Mayor Christenson proclaimed May 22, 2022, as “Keith Knight, Jr. Day” in Malden, Mass. All are encouraged to come and view the artwork and enjoy the trail. Keith Knight, Jr. – a nationally syndicated, award-winning cartoonist born and raised in Malden – is a 1984 Malden High School graduate. In his early years he was known as a Michael Jackson impersonator; he later became a popular rapper and musician. His autobio comic, “The K Chronicles,” was the inspiration for the Hulu show “Woke,” which he cocreated and wrote. Keith is well-known for using his unique style and talent to address political, social and racial issues through his art. He has also led panels at college campuses, comedy clubs, libraries and churches to help educate on various community topics and create environments of inclusion and acceptance. The idea of the Malden Arts ARTLine came after a visit to the Ed Emberley retrospective at the Worcester Art Museum in 2017. Members identified four living Malden-born artists, writers and musicians whom they invited back to Malden to celebrate their contributions to the arts with public murals in Malden. The members started with the oldest, and the Ed Emberley mural, which was designed by Naomi Kahn and painted by high school art students using Ed Emberley drawing books for inspiration, was unveiled with Ed and family in attendance on Exchange Street on May 23, 2018. This was followed by two more celebrity visits: from musician Norman Greenbaum in October 2019 for the “Spirit in the Sky” mural unveiling – art by Jesse Melanson, location also on Exchange Street – and, in December 2019, Frank Stella, who unveiled the “Frank Stella Mural” on Malden High School. The youngest of the four artists, Keith Knight, during the pandemic years came up with a Malden-centric take on his comic strip “Life’s Little Victories.” The unveiling of the Keith Knight Mural was almost four years to the day, May 22, 2022, from the first mural, the Emberley, on May 23, 2018. On Sunday, Malden High School will recognize the 444 members of the Class of 2022 with its annual Commencement Exercises. Graduates, family and friends will gather at Macdonald Stadium on Pearl Street for the 2:00 p.m. ceremony with much "pomp" and lots of "circumstance" as Malden High's newest alumni-to-be are welcomed into the ranks of graduates. Of all of the traditions that were altered, reduced or cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, great efforts were to retain and maintain the MHS graduation ceremony, In 2020, a traditional ceremony with a dramatically reduced attendance policy for guests was held at the stadium, at the height of the pandemic. For the first time in school history, Graduation Day was held in August, not June. Last year, in June 2021, a much more "normal" commencement was held at Macdonald Stadium, with a full audience in attendance. Malden High School Class of 1988 to Rededicate City Seal Advocate Staff Report he MHS Class of 1988 is pleased to announce a rededication ceremony of the Malden City Seal at 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 4, 2022 at the corner of Ferry and Salem Street. The objective of the rededication is to unveil a bronze plaque honoring the legacy of Assistant Principal John R. Benotti. The Class of ‘88 was the fi rst graduating class under the guidance of John Benotti as Assistant Principal, who served alongside Marguerite Gonsalves as Class Advisor. The administrative duo served to shape the future of the 414 class members in a way the students continue to pay forward, 34 years after passing through the doors as graduates of the high school. Arthur’s fastball may not be hitting the high 90’s any longer, but he is still sharp as a tack and a delight to speak with. Frankie may fl y under the radar, but nobody in this city for the past 50 years has worked harder at making a diff erence. • Tommy Coleman passed away recently. He’s the Coleman Arthur “The Old Ranger” Kahn brother that you didn’t know existed – unless you grew up on Clinton Street or were one of his many cousins, of course. Everybody knows Jimmy, Billy, Paul, Chris and Terry, but it seems that Tommy was the quiet one of the family. While his siblings were at Amerige or Coytemore Lea Park running wild, Tommy was studying, a bookworm to the very end, having a collection of books well over 10,000 from what I have heard. Maldonians were dancing in the street from Jimmy Murphy’s Trueman Drive in Ward 8 to the forgotten Malden, The Fellsway, across from Devir Park in Ward 2. Spontaneous keg parties, pop-up porch celebrations, and block dance parties were also reported throughout the city that night, but at the time of this writing, cannot be completely confi rmed. • I like this. Butch Gennetti has worn many hats over the years: Malden Police Commissioner, Malden Police Offi - cer, Vice President at the Italian American Citizens Club, Unoffi cial Mayor of Edgeworth and occasional drummer when the mood hit him or whoever would have him. Last week Butchie was awarded a sort of lifetime achievement award/citation from the Saint Rocco Society for his decade’s worth of contributions to the good and welfare of the annual Saint Rocco Feast. I was told he was caught off guard by the announcement. He recovered quickly, though; as his family stood and cheered, you could see he was proud as a peacock and that Butch Gennetti strut was back. Speaking of his family, Butchie’s wonderful children were on hand for the event. Butch, the patriarch of the family, has often been described by his children as a cross between Lucas McCain from “The Rifl eman,” Ward Cleaver from “Leave it To Beaver” and Mike Brady from “The Brady Bunch.” True facts. Her mom was a musician and her father and brother were both actors. Born in 1936 in NYC, Gaye moved to LA when she was two years old. “That’s Hollywood,” she quipped. Growing up, Gaye was often on the set at MGM Studios – singing and playing the piano while attending school with other child actors. Gaye maintains her parents were enthralled with the entertainment industry, but that didn’t necessarily translate into economic security. Still, the family persevered and Gaye thrived as a child prodigy. From an early age, music played a pivotal role in her life. Gaye began playing the piano at the age of three, exhibiting a rare talent. After graduating from the prestigious Julliard School, Gaye decided to experience living in diff erent parts of the country. She taught music in Minnesota, Kentucky and Mississippi. As a Pianist in Residence, Gaye relished the small town atmosphere. But she liked to mix things up and moved to Cambridge, Mass., in 1960. Playing with the prestigious Boston Symphony Orchestra, Gaye reveled in classical medleys and chamber music. Over the years, she taught music as well as performed with the symphony. Gaye fi rmly believes this ly treasure my independence. Living here enables me to have both.” Gaye participates in the daily activities off ered at the residence and looks forward to the social mealtimes. In 2019, Gaye moved into Cohen Florence Levine Estates, which is operated by Chelsea Jewish Lifecare. She is the fi rst to admit she has “a captive audience” at the assisted living. “They have to listen to me!” she admitted. “I have talent and there’s nobody here who can compete on the piano,” she said with a laugh. When asked the secret to her longevity, Gaye, who looks much younger than her 85 years, attributed her good health to a bit of luck and a zest for living. She’s adamant that she doesn’t diet. She even admitted that “I eat lots of candy!” For Gaye, aging gives her a unique perspective. “In a sense, getting older is like a puzzle,” Gaye explains. “When you reach a certain age, the pieces suddenly all fi t together.” A natural born shopper, Gaye confesses she loves to shop, especially for colorful clothing and bold jewelry. With her vibrant personality and sharp wit, Gaye’s wardrobe compliments her well. The anticipation of his wish coming true helped RJ keep a positive attitude as he regained strength following his treatment. Recently, the Make-A-Wish Club at Malden Catholic (MC) presented a check for $12,500 to Make-A-Wish® Massachusetts and Rhode Island to provide RJ with a new parrot, which he named Zeus. This is the fourth wish that the club has granted in four consecutive years. He also brought down the house. With a stunning, unprecedented announcement, Mayor Christenson drove the entire audience of students and their families to its feet in a crescendo of applause. Mayor Christenson told the members of the MHS Class of 2022 that every senior planning on furthering their education at the college level in the fall will be receiving a $1,000 scholarship from the City of Malden. In a city known to be a leader on many issues and on frequent fronts, Malden becomes the first community of the 351 cities and towns in the Commonwealth to announce such a commitment to its “young people of the moment” this high school graduation season. With over 85 percent of this year’s Malden High graduating class of 444 committed to college for the fall, the city will be making an investment of over $400,000 in the future of this year’s graduating class. The commitment approaches $500,000 when Malden residents who are college-bound seniors in other local and area high schools are included. Mayor Christenson said these students in the Class of 2022 have faced a trying challenge like no other during the COVID-19 pandemic during the past two years. (Courtesy Photo) for their families.” The Class of 2022 students and their families have had to deal with the full force of the once-in-a-lifetime pandemic. “Our students who are graduating in 2022 have endured the brunt of the COVID-19 health crisis. From remote learning, to lost earnings opportunities (for them and their families) during the pandemic, the impact has been real,” the Mayor added in a statement released Wednesday. The City of Malden will fund the first-in-Mass. financial boost with federal funds provided to Malden through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). The federal (ARPA) funds, which provided Malden with a one-time $45.7 million grant, provide the ability for cities to address the negative impacts of COVID-19. The City of Malden has been hard at work utilizing these ARPA funds to impact the community in a myriad of positive ways. (See separate story.) The plan to give a direct infusion of assistance to Malden’s college-bound seniors came after a recent discussion between Mayor Christenson, Malden City Council President Craig Spadafora (at-large) and Ward 1 Councillor Peg Crowe, who has been long active as a founding member of the city’s municipal Scholarship Committee. Words cannot really describe what these seniors have been through,” Mayor Christenson, himself a 1986 Malden High graduate, said. “This is some assistance these students deserve to help them move forward in their lives.” or over a year now, elected officials, city leaders and members of the Malden community have been working together to determine the best ways to allocate the $45.7 million the City of Malden has received from the federal American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 (ARPA). The federal law is providing $1.9 trillion in funds nationwide to help the country recover from the public health and economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, including $130.2 billion for local governments. Over a year ago, Mayor Gary Christenson formed subcommittees, with each committee being represented by a City Councillor, a community member and a City of Malden staff member with subject matter expertise. These committees were tasked with coming up with proposals for initiatives that would be the most impactful to the community, focused with the following areas: —Public Health —Business Support —Affordable Housing —Resident/Household Support —Water & Sewer Infrastructure —Recreation —Facility Upgrades —Nonprofit Support Through the work of these teams, the city of Malden already has multiple affordable housing projects in the works and also has: —Upgraded air movement systems in public schools —Initiated programs to replace lead lines in areas with the highest concentration of children —Conducted festivals to reintroduce patrons to Malden as an offset to the lost traffic and overall business revenue from public transit, among other projects ARPA funds may not be used to create jobs that require funding of any staff or personnel salaries. The Malden-based organization was chosen from a total of 580 applicants during a competitive review process. It will receive $100,000 over two years. For 30 years The Immigrant ILC has served Malden and surrounding communities. The City expects to allocate about $500,000 to fund this initiative, and the response has been overwhelming. As word spread throughout the city and region of this first-in-Massachusetts plan on Wednesday, television news stations flooded the city and interviews were held with Mayor Christenson and Malden High students, some of whom were participating in another senior class-related event at the high school, the National Honor Society induction ceremony. Malden High School seniors like Cyril Jeremie said they couldn’t believe it when they heard the news. “When I heard it, I was really shocked – considering all we’ve been through this year, I didn’t expect to be receiving $1,000 at the end of the year,” he said. Grant Program supports Massachusetts nonprofits that are based in and primarily serve Middlesex, Essex, and Suffolk Counties. Through this placebased initiative, Cummings Foundation aims to give back in the areas where it owns commercial property. Its buildings are all managed, at no cost to the Foundation, by its affiliate, Cummings Properties. They are all grateful for the extra help as they take the next steps towards building their future. “I am very grateful to the Mayor and everyone from the city involved with this,” said Jeremie – who is a star on the state tourney–bound MHS volleyball team – as he was preparing for practice on Thursday. “I do not come a family with a strong financial background. After losing to O’Bryant early on, Jurkowski believes that the team grew more. “We realized that maybe we weren't as good as we thought we were so we needed to get better. And then today, we came back and played O'Bryant again, we won 3-1, so it was good.” Jurkowski said. Jurkowski said that captains Kingston Chen and Yoji Yonetani hold everyone on the team accountable and make sure everyone shows up to practice on time and prepared. “They're just a group that's super motivated right now.” Chen said, “Everyone puts a part into their team and steps up as a player. I feel like I don't need to motivate my team to go to practice every day. I don't need them to like performing; I don't need them to do the basics. They do more than enough.” Chen said he had fun during his last season with this team. “I felt like everyone exceeded our expectations.” He said. Yonetani said, “I knew that this year we were going to have a really good team. So I was already excited about that.” To prepare for states, Yonetani said, “We’ll just keep playing as hard as we did today. Keep the intensity and just have fun, volleyball is all about having fun.” Senior Jason Chen said that this season was fun but also stressful. “I'll miss it for sure but I'm trying to make the most of it right now.”

B OSTON – To accommodate critical work at the Wellington Yard and Maintenance Facility as part of the MBTA’s Capital Program, shuttle buses will replace Orange Line train service between Oak Grove and Wellington Stations from approximately 8:45 p.m. on Friday, July 29, through Sunday, August 28. The Capital Transformation team will hold a virtual public meeting on June 30, 2022, at 6 p.m. to discuss this acceleration schedule and provide more details regarding work at the Wellington Yard. During this 30-day acceleration planned for the Yard, crews will replace over 7,000 feet of track, four units of special track work and over 2,000 feet of third rail. Capital Transformation is also working with other MBTA departments to identify additional improvements that can take place along the Orange Line to amplify the results during this 30-day period. June 3, 2022 program you are asking about is the COVID-19 Funeral Assistance Program administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (or FEMA). This program is part of the American Rescue Plan, a stimulus package passed in 2021 in an effort to help the country fi nancially manage amid the pandemic. This program, which has no end date, off ers up to $9,000 to cover the cost of a funeral for someone who died of COVID-19 as far back as January 2020. Unfortunately, less than half the people believed eligible for funeral assistance have actually applied for it. Here’s what you should know about the program’s requirements and how to apply. Where to Start? To apply for COVID-19 funeral assistance, you must do it over the phone by calling FEMA at 844-684-6333, anytime Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Eastern Time. The application process takes about 20 minutes. After you apply, FEMA will provide you an application number, which you may use to create an online account at DisasterAssistance.gov if you choose. You will then need to submit supporting documents, including a death certifi cate for your mother, but it must state that her death “may have been caused by” or “was likely the result of” COVID-19 or COVID-19-like symptoms. Her death must also have occurred in the U.S. on or after Jan. 20, 2020. If you don’t have this, you won’t be eligible. You’ll also need to submit proof of funeral expenses, such as itemized receipts, invoices or funeral home contracts. These supporting documents can be submitted either online (through your DisasterAssistance.gov account), by mail (P.O. Box 10001, Hyattsville, MD 20782) or via fax (855-261-3452). After the paperwork is received, it takes FEMA about 45 days to make an eligibility decision. Families who had multiple deaths due to the coronavirus can also apply. One family can receive up to $35,000 across multiple funerals. Reimbursements can be used to cover any portion of funeral expenses including burial plots, caskets, preparation of the body, cremation, urns, clergy, services and headstones as well as costs related to state or local ordinances and producing death certifi cates. But be aware that pre-paid funerals are not eligible for reimbursements. Any payment made specifi cally for a funeral prior to death is considered a duplication and is not eligible. If FEMA approves your application, the funds will either be deposited into your bank account or sent by mail via check, usually within a few days of approval. If, however, you receive a letter from FEMA saying you’re ineligible, or if the amount awarded is not enough, you have the right to appeal within 60 days of FEMA’s decision letter. THE MALDEN ADVOCATE–Friday, June 3, 2022 Page 23 Malden Flag Retirement Ceremony – June 11 D irector of Veterans’ Services Kevin Jarvis announced that there will be a Flag Retirement Ceremony on Saturday, June 11, 2022, from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. at Forest Dale Cemetery (150 Forest St., Malden). Legion members, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, veterans, students and volunteers are asked to arrive at 10 a.m. to prepare the flags for the retirement ceremony. Many volunteers placed flags on veterans’ graves in the city cemeteries in preparation for Memorial Day. During this time they also collected thousands of old and unserviceable flags. The flags are retired in a ceremony held by the American Legion along with the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts every year which promotes the proper respect for our United States flags by honorably disposing of old, worn and unserviceable flags. Notice of Comment Period and Public Hearing for CDBG and HOME Program Year 2022 (City Fiscal Year 2023) Annual Action Plan The City of Malden will hold a 30-Day comment period and conduct a public hearing regarding the City’s Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program and the North Suburban Consortium (NSC)’s Home Investment Partnerships (HOME) Program Year 2022 (City Fiscal Year 2023) funding and second draft of the Annual Action Plan. The City’s Office of Strategic Planning and Community Development (OSPCD) administers both programs, which are funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The NSC’s HOME program covers the communities of Arlington, Chelsea, Everett, Malden, Medford, Melrose, Revere and Winthrop. The second draft of the Annual Action Plan incorporates changes to the initial draft, which was based on projected federal funding levels. The City and NSC have since received actual funding levels for CDBG and HOME, and have made changes accordingly. The NSC also increased the NSC down payment assistance program from $85,000 to $185,000, and decreased the NSC housing rehabilitation program from $200,000 to $100,000.
