fishing! 34 October 2023
to come to see him play this summer. Life was going as planned and was good… Then, during the final game of his high-school season, Dominic suffered a broken (dominant) hand while sliding into home plate. While his team achieved 3rd place in the State Tournament (yay!), Dominic came home in despair. He was going to be out for 12+ weeks and miss the opportunity to play in front of interested college coaches that would help him secure his scholarship as planned. After a brief trip through the valley of despair, Dominic started turning his lemon into lemonade. He started going fishing every day, his favorite non-baseball hobby that he never had time for because he was always playing and traveling for baseball. He hung out with friends he hadn’t had time for and was able to go to summer camp with his cousins, activities he normally would have had to pass on to play baseball instead. Ironically, this “Lost Summer” became the “Summer of Opportunity.” A summer to just be a kid; to find joy in life Ironically, this “Lost Summer” became the “Summer of Opportunity.” A summer to just be a kid; to find joy in life beyond baseball. He also learned a lot about the most important part of baseball and the great game of life, how to be mentally strong and choose the right attitude. In short, he learned how to turn lemons into lemonade. beyond baseball. He also learned a lot about the most important part of baseball and the great game of life, how to be mentally strong and choose the right attitude. In short, he learned how to turn lemons into lemonade. We’re happy to report that Dominic is well on his way to recovery and is back training to earn his collegiate opportunity. Seems like it’s working out the way it is supposed to… life is full of lemons and strikeouts, it’s what you do with them that matters most! Next month we’re excited to bring to you our final segment of this series, it’s about an acronym we created called BHBD. We can’t wait to share it with you! Until then, we hope all your lifestyle dreams come true. Your friends and neighbors, Matt & Christina Skally What you eat can actually make your teeth stronger! TEEN TALK SUSTAINABLE LIVING: YOUTH PERSPECTIVE Jasleen is a consistent contributor to Greet Newcastle & Newport Hills. She’s a Senior at Liberty High School. For over ten years, she has been closely involved with her community through school, extracurriculars, local events and volunteer work. BY JASLEEN KINDRA, NEWCASTLE RESIDENT AND STUDENT WRITER, LIBERTY HIGH SCHOOL W hen I think about the state of our world, the looming specters of climate change, global warming, and environmental degradation are hard to ignore. I feel like these issues take more of a toll on Gen Z, as these issues aren’t just distant problems but pressing challenges we’re going to inherit. The constant warnings on news and social media stir up a complex mix of emotions – fear, frustration, and sometimes even a sense of powerlessness. But I’m very optimistic that things can turn around. In recent years, there’s been a surge in climate-conscious consumption. You’ve probably seen it on social media – people embracing bamboo furniture, eco-friendly glassware, and clothing made from organic cotton. It’s awesome to witness these efforts to protect our planet. However, it’s also crucial to acknowledge that these choices may not be feasible for everyone, and that it’s ok to sometimes turn to whatever is most convenient. I had a chat with my dad about sustainable living, and I asked him, ‘What do you think of when you hear those words?’ He replied, “New generation, West Coast, recycling, solar energy, wind power, and more biking.” It got me thinking how sustainable living has changed and is often linked with the values and habits of our generation. So, how can each of us, regardless of where we are in life, embrace sustainability without feeling overwhelmed? Here are some simple steps: • Take shorter showers. • Be mindful of lighting usage. • Reduce single-use plastics. • Consider reducing meat consumption. • Unplug electronics when not in use. • Make the switch to energy-efficient LED bulbs. • Opt for electronic bills to save paper. 36 October 2023 • Choose seasonal produce. • Share clothes directly with friends and family instead of donating them. • Opt for DIY Halloween costumes and decorations. I used to wonder if my individual actions really mattered. After all, what can one person do? But I’ve come to realize that every small step counts. It’s easy to fall into the trap of feeling helpless in the face of these global challenges, but we’re not powerless. WHY DOES YOUR INDIVIDUAL IMPACT MATTER? • Collective Impact: When many of us make sustainable choices, it creates a substantial collective impact. • Setting an Example: Your actions can inspire others, regardless of age. • Consumer Influence: Your choices influence what businesses offer. • Personal Satisfaction: Living sustainably can enhance your quality of life. • Continuous Learning: Embracing sustainability leads to personal growth and resilience. We often find ourselves consumed by busy lives, leaving little room for sweeping change. The reality of climate issues can be daunting. But there’s something powerful in realizing that even small, practical steps can make a genuine impact for everyone. Reducing your energy consumption, supporting sustainable businesses when you can, or simply reusing items can collectively drive meaningful change. It’s not about saving the world overnight; it’s about doing what you can, today. By embracing these small actions, you’re not just making a difference; you’re finding a real, tangible hope in knowing that together, we can create a better future!!
