Wesley United Methodist Church 2200 Phoenix, Fort Smith, AR 72901 www.Wesleyumcfs.org August 2019 Newsletter Wesley strives to be a church that keeps Jesus the main thing in all we do. This means we try to offer the same grace, love, and acceptance that Jesus offers others. We strive to love God and our neighbors with everything we have and everything we are. We believe faith is meant to be lived out within community. We believe that all people are made in the image of God and of sacred worth.

From Pastor Zeke Page 1 From the Desk of Pastor Zek “Love is the Answer, Now What Was the Question” “Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony” -Colossians 3:14 If you could name one thing people would remember you for, what would it be? I think about this because it is a good tool to refocus decisions and actions day to day. As I think about the future of our church, I am always asking this question: “What church will my grandchildren inherit?” This question helps me focus the decisions made today. I hope that my grandchildren will inherit a vibrant church, strong in community and Christ-centered, to name a few. Like it or not, we all are leaving a legacy. Our words and our actions influence what it will become. If there was just one thing we could leave as a legacy, I would hope it would be love. In this text from Colossians it sums it up beautifully. Love is like clothes you put on daily. It is a daily decision which takes effort and intentionality. I would hope that people speak of our church as “loving”. There is not another characteristic which sums up what should be the goal of one’s life not the goal of the church. We will be known by how much we loved. With the decisions you will face today, this week, and this month I hope that this question will become an integral part of your decision: “How can I love more today?” It is simple but not easy. I believe, in doing so, we will create a perfect harmony that we have yet to experience. Keep the Faith Strong, Rev. Zeke Wesley UMC Newsletter August 2019

Music Ministry, Security Policy Page 3 Greetings!!! Dear Wesley UMC Family, Greetings! I want to thank everyone who volunteered to provide offertory specials during the month of July. The choir and I thank you so much for helping give them a much needed break. Alas, summer is coming to a close, and the break will soon be over. Bell Chancel choirs will once again begin rehearsals on Wednesday, August 7th. Bells will meet at 6:15 and Chancel Choir will meet at 7:00. Speaking of bells, we need one or two people who like music who would be willing to learn how to ring. Some may think that ringing bells is difficult. However, if you can count to three or four and know your left hand from your right, you can ring bells. The bottom line is that our Chancel and Bell choirs make beautiful music and have fun doing it!! So, we want to invite anyone who likes to sing or ring to be a part! Yours in Christ, Shane Trustees Note Part of the church’s security policy is the sanctuary doors from the East and South parking lots are locked 5 minutes after the 9:30 service starts. If they are locked when you arrive there is door bell button to the right of each door that you push to alert someone to come and let you in. The doors to the other parts of the building are also locked. Wesley UMC Newsletter Lenten Service on March 25 @ Vietnamese UMC August 2019

Community Rescue Mission Page 5 The Community Rescue Mission’s Board is made up of members of the Fort Smith churches. Norma and Harley has represented Wesley for several years. The Mission is faith based, receives no federal, state, or municipal funds; it is funded solely by individual and cooperate donations. In addition to money & donated food they are always in need of personal items for their residents. Listed below are items that they need on a regular basis. Wesley is providing a drop off box in the church office for donated items during office hours 8:30am-12:00 noon Monday-Thursday. If you have items you want to give and you are unable to bring them to the church, you can call Harley and Norma and they will be glad to pick them up. Helping the Mission with their needs in providing for the homeless and needy is a blessing. Pastors from the churches represented on the board lead the worship service each Sunday. Cub Scouts Page 6 Pack 19 has concluded another great month of Scouting adventure. We started the month off by designing and building kites from scratch. No 2 kites were the same. Some small and some big and everything in between. The following week we attempted to fly the kites, but Mother Nature would not allow enough wind for extended flight. Awards were given for longest flight, largest kite, most Scout spirit and best design. The weekend of July 20 & 21 Pack 19 headed to Blue Mountain Lake for our annual summer camping trip. It was a scorcher. Even with the heat, fun was had by all with games, swimming, relaxing, playground time and fellowship. The BSA is one of a few groups allowed to officially retire US flags and we presented a flag retirement ceremony at the campground. The Scouts invited other campers to join us for the program. Over 20 flags were properly retired by fire in a solemn and special ceremony. It is always a proud and moving moment. On the 23rd scouters visited the Eastgate swimming pool for some water fun. And finally on the 30th Pack 19 took over the Creekmore Putt Putt for some heated minigolf competition and sno-cones. As children get ready to head back to school it is also a great time to get into Scouting. All interested families are invited to attend any Pack event to meet other Scouts and check us out.
