Page 2 THE MALDEN ADVOCATE–Friday, June 3, 2022 Keith Knight Mural installed along the Northern Strand Community Trail Special to The Advocate M ayor Gary Christenson recently joined members of Malden Arts, artist Keith Knight, Jr., his family and residents for an unveiling of the Keith Knight Mural along the Northern Strand Community Trail behind The Breakfast Club (formerly Doo Wop Diner). Mayor Christenson proclaimed May 22, 2022, as “Keith Knight, Jr. Day” in Malden, Mass. All are encouraged to come and view the artwork and enjoy the trail. Keith Knight, Jr. – a nationally syndicated, award-winning cartoonist born and raised in Malden – is a 1984 Malden High School graduate. In his early years he was known as a Michael Jackson impersonator; he later became a popular rapper and musician. His autobio comic, “The K Chronicles,” was the inspiration for the Hulu show “Woke,” which he cocreated and wrote. Keith is well-known for using his unique style and talent to address political, social and racial issues through his art. He has also led panels at college campuses, comedy clubs, libraries and churches to help educate on various community topics and create environments of inclusion and acceptance. The idea of the Malden Arts ARTLine came after a visit to the Ed Emberley retrospective at the Worcester Art Museum in 2017. Members identified four living Malden-born artists, writers and musicians whom they invited back to Malden to celebrate their contributions to the arts with public murals in Malden. The members started with the oldest, and the Ed Emberley mural, which was designed by Naomi Kahn and painted by high school art students using Ed Emberley drawing books for inspiration, was unveiled with Ed and family in attendance on Exchange Street on May 23, 2018. This was followed by two more celebrity visits: from musician Norman Greenbaum in October 2019 for the “Spirit in the Sky” mural unveiling – art by Jesse Melanson, location also on Exchange Street – and, in December 2019, Frank Stella, who unveiled the “Frank Stella Mural” on Malden High School. The youngest of the four artists, Keith Knight, during the pandemic years came up with a Malden-centric take on his comic strip “Life’s Little Victories.” The unveiling of the Keith Knight Mural was almost four years to the day, May 22, 2022, from the first mural, the Emberley, on May 23, 2018. (Courtesy/ Maldonian/ MHS Yearbook) By Steve Freker A s the Malden High School Senior Class of 2022 gets closer to Graduation Day, they are often referred to as the class that has faced more challenges than any high school class in recent history, The COVID-19 pandemic — which remains still — changed many of the rules in both education and life itself for the Class of 2022. On Sunday, Malden High School will recognize the 444 members of the Class of 2022 with its annual Commencement Exercises. Graduates, family and friends will gather at Macdonald Stadium on Pearl Street for the 2:00 p.m. ceremony with much "pomp" and lots of "circumstance" as Malden High's newest alumni-to-be are welcomed into the ranks of graduates. Of all of the traditions that were altered, reduced or cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, great efforts were to retain and maintain the MHS graduation ceremony, In 2020, a traditional ceremony with a dramatically reduced attendance policy for guests was held at the stadium, at the height of the pandemic. For the first time in school history, Graduation Day was held in August, not June. Last year, in June 2021, a much more "normal" commencement was held at Macdonald Stadium, with a full audience in attendance. This year will be the same, with no restrictions on attendance, with advisories for the protocols now in effect at the loOlivia Chan is the #2-ranked student in the Malden High School Class of 2022 and will speak as the Class Salutatorian. This year's MHS Class of 2022 has a vibrant collection of success and talented students with success in many area, including academics, social activism, athletics, and the arts. "This Class of 2022 has truly been successful despite the many challenges and obstacles it has faced," said fifth-year Malden High School Principal Chris Mastrangelo. Mastrangelo pointed out another key point regarding this senior class. "They (Class of 2022) are the only class of the four at the high school right now which has had a full year of in-class learning, due to the COVID-19 pandemic." Page 6 THE MALDEN ADVOCATE–Friday, June 3, 2022 Malden Today, Tomorrow & Yesterday: Arthur Kahn sighting P icked up pieces while waiting for 15 Ferry St. aka The Fallon Building to fi nd its new home and be brought back to life... • On Saturday, May 7, I chatted up local legend Arthur Kahn at the “Eddie Trabucco Bench Rededication” in front of the YMCA. Arthur’s fastball may not be hitting the high 90’s any longer, but he is still sharp as a tack and a delight to speak with. Always a pleasure to see Arthur, he and is family go way back; Arthur’s dad, Barney, started a jewelry business in the Square back 85 or so years ago. Called by many Law Offices of Terrence W. It was located right next door to where the old Granada Theatre once stood or where Ming’s is today. • Speaking of Arthur, his heart, as big as the whole outdoors; besides Veteran’s Services Director Kevin Jarvis there are scant few who do more for our veterans in Malden. On a side note, no matter how many times I hear Arthur tell the story about how his suit was stolen out of his locker years ago at the new YMCA, I still get a kick out of it! • I also spoke with Frankie Molis at the rededication. Frankie is Robin to little brother Kevin’s (Chief of Police) Batman. Together they have many years of making Malden a better place for all of us. Frankie may fl y under the radar, but nobody in this city for the past 50 years has worked harder at making a diff erence. • Tommy Coleman passed away recently. He’s the Coleman Arthur “The Old Ranger” Kahn brother that you didn’t know existed – unless you grew up on Clinton Street or were one of his many cousins, of course. Everybody knows Jimmy, Billy, Paul, Chris and Terry, but it seems that Tommy was the quiet one of the family. While his siblings were at Amerige or Coytemore Lea Park running wild, Tommy was studying, a bookworm to the very end, having a collection of books well over 10,000 from what I have heard. Here’s to the Coleman brother that we didn’t know. • Good evening, Mr. and Mrs. ~ Home of the Week ~ SAUGUS...Perfectly located 7 room Colonial boasting spacious kitchen with NEW appliances, living room open to dining room, desirable 1st floor family room with fireplace and skylite leading to level yard with patio, 3 bedrooms, front farmers porch with new railings, conveniently located in great neighborhood! Yes, that was a sigh of relief you heard throughout Malden on Friday night, April 29, as Mayor Christenson announced he will seek reelection in 2023. Maldonians were dancing in the street from Jimmy Murphy’s Trueman Drive in Ward 8 to the forgotten Malden, The Fellsway, across from Devir Park in Ward 2. Spontaneous keg parties, pop-up porch celebrations, and block dance parties were also reported throughout the city that night, but at the time of this writing, cannot be completely confi rmed. • I like this. Butch Gennetti has worn many hats over the years: Malden Police Commissioner, Malden Police Offi - cer, Vice President at the Italian American Citizens Club, Unoffi cial Mayor of Edgeworth and occasional drummer when the mood hit him or whoever would have him. Last week Butchie was awarded a sort of lifetime achievement award/citation from the Saint Rocco Society for his decade’s worth of contributions to the good and welfare of the annual Saint Rocco Feast. I was told he was caught off guard by the announcement. He recovered quickly, though; as his family stood and cheered, you could see he was proud as a peacock and that Butch Gennetti strut was back. Speaking of his family, Butchie’s wonderful children were on hand for the event. Butch, the patriarch of the family, has often been described by his children as a cross between Lucas McCain from “The Rifl eman,” Ward Cleaver from “Leave it To Beaver” and Mike Brady from “The Brady Bunch.” True facts. Congratulations, Butchie, well deserved! • “An Empty Bottle, A Broken Heart, & You’re Still on My Mind.” No words can express how the Malden community feels about the loss of Virginia Ruane. Dignifi ed. Brilliant. Principled. Beautiful. She will be missed for a very long time. • Charlie MacKay was also at the “Eddie Trabucco Bench Rededication.” Fascinating cat to talk to. A fi ne athlete growing up, Charlie excelled at long distance running at Malden High School before going off to serve in Nam. Later he became Malden Police chasing me and my friends out of Devir Park and off the Bandstand on an occasion or two. • You are a very longtime Maldonian if you recognize these names of candidates running for offi ce in 1973: Ken Meader (Mayor), Bill Doucette (Council), Marty Durant (Council), Charlie Devlin (School Committee), Mike Morrill (Council), Joe Irvin (Council), Bill Mingo (Council, Ward 6), Norm Lang (Council), David Rosen (School Committee)) John Sullivan (Council), Jimmy DiGiovanni (Council), Robert Buckley (Councilor-at-Large) and Chris Chopelas (Council, Ward 5). • The fl owering trees that line the Pleasant Street Parking Lot are a wonder to behold! THE MALDEN ADVOCATE–Friday, June 3, 2022 Page 7 Chelsea resident Gaye Bennes reminiscences on playing with the Boston Symphony Orchestra C HELSEA – Gaye Bennes comes from a family of gifted musicians and actors. Her mom was a musician and her father and brother were both actors. Born in 1936 in NYC, Gaye moved to LA when she was two years old. “That’s Hollywood,” she quipped. Growing up, Gaye was often on the set at MGM Studios – singing and playing the piano while attending school with other child actors. Gaye maintains her parents were enthralled with the entertainment industry, but that didn’t necessarily translate into economic security. Still, the family persevered and Gaye thrived as a child prodigy. From an early age, music played a pivotal role in her life. Gaye began playing the piano at the age of three, exhibiting a rare talent. After graduating from the prestigious Julliard School, Gaye decided to experience living in diff erent parts of the country. She taught music in Minnesota, Kentucky and Mississippi. As a Pianist in Residence, Gaye relished the small town atmosphere. But she liked to mix things up and moved to Cambridge, Mass., in 1960. Playing with the prestigious Boston Symphony Orchestra, Gaye reveled in classical medleys and chamber music. Over the years, she taught music as well as performed with the symphony. Gaye fi rmly believes this ly treasure my independence. She is the fi rst to admit she has “a captive audience” at the assisted living. “They have to listen to me!” she admitted. “I have talent and there’s nobody here who can compete on the piano,” she said with a laugh. When asked the secret to her longevity, Gaye, who looks much younger than her 85 years, attributed her good health to a bit of luck and a zest for living. She’s adamant that she doesn’t diet. She even admitted that “I eat lots of candy!” For Gaye, aging gives her a unique perspective. “In a sense, getting older is like a puzzle,” Gaye explains. “When you reach a certain age, the pieces suddenly all fi t together.” A natural born shopper, Gaye confesses she loves to shop, especially for colorful clothing and bold jewelry. With her vibrant personality and sharp wit, Gaye’s wardrobe compliments her well. Page 8 THE MALDEN ADVOCATE–Friday, June 3, 2022 The Living Art of Bonsai: A Talk with Michael Levin of Bonsai West O n Tuesday, June 7 at 6:30 p.m., the Malden Public Library is proud to present Michael Levin, the founder and proprietor of Bonsai West of Littleton. Michael will present beautiful bonsai works from his collection and demonstrate the amazing “art of bonsai.” The program will be held in the lovely 1885 Converse Memorial Building (36 Salem St., Malden, Mass.). Michael Levin founded Bonsai West (https://bonsaiwest.com/), one of the country’s largest bonsai nurseries. Since 1982 he has worked to build a place that attracts bonsai lovers and plant people from around the world. Bonsai West is a magical place and everyone who visits feels the power of the trees and that certain beauty that is unique and hard to find in our commercial world. The Bonsai West collection consists of many original works from the first generation of Japanese American bonsai artists. Michael was lucky enough to meet this small group of artists; many of them went into gardening as the only work they could find after being released from the Japanese internment camps in the late 1940’s. Michael has an interesting way of weaving their stories with his own experiences in the growth of American bonsai. Light refreshments will be served following the program. THE MALDEN ADVOCATE–Friday, June 3, 2022 Page 11 SENIOR CLASS $URPRI$E: City will provide a $1,000 Scholarship to every college-bound high school senior in Malden Mayor Christenson announces first-in-Mass. financial boost at MHS Senior Scholarship Night By Steve Freker M alden Mayor Gary Christenson brought more than just the traditional “Greetings from the City” to the annual Malden High School Senior Scholarship Night Tuesday evening. He also brought down the house. With a stunning, unprecedented announcement, Mayor Christenson drove the entire audience of students and their families to its feet in a crescendo of applause. Mayor Christenson told the members of the MHS Class of 2022 that every senior planning on furthering their education at the college level in the fall will be receiving a $1,000 scholarship from the City of Malden. In a city known to be a leader on many issues and on frequent fronts, Malden becomes the first community of the 351 cities and towns in the Commonwealth to announce such a commitment to its “young people of the moment” this high school graduation season. With over 85 percent of this year’s Malden High graduating class of 444 committed to college for the fall, the city will be making an investment of over $400,000 in the future of this year’s graduating class. The commitment approaches $500,000 when Malden residents who are college-bound seniors in other local and area high schools are included. Mayor Christenson said these students in the Class of 2022 have faced a trying challenge like no other during the COVID-19 pandemic during the past two years. Rising college costs have added to the obstacles they and their families are facing. “We want to show them that we appreciate all that they have had to deal with during their time in high school,” the Mayor said in an online report. “From being in school, to being out of school, from having to wear a mask to not having to wear a mask, from having to be tested to not having to be tested – it was stressful for them and F Scholarship boost for members for MHS Class of 2022 seniors puts ARPA funds in spotlight Federal funds of $45.7M being used for variety of community-minded projects, plans; MHS students grateful for unexpected funds for college costs By Steve Freker Any Malden resident who is a college-bound senior in the Class of 2022 will receive a $1,000 scholarship grant from the City of Malden this year, Mayor Gary Christenson announced Tuesday night. (Courtesy Photo) for their families.” The Class of 2022 students and their families have had to deal with the full force of the once-in-a-lifetime pandemic. “Our students who are graduating in 2022 have endured the brunt of the COVID-19 health crisis. From remote learning, to lost earnings opportunities (for them and their families) during the pandemic, the impact has been real,” the Mayor added in a statement released Wednesday. The City of Malden will fund the first-in-Mass. financial boost with federal funds provided to Malden through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). The federal (ARPA) funds, which provided Malden with a one-time $45.7 million grant, provide the ability for cities to address the negative impacts of COVID-19. The City of Malden has been hard at work utilizing these ARPA funds to impact the community in a myriad of positive ways. (See separate story.) The plan to give a direct infusion of assistance to Malden’s college-bound seniors came after a recent discussion between Mayor Christenson, Malden City Council President Craig Spadafora (at-large) and Ward 1 Councillor Peg Crowe, who has been long active as a founding member of the city’s municipal Scholarship Committee. The MayMalden Mayor Gary Christenson was all smiles immediately after he announced the City of Malden’s plan to issue $1,000 scholarships to every collegebound member of the city’s senior Class of 2022 at Malden High’s Senior Scholarship night on Tuesday. (Steve Freker Photo) or said Councillor Crowe noted how difficult it has been to raise funds for scholarship assistance for students since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, which is now in its third year affecting our lives. “We know that the cost of college is daunting to most families, made worse by the impacts of the pandemic,” Mayor Christenson said. “We hope that this will make it just a little easier for our families.” At one of the most important – and vulnerable – times of their lives, Mayor Christenson said, it was essential the city’s college-bound seniors got some direct assistance. “What these students have had to face the past several years is not supposed to happen when you’re in high school. Words cannot really describe what these seniors have been through,” Mayor Christenson, himself a 1986 Malden High graduate, said. “This is some assistance these students deserve to help them move forward in their lives.” or over a year now, elected officials, city leaders and members of the Malden community have been working together to determine the best ways to allocate the $45.7 million the City of Malden has received from the federal American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 (ARPA). The federal law is providing $1.9 trillion in funds nationwide to help the country recover from the public health and economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, including $130.2 billion for local governments. Over a year ago, Mayor Gary Christenson formed subcommittees, with each committee being represented by a City Councillor, a community member and a City of Malden staff member with subject matter expertise. These committees were tasked with coming up with proposals for initiatives that would be the most impactful to the community, focused with the following areas: —Public Health —Business Support —Affordable Housing —Resident/Household Support —Water & Sewer Infrastructure —Recreation —Facility Upgrades —Nonprofit Support Through the work of these teams, the city of Malden already has multiple affordable housing projects in the works and also has: —Upgraded air movement systems in public schools —Initiated programs to replace lead lines in areas with the highest concentration of children —Conducted festivals to reintroduce patrons to Malden as an offset to the lost traffic and overall business revenue from public transit, among other projects ARPA funds may not be used to create jobs that require funding of any staff or personnel salaries. According to city officials, “The list is long, and will only get longer as these committees continTony Giech MHS Class Orator Courtesy of CBSNews4 ue their work.” This is how the plan to provide a $1,000 scholarship for every college-bound member SCHOLARSHIP | SEE PAGE 12 Karen Rivera MHS Senior Courtesy of CBSNews4 Cyril Jeremie MHS Senior Courtesy of NBC10 Massimiliano Lam MHS Senior Courtesy of NBC10

The Malden-based organization was chosen from a total of 580 applicants during a competitive review process. It will receive $100,000 over two years. For 30 years The Immigrant ILC has served Malden and surrounding communities. The free English classes and related services The ILC provides enable immigrant and refugee residents to become contributing members of these communities, and the education about immigrants The ILC provides to all residents combats xenophobia and makes local communities stronger. “The support of the Cummings Foundation means so much to us,” said The ILC Founder and CEO Diane Portnoy. “It’s not just the critical fiscal support, it’s Cumming’s focus on community. As Malden Mayor Gary Christenson, who is also chairperson of the Malden School Committee, was preparing for this year’s Malden High School graduation ceremony, which is set for this Sunday, June 5, it struck him just how hard this graduating class had been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. After consulting with Malden City Council President Craig Spadafora, who has been instrumental in the work delegated to the allocation of the $45.7M ARPA funds, and Ward 1 Councillor Peg Crowe, who has been an active member of the city’s Scholarship Committee, the Mayor had an idea: “Let’s address this is a BIG way.” According to City Hall staff, the Mayor reasoned, “ARPA funds are intended to help address the negative impacts of COVID-19 and also, a graduating class entering college at a time of unprecedented cost increases, still reeling from two years of COVID impacts, was worthy of our support.” After further discussions with City Council President Spadafora, Mayor Christenson decided to put some of the funds tate firm leases and manages 11 million square feet of debt-free space, the majority of which exclusively benefits the Foundation. “We are so fortunate in greatPictured from left to right: Cummings Properties Account Manager David Harvey, The Immigrant Learning Center Executive Director Vincent Rivers and The Immigrant Learning Center Director of Development Mark Correia. nities stronger.” Grant funding from the Cummings Foundation will result in enrollment of new students from The ILC waiting list and enable continued service for current students who will continue to advance to the next class level, secure employment, advance in their current job situation or enroll in further education/training and become U.S. citizens. The Cummings $25 Million that had not been allocated to a particular subcommittee to good work. Every Malden resident graduating this year and going onto college would receive a $1,000 scholarship. The City expects to allocate about $500,000 to fund this initiative, and the response has been overwhelming. The unexpected announcement of the plan at Tuesday night’s Malden High scholarship event at the Jenkins Auditorium at Malden High was met with an instant standing ovation and raucous cheers. As word spread throughout the city and region of this first-in-Massachusetts plan on Wednesday, television news stations flooded the city and interviews were held with Mayor Christenson and Malden High students, some of whom were participating in another senior class-related event at the high school, the National Honor Society induction ceremony. Malden High School seniors like Cyril Jeremie said they couldn’t believe it when they heard the news. “When I heard it, I was really shocked – considering all we’ve been through this year, I didn’t expect to be receiving $1,000 at the end of the year,” he said. Grant Program supports Massachusetts nonprofits that are based in and primarily serve Middlesex, Essex, and Suffolk Counties. Through this placebased initiative, Cummings Foundation aims to give back in the areas where it owns commercial property. Its buildings are all managed, at no cost to the Foundation, by its affiliate, Cummings Properties. This Woburn-based commercial real esMalden senior Tony Giech, the MHS Class of 2022 Orator (as the #3-ranked student), echoed Jeremie’s response. “I just short-circuited. I was like, ‘No way this is happening. It has to be a prank. Where are the cameras?’” Giech said. As for what they plan to do with the money, MHS senior Massimiliano Lam said he has a few ideas already in mind. “Well, it can help to pay for tuition fees, cost of attendance, just commuting and all that stuff,” he said. They are all grateful for the extra help as they take the next steps towards building their future. “I am very grateful to the Mayor and everyone from the city involved with this,” said Jeremie – who is a star on the state tourney–bound MHS volleyball team – as he was preparing for practice on Thursday. “I do not come a family with a strong financial background. This [$1,000 scholarship] will be a big help.” “I’m grateful I was able to spend four years here. Malden High has been great. I was able to go to a school with rich diversity. I’m able to feel confident going into the world knowing I had that here,” senior Karen Rivera said on Wednesday. er Boston to have such effective nonprofits, plus a wealth of talented, dedicated professionals and volunteers to run them,” said Cummings Foundation Executive Director Joyce Vyriotes. “We are indebted to them for the work they do each day to provide for basic needs, break down barriers to education and health resources, and work toward a more equitable society.” With the help of about 90 volunteers, the Foundation first identified 140 organizations to receive grants of at least $100,000 each. Among the winners were first-time recipients as well as not-for-profits, such as The ILC, that had previously received Cummings Foundation grants. This year’s grant recipients represent a wide variety of causes, including food insecurity, immigrant and refugee services, social justice, education and mental health services. The not-for-profits are spread across 45 different cities and towns. The complete list of 140 grant winners, plus more than 900 previous recipients, is available at www.CummingsFoundation.org. I feel like I don't need to motivate my team to go to practice every day. I don't need them to like performing; I don't need them to do the basics. They do more than enough.” Chen said he had fun during his last season with this team. “I felt like everyone exceeded our expectations.” He said. Yonetani said, “I knew that this year we were going to have a really good team. So I was already excited about that.” To prepare for states, Yonetani said, “We’ll just keep playing as hard as we did today. Keep the intensity and just have fun, volleyball is all about having fun.” Senior Jason Chen said that this season was fun but also stressful. “I'll miss it for sure but I'm trying to make the most of it right now.”

Page 20 THE MALDEN ADVOCATE–Friday, June 3, 2022 SEAL | FROM PAGE 4 teacher] Mrs. Magner I had to be mindful that if I got elected, I would be taking on a lifetime responsibility, to assure and oversee every class reunion. I gave her my word I would. Another commitment I made to my class and to MHS after our revered Mr. Benotti passed away was to add Mr. B’s name to our class gift. The restoration of the Malden City Seal is our class’ legacy and a memorial to our beloved classmates. It has taken many years and is well overdue but we are now excited to report that with multiple fundraisers through our reunions and donations from local businesses, we are now prepared to fulfi ll that promise.” The rededication will also serve as a celebration of life for the additional nineteen class members lost since graduation. Malden is proud to host a multitude of friends and family members who will be in attendance for this event, including Benotti’s sister, Joan. The ceremony will be streamed live and recorded via Zoom (see connection information below). The video will be preserved with the Class of 1988's historical records. Any comments and chat dialogs will be preserved as well as a part of this history. There is no scheduled rain date for this observance. In the event of inclement weather, this ceremony will be moved indoors to the Jenkins Auditorium located in the Brunelli Building of Malden High School. The Malden Cultural Council works to encourage and promote the artistic development of the arts in Malden through state grant program funding. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts through the Massachusetts Cultural Council allocates funds to Malden each year in support of the fi ne arts, performing art programs, exhibits, festivals, and like programs throughout the community. The main responsibility of the Malden Cultural Council is to review local grant applications and award funding to select proposals, as funding permits. In continuing the great strides the Cultural Council has made in bringing such a wide variety of talented artists to our City, we are eager to recruit members from our diverse community to further the goal of making art accessible to all residents. The majority of meetings are held during grant season (September through December) either on Saturdays or weeknights at a time mutually agreeable to all members. There may be an additional few meetings during the year on a weeknight, scheduled as necessary. Appointees serve a three-year term. The City of Malden is driven by the value of excellence and believes that everyone deserves the best service and access to resources, regardless of their race, gender identity, religion, ethnicity, age, physical abilities, sexual orientation, veteran status, or personal experience. We embrace diverse perspectives and welcome candidates from these underrepresented groups to help make our vision a reality. OBITUARIES Bill Asaro On May 19, 2022, he was 90 years old. B OSTON – To accommodate critical work at the Wellington Yard and Maintenance Facility as part of the MBTA’s Capital Program, shuttle buses will replace Orange Line train service between Oak Grove and Wellington Stations from approximately 8:45 p.m. on Friday, July 29, through Sunday, August 28. The Capital Transformation team will hold a virtual public meeting on June 30, 2022, at 6 p.m. to discuss this acceleration schedule and provide more details regarding work at the Wellington Yard. During this 30-day acceleration planned for the Yard, crews will replace over 7,000 feet of track, four units of special track work and over 2,000 feet of third rail. Capital Transformation is also working with other MBTA departments to identify additional improvements that can take place along the Orange Line to amplify the results during this 30-day period. A progress video of the ongoing work at Wellington Yard is available on YouTube. “Improvements made during the acceleration at Wellington Yard will drive this project closer to completion. Once complete, riders will experience more reliable service and less disruptions on the Orange Line. The completion of the yard and maintenance facility will also further support the delivery of our new Orange Line vehicles,” said MBTA General Manager Steve Poftak. “We know these kinds of diversions can be frustrating, and I want to thank our Orange Line riders for their patience as we accomplish this important work on a much faster timeline.” Upgrades made to the Yard during the 30-day acceleration will improve service reliability and provide a safer, more accessible environment for workers. June 3, 2022 program you are asking about is the COVID-19 Funeral Assistance Program administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (or FEMA). This program is part of the American Rescue Plan, a stimulus package passed in 2021 in an effort to help the country fi nancially manage amid the pandemic. This program, which has no end date, off ers up to $9,000 to cover the cost of a funeral for someone who died of COVID-19 as far back as January 2020. Unfortunately, less than half the people believed eligible for funeral assistance have actually applied for it. Here’s what you should know about the program’s requirements and how to apply. Where to Start? To apply for COVID-19 funeral assistance, you must do it over the phone by calling FEMA at 844-684-6333, anytime Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Eastern Time. The application process takes about 20 minutes. After you apply, FEMA will provide you an application number, which you may use to create an online account at DisasterAssistance.gov if you choose. You will then need to submit supporting documents, including a death certifi cate for your mother, but it must state that her death “may have been caused by” or “was likely the result of” COVID-19 or COVID-19-like symptoms. Her death must also have occurred in the U.S. on or after Jan. 20, 2020. If you don’t have this, you won’t be eligible. You’ll also need to submit proof of funeral expenses, such as itemized receipts, invoices or funeral home contracts. These supporting documents can be submitted either online (through your DisasterAssistance.gov account), by mail (P.O. Box 10001, Hyattsville, MD 20782) or via fax (855-261-3452). After the paperwork is received, it takes FEMA about 45 days to make an eligibility decision. Families who had multiple deaths due to the coronavirus can also apply. One family can receive up to $35,000 across multiple funerals. Reimbursements can be used to cover any portion of funeral expenses including burial plots, caskets, preparation of the body, cremation, urns, clergy, services and headstones as well as costs related to state or local ordinances and producing death certifi cates. But be aware that pre-paid funerals are not eligible for reimbursements. Any payment made specifi cally for a funeral prior to death is considered a duplication and is not eligible. If FEMA approves your application, the funds will either be deposited into your bank account or sent by mail via check, usually within a few days of approval. If, however, you receive a letter from FEMA saying you’re ineligible, or if the amount awarded is not enough, you have the right to appeal within 60 days of FEMA’s decision letter. For more information on the COVID Funeral Assistance program, visit FEMA.gov/disaster/coronavirus/economic/funeral-assistance. Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior.org. Jim Miller is a contributor to the NBC Today show and author of “The Savvy Senior” book.
