from the directors Dear Friends, With your support, the Regional Food Bank was able to provide more than 38 million pounds of food to our member agencies last year, enough for nearly 32 million meals. It is always rewarding to see the generosity from all different segments of the community. Equally rewarding is the knowledge that the quality of the food we distribute continues to improve, with more meat, fresh fruits and vegetables, and dairy products than ever. I constantly hear from agencies that the fresh produce we provide is highly desired and greatly appreciated by the people they serve, and that they could never serve so many people in need if not for the Food Bank. We are committed to expand and improve everything we do in 2019. I thank our dedicated staff, Board of Directors, volunteers, food and financial donors, and member agencies for caring so deeply and making an important difference in the lives of thousands of our neighbors in need. Washington - 1,091,239 product deliveries Food orders are delivered to many agencies located at a distance from the Food Bank, helping them get more food and reduce transportation costs In 2018, we made 897 deliveries totaling food bank of the hudson valley 17,606,414 pounds. • 270 agencies served • 1,810 volunteers provided 8,224 hours of service in 2018 food sourcing • In 2018, a total of 27,362,490 pounds of food and grocery products were donated by 402 industry donors. • 1,709,903 pounds of fresh produce, dairy, and eggs were donated by 76 farmer/producer New York Farm Bureau members. • 18 new stores joined our Retail Store Donation Program, bringing the total to 224 stores from 17 retailers. • Nearly 14 million pounds of food - an increase of over 1.9 million pounds - was collected from retail stores by eight Food Bank drivers and 130 Retail Partner Agencies. Our program continues to be recognized as one of the top performing in the Feeding America network. • Food Drive donations totaled 172,164 pounds and $26,386.73. agency relations & education • 986 active programs, including food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters; 28 new in 2018 • In any month, over 355,000 individuals were served by our member food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters • In-person visits conducted with 644 member agencies to ensure compliance with Food Bank policies and help build capacity to address clients’ needs • 60 workshops offered on topics such as nutrition, food safety, customer service, conflict resolution, and succession planning mass distributions Provide large quantities of nutritious food including produce, dairy products, and beverages to low-income people above and beyond what they receive from food pantries • 30 Mass Distribution sites • 350 distributions totaling 3,896,498 pounds
product distribution by category Fruits and Vegetables 13,389,337 pounds Pasta, Grains, Bread, and Cereal 4,916,586 pounds Dairy 3,417,293 pounds Condiments 2,409,328 pounds Prepared Meals 2,192,968 pounds Protein 6,271,024 pounds Other 2,369,673 pounds Desserts & Snacks 893,281 pounds financial donors • 14,032 individuals, corporations, foundations, and organizations made cash gifts to the Regional Food Bank • 9,742 cash gifts made to the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley just say yes to fruits and vegetables •children’s programs Beverages 1,721,837 pounds Household and Personal Hygiene 775,230 pounds Pet 16,250 pounds • 231 nutrition workshops and recipe demonstrations offered to 2,200 clients at member agencies • 32,000 pounds of produce distributed to JSY participants and member agencies • JSY nutritionists worked with member pantries to increase their healthy food offerings and help encourage healthy choices through our Healthy Pantry Initiative BackPack Program served 6,650 students each week, for a total of 150,000 backpacks and 900,000 meals • Summer BackPack Program partnered with seven communities to provide over 500 children with food throughout the summer. • Summer Food Service Program served 21,000 total breakfasts and lunches at parks and community centers in nine counties (This institution is an equal opportunity provider.) • School Pantry Program, which allows middle and high school to students to select the food they take home each weekend based on their preferences and cooking abilities, expanded to 14 schools patroon land farm • 117,904 pounds of produce harvested • 458 members joined the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Program • 26 acres in production • 2,676 different volunteers gave 13,940 hours of time volunteers 17,249 different people donated 68,865 hours of service, the equivalent of 33 full-time employees! 4

Early on in this adventure someone asked me why I did it. That answer was easy. Whether in Eastern Europe before, during, and/or after the Holocaust or in the tenements in Brooklyn there were times when members of my family knew firsthand what it was like to live with hunger. If I go to sleep hungry it is because I was too tired or too busy to bother with a meal. The staff of the Regional Food Bank and Food Bank of the Hudson Valley extend a special thank you to all who helped us in 2018 with food or fund donations, fundraising, volunteer efforts, and in a multitude of other ways. We are grateful for the time, energy, and resources our generous community provided to ensure we were able to help as many people as possible in their times of greatest need. thank you how you can help donate time and talent Volunteers are vital to the Food Bank’s operation and contribute in countless ways. Sorting food, picking produce at our Farm, or raising money at a fundraising event—there are endless varieties of enjoyable, rewarding tasks that volunteers perform every day. make a monetary or in-kind donation Financial donations sustain the Food Bank and enrich the larger community by providing nourishment, dignity, and a sense of sharing to all involved. Funds come from grants, special events, and contributions, and each donation makes a meaningful difference. In-kind donations come in many forms, from printing to paving and more. These donations allow the Food Bank to provide more food to hungry people. Food donations are at the core of the Food Bank’s work. Food companies donate their edible but unsaleable food, and individuals and organizations conduct food drives at all times of the year. Non-food items like paper goods and cleaning supplies are also donated.
