When purchased for noncommercial, home or personal use, the exemption applies to bed transfer handles selling for $60 or less, bed rails selling for $110 or less, grab bars selling for $100 or less, and shower seats selling for $100 or less. In this edition of the newsletter residents will find a plethora of things to do throughout the summer. Hurricane season officially begins on June 1, but never fear … Supervisors, staff and the Lake Ashton Public Safety organizations are here to ensure residents are as safe as possible during this time of year. Residents should rest assured that the CDD Public Safety team, Neighborhood Watch, C.E.R.T, CAP and onsite security staff all work together to ensure resident's safety at all times, including times of weather emergencies. Now is a great time to ensure you are signed up to receive electronic mail from the Clubhouse and HFC. Public safety announcements, scheduled events and important meetings to attend are announced via email. Sign up on lakeashtoncdd.com or lakeashton2cdd.com, or stop by either Activities Desk for a form. LA(LW)CDD Supervisors met May 16. A wrap-up report of actions taken was sent out on May 23. Please send an email to cwells@lakeashtoncdd.com if you would like a copy. A Joint CDD Meeting was held on the same day and both boards discussed the Joint Amenity Policy. Supervisors and residents gave great feedback and a revised version of the policy will be presented at the next Joint CDD meeting on July 15 at 11 am at the Health and Fitness Center (HFC). Discussions regarding the LA(LW)CDD Fiscal Year 2023 budget (October 1, 2022 - September 30, 2023) are ongoing. The hearing to adopt the budget is set to occur on August 15, 2022 during the regularly scheduled monthly Board of Supervisors (BOS) Meeting. Every BOS meeting between now and then is important and residents are encouraged to attend in person or via Zoom. Please visit lakeashtoncdd.com for agenda packets, the proposed FY 2023 budget, approved meeting minutes, and other district documents including the current Joint Amenity Facilities Policy, and seasonal checklists. June 21 is the first day of Summer and the longest day of the year; take advantage of it! Don't let the sun and rain intimidate you — there are plenty of fun things to do inside, and outdoor activities can also be enjoyed safely. There are multiple umbrellas at the Outdoor Pool, Pet Play Park, and Bocce Ball Courts, and the Shuffleboard Courts have benches covered by a roof for shelter from the heat and rain. Remember to wear sunscreen and stay hydrated when enjoying outdoor activities. While enjoying the wonderful outdoors be sure to stop by the Clubhouse Pavilion and take a look at the beautiful Florida friendly plants that were recently installed by the Lake Ashton Garden Club. This area is more beautiful because of their hard work and dedication. In June, the Garden Club will be planting trees in the Pet Play Park. LAIICDD NEWS By Mary Bosman, LAIICDD Community Director Some of our Lake Ashton residents have already left on holiday or to go up to their second homes. Our activities will continue…dances, seminars, fitness classes, etc. the same as always even though fewer residents are here. This summer we will be continuing with Zoom Yoga classes as that is another of our valued fitness classes. A listing of events on hiatus for the summer will be published at the HFC Activities Desk, so if you are a chairperson with your event on hiatus for the summer, please call 863-595-1562 to let staff know. With temperatures rising and the humidity as well, please take time to review the symptoms of both heat stroke and heat exhaustion. They are different and can be life threatening. When outside, always have water available close at hand. Any kind of alcohol dehydrates and makes any health problems relating to the heat and humidity manifest sooner and more severely…so water, or a drink with electrolytes in it PLEASE… for your continued good health. I’ve been requesting this every summer since 2006, but it deserves repeating. Many maintenance projects have been completed. The Pickleball and Tennis Court windscreens have needed additional maintenance due to the strong winds we’ve been experiencing in Central Florida. The resurfacing of the Pickleball Courts will be done soon. We got word that we are “in the queue” to be scheduled. The new windscreens have arrived, but we will wait until this project is completed to install them. By then our service delayed new Pickleball net will hopefully be here as well. The Winged Foot Pet Park has had its gate fixed at a cost of $60 for parts in lieu of a new gate purchase of $540. This is just one example of the cost savings our Maintenance team provides to you. Recent kitchen appliance repairs also have been made. These are just a few of many tasks completed. CDD SUPERVISOR QUAL I FYING PERIOD The qualifying period for candidates for the office of Supervisor of the Lake Ashton Community Development District and Lake Ashton II Community Development District will commence at noon on June 13 and close at noon on June 17, 2022. Candidates must qualify for the office of Supervisor with the Polk County Supervisor of Elections (250 S. Broadway, Bartow, Florida 33830, 863.534.5888). All candidates shall qualify for individual seats in accordance with section 99.061, Florida Statutes, and must also be qualified electors of the District (any person at least 18 years of age who is a citizen of the United States, a legal resident of the State of Florida and of the District, and who is registered to vote with the Polk County Supervisor of Elections). Campaigns shall be conducted in accordance with Chapter 106, Florida Statutes. The Lake Ashton Community Development District (Lake Wales) has three seats up for election: seats #2, #3, and #4. The Lake Ashton II Community Development District (Winter Haven) has two seats up for election: seats #1 and #3. Each seat carries a four-year term of office. Elections are nonpartisan and will be held at the same time as the general election on November 3, 2022, in the manner prescribed by law for general elections. Florida health codes do not allow for any beverages (even bottled water) to be on the wet pool deck which is the four (4) foot perimeter around the entire pool and spa. CLUBHOUSE PET PLAY PARK UPDATES At the May 16 Board of Supervisors Meeting a quote to overseed the Clubhouse Pet Play Park was approved. During overseeding, portions of the park will be closed off for use. Please stay tuned to electronic media for information on closures once a schedule is confirmed. Clubhouse Pet Play Park maintenance concerns can be emailed to Matt Fisher, the Clubhouse Operations Manager, at (mfisher@lakeashtoncdd.com). Please include a detailed description of the issue and staff will be sure to get it resolved as soon as possible. Recently staff has received complaints regarding dogs showing aggression and being unruly at the Clubhouse Pet Play Park. Please remember when using the Pet Play Parks that there are rules in place to ensure all pets (and owners) have an enjoyable time. There is a sign posted at the entrance to all parks that list the rules in place. To help avoid conflicts with neighbors, residents are encouraged to reach out to staff or security if they believe a rule is being violated by anyone utilizing the Pet Play Park. Please provide as much information as possible in order to complete an incident report and address the concern with the parties involved. Please remember the current Joint Amenity Facilities Policy states, in part, the following regarding pets that show signs of aggression when at the parks: • At the first sign of aggression or if a pet becomes unruly and plays too rough, the pet must be leashed and removed from the pet park immediately and banned for the remainder of the day. This will also cause a verbal warning to be issued to the owner by the Amenity Manager. • In the event the pet harms, bites or fights another pet or an owner, the pet will be banned from visiting the parks while other pets are present for a period of thirty days. • If a second incident of harm, biting, or fighting occurs within a six (6) month period, the pet will be banned from the pet park for one (1) year. 14 MEDICAL REFERENCE LIBRARY Do you want to learn more about general medical conditions, as well as possible treatment options and recommendations? Topics include diabetes, arthritis, IBS, Alzheimer’s, tremors, high blood pressure, Parkinson’s disease, and others. The information provided in the reference materials, while accurate, are not meant to be used for a medical diagnosis. Please consult a doctor or specialist for any medical concerns you may have. Wildlife Corner Photo & Article By Barbara Ann Comer The Great Egret is the largest white egret in Florida. These usually solitary birds can be found at any body of water hunting for fish, the mainstay of their diet. Lake Ashton residents may be surprised to have a living lawn ornament as Great Egrets also hunt in landscaped yards for lizards and other delicacies. They are dwarfed in size only by the ubiquitous Great Blue Heron. These large white members of the heron family have a heavy yellow bill and black legs and feet. Breeding adults sport long lacy plumes on the back and vivid lime-green lores (the skin between the eye and the bill). These lovely plumes nearly led to the Great Egret's demise as they were fashionable on women's hats in the late 1800s. Once the birds were protected, they made a good comeback and became the symbol of the National Audubon Society.

Pat and Don are moving to Pittsburgh to be near their beloved daughters and grandson. Pat has been BOLLA’s president for over 11 years and has led the group to continued growth and prosperity. Under Pat’s leadership, for the last few years BOLLA has consistently donated over 1,000 blankets per year to children in crisis throughout Polk County. One of Pat’s favorite activities was BOLLA’s major fundraiser, the popular Trash to Treasure sale (coming up in March 2023). Pat was tireless in her efforts so that the Treasures donated by LA residents could be available for others to enjoy. She even recruited Don and his friends to drive trucks to residents’ homes to retrieve furniture and large items for the sale! BOLLA was not Pat’s only passion at Lake Ashton. You might have seen her volunteering at the Clubhouse Activities Desk, collating the LA Times, or helping with countless other activities. Most of all, Pat fostered a spirit of camaraderie and friendship to all. How we will miss her! We wish Pat and Don years and years of happiness with their family. LA LOOKS WHAT IS AN ALGAE BLOOM? Algae blooms are dense layers of tiny green plants that form on the surface of lakes and ponds. The rapid growth of the algae is due to the higher amounts of nutrients in the water. These nutrients are introduced by run off from the roads and fertilizers put into lawns. During the spring and summer months the combination of warm and sunny days in addition to higher nutrient levels promote continued rapid growth. Lake Ashton CDD (LACDD) has a contract with an aquatic plant management vendor that maintains the ponds on a monthly basis. When an algae bloom occurs, treatments increase to every two weeks until it is under control. To be proactive in keeping ponds clear of aquatic plants and algae, LACDD has installed grass carp in problematic ponds as recommended by the aquatics vendor. These fish are a long term, low cost way of combating unwanted aquatic plants. When we bought in Lake Ashton, we all signed to adhere to these Governing Documents. Please refrain from posting signs on golf carts, and trash bins, and mail boxes, etc. Please keep in mind that a sign posted in frustration is only a temporary relief and will undoubtedly be found objectionable by some of your neighbors. Perhaps your parents taught you: “To be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and always to be gentle toward everyone.” If you would like to make a difference, there are many ways to get involved in local, county, state or federal issues. Respectfully write to the authorities, donate to causes, volunteer your time, but please, do not take out your frustrations on your neighbors. Don’t use easily identifiable information like mother’s name, birth dates, the last four digits of your social security number, or phone numbers. •Pay attention to billing cycles and account statements. •Obtain your free credit report annually and review your credit history. CITIZENS ASSISTED PATROL (CAP) By Mike Weissberg Citizens Assisted Patrol (CAP) is always looking for more volunteers to patrol the streets. Come help be the eyes, ears, and presence for the Sheriff’s department. Patrols are once a week for two hours. Applications are available in the Clubhouse and HFC. STORM SEASON BEGINS Hurricane season begins June 1 and runs until November 30. To assist residents in getting prepared for hurricane season, staff has compiled some guidelines and other important information that will be helpful as you prepare for the 2022 Hurricane Season. It can be found on lakeashtoncdd.com and will be sent out via electronic messaging. Florida legislation created a 10-day “disaster preparedness” sales tax holiday from May 28 to June 10, 2022, for disaster preparedness supplies. Some examples of tax-free items include: flashlights and lanterns costing $40 or less; radios costing $50 or less; tarps costing $100 or less, coolers costing $60 or less, batteries costing $50 or less; and, generators costing $1,000 or less. CERT and Polk County Emergency Services will give a Hurricane Preparedness presentation at Monday Coffee on June 6 … don’t miss it! DON’T FORGET: • Hurricane and storm shutters must be approved by the Lake Ashton ARC. • Visit the official site for Florida emergency preparation at floridadisaster.org. • Go to alertpolk.com to register your contact information for the Alert Polk telephone and email notification system. Polk County officials use this system to inform county residents of situations that may affect their health, safety, and welfare, including severe weather alerts. ALL IGATOR ALERT According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) alligator mating season occurs in May and June so an increase in activity, including aggressive and territorial behavior is possible throughout the month. In late June or early July, females build a mound nest of soil, vegetation, or debris and deposit an average of 32 to 46 eggs. Incubation requires approximately 63-68 days, and hatching occurs from mid-August through early September. FWC reminds residents to be cautious when having fun in and around water during the summer months. Generally, alligators less than four feet in length are not large enough to be dangerous unless handled. However, if you encounter any alligator that you believe poses a threat to people, pets or property, call the Nuisance Alligator Hotline at 866-FWCGATOR (866-392-4286). Please be aware that nuisance alligators are killed, not relocated. 21
STOP THE BLEED CERT has partnered with the Polk County Fire Rescue to bring a Stop the Bleed class to the Clubhouse Ballroom on June 23 at 11 am. This class is an initiative that teaches the public to help slow or prevent major blood loss using compression techniques. Please sign up at the Clubhouse Information Wall, limited to only 32 participants. CPR CLASS Learn how to perform CPR with Polk County Fire Rescue on June 29 at 10 am in the Clubhouse Ballroom. This class provides hands-only chest compression CPR and AED training designed to save the lives of people in sudden cardiac arrest. Meet Barbara Reid Barb, a mother of two and grandmother of three, hails from Alberta, Canada although she lived her entire life in Manitoba until 2 years ago when she and her husband moved to be closer to their family living in Banff. Barb graduated from college as a Medical Laboratory Technologist and after college married Darrell Reid, whom she knew from high school. They just celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary. After marrying, Barb and Darrell owned a Petro Canada station and later a Dairy Queen where they worked side by side. She continued to practice in the lab as well, and was an elected official on the school board for nine years. After renting in Lake Ashton several times before retiring in 2011, Barb and Darrell decided to take the plunge and buy a home in this beautiful community. In 2013 they moved onto Nicklaus Drive. Barb loves “living in a resort” and has never regretted for a moment their decision to own in LA. According to Barb, she “loves the league, the camaraderie of the golf groups, and the amenities” of Lake Ashton. She finds it very easy to meet people through the league and in the community. Besides golf, Barb enjoys working out, walking, reading and running. During the Pandemic, she learned how to knit and makes “touques” (baby caps) for the newborn babies of the local hospital. Thank you Barb for being a part of this amazing group of women!
LA NINERS By Marti Schmidt May was Veterans Month and Red White and Blue bows were on mailboxes throughout the community to show support and appreciation of Veterans near and far. The second Annual LAVA Armed Forces Day Golf Tournament was May 21 and at time of this writing there were 30 teams signed up to participate. Way to go teams! A big THANK YOU goes out to all the Niners who contributed to the collection fund for Allisha at the Eagle’s Nest. She is more than grateful to see the support as she continues with surgeries and heals from her nasty ankle break. Get well Allisha! The Lake Ashton Garden Club members updated the front of the Pavilion and planted Native Florida Plants on the side nearest the Clubhouse pool. Plant markers were 34 added to assist current and new community re s i d e n t s interested in low maintenance Florida friendly plants. Please come visit and enjoy on a walk or golf cart ride. Thanks to all community members who donated funds to make this happen. The next meeting will be held in the Clubhouse Ballroom June 8 at 10 am. There will be a guest speaker from UF/ IFAS. Join the meeting and learn about beneficial pollinators and plants that attract both bees and birds. New members are always welcomed. GENEOLOGY CLUB By Jane Imparl Come join the Genealogy Club to find your ancestors and enjoy the company of some of your LA neighbors who have this similar interest. LAVA AUXILIARY By Chris Graves THANKS to all who supported the “Red, White and Blue Tie a Bow” fundraiser. It was a tremendous success! More bows have been ordered for future Patriotic Holidays. LAVA Auxiliary was able to support the LAVA Golf tournament on May 21st by providing a “ROVING CANTEEN.”LAVA Auxiliary volunteers provided beverages and doughnuts for the golfers. This is just one of many ways LAVA and LAVA Auxiliary work together for the benefit of the military. Please note there will be no June meeting.

LA REPUBLICANS By Brenda Bush-Sayre The Lake Ashton Republican Club will meet on June 22 at the Clubhouse. Social time begins at 3:30 pm and the meeting begins at 4. This month, the County Citizens Defending Freedom (CCDF), will tell us about their local efforts as well as what they are involved in nationally. A Candidate Jamboree will be held on July 9. LA ROCKERS By Connie Strassberg The year is flying by, and in the blink of an eye the seasons have turned from winter, to spring, to summer. LA Rockers are still meeting in the HFC Community Center on alternate Wednesdays from 2 to 4 pm. Ann Lutz taught a wonderful class on using glitter to enhance the painted rocks, while Alice Mayer encouraged LA Rockers to try their hands at the Tuesday Tutorials she posts on the Facebook page weekly. Newcomers are always welcome and it does not cost anything to try — you can borrow the supplies you need for your first meeting. Don't worry if you can't draw or paint — your efforts are guaranteed to bring a smile to someone's face (just check the mirror). There will be three meetings this month: June 1, 15, and 29! Join the Facebook group "LA Rockers" or contact either MJ Richards (mjmrichards517@gmail.com) or Alice Mayer (aamayer1@gmail.com) to let them know you are coming. SINGLES CLUB By Maureen Ziegler LA Singles is a social group that plans activities for single residents. The group meets monthly on the first Sunday of the month at 2 pm in the 36 Clubhouse Ballroom. In May, the group discussed several outings and get togethers. Plans were discussed for a lunch at Lucille’s in Winter Haven and a back-stage tour of the Winter Haven Theater. A list of names for Senior Orphans’ midyear gifts will be available at the June meeting. If you would like to take part in activities with other singles, attend the meeting on June 5. LA SWIM CLUB By Sandy White Super exciting news! The two LA Swim Club members pictured above, Cathy Liska & Sharon Swanson, represented Lake Ashton in the 2022 National Senior Games in Swimming in Fort Lauderdale, May 13-16. There were over 700 competitors, a mechanical delay, and weather delays. Cathy and Sharon each swam in three events and finished in the top 20 of each. What an achievement! Congratulations! The National Senior Games was created for ages 50-100+ in 1987 and is held every two years. There are typically over 12,000 participants in 22 sports. The swimming competition is divided into 12 events, plus two gender & ten 5-year age groups. To qualify to compete at Nationals, one must first compete and place in the top 5 in a regional meet and then must compete and place in the top 4 at the Florida Senior Games. LA Swim Club invites all swimmers to swim during the three scheduled times each week (Mondays 6-7 pm, Wednesdays 1:45-2:45 pm, Saturdays 10-11 am). Workouts are tailored to your desires - whether you are competitive or not, if you wish to swim for fun and fitness, or you simply want to improve your technique and enjoy the company of others with similar interests. While everyone is proud of Cathy and Sharon, please do not be intimidated by their personal accomplishments. It is fun and welcoming! LA PICKLEBALL ASSOCIATION By Becky Wilson Pickleball players may give themselves a rating, which is appropriately called a self-rating. Selfratings are two digits (for instance, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, etc.). To determine what your pickleball self-rating is, check out below! (Source: ThePickler.com) 1.0-2.0 - Just starting to play and understand the rules of pickleball. 2.5 - You can keep a short rally on the pickleball court, and have a basic understanding of the rules (particularly, you can keep score properly). 3.0 - You can generally hit forehand drives, serves, and returns with medium pace, as well as dinks, but generally lack consistency and control (for instance, serves and returns are not consistent and lack depth); you understand the basic strategy and rules, including keeping score properly. 3.5 - You can hit drives, serves, and returns with pace (including developing backhand shots), as well as dinks and drop shots, and are developing some consistency and control ( including consistently hitting serves and returns in play); you understand the basic strategy and rules, you are starting to vary your shots between the hard and soft game, and you are moving quickly to the Non-Volley Zone line when you have the opportunity. 4.0 - You can generally hit both forehand and backhand drives, serves, and returns with pace, as well as dinks, drop shots, and volleys (including block volleys) of different speeds, and have consistency and control; you understand the strategy and rules of pickleball (including stacking), you have a moderate number of unforced errors, and you understand how to attack your opponents’ weaknesses on the pickleball court. 4.5 - You can generally hit both forehand and backhand drives, serves, returns, dinks, drop shots, and volleys with pace, spin, depth, direction, consistency and control; you understand the strategy and rules of pickleball (including 37 stacking), you have a limited number of unforced errors, and you change your game play to attack your opponents’ weaknesses on the pickleball court. 5.0 - You have mastered both forehand and backhand drives, serves, and returns with pace, as well as dinks, drop shots, and volleys of different speeds, and have consistency and control; you have mastered the strategy and rules of pickleball (including stacking), you rarely make unforced errors, and you attack your opponents’ weaknesses on the pickleball court. 5.5-6.0+ - You have mastered all shots and strategy on the pickleball court; you are consistently winning at the highest level (against the best professional pickleball players at the tournament level).
