We believe that all community members have a place at Sandusky Library. We encourage you to participate in a brief survey to help us better understand how we are engaging with the community we serve and what we can do to connect with you in a way that is meaningful. Please use the QR code or visit our website at sanduskylib.org/survey to tell us what you think. Sandusky Library is excited to launch our new Decodable Book Collection. Decodable books allow young children to sound out and decode words and are a great first step to building a confident reader. Phonics based, these books guide the reader to use phonemic awareness to build their reading abilities as they advance from level to level. Children are encouraged to sound out the words included in the simple text of each book. Decodable books coordinate with the Science of Reading, a science-based approach on how individuals learn and develop the ability to read. The 20242025 academic school year is the first year that the Science of Reading has been required in all Ohio schools. Our new Decodable Book collection allows students to use decodable books that align with what they are using in school and practice skills with parents and caregivers at home. You are your child's best teacher. Starting at birth, do these 5 simple things every day with your child. Talk Sandusky Library is happy to be celebrating our 10th Anniversary in 2025 of being a certified Family Place Library. We are one of only 4 library systems in the State of Ohio with this certification. Family Place Libraries offer programming and support for families with young children. We strive to connect families in our community with the tools and resources that they need to promote early literacy and early childhood development. To become certified, Sandusky Library had to meet each of the core components that Family Place promotes and we have recertified each year after our initial induction. These core components include: • A specially designed welcoming space for families with young children that is open and available whenever the library is open. Our Dive into Reading Early Literacy Center is open and ready for Children to play in throughout the year and features an ever changing dramatic play area and interactives. • Our Play. Learn. Grow. program features developmentally/ageappropriate toys for children ages 0-3 to play with along with their parents and caregivers. Information is available from our community partners at each session and there are opportunities to ask questions and interact with staff members from their organizations. • We offer a wide variety of materials including a collection of Toys (our Toybrary) for our patrons to check out and take home. We also have a Family Place Collection of Books and Videos available for check out in the Youth Services Department that features books on childcare and development and also picture books that help to explain tough topics, such as divorce, illness, death, etc… to children. • Our staff goes on many outreach visits each month to bring early literacy activities to children who may not be able to come in person. • We host additional programs for families all year long! • We have two members of our Staff who have attended the Family Place Training Institute and are Family Place Certified Librarians.
