Board members later agreed unanimously to “refer back to [the] sponsor” a measure that would have amended the existing contract between the Everett School Department and Malden Trans, Inc. THE EVERETT ADVOCATE – FRiDAy, JunE 10, 2022 Page 3 Mayor announces new Fitness Court at Glendale Park The ribbon cutting for the new Fitness Court at Glendale Park will take place on June 15 at 10 a.m. Special to The Advocate M ayor Carlo DeMaria and the City of Everett are pleased to announce a new Fitness Court at Glendale Park that was built in partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts (Blue Cross) and the National Fitness Campaign (NFC) to expand free, equitable access to outdoor exercise programs for Everett residents. Mayor DeMaria and the City of Everett invite residents to join the celebration as they cut the ribbon to open the new Fitness Court at Glendale Park at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 15, 2022. The new Fitness Court® at Glendale Park is an open-air wellness center that allows users of all ages and fitness levels to leverage 30 pieces of bodyweight equipment to get a complete workout. New users can also download the free Fitness Court App – a coach-inyour-pocket-style platform – that transforms the outdoor gym into a digitally supported wellness ecosystem. The Fitness Court App is available for iOS and Android. “Promoting equitable access to health and fitness has always been a key facet of my Administration,” said Everett Mayor DeMaria. “It is with great pride and excitement that the City of Everett announces the launch of this outdoor fitness court. From opening up the waterfront for recreational activities, supporting community, urban farms, implementing a community wellness center, creating a Food Policy Council, this outdoor fitness court, made possible through our partnership with the National Fitness Campaign and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, brings our City one step closer toward achieving truly equitable access to health for our residents.” “Blue Cross is committed to helping people live healthy lives and eliminating the physical and social barriers that lead to health disparities,” said Blue Cross Vice President of Corporate Citizenship and Public Affairs Jeff Bellows. “We’re proud to partner with NFC and the City of Everett to launch our first Fitness Court in the Commonwealth that will provide Everett residents a communal gathering space and access to premiere free outdoor fitness opportunities.” Everett is the first outdoor court in a series of 15 Blue Cross Fitness Courts that will be constructed in easily accessible public spaces throughout 2022-2023. The partnership of Blue Cross with NFC is part of the company’s strengthened corporate citizenship commitment to promote health justice in communities across the Commonwealth. Over the next five years, Blue Cross will provide $16 million in grants and volunteer support to notfor-profits working to address food, environmental and racial justice in Massachusetts communities. This work supports the company’s overall pledge (announced in 2021) to be a leader in addressing health inequities across the Commonwealth. NFC developed the trademarked seven-station system in 2012 hoping to inspire municipalities to transform public spaces into community fitness hubs. There are currently 150 active Fitness Court locations across the country, and the campaign will reach a total of 500 cities and schools by the end of 2023. For more information, visit nationalfitnesscampaign. com/Massachusetts or the City of Everett’s Facebook Page or contact 311.

THE EVERETT ADVOCATE – FRiDAy, JunE 10, 2022 Page 5 THE CITY CLERK MUST RESIGN! The Truth Demands It! Dear Everett Residents, The City Council has a big decision looming over its head. The decision to reappoint current City Clerk Sergio Cornelio will be coming up for a formal vote in the very near future. I’m writing today not only to request the city council to not reappoint Cornelio, but to also inform you as to why Cornelio should resign immediately. I want to begin by saying I heard our residents loud and clear, especially our youngest voices. The hurtful and insensitive racist dialogue that I engaged in was not to be tolerated and I resigned as a result to hold myself and others accountable. In hindsight, I wish I had resigned sooner. On the receiving end of each and every message published was City Clerk Sergio Cornelio, who most often replied with a “LOL”. He was also present in each video that had been released; however, his face was conveniently covered. Cornelio must be held to the same standard of zero tolerance. If we truly are to eradicate systemic racism within our local government, we must call for his resignation. I’ve learned that being an anti-racist means calling out racism every time we see it, not just when we choose to as a matter of political convenience. In 2011, the voters of Everett ratified a new city charter, eliminating lifetime appointments in the City Clerk’s office. In 2017, Sergio Cornelio was appointed City Clerk. Barely through the first half of his term, Cornelio made the push for a charter change to reinstate lifetime tenure for his position. Although the measure received more favorable than unfavorable votes, a 2/3 majority was not secured to pass the change; however, Cornelio, acting unethically and deceitfully, took it upon himself to hand deliver the paperwork to our State Senator’s office and gave the impression it had passed, setting the course for the passage of a home rule petition by the state legislature. If not for the then Council President catching it, who knows how far through the legislative process the piece would have gone. Over the past five years, Cornelio has plagued his office with mismanagement, greed and disturbing behavior. Cornelio’s base salary is $124,285. His predecessor, who had over two decades of public service, retired from the position at $96,000 annually. Cornelio also receives a $14,350 annual stipend to clerk the City Council meetings, most of which he has missed since September. Such stipend is limited by Mass. General Law not to exceed $4,000 annually if a city clerk serves as the clerk of the council. Under Cornelio’s leadership, a measure was passed to circumvent that law, enabling him to decide his level of compensation. He also receives an additional $10,500 stipend to serve as the Chair of the Election Commission. Another stipend was received so he could act as the city’s record access officer. In addition, it is estimated he receives an additional $30,000 annually for officiating weddings, the majority of which are performed on city time. It’s unknown whether or not Cornelio claims the wedding money on his finances, as most of it is cash. Include longevity and that is an estimated $180,000 in annual compensation. He just might be one of the highest paid City Clerks in the Commonwealth. As if that level of greed isn’t bad enough, it has been widely speculated that Cornelio has manipulated his office payroll on multiple occasions. There have been countless times Cornelio has been out of the country, on golf trips or moonlighting as a snowplow operator for a local contractor while claiming to be working from home. In my honest opinion, the level of alleged fraud here doesn’t get any more blatant than that. The former city clerk, the late Michael Matarazzo, worked extremely hard to establish Everett’s election commission, separating the clerk’s office from elections to ensure their impartiality. Cornelio worked twice as hard to dismantle that and made himself the chairman of the election commission in order to have a direct role in the election process. Last September, Cornelio made public claims that Mayor Carlo DeMaria had extorted him in a real estate partnership. He made these blatantly false claims weeks before the preliminary election, nearly six months after he and DeMaria parted ways. This was intentionally done in an effort to influence the Election, and thus destroyed the notion of impartiality attributed to the office of City Clerk. In the aftermath of his public claims, Cornelio disappeared for several months. He claimed to have been on paid paternity leave, although the City of Everett has no such policy. He abandoned his office in the middle of the most contentious election the city had seen in nearly two decades, leaving his co-workers to scramble to figure things out. That being said, Sergio Cornelio has disgraced the Office of City Clerk. On a final note, the Everett City Council will be doing the residents of Everett a great disservice if they vote to automatically reappoint Cornelio. I’ve realized that the days of automatic reappointments and political favoritism have gotten us to where we are. I sincerely regret my support of Cornelio’s appointment as Everett’s City Clerk. I now ask the City Council to open up the process – seek a qualified pool of candidates and make the most qualified decision for Everett’s next City Clerk. You owe it to the people. Very truly yours, Anthony N. DiPierro (Paid Advertisement)

Page 6 THE EVERETT ADVOCATE – FRiDAy, JunE 10, 2022 Holly Garcia earns Juris Doctor degree from Mass. School of Law O n June 3, Holly Garcia graduated from Massachusetts School of Law (MSLAW) with a Juris Doctor degree. On that exact date in 2009 she graduated from Everett High School after having 14 years of perfect attendance. After high school, she graduated from Southern New Hampshire University with a bachelor’s degree in 2013 and again with a master’s degree in 2015. It has been her ambition to become a lawyer since she was 10 years old. She will sit for the bar exam in July and plans to practice family and juvenile law. During her time at MSLAW, she was the president of the Student Bar Association and the Diversity Alliance. She also participated in the MSLAW Meal Moderator program and served hot meals to residents of the Greater Lawrence YMCA once a month. All of this involvement in student activities and her continuous positive attitude contributed to her being honored as a Dean’s Award recipient at her commencement ceremony. Holly is also very involved in serving Everett. She’s the chairperson for the Everett Citizens Foundation, the Faith Formation Director for Immaculate Conception, a Girl Scout Leader, the EHS Varsity Hockey Cheerleading coach and a member of the E Club. She also volunteers at food pantries and many other city-sponsored events. Working full time during the day and being a full time night student while keeping up with her additional involvements wasn’t an easy task, but she conquered that challenge. Holly is the first in her family to graduate from law school, and they are all very proud of her accomplishments. San Francisco Sheriff Paul Miyamoto and Middlesex Sheriff Peter Koutoujian - colleagues and friends through Major County Sheriffs of America (MCSA) - spoke by phone this weekend, agreeing to a wager for charity. “It’s been 58 years since FATHER’S DAY IS COMING! Sheriff Miyamoto and I, as well as our staffs, have partnered through MCSA to improve our agencies and the crucial work of sheriffs. However, this week we are rivals,” said Sheriff Koutoujian. “I have no doubt that Sheriff Miyamoto will be donning Celtics green come next week as we hang banner 18 in the Garden.” “Our only Green is Draymond Green,” said Sheriff Miyamoto. “I’ve already bought a blue and gold DubNation sweatshirt for Sheriff Koutoujian. I respect him and admire the work he’s done for his community but at the end of this series, we are hopeful that the trophy will stay in the Bay... the San Francisco Bay.” Joking aside, the real beneficiaries will be the children of Boys and Girls Clubs in San Francisco and Middlesex counties. Drastic cuts to VOCA will leave PTH to operate on $131,490 in fiscal year 2023 – a severe reduction.Considering that PTH spends less than 5% on administrative costs where its management team already volunteers time to carry-out administrative functions in order to dedicate funds for direct care service programs, the 27% budget cut will strap the organization and eliminate its Emergency Shelter program.“In talking with the public, they are as perplexed as we are as to why government keeps cutting funding to agencies serving some of our most vulnerable community members – especially when they realize all the helpful services that we provide,” said Linda Morris, a survivor who has been sharing her time as a Victim Advocate at PTH for seventeen years.“As a survivor whose own life was impacted by a family member killed by her abuser, I struggle to understand why PTH and similar agencies are forced to beg for funding every year,” said Morris. VOCA funding is administered by the Massachusetts Office for Victim Assistance (MOVA); and MOVA announced that 124 programs and 220 victim services jobs across the Commonwealth are impacted by the drastic cuts to VOCA funds.“A state investment is critically needed to sustain and stabilize victim services across the Commonwealth to continue supporting victims and survivors,” announced MOVA. PTH’s Founder, Deborah Fallon, a survivor of violent crime, is appreciative of the work that MOVA and the Victim and Witness Assistance Board (VWAB), which is chaired by Attorney General Maura Healey, are doing in partnership with the Massachusetts Legislature to bridge the funding gap via the “VOCA Bridge Act”. “MOVA and VWAB have been outstanding partners in our work serving people impacted by violent crime,” said Fallon.“Every person has the right to live free from abuse, and while PTH and like programs are already inundated and focused-in on providing direct care services to people, we look to MOVA, VWAB and our legislators as our advocates in helping us to remain fully funded.” MOVA announced that the Massachusetts Legislature named a Conference Committee to “reconcile diff erences between the House and Senate fi nal budgets”. Conference Committee members are: Representatives Michlewitz, Ferrante, and Smola and Senators Rodrigues, Friedman, and O’Connor.MOVA continues to advocate for a fully-funded VOCA Bridge to sustain services for victims and survivors and is “requesting that the Conference Committee maintain the $20M investment included in the House budget to bridge one-year of impending cuts” to VOCA funded programs for fi scal year 2023. To help support these eff orts, please call PTH (781) 338-7678 or email portaltohope@aol. com.“Over the course of our own lives, many of us, unfortunately, will know of someone whose life has been impacted by domestic violence crime. Eric Demas, chief financial officer for Everett, said costs need to be considered closely before the bidding process takes place. He said renegotiating contracts may not be tenable. “Every contract should be taken on a case-bycase basis,” he said. “Every case is different. Every contract is different. My opinion is I don’t think it would be a good idea.” Responding to a question from at-large board member Cynthia Sarnie regarding fluctuating costs, Demas said he needs to check the specifics of city contracts to determine whether changes can be made. “I would say that we have our set of standard blanket contracts where we have the ability to amend each contract,” he said. “But that obviously takes two parties. Carrington, a freshman at Everett High School, said students were questioned in a recent survey, and the results showed many feel field trips can lead to unique learning experiences. “We work all year in the classroom, and it gets stressful at times, he said. “Not all learning takes place in the classroom.” Carrington said many of the students in the survey felt field trips should take place after MCAS testing is complete. Looking for Mom Dear Looking, The chore of dressing and Pictured are Best Man Butchie, Groom Salvatore Saldutti, Justice of the Peace Wayne Matewsky, Bride Marion Ellis and Maid of Honor Patty Gagliardi. undressing in traditional clothing can be diffi cult, time-consuming and even painful for millions of people with certain health and mobility problems. Fortunately, there’s a wide variety special clothing, known as “adaptive clothing,” that can help with most dressing challenges. Here’s what you should know. What is Adaptive Clothing? Adaptive clothing is specially designed garments for people with mobility issues, disabilities and cognitive challenges who have a diffi cult time getting dressed. This type of clothing incorporates discreet design features to make dressing and undressing easier, while still having the outward appearance of typical clothing. Depending on your mom’s Newlyweds Salvatore Saldutti and Marion Ellis of Everett recently tied the knot. Councilman Wayne Matewsky was on hand to offi ciate the ceremony as Justice of the Peace. The event will take place on Friday, July 15 at the Connolly Center located at 90 Chelsea Street in Everett from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. We invite all of our community’s seniors to attend this barbecue to kick off the summer season. This year’s theme for the barbecue is Americana, so we encourage all participants to wear patriotic clothing. This event is for Everett seniors only and proof of resof nearly 2,500 students. The student body consists of 1,700 traditional students and nearly 800 continuing education and graduate students. The College off ers a wide array of co-curricular activities ranging from 16 NCAA Division III athletic teams to an outstanding theatre and fi ne arts program. Visit us on the web at www.curry.edu needs, here are some of the many diff erent types of adaptive clothing options that could help. For self-dressing seniors who suff er from Parkinson’s or other disabilities that aff ect dexterity, there are pants, shirts, dresses and outerwear made with Velcro or magnetic closures instead of buttons and zippers, which are much easier to fasten and unfasten. But be aware that magnetic closures are not suitable for those who have pacemakers. For those who are disabled or who have limited range of motion and need assistance dressing, there are adaptive pants with zippers or snaps on both sides of the pants that are easier to pull on. And a wide range of rear closure shirts, tops and dresses with Velcro or snap fasteners in the back for those who can’t raise their arms over their head. For wheelchair users there idency will be required upon registration. The registration period to sign is up from July 1 to July 8. To register, please call 617394-2323 or 617-394-2260 or visit the Connolly Center in-person. Also, please indicate if you require transportation when you register. are higher back and elastic waistband pants that don’t slip down, as well as pants with fabric overlaps at the seat to allow for easier toileting access. For people with tactile sensitivity, there are garments you can purchase that have soft and stretchy fabrics without tags and are sewn with fl at seams to help preventing chafi ng. And for seniors with Alzheimer’s disease there are onepiece jumpsuits that have a back-zipper access to prevent the wearer from disrobing inappropriately. Where to Shop? Because each person’s dressing needs and style is so specific, fi nding appropriate adaptive clothing can be diffi cult. Recently, mainstream clothing stores like JCPenney (jcpenney.com), Target (target.com) and Tommy Hilfi ger (usa.tommy.com) have started offering a line of adaptive clothing for adults that combines fashion and functionality, but their instore options are limited. To get a bigger selection, visit the store’s website and type in “adaptive clothing” in their search engine. You can also fi nd a large selection at online stores that specialize in adaptive clothing like Buck & Buck (buckandbuck. com) and Silverts (silverts.com). Both of these companies have been selling adaptive clothing for decades and off er a wide variety of garments to accommodate almost any need, condition or style, for independent self-dressers and for those who need help. Some other adaptive clothing sites you should visit include Joe & Bella (joeandbella. com), Ovidis (ovidis.com), and IZ Adaptive (izadaptive.com), which sells clothing primarily designed for wheelchair users. And, if your mom is in need of adaptive footwear, Velcro fastening shoes (instead of shoelaces) have long been a popular option and can be found in most local shoe stores. Some other new lines of adaptive shoes that may interest her include Kiziks (kizik.com) and Zeba (zebashoes.com), which make fashionable sneakers and comfortable walking shoes that just slip on, handsfree, along with Billy Footwear (billyfootwear.com) and Friendly Shoes (friendlyshoes.com), which makes uniquely designed zip-on shoes. This week, Beacon Hill Roll Call reports local senators’ roll call attendance records for the 2022 session through June 3. The Senate has held 69 roll calls so far in the 2022 session. Beacon Hill Roll Call tabulates the number of roll calls on which each senator voted and then calculates that number as a percentage of the total roll call votes held. That percentage is the number referred to as the roll call attendance record. Thirty-six of the 40 senators did not miss any roll calls and have 100 percent roll call attendance records. This high level of participation can likely be attributed to the fact that under emergency rules adopted because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the vast majority of the 40 senators are not in the Senate chamber during a session. Most are watching and listening to the session from their home, business or Senate office and casting their votes remotely. MassHealth is the state’s Medicaid program that provides health care for low-income and disabled persons. “The Massachusetts Senate has taken another step to combat inequities in maternal health,” said sponsor Sen. Representative Alexia O’Brien (ERM Engineering and Consulting, Inc., 1 Beacon Street, Boston, MA.) Environmental Resources Management (ERM), on behalf of Distrigas of Massachusetts LLC (Distrigas) had prepared this Notice of Intent and supporting documentation for installation of a mooring bollard dolphin in the City of Everett. In detail, one new in-water mooring dolphin will be installed at the Everett Marine Terminal in Everett. The project will take about 60 days and work will be limited to hours between 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Once operational, the proposed mooring will provide optimal mooring points for vessels berthing at the terminal. An onshore concrete footing is proposed on land to support a simple span bridge to access the mooring dolphin. Restoration of the asphalt surface following construction of the walkway footing of raised concrete will support the simple span gangway connected to the mooring dolphin. The onshore concrete footing is proposed on the edge of an existing paved parking area at 18 Rover Street. Distrigas proposed to replace the parking area to maintain it in good condition. Workspace within the Riverfront Area will take place on existing paved surface that does play a role in the protection of the private or public water supply; groundwater; flood control; storm damage; pollution prevention; the protection of land containing shellfish; to protect wildlife habitat or to protect fisheries. Following construction, temporary workspace will be paved to match pre-construction elevation. As indicated: “Distrigas of Massachusetts LLC requests that the City of Everett Conservation Commission will issue an “Order of Conditions” for the proposed project after the Public Hearing.
