Page 6 THE MALDEN ADVOCATE–Friday, October 25, 2024 ~ Malden Musings ~ Say Hello to Stella Ruth Larson By Peter Levine “M alden Musings” breaking news, this just in... Welcome to the world... On October 6, weighing in at 6 lbs. 10 oz., sweet Baby Stella Ruth Larson arrived. Congratulations to Gregory and Katie Larson on their beautiful bouncing bundle of baby joy! Greg’s late dad, Eddie, would be extremely proud of his precious granddaughter, and I am positive would shower her with Grampy love. As you could tell by the picture, Uncle Kevin is overjoyed. Word has it that a baseball glove is en route for Baby Stella, and honorary Edgeworth status has already been bestowed upon her! Way Gerry D’Ambrosio Attorney-at-Law Is Your Estate in Order? It is said in “Malden Musings”... • If you weren’t already aware – this is old news to most of the North Shore, just sayin’ – Jerry Mathers of “Leave it to Beaver” fame made a special guest appearance at Phil & Cory’s Sportsworld on Route 1. Just as a reminder, at his shop on Route 1, Phil has the very best celebrity personal appearances in the Greater Boston area. That ain’t fake news! The eclectic group of celebrities and athletes he has hired over the years to sign/ meet & greet the public is simply amazing. Also, I have it from a very reliable source that Phil has helped many a former celeb who was down on his luck. Great guy, that Phil Castinetti! So, long lines waited outside to greet their childhood idol and, according to that very same reliable source, absolutely nobody left that afternoon disappointed. Sal Giarratani in the Revere Advocate gave a fi rsthand account of his once-in-a-lifetime meetup with the Beav. Great reading. • Closer to home, Harry Meho’s little brother Johnny was on-site for the bucket list event. “Meats” is besties with Phil and never misses an opportunity to support the 1974 Revere High School graduate. Phil is a local treasure on the North Shore – with his place Sportsworld the last of a dying breed. Again, I digress. Take it away, Johnny: “[T]he afternoon was an overwhelming success. Jerry and his lovely wife Teresa were greeted by cheers from the crowd that had gathered before the 1 o’clock start time. The Beav smiled, signed and had a few words with everyone who came through the door, well past the 3 o’clock end time. Phil said it was one of his best autograph signings to date. I understand Phil and the Mathers enjoyed dinner in the North End later that night followed by taking in a little Feast action where Jerry was quite a hit talking with anyone who recognized and approached him. For those who missed him this time, Jerry assured Phil next year same time Greg and Kevin Larson with baby Stella he would love to come back to the Boston area. Keep an eye on the Sportsworld website for autograph signings in the future.” • Mark Gianatassio was also in the house: “Up at Sportsworld with the Beaver, Jerry Mathers. The store was packed this past Sunday to see him. What a great humble Hollywood icon he is! We took him and his wife to the North End for dinner and to the Saint Anthony’s Feast where he got to meet and greet a lot of people! He is planning to come back to Sportsworld again next year. Great to see you Beav!” • I mentioned Malden Strongman competitor and gentle giant Dan Ford in a column a year or two back. Dan graduated Malden High School in 1992 and is as nice a kid as MHS has ever produced (with a father like George, how could he not be?!). Dan was a football star at MHS but was an even better wrestler. He won the 1992 state heavyweight wrestling championship and went on to fi nish second in the New England’s. After high school Malden’s “Gentle Giant” was a threeyear starter at Murray State, fi nishing up his football career playing semipro for the “Townies of Charlestown.” He turned professional “strongman” in 2002 after placing second in a national qualifying competition the year before. He once confessed that the most daunting event in strongman comp, for him, was the “Farmer’s Walk.” This consisted of racing a 240-foot slalom MUSINGS| SEE PAGE 18 Monogram D4 Double siding Harvey Vinyl 66 Replacement Windows Custom Aluminum Trim work Windows & Doors Top quality Vinyl Siding! •Vinyl Siding •Carpentry Work •Decks •Roofing •Free Estimates •Replacement Windows •Fully Licensed •Fully Insured

On Thursday, November 7, at 6:30 PM at the Malden Public Library, the community is invited to learn about their fascinating work in a new presentation, “Malden Ancestors and New Technologies at Bell Rock Burying Ground.” After spending more than two decades leading archaeological surveys in Syria, Turkey, Iran and Iraq, Dr. Jason Ur has turned his attention to the Colonial burying grounds of New England. During the pandemic, he flew a camera drone over nearly two dozen burying grounds, with a particular emphasis on Bell Rock. In addition to creating 3d models using those photographs, Ur has recently partnered with Malden historian Mark Linehan, who has taken this work further to re-animate this mortuary landscape with the lives of early Malden residents. On November 7, they will present their work. In addition to sharing their methods and the results of their ongoing research, they will explain what makes Bell Rock unique compared with other burying grounds of the same era and discuss possible applications Professor Jason Ur of this research for the benefit of the City of Malden and its people. Everyone is invited to come out and learn something new about early Maldonians, early burying grounds, and new technologies for investigating the past. Mark Linehan is a Malden resident and a member of the Malden Historical Society. For the last eleven years, he has worked as a tour guide on Boston's historic Freedom Trail. It turned out to be a great night all-around for Malden and first-year Head Coach Tiffany Cane, as Malden was able to pull out the shutout win, 1-0. On Sunday mornings he sold Globes in front of the Dunkin’ Donuts on Highland Avenue. I would pull up on my moped with my headband on (yes, I drove a moped y io and wore a headband – this was the 1980s, after all), and young Dan would greet me with “Hey Rambo, wanna buy a newspaper!?” – every Sunday morning. Are there any alternative treatment options you can tell me about? Sleepy Sam Dear Sam, I’m sorry to hear your CPAP mask is keeping you awake at night, but I’m happy to hear that you’re addressing your obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) problem. Left untreated, OSA is linked to daytime sleepiness and an increased risk of anxiety, diabetes, hypertension and stroke. For those whose aren’t familiar, OSA causes your breathing to pause during sleep because something blocks your airway, like your tongue or relaxed throat muscles. Losing weight, quitting smoking, and limiting alcohol can all help ease obstructive sleep apnea symptoms such as snoring. The primary treatment for people with moderate or severe OSA is a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine, which keeps your airway open by pumping air through a mask you wear over your mouth and/or nose when you sleep. But many people, like yourself, have diffi culty tolerating CPAP and don’t stick with it. But CPAP machines have become smaller and quieter, with more comfortable options available. And for some people with mild to moderate OSA, less invasive alternatives to CPAP may be worth considering. Here are several to ask your doctor about. Dental device: This is designed to move the jaw so that the tongue shifts toward the front of the mouth to help keep the airway open. It’s one of the primary alternatives to CPAP and can also be used with CPAP to help make severe obstructive sleep apnea milder. A dentist who specializes in sleep medicine (fi nd one at dentalsleep.org) will be able to customize its fi t to help your breathing without causing harm to your bite or teeth. These custom-made oral appliances can cost between $2,000 and $4,000 but may be covered by insurance. There are much cheaper options available online to treat snoring, but experts say these may not help with OSA, and could move teeth out of place or cause jaw issues if they’re not properly fi tted. Position therapy: For some, sleeping on the back can make obstructive sleep apnea dramatically worse. In these cases, switching to side sleeping – perhaps using pillows or a tennis ball attached to a shirt back – can sometimes help. Tongue trainer: In 2021, the Food and Drug Administration approved a tongue-stimulating device for mild sleep apnea called eXciteOSA (exciteosa.com), which people wear for 20 minutes a day for six weeks and then 20 minutes a couple of times a week indefi nitely. It costs $1,650 and is not covered by insurance. Surgery: Those who can’t tolerate CPAP could have upper airway surgery to reduce the size of their soft palate or other tissue in their throat. But such options don’t always work, have serious potential complications, and cannot be reversed. So, in general, they should not be fi rstline treatments. A newer option is a surgically implanted device called Inspire (inspiresleep.com). Approved in 2014, it stimulates a nerve that moves your tongue to keep your airway open. Inspire can be removed if it is not tolerated, but it should also be tried only if someone is unable to use CPAP, and it is not an option for everyone. Drug therapy: A new study, recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine, found that tirzepatide – the main ingredient found in type 2 diabetes medication Mounjaro and weight loss treatment Zepbound – helps reduce symptom severity by almost two-thirds in adults with obesity and obstructive sleep apnea. Ask your doctor about this option. Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior. org. MC Football coach Joe Gaff has done a boff o job at MC since being hired. Helps that he married a wonderful Edgeworth girl and 1975 MHS graduate, Nancy DeCesare. • Christian has already met MC hall monitor John “Pops” Ruelle but, of course, had no idea that Pops was one of the best athletes in Malden, back in the day. The fi rst two episodes of his “Linden USA” to this column were smash hits – with the third installment scheduled to see the light of day by the holiday season. Chris always has your back and is one of the good ones in Malden. A full-fl edged Lancer these days – and proud of it – he follows in the very large Chuck Taylor’s of his big brother Steve “Steph” Moro (another standup/legendary Malden guy). • Speaking of MC... Edgeworth guy Roberto Di Marco has sat on the Malden Catholic Board of Trustees since 2016. Rob is lifelong Malden, graduated MC in ’91 and attended Brown University and Northeastern School of Law. Yeah, this guy is like wicked smart! I got to know Rob well over the past 10 years or so from our Edgeworth connection, and all I got to say is that my life is a lot richer for it; another Malden guy with a heart of gold and love of neighborhood. • And of course, MC’s most famous son, since 2013 the junior Senator from Massachusetts – straight outta Townsend Street – our very own Ed Markey. Last time I spoke with Ed, big bro Joe and I were power walking the old neighborhood, and who do we run into also power walking his old stampin’ ground? Malden’s most celebrated son, “Eddie the Ice Cream Man.” Ed loved my column on Don Roach and wondered how Donny fl ew under his radar all these years. Ed’s the best! A walking, talking Malden history book. Fun fact told by Ed... Malden’s fi rst hoop court back in the late ’50s–early ’60s was right there at Boy’s Catholic High School on Charles Street. Yes, MC was on Charles Street in the beginning (1936) and, according to E Mark, play on the court was ferocious. I’d love to schedule some time with Eddie to get some Malden history down on paper for future generations – but I know he is busy with one of the most important presidential elections in this country’s history just a few short weeks away. Maybe after the election, Eddie, we sit and talk Malden? Keep up the great work! If the Settor of the irrevocable Trust reserves the right to determine the ultimate benefi - ciaries of the Trust, under Internal Revenue Code Section 2511 and Treasury Regulation Section 25.2511-2C, the transfer into the Trust will not be a completed gift. Since there is no gift tax in Massachusetts and the current gift tax exemption is $13.6million, most people decide not to even bother fi ling a gift tax return for informational purposes only. In a typical Medicaid irrevocable Trust, it is structured as a grantor-type trust for both income tax purposes and capital gains tax purposes. Therefore, if there was a rental property titled in the name of the irrevocable Trust, the Trust would fi le its own income tax return under its own federal ID number and the Settlor of the Trust would receive a Grantor letter in order for the Settlor to report the net rental income or loss on his or her own individual income tax return. The same would be true for any dividend income, interest income or capital gain distributions generated by the irrevocable Trust as a result of transferring any bank account, brokerage account or other investment account to the irrevocable Trust. Since the transfer to the irIt’s Time For GIFT TAXES AND MEDICAID IRREVOCABLE TRUSTS CLEAN-UPS • Reasonable rates • Fast, reliable service revocable Trust involves an incomplete gift, the other benefi t will be that the appreciated real estate or stocks, for example, in a brokerage account, will receive a step-up in cost basis at the time of the Settlor’s death, thereby providing the benefi ciaries of the irrevocable Trust a fresh starting point with the cost basis equal to the fair market value of the underlying Trust assets at the time of the Settlor’s death. Therefore, if the real estate or stock portfolio is then sold within a short period of time after the Settlor’s death, there would be either no capital gain or little capital gain to be recognized upon that subsequent sale. If your principal residence is transferred to the irrevocable Trust, and you wish to sell in the future, the Settlors of the Trust would enjoy the benefit of a $500,000 capital gain tax exclusion. For a single Settlor, the capital gain exclusion would be $250,000. If deeding to children outright, if the children do not live in the home, they will not receive the benefi t of the capital gain exclusion. Since the home is not their principal residence, and there has been a completed gift, there is a strong likelihood that the children will have to pay a capital gains tax based on their portion of the total capital gain. If the parents deeded to the children with a reserved life estate, a completed gift will have occurred and the capital gain would have to be allocated to the life tenants and the remaindermen, based upon the Book Aleph table and IRS Section 7520 interest rates applicable at the time of the sale. An irrevocable Trust would avoid those tax issues, would avoid probate and would start the fi ve-year look-back period in order to protect the Trust assets from a nursing home. Joseph D.
